Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What I expected and more!.......2005-10-19

This purchase also comes with an extra dvd which is creative and nice! Not to mention relaxing!
I recommend this puchase if smooth, laid back, relaxing, modern jazz is your style.

5 out of 5 stars Lush, Exotic Chill.......2004-08-01

The music on this set is perfect for relaxation or entertainment. It is creative and can be called 'Lounge' music but many somes have aspects of Dance, Jazz, Chill, and Electronica. I found the music highly accessible and digestible. To use a very overused word--it is very 'cool.'

"Agent Dream" is one example of the approach used. There's mostly music yet with some lyrics or vocals. The music and production is clean and crisp and
the effects and dubs really tight. [A] Very modern sound is often interblended with exotic tones and vocalisms as is heard on cut #6 "JaGuBa." One of my favorite cuts was "A Shade Cool." Here the music is nuanced and has a somewhat lush sense to it...all the while with edges of some exotic tones that give it an almost Far Eastern aura. "Bird Sky Blue" may be the best song on the project. It's a perfect blend of beats, tones, and effect that may recall Smooth Jazz meets island Chill. The vocals or vocalisms add depth to the fine tune. I think it is irresistible. Then "Belize Azure" continues the theme with bigger beats and is more Dance/Chillout. There's many more solid cuts on this album. One of the more dance-grooved is #13 "Prelude to a Groove." It is Electronic/ Dance/House and has the feel of a big commercial winner. The CD closes with the rich exotic feeling "Midnight Flame." Check out the 'horn' and 'guitar' here. It is another solid number.

An extra to this project is the bonus DVD. The DVD could be called 'instant' sunset because it has one hour of a digitally filmed Key West sunset.

Overall this is a fine offering. Great sound, hot grooves that take the listener to a paradise. The sunset and the music make this a must have for those in the cold northern latitudes. Bring Key West home and enjoy some great sounds. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for EVERYDAY!.......2004-04-20

I purchased this CD tonight and I absolutely love it! It is so relaxing. Perfect relief for a stressful day or anyday! The DVD which also comes with the CD is awsome. I highly recommend this CD!

4 out of 5 stars Very Nice Work.......2004-03-30

This CD comes with a 1 hour DVD of a sunset at Key West that includes the music. This is in addition to the regular Audio CD.
I found this music to be good chill. Wonderful ambience, it does remind you of setting on a dock in the ocean with a cocktail(s). It does have a good driving backbone to it. I really enjoyed it. I cant really say which is a standout groove, but theres no need for that. Like most chill music, the CD encompasses you if you let it. Good stuff, I advise getting a copy. For $9.95, you cant go wrong.

Before Sunrise and Before Sunset are director Richard Linklater's intimate romantic bookends. Separated by nine years, the latter film picks up the threads of an unfinished conversation spurred during the former's chance encounter between an American writer (Ethan Hawke) and French grad student (Julie Delpy). Commitments have long since changed their lives, but the question remains: What if? Hawke and Delpy blurred the lines between filmmaking and reality by penning their own dialog for the second installment, while the actress further underscored that sensibility by writing and performing the core songs for its soundtrack. Their warm, vulnerable charm offers character insight rare in a song-score, while the folk contributions of singers Kathy McCarty and Kath Bloom and chamber pieces by Bach and Purcell complete the ambience; several songs from the 1995 film round out the collection. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

The Before Sunset soundtrack (combining tracks from Before Sunrise, for which there was never a soundtrack album) is a romantic musical journey, featuring "Just in Time" by Nina Simone plus multiple tracks by the film's star Julie Delpy. The album also includes classical tracks by Johann Sebastian Bach and Henry Purcell plus performances by Yo-Yo Ma and Igor Kipnis.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Allright compliation that captures some essence of the movie.........2005-10-12

I'm pretty sure everyone thinking about buying this is probably a fan of these cute little movies. The movies work because they are intellgent with great characaters but also because they evoke that feeling that is pretty hard to describe but easy to recognize. This soundtrack is able to capture that "essence" to some degree and it is worth owning if you are a big fan of the movies but other wise you will probaby want to steer clear.

Julie Delphy sings three songs on the album and they are all good. Like the other reviewer said "Waltz For A Night" is OK but not as good as in the movie and after watching it again I decided the actors reactions to the song are what made it great. Living Life is really catchy and maybe the best song on the disc...I'm surprised it didn't get any radio play. The classical music is pretty good as well but sometimes feels out of place mixed in with the contemporary songs. The biggest flaw of the album is how uneven it is. Honestly the last three songs are pretty much garbage. I don't even recognize them from the movie and never listen to them.

Just for the record, I classified this CD as "coffe house" under the genre section of my ipod.

Bottom Line: If you liked the movies you might really enjoy the first half of this CD. Otherwise you can probably pass on this.

4 out of 5 stars before sunset/before sunrise.......2005-08-03

I mainly bought this cd because I loved the song that Julie Delpy sang at the end of before sunset. Later I found out that she has made many cds. I am still glad that i bought this cd, it is full of random interesting songs. I also want to support these types of films.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the Movies.......2005-01-06

If you loved the the concoction of music that made their indelible marks in "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset", the soundtrack will come as a major let-down to you. While selective tracks were memorable and brought back fond memories of the movies' moving montages, the soundtrack which lasted a mere 34 minutes and 36 seconds was way too brief to afford the listener a chance to fully appreciate and relish the music that made these superbly-directed movies truly unforgettable.

The best tracks - "Purcell's Dido & Aeneas Overture*" (Track 5), "Bach's Andante from Sonata for Viola da Gamba in G Major" (Track 4) and "Bach's Goldberg Variations in G Major*" (Track 8) - played during the beginning and finishing sequences of "Before Sunrise" simply wasn't aired long enough, leaving one insatiated and yearning for more. The next best tracks are the ones featuring silky-voiced Julie Delpy as the solo songstress - "Je t'aime tant" (Track 1); "An Ocean Apart" (Track 6) and "A Waltz For a Night" (Track 3) - while not perfectly sung, these numbers were performed with great urgency and relevance, but sadly too few and far between.

All said, these six tracks are the sole redeeming grace of the soundtrack as it showcased Linklater's and his editors' ingenious edge in handpicking magical pieces not only in their own right (especially those chosen for "Before Sunrise") but music that worked cohesively in transcending the two movies from extraordinary to sublime. But the fact of the matter is: one inevitably feels the pinch of being ripped of and remorseful that the producers had to spoil what could have been a most tantalizing experience in owning the perfect soundtrack to the much loved movies. If only they had extended the repertoire by including Nina Simone's closing number; songs from Delpy's album (2003) or her unreleased works (either those accompanied by her guitar-playing or au naturel a cappellas would be fine); not least extended versions of the classical recordings to fill this skimpily tossed up soundtrack hastily rendered to milk the success of the movies. This would have made the soundtrack truly 5-star worthy.

*If you've enjoyed Purcell's Dido & Aeneas, one of the best renditions of the opera was performed by Christopher Hogwood's Chorus and Orchestra of The Academy of Ancient Music (Decca, 1994). For Bach's Goldberg Variations, check out Pierre Hantai's spectacular performance on the Harpsichord (Mirare, 2003).

3 out of 5 stars If you want some of the tracks it's okay, but not great.......2004-07-31

This album actually is music from both "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset," both of which are incredible movies. Much of the music is very enjoyable, however the album really doesn't flow well with the baroque pieces from the first movie interspersed with the other songs. Apparently these aren't even the same versions of the baroque pieces. I enjoyed Julie Delpy's songs because of their relationship to the movie (though I liked the acoustic "A Waltz for a Night" version from the movie better than this studio version). The last two grunge angst songs I don't recognize at all from either movie, why are they here? And unfortunately the Nina Simone song, "Just In Time," that ended "Before Sunset" isn't on here. If you really want it, it can be found on her album "At the Village Gate" or "Tomato Collection." So, taken as individual tracks there are good songs on this soundtrack, but the album as a whole isn't spectacular.

4 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack!.......2004-07-26

Julie Delpy's mesmerizing lyrics dig deep into your soul, and the other musicians - Kath Bloom, for example - come together to make this a wonderful collection. The only reason I didn't give this CD 5 stars is because there are a few baroque klavier pieces which seem disruptive. However, I have a feeling that, after time, they'll also make sense. Go out and buy it! (watch the movie first!)

4 out of 5 stars Camiel, the next thing in chill jazz.......2007-04-06

Another artist I have heard on my local smooth jazz station, I am fond of Camiel's neo-Brazilian tune "El Alba". The rest of the tracks have electronic effects to liven up the tunes, but it is Camiel's guitar works that interests me.

3 out of 5 stars Solid CD that comes dangerously close to..........2006-04-06

... 'light jazz'. Camiel's an artist out of the Netherlands and this is his first album from back in 2002. It actually took a bit of time for it to come up in Amazon, but... here it is! I got into some of his music when checking out various compilations, like Cafe Samba and Jazz Lounge. Since I liked both songs, the next step was to check out the artist.

And this isn't a bad release. "Sunset" starts off rather positively. It actually reminded me a bit of Troubleman's cd, only it's far less electronically twinged. That's followed up with "I'm Ready", where you hear him on guitar, adding a little bit of funk to the sound wihtout the tune being overbearing. But... there wasn't a great deal of adventure in the track. "Follow Her" came afterwards and the music was actually pretty nice, although it was admittedly a bit of a cheesy tune with vocals. That can be a dangerous approach but then again, sometimes that's what made the old Italian bossa soundtracks fun for today (like when you hear the woman say... "You're so groovy"). Other tracks that stood out were "Sintra", "El Alba" and "Eighty Eight". The mood of the cd in general is pretty easy going and low-key. Actually... to be honest... this album reminds me of something that more... *mature*... fans would listen to when they're driving home from work/listening to the 'soft-jazz' radio stations that play a healthy dosage of David Sanborn. Nothing wrong with that at all, mind you... [yeah, I did a bad job sugarcoating it, didn't I? (edited as they sensored my review...)] :)

That's it in a nutshell. While this album didn't necessarily grab me, I would still recommend this to anyone that's a fan of light jazz. I think if you're a fan of Praful, you'll be interested in this and if you haven't heard Praful but love this, you might like Praful even more. You may also like a little known guitarist named Lars Bartkuhn. Sometimes I spin his stuff (Treasure Everything), the sound on it may get dated eventually but there's an energy to his music.

5 out of 5 stars ELLIOTT Haworth (Spokane wa).......2006-03-05

I really Really like this cd!! I am a very big fan of chill I think its very interesting. The first song on the cd makes me want to go to a place were you can lay back and relax

5 out of 5 stars FRESH and SMOOTH!!!.......2006-02-23

Got lucky and heard CAMIEL while traveling on the airplane from SanFrancisco to Japan. The song "I'm ready" is great! I couldn't find it for the longest time, because I didn't know who the artist was nor did I know the title of the song. But finally my local Jazz station interviewed him on the air and thus, I found out who it is. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this CD. It's nice and fresh. Not only Jazzy, but also kind of House, and a little Funk as well. If you have any ear for "musical" music, then you will enjoy this jammin CD.

5 out of 5 stars great album.......2005-11-29

just what i expected from camiel like always laid back jazz or down tempo whatever you wanna call it it's just great chill you up.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty !.......2003-08-14

I am not a Tommy Flanagan expert- but I have recently fallen in love with his music. This CD captures him certainly at an inspired time and also his drummer and bassist follow him very well, to say the least.

This CD will offer a variety of moods- humor, happiness, tenderness, and more...

Not much else needs to be said, but i might as well mention that the sound quality is good, the CD is over an hour long, and Tommy knows how to play the piano with both of his hands- which is rare.

Also, I absolutely love the songs Tin Tin Deo, Sunset and the Mockingbird, and Malice Towards None. The others are also great.

5 out of 5 stars happy anniversary Tommy Flanagan !.......2001-09-16

On March 16.1997,Tommy Flanagan came to Village Vanguard to celebrate his 67th birthday. The result is this splendid record. This is Flanagan at his very best, beautifully recorded and in outstanding form.Peter Washington plays bass, and Lewis Nash,a great young musician,is the drummer.Tommy Flanagan pays tributes to the great Thad Jones, member of the Jones family with his brothers Elvin and Hank,in two tunes ("birdsong" and "let's"),to Dizzy Gillespie ("tin tin deo" and "I waited for you"),Tom McIntosh ("with malice toward none" and a masterpiece,a medley "the balanced scales/the cupbearers") and of course Duke Ellington, playing one of Duke's rarest tunes, the very emotional "Sunset and the mockingbird",the first movement of Duke's "Queen's suite".What more is there to say? Tommy Flanagan is one of jazz greatest piano players of today, with Hank Jones and Kenny Barron. His playing includes many influences: Teddy Wilson,Bud of course,Hank Jones,MaryLou Williams,Duke and Earl Hines. But he is one of jazz 's most original voices,a real master of his instrument.Every one who was lucky enough to see him on stage knows what I mean.Tommy is a superlative artist, and a beautiful man, simple, sweet, always ready and disponible to talk to you. Each track of this album is a gem, but to me,the highlight of this concert is the last track,a solo effort on the beautiful Mack Gordon tune,"goodnight my love",dedicated by Tommy to his marvelous wife,Diana.Tommy's playing is very reminiscent of Thelonious Monk during this performance.A special thank to the audience who wishes him a happy birthday at the end of the record.

5 out of 5 stars Here I Am, Bird........2000-11-25

To be privileged to be a bird on a wire at a Tommy Flanagan concert is something to remember. This live recording from New York's Birdland is almost as good, recorded as it is on his 67th birthday with a most appreciative audience on hand. Tommy Flanagan is physically perched by the keyboard, gentle yet powerful, a great jazz sight. A robin is a bird and so is an eagle, gentle yet powerful - powerful yet gentle. This set opens with a tuneful melody by a fellow Motor City bird, Thad Jones, and turns and twists into a wonderful example of this Bird in flight. With Lewis Nash and Peter Washington in tuneful, telephatic tandem this becomes a complete collection of works, nodding also towards Tom MacIntosh and the Birks Bird, and the Mockingbird that is Ellington. In the great scheme of things Tommy Flanagan is occasionally overlooked his place in the pecking order of superlative jazz piano stylists, but here's the remedy - buy this album and appreciate his genius. It is a grand and challenging work, and many Happy Returns to the jazzbird that is Tommy Flanagan.

4 out of 5 stars A fine live performance.......1999-12-03

This is a wonderful CD that I seem to never grow tired of. The tracks are at times slow and tender, then shift to a life-affirming, energetic pace. Mr. Flanagan's playing is both witty and playful. It's a nice addition to any collection.

3 out of 5 stars marginal fidelity.......1999-09-19

This CD typifies Flanagan's customary fine artistry, but the fidelity is marginal. Where were the piano mikes?

4 out of 5 stars Lovely "Sunset".......2000-10-28

Teddy Edwards' "Sunset Eyes" is a lovely album by a virtually unknown west coast tenor saxman, who at the time of this CD reissue in 1998, was still playing at the age of 74. In terms of recording sessions, "Sunset Eyes" is Teddy's first effort, although "Teddy's Ready" on the Contemporary label (see my review) was his first produced album. Actually it is quite odd that the track "Tempo De Blues" was cut exactly a year and a day before the "Teddy's Ready" session, and CD tracks 2 & 4-7 were cut on August 16, 1960, literally the day before Teddy recorded "Teddy's Ready." (According to Michael Cuscuna's liner notes, Lester Koenig of Contemporary offered to record Teddy, but he was in the middle of cutting this album for Pacific. So Lester told Teddy that he'd give him a contract the day after he was done with the Pacific session, and he did!) The four other tracks, including three that are bonus tracks on this CD reissue, are from a unknown date in mid 1960. The personnel on most of "Sunset Eyes" is the same as "Teddy's Ready" -- Joe Castro on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Billy Higgins on drums -- but it also features Amos Trice and Ronnie Ball on piano, Ben Tucker on bass and Al Levitt on drums. This CD is a limited edition (and last I heard it was actually out of print with the exception of those CDs already in the marketplace), so interested parties should act fast.

5 out of 5 stars Really great music!.......2007-04-26

I bought this CD mainly for listening with my dad when I visit him as one of his favorite songs is Canadian Sunset. But I have really grown fond of it myself. They are great instrumental songs, executed in a bit of a jazzy rendition. Really great to listen to.

    5 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Heywood.......2004-10-08

If you love the best one of the best instrumentals of the 50s "Canadian Sunset" and believe that NO one else has come close to the charm and sound of Heywood doing it... not only will you find the full-length version of it here (complete with intro), but also a slightly jazzier combo version that is just terrific. Add to that these other wonderful cuts and you will play this one over and over. The only thing missing is the beautiful "LAND OF DREAMS", but you can find that on "The Best of Hugo Winterhalter", which I also bought here on Amazon. This is still an awesome collection for instrumental lovers. HIGHLY recommend!

5 out of 5 stars At Last! Heywood on CD!.......2002-05-03

A long time ago in the far away land of my youth, I received a 45 rpm copy of Canadian Sunset, I think for Christmas 1956. I had fallen in love with serious and classical music, but this pop single on RCA really got to me. I was a ripe old age of eleven. I had seen the 33 L.P. in the music stores, but alas, nothing at home but a 45 Victrola to play anything on. Sometime later, I came across a 45 Extended Play short version of the album, which squeezed 4 whole songs onto the vinyl disk. I wore it out playing it. I had searched the archives of music in my later years, to no avail. Imagine my surprise when this one turned up as a collectable. Imagine my childlike joy, when my dear wife (I love Her!) presented it to me as an early Christmas gift! Imagine the absolute bliss of once again hearing Eddie Heywood play in his wonderful and inimitable style. I have proven to my satisfaction that you may wear out a CD player but you won't wear out the CD. I still love to hear it. Eddie Heywood's talent speaks for itself. The compilation of his later works on this CD is simply wonderful. His solo version of Canadian Sunset was icing on the cake. The digital remastering of all the old analog tracks is impeccable. There was some stridency on the opening of song # 4 (Rendezvous For Two) but I observed that this same stridency of the violin section was also on the Vinyl issues of years ago. No fault of the digital process. This one definitely has the warmth of "vinyl" sound and the vacuum tube equipment of my youth. This is "the" one if you like any kind of jazz and especially if you like piano showcased by the lush instrumentals of years ago. It takes nothing away from Mr. Heywood's talent whether he is accompanied, or plays solo. I give this one five stars, for music content, for the artist, and for the near perfect transformation of the master tapes to Compact Disc. A definite Collector.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!.......2007-02-24

This is by far the best pop sax playing I've ever heard out of thousands of saxophone recordings. Nothing even compares to the pop sax playing on these tracks. Each sax solo on every track is incredible. If you're a saxophone player, this is one album you truly shouldn't miss experiencing. There is absolutely nothing else like it. Congrats to Ed.

    4 out of 5 stars I've Abused This CD.......2004-01-31

When Ed Calle's Twilight cd came out I purchased it and like it so much I went out and picked up "Sunset Harbor". I must have been in a bad mood when I first listened to it, because for the most part I just let it sit and collect dust for the past couple years always selecting some other sax cd to play. I popped it in today and WOW! What have I been missing all this time?! Some songs are soft and relaxing like "San Sebastian". Others like "Nightfall"are soft and sensual. All the songs have a great beat. I'm definately going to give this cd more playing time.

5 out of 5 stars This Baby Delivers !!!.......2001-11-05

I've always been a crazy mixed up kind of person and I discovered Ed's wonderful talent with the gift of his latest album Twilight. Appetite wetted I ordered Sunset Harbor from Amazon. I was a little nervous putting the cd into the player, there's nothing worse than discovering a piece of music that thrills you, buying some work of the artist and then discovering the original piece you heard was the exception to the rule. Not so this baby!! Ed's playing passion leaps from the player and bedazzles the senses from the work go. You really get a sense of a man at one with his instrument, so entwined they are as one, seemly to have an innate sense of what his music fans desire. This album has an entrancing balance of rhythm, romance and passion that all go to keep the cd permanently in the player. I'm totally hypnotised by his playing and indeed find myself compelled to the buy the rest of his works without a shadow of a doubt I'll experience his passionate playing in all of them. I wanted to mention a few favourite tracks off this album but its so infuriating, they are all so dam good. I thought Robbie was correct with Rum & Coke but then I play San Sebastian a lot because I love its latino feel - when he gets those high notes my toes curl! Oh and then I also wanted to mention Reasons, a track that echoes around my mind long after its gone and leaves me thinking that this guy must be awesome live!!

5 out of 5 stars An Album That Keeps Getting Better.......2000-08-06

Although I am new to jazz, I have found this albun to be one of my favorites. Each time I listen to a song, I hear something new and beautifully different. Ed Calle plays his instrument as if he is is having a wonderful love affair. This is one album that I will be getting continuous pleasure from for a long time. I just wish he would produce some more quickly.

    5 out of 5 stars Sunset Harbor-Ed Calle.......2000-04-13

I heard the piece Sunset Harbor on DMX and ordered the CD the same day. I have nearly worn out the cut of Rum & Coke. This CD has laid back and jump up, exactly how I like to listen to music. I highly recommend this CD and I intend to get more of his music.
