Album Description

The Orange Mountain Music release "Music 4 Hands" is a collection of new recordings on dual pianos performed by Dennis Russell Davies and Maki Namekawa. The compositions are "Six Scenes from Les Enfants Terribles" for two pianos based on the original opera by Philip Glass as well as a Steve Reich's "Piano Phase". "Music 4 Hands" debuts these new arrangements by Dennis Russell Davies and Maki Namekawa.

Philip and Steve Reich were leaders of a new music revolution in New York City in the 1960´s and 70´s that included Terry Riley, Lamonte Young, and Meredith Monk. In the years since then their careers and music have greatly diverged, and it is rewarding to find a new record that celebrates them both.

Maki Namekawa is one of the young musicians who is introducing new works into the mainstream of German concert activity. As a soloist and a chamber musician equally at home in classical music and contemporary repertoire, Ms. Namekawa appears regularly at major concert venues in Japan and Europe.

Dennis Russell Davies is the chief conductor of the Bruckner Orchestra Linz and the Landestheater Linz, as well as chief conductor of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. His range of activities include conductor, pianist, and chamber musician. All Davies' talents are characterized by a very broad repertoire ranging from Baroque to very modern, all with an intense commitment to the composers of our time.

5 out of 5 stars ADORE IT!.......2006-04-23

I LOVE the opera recording, so I was afraid that the 2 piano arrangement might be a little too sparse...but I ADORE this version. All the inner voices of Glass' music are brought out and in the end, just like with the opera, I am very moved. Glass is a Romatic at heart, and this version like the opera recording shows it. .

5 out of 5 stars Another Great CD.......2006-02-02

I disagree with the previous reviewers comments in that there are NO STRINGS on this CD.
It features two seminal works by two important composers of our day: Philip Glass and Steve Reich.
This recording of Reich's Piano Phase is poignant! The performances are flawless and the recording is wonderful.

The transcription of a suite of instrumental music from Glass' LES ENFANTS TERRIBLES is wonderful. Davies and Namekawa, the pianists, have made an effective transcription of the original 3 piano-part Glass opera, to 2 piano/4 hand instrumental suite.
It's really wonderful, especially the Sleepwalking music.

Just FANTASTIC!

5 out of 5 stars Glass on piano is always good.......2005-11-28

If you like Philip Glass and the sound of pure piano then this recording is worth listening to - its that simple. Davies is a well known conductor and pianist in most classical music circles, and he plays with the central pianist in his own orchestra - so they both understand each other very well.
This makes the dual piano approach work out in the end, and Reichs piano phase gets the treatment it demands and frankly deserves.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Blazing the crop.......2005-06-03

Rae and Christian suffer from some serious sophomore-slumpin' in "Sleepwalking." While their second studio release is not even close to bad -- actually it's fairly good -- it suffers from a lack of new ideas, and some Pharcyde songs that stick out like sore, bloody thumbs.

It opens with a swippy hip-hop intro, "Blazing the Crop," an entertaining little number with what sounds like panpipes. What follows is alternately satisfactory and hilarious, with everything from outrageously genteel falsettos to swooning trip-ballads featuring Kate Rogers and Tania Maria, as well as the trippy, smoldering "Trailing in the Wake."

Unfortunately, there are two songs by the Pharcyde that simply don't fit in with the smoother, mellower hip-hop. "Let It Go" and "It Ain't Nothing Like" meander aimlessly through mellow beats, sounding jagged and uncomfortable. Perhaps it would have been better back in the "Bizarre Ride II" era, but here they sound overworn. And the legendary Bobby Womack does a good job, but it feels like Rae and Christian weren't quite sure how to use his talents.

Rae and Christian broke some new ground with "Northern Sulphuric Soul," a delightful acid hip-hop album. There, they made new inroads and breathed some fresh life into the subgenre. But here, they feel like they are on autopilot... or even worse, out of inspiration.

Fortunately they do turn out some very good material, mostly the layered downtempo numbers, and the hilarious number with the Congos: "Like putting one foot right in front of the othah," in an intensely posh voice over some trippy hip-hop beats. And Rae and Christian duet well with the female singers on here, including the soaring finale with Siron.

Unfortunately, they forge no new territory with "Sleepwalking," and the album is burdened with some songs that should have been cut. Fortunately it redeems itself with some beautiful downtempo songs.

3 out of 5 stars Go Back to Sleep!.......2003-10-26

Alright, I don't really want to be mean, since I was really impressed with Rae & Christian's debut Northern Sulphuric Soul. It's *not that bad* and is a whole lot better than a lot of stuff out there, but honestly, I expected a whole lot more than this from this talented duo. While technically well-mixed and consistent with the brand identity of Rae & Christian, Sleepwalking is not an album that breaks doors into different realms of a genre. Instead, the best it does is only support an already existing genre with tunes that resonate as "this is what the genre is about... thomp thomp thomp." I looped this album twice and got bored because I wanted to hear Rae & Christian take a leap of faith and come up with fresh, new, original beats. Instead, Sleepwalking was a whiny, longwinded feat that should have been on a 2nd CD on Northern Sulphuric Soul.

4 out of 5 stars A Breath of Fresh Air........2001-04-08

While I am not famillar with "Northern Sulphuric Soul," I found Rae & Christian's sophomore effort to be a breath of fresh air in the world of tired, over-produced hip-hop.

"Sleepwalking" has Rae & Christian showcasing a truly eclectic group of vocalists: The Congos, Tania Maria, Bobby Womack, The Pharcyde, and Kate Rodgers (check out Aim's "Cold Water Music" if you like her). However, the true beauty of this album lies in the music. "Sleepwalking" is flawlessly produced, and finds the Mancunian duo relying more on their own musicality than samples (only three are used).

"Blazing The Crop" is one for the backyard barbecue, a refreshing summer instrumental. The Congos' vocals are a bit 'castrotti' for me, but I still enjoyed "Hold Us Down." Bobby Womack astounds in "Get A Life" and "Wake Up, Everybody" respectively. The blissful sax-infused trip-hop of "Not Just Anybody" caresses your ears, while Kate Rodgers soothes and seduces -- like a Singapore Sling on a hot day. "Ready To Roll" and "Trailing In The Wake" are two fine instrumentals in their own right, no less interesting than any of the vocalised songs.

So why, you may be thinking, does this get three-and-a-half stars? Both tracks that feature the Pharcyde stand out like sore thumbs. I'm sorry, but this group (after changes in lineup -- no more FatLip!) can never live up to the standard set on classics like "Bizarre Ride II" and "Lacabincalifornia." They come off sounding old and tired. Rae & Christian do their best to rectify....but the end result is not so satisfactory.

Tired of hip-hop? Pick up "Sleepwalking."

2 out of 5 stars Soporific.......2001-03-08

After their tremendous debut on Northern Sulphuric Soul and last year's absolutely slammin' Blazing the Crop dj set on Mixer, Rae & Christian's second studio release is a serious disappointment. There are some good beats and pieces, but the parts just don't add up. The hip hop tracks featuring Pharcyde just sort of meander without really going anywhere. In fact, after a few listenings they get monotonous. Which is inexcusable given the dope magic these guys have worked with the Jungle Brothers and Kriminul on their own and other Grand Central releases. The trip-hoppy downtempo tracks featuring Kate Rogers, Tania Maria and Siron also come up short. None of them are horrible, just nothing new there. The first Bobby Womack track isn't bad, and it's nice to hear him given the Rae & Christian treatment, but like so much of this album, the song just never takes off. This seems to be more and more of a problem with producers these days. They get an old-school legend like Bobby Womack or Roy Ayers (on Planet-e's new compilation The Good Good 2000 Black) into the studio and really don't know what to do with them except let them scat a few lyrics over some looped beats. But let's not be too harsh, the album isn't unlistenable, it's just not exciting and certainly not what you'd expect from the two producers who pioneered the Brit-Hop sound. Grand Central remains one of the most essential labels to emerge in the last decade and as long as they keep pumping out killer cuts like Aim's Ain't Got Time to Waste and Only Child's I've Got a Right, then Rae & Christian can be forgiven for sleepwalking through their sophomore effort.

5 out of 5 stars Loz Hardy at his best.......2005-01-07

This is the first Kingmaker album I'd ever heard and the one that got me into them. The best songs on here have to be 'Armchair Anarchist,' 'Sad To See You Go,' 'Ten Years Asleep' and 'Honesty Kills,' but trust me all the other songs are equally brilliant.

I would also recommend their other albums 'Eat Yourself Whole' and 'In The Best Possible Taste.'

With the mix of excellent musicianship, catchy tunes and Loz Hardy's 'bitter world view' lyrics made Kingmaker stand out from their peers during the early nineties. It's a shame Kingmaker never got anymore popular.

If any of the guys from Kingmaker are reading this; please reform, brick back some decent music into the charts.

    5 out of 5 stars A brilliant collection from a great soprano.......2007-04-30

Leontyne Price was much admired and this 4CD collection shows her outstanding vocal gifts to the best advantage. Numerous reviewers have commented on the wide-ranging styles present and I can agree wholeheartedly with them. You would be hard-pressed to find a greater compilation of Ms Price, showcasing her amazing gifts as a great singer!

5 out of 5 stars If I could have only one collection.............2006-11-12

....it would be this. Such fine singing in so many periods, languages, and styles. She is truley a great artist and this set helps you see just HOW GREAT she is. I won't go thru all the tracks but will say Cara Selve drives me wild. "When I am Laid in Earth..." comes across very nicely. There are some rare exerpts too like Gloriana, Menotti's Amelia goes to the Ball. Overall most tracks are inspired. The musicianship is to the highest standards. I JUST lOVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars Yes this is great!.......2006-10-14

But "When I am Laid in Earth" was written by PURCELL! Handel's "Care Selve", however, is also on this set, and it is GORGEOUS!!! I love just about everything on here. A few items from the fourth CD are a bit telling of her age (D'oreste d'ajace!")- but even they are fabulous. THe price of this set is unfortunate - however, it has dropped a little! :) I originally purchased it from BMG in 1994, for next-to-nothing, then "gave" it to my best friend! Two years ago, she lost hers to Hurricane Ivan, and paid a LOT for a new set!

5 out of 5 stars The Grandest Collection of Leontyne Price Arias.......2005-08-08

If you're a fan of Leontyne Price, this should be at the top of your list of her recording albums. I don't know when this was issued, but it's from the RCA Label which was her best promotional record company. It's a box set featuring dozens of arias from magnificent grand operas (some of which Leontyne Price never sang on stage in full and instead sang some bits in concert). Leontyne Price sings in fresh, beautiful and strong voice in dramatic and versatile roles, mastering each music from each composer. She masters such strikingly different masters's works as Samuel Barber (Vannessa) Webber (Der Freischutz) Wagner (Tristan and Isolde, Tannhauser) Falla (Atalanta) Mozart (Le Nozze Di Figaro). She sings the title roles of Massenet's Manon, Bizet's Carmen, Bellini's Norma, Verdi's Lady Macbeth, Amelia in Un Ballo Di Maschera, Nedda in I Pagliacci, Turandot and Suor Angelica, Flotow's Martha, and even oratorio such as Handel's Semele and Benjamin Britten's Gloriana. This is a vast repertoire, far grander in variety than I have ever known any one soprano sang. While critics will indeed compare Leontyne Price to Maria Callas (as another review critic brought up) these two sopranos could not have been any more different. It's not even a matter of their different racial backgrounds- Callas was born in Greece and became an American citizen then gave it up for French citizenship..and Price was born in Mississippi and was African-American) it's a matter of how different their approach at opera was and their vocal category. Callas was a dramatic soprano sforzando (literally "forced dramatic soprano")who would prefer to produce a choking, ugly, harsh sound merely for the dramatic effect and the integrity of the text in her lines. Leontyne Price was the definition of a soprano lyrico-spinto ("pushed" lyric-dramatic singing)which meant above all, to sound beautiful and to fill up those dramatic lines with as much vocal and tonal beauty as possible. Price had a more thrilling mezzo di voce and high soaring top register and a cleaner, smoother sound than the wobbly Callas, no offense to Callas fanatics of which there are many. It is true that Price did lose her touch in a sense in her older years (the 1970's and 80's) when her voice lacked the vibrant lyricism and attention to diction. Her 1970's Toscas and Aidas are therefore a sloppier than her 1950's and 60's Toscas and the same went for her Leonoras in both Trovatore and Forza Del Destino. Nevertheless, Price is an ageless singer. Her voice, dark, messy or bright and smooth, is still what was said of her in her debut at the Met as Leonora in Trovatore - a "bright, unfurling banner". She was goddess of the opera and paved the way for the new generation of black sopranos of today.

This collection does not showcase the more famous roles that were in fact her signature ones - Leonora from Trovatore and Forza, Aida is'nt even in here and that one even she considered her greatest role, we don't find her Madame Butterfly here. Instead we find rare pieces that she sings beautifully and dramatically, making us wish she had sung the entire operas in full on stage. She never sang a full-length Norma and that's a pity- even Grace Bumbry and Shirley Verrett did in their careers. Price seemed to enjoy singing Samuel Barber's vocal works - she opened the 1965-1966 Met season with Barber's Antony and Cleopatra (a bad production by the way but not through any fault of Miss Price but the overblown spectacle of the design of the opera itself) and here she sings his Vanessa. Benjamin Britten's Gloriana sounds lovely in her hands. Her Norma and Dona Anna in Mozart are dramatic and fiery, her Lady Macbeth darkly mysterious, her Suor Angelica peaceful with powerful inner fire and her Dialogue Des Carmelites are also sensational. Yes, many of these arias are beautiful to hear, and thank God she doesn't have any of the flaws critics keep hearing in her later recordings. Without a doubt, this is her finest album. I think you should listen via audio samples here the following to make you get this recording: the Countess aria from Nozze Di Figaro, her Manon (Adieu Petit Table) La Mamma Morta, her version of Sediziose Voce/Casta Diva from Norma, the excerpt from Carmen, "Don Ottavio son Morta...Or Sai Chi L'Onore" from Don Giovanni, Care Salve, the Dido and Aeneas excerpts, the La Traviata excerpts (Addio Del Passato) and the beautifull, mystic, haunting and well-executed Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde, which I even feel surpasses Birgit Nilsson's version. Just listen to how heart-felt that Liebestod is! I have not heard the likes of it anywhere else.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Soprano Ever Recorded.......2005-03-20

O.K. So that is only my opinion. But Leontyne Price was one of the most dedicated singers of the 20th century. Her vast repertoire is showcased in this extensive collection of arias. While to many Maria Callas will forever be the ultimate and the greatest of them all, Leontyne Price had the same poswerful, high dramatic voice, in addition a more generous chest register and a regial presence. Moreover, she overcame so much to get to the top. In her day, African-American women in opera was new. Marian Anderson was the first to get into the mainstream opera world, with much difficulty and intervention, such as Eleanor Roosevelt's support. After Marian Anderson finally landed her first role at the Met in the 50's, a new generation of black women in opera began. The 60's and 70's would see the rise of mezzo sopranos later turned to dramatic sopranos such as Grace Bumbry, Shirley Verrett and it would follow into the 80's with Jessie Norman and Kathleen Battle. Today, black women have made opera one of their highest achievements. Leontyne Price began singing in the 50's. A televised production of Tosca was not shown in some Southern states that were racistad opposed the idea of seeing a black woman in a "white" role. Leontyne Price would master the role of Tosca as successfully as Maria Callas. I think that while she is at her best in the Puccini and Verdi operas she recorded and performed (not showcased here)- Trovatore, Aida, Forza Del Destino, Madame Butterfly, Tosca, Suor Angelica. However, there is so much that she is absolutely remarkable in. I love her as Violetta in Traviata (few black women sing the traditionally white role of Violetta), Massenet's Manon, Verdi's Lady Macbeth (which was another of Shirley Verrett's great roles)Dido from Dido and Aneas, Dona Ana and Elvira in Don Giovanni, The Countess in Figaro, Bellini's Norma (she is outstanding in that powerful druid diva role). I think if we narrow it down to a few roles that she really made her own it would be 1: Aida....2:Tosca...3Dona Ana/Dona Elvira 4 Desdemona from Otello and 5..Leonoras from Trovatore and Forza.

This collection is pretty impressive. I didn't know a soprano could be that versatile. Leontyne Price is remarkable. Her rich, lyric voice, capable of plaintive and melancholy lines as well as powerful high C's and dramatic whoops, was always clean, smooth and intense. Of course, like most sopranos, she had her bad days. Her later Toscas (in the mid or late 70's) became too melodramatic and sloppy, when she used to be more mannered and poised with the role, her Cleopatra in Samuel Barber's opera was a fiaco because the production was too bizarre and messy, etc. But for the most part, mostly in Verdi, Puccini, Mozart and as Norma, she was radiant, glorious and perfect. Her background in Church music made her incredibly suited to singing Requiems, such as Verdi's Requiem. There will never be another Leontyne Price. She was a one woman Golden Age of Opera, and sang with the best of the best- Bjussi Bjorling, Giuseppe Di Stefano, Franco Corelli, Placido Domingo.

The review offerred by Amazon fails to mention the most important fact. The main performer is Leontyne Price. I can't even find the name of the other listed performers on this item. The listed conductors are 2 of 5 conductors that took part!!

    5 out of 5 stars THE FINEST.......2000-07-11

Arguably the finest Verdi soprano of our time and certainly the finest 'Aida' and 'Leonora' in "La Forza Del Destino" and "Il Trovatore," I was lucky enough to see/hear Miss Price, live at the Metropolitan Opera House and in concert at Brooklyn College. Her God-given talents combined with a passionate stage presence, handsome looks and magnetic warmth made her a unique artist--I heard once on a TV documentary that she was the most "decorated" (i.e. award-winning) musical artist of the century! This superb collection of Verdi arias include two from "Aida" which, most likely, will not ever be matched, an exquisite 'Willow Song' & 'Ave Maria' from "Otello" plus several familiar arias from "Ernani," "Trovatore," "Forza," "Traviata" and the sleepwalking scene from "Macbeth." The sound on this compilation RCA CD is fine, if not as good had it been recorded more recently than the 70's. The various conductors include Thomas Schippers and Erich Leinsdorf.

5 out of 5 stars a must have for your collection.......1999-04-15

In this recital recording of previously recorded material we are shown why Leontyne Price is the Godess of all verdian sopranos. No one has ever or will ever match her package of talent and beauty that she entertained the world with. Everything in this compilation is simply beautiful and perfect! I own this cd even though I already own most of the box sets the arias come from. If you don't have this cd you simply MUST buy it. If you've been under an opera rock and aren't familiar with Leontyne, you will be very pleased with this cd and she'll quickly become one of your favorite sopranos. and definitely your favorite Verdian soprano

    5 out of 5 stars Golden Caballe.......2003-03-18

This budget recording is an absolute steal. Unlike some other budget recordings, everything here is, in a word, quintessential Caballe. The first selections are from Il Pirata. Given that the studio recording is out of circulation, and thus very hard to find, the "Col Sorriso D'Innocenza" is not to be missed. Some fans complain that her recording in the studio doesn't reach the dizzying heights of her live performances of the role of Imogene (it doesn't), but if this is "second best", give me Caballe's second best any day of the week!

The Bellini part of the set is rounded out by Qui la Voce/Vien, Diletto, from I Puritani. Being a Sutherland fan myself, I was curious to hear how Caballe would handle this aria and cabaletta. I have to admit that in the opening cavatina and aria, she very nearly matches Sutherland, note-for-note, in the level of bravura of the singing. However, the slight disappointment comes in the cabaletta, Vien Diletto. The conducting is just too slow, and this results in Caballe not being able to match Sutherland's sparkling recording. Of course, in terms of trills, Sutherland always had the edge. It's not that one was better than the other, just that they had different, wonderful vocal gifts.

The Verdi set is equally as good. My favorites are Tu che le Vanita and the Sleepwalking Scene (from Macbeth). In the latter, she sings with a bite to her diction, and reserve the pianissimo for dramatic effect, instead of using it as a crutch (which she became notorious for in the late part of her career). Also, she gives a good delivery of O Patria Mia. She might not be Leontyne Price, but she definitely puts her stamp on the role of Aida.

As far as the role of Desdemona, just about everyone else pales next to Mirella Freni, in my mind. But, that doesn't mean that Caballe doesn't give a worthy performance.

All in all, for [a] wonderful price, you can have a splendid selection of Caballe's recordings, all done in her prime.

    5 out of 5 stars What a voice!.......2003-01-28

This CD shows yet again that Caballe has the most beautiful voice ever to issue from a human throat. It is a reissue of a compilation that was released in 1988 of older recordings.

      5 out of 5 stars UglyMunchkinReview.......2007-04-06

May the self-righteous be ignorant forever. Comparing The Esoteric to The Dillinger Escape Plan, Botch, Poison the Well, Unearth or Atreyu is like comparing Sonny Clark to Miles Davis, John Coltrane or Bill Evans...Same family tree, but sounding nothing alike. Fans new to any genre usually start out with only a few references with which to compare other acts. Once anyone fully sinks their teeth into a specific area, the broad comparisons become more refined.
Anyone who has been following Metalcore for at least a few years has had ample time to discover Coalesce, one of the genre's biggest and most reputable names since the start. Quality control in the shape of ex-members from various bands doesn't always pan out, but in the case of this album, "With the Sureness of Sleepwalking," Cory White's influence helped turn this record into a fine gem. I'm not crediting White with all the work, though. The rest of the band has been at it for years, and are what I consider to be subject matter experts.
This record is flawless. It has staying power like so many other classics: Shai Hulud's "That Within Blood Ill Tempered," Himsa's "Courting Tragedy and Disaster," and Coalesce's "0-12: Revolution in Just Listening" to name a few (as a quality comparison, NOT music or sound). You could consider this to be a "minor" classic if it makes you feel better, but regardless, The Esoteric's "With the Sureness of Sleepwalking" deserves your respect.

1 out of 5 stars This is not the TRUE Esoteric.......2007-01-17

This band is a joke, and obviously knows nothing of extreme music; for if they did they'd know this band name was already taken. This band is unaware of Esoteric from the U.K.; who play an ominous brand of abstract, insanity inducing Doom. Esoteric's music has a very spatial quality, soaked in all the deranged and malevolent thoughts of those who do not dwell on our plane of existence. Don't be fooled by these losers who are undeserving of the name from which they stole from a greater act. If you're a fan of this band, I wouldn't recommend checking out the real Esoteric; lest you would be driven mad by sounds that lurk in the dark recesses of the subconscious.

      4 out of 5 stars Surprised.......2006-06-22

I've heard a lot of both negative and positive views on this band. Wasn't really sure what to think, so I decided to just take the risk and purchase it. I was quite surprised when i began listening. There is not anything extremely different or special about these guys compared to the other million metalcore acts out today... BUT for some reason, i really like them. I don't know what it is. If your looking for something totally out of the ordinary, then i recommend you skip this band and go buy something like Psyopus (which are also very good). Yet if your looking for catchy songs with decent guitar/drum work and good lyrics, I'd go and buy it.

2 out of 5 stars Please enter a title for your review.......2006-04-01

Take the math crunch attack of Dillinger Escape Plan's Calculating Infinity, add the driving dissonant experimentalism of Botch's We Are The Romans, a dash of Isis' doomy chord ringouts, and the dullest most commercial moments of Poison The Well. Add water until every aspect of what made those bands' material effective and compelling is lost, and you've got this album.

4 out of 5 stars Very very well performed.......2006-01-30

I was extremely impressed by this CD. The tightness of this band is amazing. The guitar work and drumming is incredible. I have to admit that I'm not too impressed with the typical metal vocal performance, I prefer a vocalist to have the ability to sing as well as just scream, but I think the instrumental playing is great. Cory is a fantastic guitarist. I was knocked out when I heard it.

      11. Interview With Leontyne Price By John Pfeiffer

      Amazon.com

This 11-CD set, one might say jokingly, contains all the music ever written for the soprano voice and a bit for mezzo as well. And indeed, it's a staggering collection: In addition to her great Verdi heroines (the two Leonoras, Aida, Amelia, and Elvira in Ernani), Price is heard in her Puccini roles--Manon Lescaut, Butterfly, Tosca--and at least two dozen other roles, most of which she never sang on stage. Here are her heroic, secure Leonore in Fidelio, Strauss's high-flying Egyptian Helen, Purcell's Dido, Barber's Cleopatra, Bellini's Norma, Ariadne, Verdi's Violetta and Desdemona, Bizet's Carmen, Mozart's Countess, and Fiordiligi. Some are, naturally, more successful than others; almost none are embarrassing (Carmen comes close). In addition, she sings songs by Schubert, Schumann, and Strauss--none of them as well as say, Janet Baker or Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, and Barber's Knoxville, etc.--quite beautifully. Berlioz's Les Nuits d'été is not very good, but a group of spirituals is. In all, however, this is an amazing display by one of the century's greatest sopranos. There may be no new depths plumbed here, but the singing is a knockout. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Her Best Album.......2006-01-01

Along with the equally extensive "Prima Donna Collection" this is Leontyne Price's best album. Anyone who wants to become familiarized with her vocal technique and her art on record should own this album. It features her best work ever recorded. A lot of these arias and their respective soprano roles were not roles she sang on stage. Leontyne Price was not only a consummate artist, but a cautious one. The reason these arias, Lieder, Gospel and spirituals sound so beautiful and technically brilliant is because Leontyne was smart enough to sing them infrequently and in concert form. She did not take on new roles other than her repetitive Aidas, Leonoras, Butterfly, Toscas and Madame Lidoins, etc, because she was afraid of ruining her glorious voice too soon as many of her contemporary sopranos. Like soprano Zinka Milanov, Leontyne Price preserved the freshness and vitality of her voice through "operatic abstinence". Thus, the Norma, Salome, Manon, Lady Macbeth and even Traviata we hear on this album are well-rendered because she did NOT sing them on stage. She would have worn out her beautiful voice if she sung so many roles.

This collection is overwhelming. Leontyne Price proves herself to be a masterful artist of diverse repertoire. Pity she didn't really sing these on stage because she would have put Maria Callas and all the reigning divas before and after her to shame. Listen to her remarkable, unsurpassed Mozart repertoire. This she did sing in opera houses, probably because Mozart does not require a true lyrico-spinto heavyness and smaller opera houses can accomodate Mozartian voices that do not often rise above the staff/orchestra. She sang exquisite Fiordiligis at the Met. The arias from Cosi Fan Tutte here - Soave sia il vento, O Guarda Sorelle and the fiendishly difficult vocal showcase "Come Scoglio" with its vertiginious scales are all fine samples of Miss Price's artistry. She sang Susanna and Donna Anna with beauty and bravura. The Salome excerpt is quite thrilling. She would have made a terrific Salome but the role is quite difficult and it would have surely killed her voice. Leontyne Price was the number one Verdi soprano. Every opera cognoscente will tell you that. When you hear the excerpts from Verdi operas here - Lady Macbeth's Sleepwalking Scene, Aida's arias, Leonora's arias from Trovatore and Leonora's arias from Forza Del Destino, particularly La Virgine Del Angeli and the ravishing Pace Pace Mio Dio- are the best renditions of Verdi soprano singing. Anyone who wants to study how to sing in the letter-to-letter Verdi lyrico spinto style should hear these arias. A voice like Leontyne cannot be easily imitated. Maria Callas's own voice can be imitated as Romanian diva Angela Gheorghiu has proven. Leontyne was in a class of her own, a voice that is both dramatic and beautiful to hear. However, most people find fault in her lack of dramatic interpretation. I say they're not hearing hard enough. Yes, there is excessive beauty in her singing but she understood that the opera heroines should sound beautiful because they are beautiful and though I never saw her on stage, from the recordings I hear she sounds dramatic and character-driven enough for me to be satisfied. For a devoted fan of Leontyne Price, this album is the Holy Grail. She sings the most beautiful Norma, Madame Butterfly, Tosca, Aida, Violetta, Madame Lidoin, Suor Angelica, Susanna, Dona Ana, Gilda, Fiordiligi, Desdemona and countless other heroines. The last cd is a collection of Gospel, spirituals and patriotic songs. These "American", non-opera selections find her in beautiful voice and she is actually paying tribute to her roots. She was not only African-American, but a Southerner from Mississippi. Her voice must have been heavenly to hear in Church! This is the album that made me love Leontyne.

5 out of 5 stars Price At Her Peak.......2005-05-02

Originally a Gospel singer, Leontyne Price rose to the heights of operatic superstardom in the 60's and 70's. She enjoyed the same success Maria Callas did in the 50's. Although Callas will forever be most people's idea of the greatest soprano of the 20th century, Leontyne Price was not a force to be reckoned with. In my opinion, and this is just me, she outshone Callas and was the greater singer as far as techinicality and musicianship. Leontyne Price's best work is recorded in this album. It is her best album, together with the Prima Donna Collection. The price is expensive but it's worth every penny. Prepare to be riveted and blown away by the dynamic strength and passion of her voice as it blasts through yours stereo. While many often point out that Leontyne Price was not much of an actress, from a purely operatic/vocal level, her voice was faultless and virtuosic, powerful, passionate, beautiful, lyrical, soulful. Never have I heard a soprano so richly endowed with strong chest register- she could sing the low octaves that are found in the roles of mezzo-soprano voices or contralto voices. But she was a dramatic soprano and that's dramatic with a capital D- all the high C's were there, perfectly in place, and she was a thrilling singer when reaching for the stratosphere with her voice.

This album contains arias from operas that I didn't even know she performed- La Traviata (yes, Leontyne Price as Violetta is a moving and powerful interpretation, executed with sublime beauty. She finds herself the equal to Callas in the role- for Callas had a big voice for a role that calls for the "dying" effect. Thus, Price, like Callas, could sing roles that call for beauty and not just dramatic vigor. It's unfortunate that unlike the stars that were rising in her time- Joan Sutherland, Beverly Sills and Montserrat Caballe- Price never mastered the bel canto repertoire - Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini (although she sang a sensational Norma, excerpts are found in this recording). But her strongest suit was Verdi. She had the voice Verdi was looking for in a soprano- rich, dramatic, beautiful, able to fill up the lines with smoky and velvety hues and a gleaming high top. Check out her Amelia in Un Ballo In Maschera, her Leonora in Trovatore, her Leonora in La Forza Del Destino. Of course, her greatest role, her signature role, and one which she connected with on a personal/ancestral level was that of Aida. The first selections in this recording are from that masterpiece. As Aida, she was at her best. It was easy for her somehow, when most other sopranos tackle the role with difficulty. She conveys grace, nobility, passion and spirituality in the role of the tragic Ethiopian princess.

Further roles she excelled in that are on this recording is Desdemona in Otello, which she sung opposite Placido Domingo. Their masterful voices blend together harmonically and gloriously in the Act 1 Love Duet. She's quite the ground-breaking artist. Most Violettas in Traviata or Desdemona in Otello are Caucasian lyric soprano (Desdemona was white, Otello was black, that was Shakespeare's intention) but in opera, race does not matter and Leontyne Price's voice made her a star in a time when it was incredibly difficult for a black woman to sing opera. From the start of the century, opera was always associated with white Europeans and later on Americans. But Leontyne Price followed the inspirational example of the gutsy contralto Marian Anderson, who suffered a lot of rejection in opera due to skin color in pre-Civil Rights Movement 30's, 40's and 50's. Finally in the late 50's, Anderson, after a lifetime of singing only in private concerts and recitals, debuted at the Met as Ulrica in Un Ballo. Leontyne Price immediately picked up where she left- singing all the soprano diva roles typically associated with white singers - especially Tosca. Her Tosca is second to her Aida. As Tosca, she encompasses the diva who dies for love in the most thrilling way.

Other than Tosca, Puccini heroines were just as magnificent vehicles for her voice. She sang Madame Butterfly to great acclaim. I dont know how she did it but she suddenly ceased to be herself and became the frail, naive, lovesick Japanese Geisha. Softness and fragility is also mixed with the maturity of a woman in love, with passion and dramatic vocal color. She sang La Rondine with equal success, though this role is more along the lines of Violetta/Traviata. She sang Suor Angelica, she sang in modern works such as Barber's Antony and Cleopatra- in that infamous Zefferelli production- she sang Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, she sang in Dialoge of the Carmelites. All these are on here, along with her Baroque specialties- Dido in Dido and Aeneas. Her Mozart voice is also the best I've heard, really, even with a more dramatic and beautiful charm than other singers I've heard. She sang the acrobatic role of Fiordiligi in Cosi Fan Tutte, both Dona Ana and Donva Elvira in Don Giovanni. I prefer her as Dona Ana, she is all fire, despair, intensity and repressed desire, but she sings a hysterical and lovesick Elvira with a passion as well. She even sang the Countess in Le Nozze Di Figaro. But the sky was the limit to Price. She even sang, in a Jessie Norman way, the Wagner role of Isolde. Her "Liebestod" is the greatest I've heard since Birgit Nilsson, with a passion that stemmed from her religious Gospel heart.
This is a great album and I recommend it to any fan of Price and any fan of opera in general. If you have never heard Price and want to start somewhere, start with this one. This one or the Prima Donna Collection.

5 out of 5 stars of course world class.......2000-08-14

Price is amazing. I will have to also mention that Joan Sutherland in the 1960 is even more incredible, if that's possible. Check Dame Joan out, you will not be sorry. But Price is a D flawless diamond set by Cartier, in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars the greatest american soprano of the 20th century.......1999-12-12

This collection of arias, art songs, and spirituals is truly amazing for the sheer breadth and depth of this soprano's artistry. It is hard to imagine any Verdi soprano after Ms. Price who could offer us the smoky richness of her vocal color, and there are so many wonderful selections, many of them being roles she did not perform on stage. Among my personal favorites are her scene from Dialogues of the Carmelites, the Letter Scene from Eugene Onegin, and the drama of her Lady Macbeth. For those of us who heard Ms. Price over the years in opera and concert, this collection brings back wonderful memories...It is truly a must-have for any serious opera lover.
