5 out of 5 stars predawn hangout, late night rendezvous.......2003-11-25

Certain CDs take on characteristics other than the music offered, it's what I would call "flavor". On MOS's Late Night Sessions III, Terry Farley and Pete Heller manage a tour of the late night coffee houses that double as trendy hotspots scattered throughout the UK. The special kind of places where people tend to drift toward, gather, mix, mingle, exchange ideas, contacts, discoveries, share stories, and hip each other to upcoming events. These bastions of culture accidentally become the marks of embarkation for the evenings activities and the ultimate safe return when exhaustion sets in. Places that unintentionally become proving ground on the current scene. This social phenomena is essential in understanding this very comfortable, honest collection of wonderful, downtempo house tunes corralled for this compilation. Farley and Heller know their stuff. Meant as an after-hours cool down collection from the rough and tumble club chaos, these 2 disc serve as an educational journey through the best of house music's history. Not all tunes are current, but remain relative and essential for completion of the project. This isn't just entertainment, it's a package deal of substance and style. 25 choice cuts to numerous too mention but a few: John Cutler and DJ Roman - The Ride, King Britt - Scuba, The Good Reverend Dr. Gary Henry - Faith, Francois K - Time and Space, Scott Grooves - Organ Nights, Blue Six - Music and Wine, Fresh and Low - Going Away, Soul Dharma - Flower, Elegia - From Nowhere With Love, Nick Holder - Paradise, and Mutiny - Bliss. It all has a familiarity like all these tunes have been hanging out together, grooving, being buddies for a long time. Farley and Heller are hipped as the mix flows like the blue river Danube for Mozart in 1755 - clean, uncluttered, with grassy picnic banks, and late night frolicking swims. Grab a latté or Café Oley, add some pastries, crumbled cheese, and gather round with company you love to keep. Late Night Sessions III will score the fond memory deep into your subconscious mind. You can play it back time and again with each spin of this subliminal album.

5 out of 5 stars The late night/chillout CD to finish off a night of clubbin'.......2002-02-07

This was the third and final installment of the Ministry of Sound's Late Night Sessions. The excellence that was demonstrated on the first two CDs in the series (the first mixed by DJ Harvey and the second by X-Press 2) continued with Farley and Heller.

The first CD of this third volumn has so many tracks that stand-out as real gems like "Ncameu", a very soulful, deep house tune. "Equitorial" is also a soothing track as well, but with a more Latin, tribal beat. One of my favorites is the "The Ride" which is definitely deep house, but on the progressive/trance side. And King Britt's "Scuba" is definitely not to be missed. But, my absolute favorite on CD 1 is "Faith", a very deep, dark, soulful track that lurks around with a very meaningful spoken refrain. After listening to this track, you will definitely believe that "Faith is your best friend." And the Latin-infected "Feel What You Know" will give you a little invigoration before coming back down.

The second CD is deeper and slower than the first. It is obvious that there is a progression going on here. As the CD moves, the tracks become darker and more mellow. The best track on CD 2 is Blue Six's "Music and Wine". This is definitely one of the best deep house track ever. It has an excellent groove that certainly helps you relax. And probably many clubbers and househeads can probably relate to the track's chorus. Then comes "Singing Da Blues" which reminds me of Billie Holiday. The track is steady, haunting, almost hypnotic and the acoustic guitar adds the perfect touch. Other favorites are "Float", "Going Away", and "From Nowhere with Love."

Overall, this is a fantastic CD. Farley and Heller really did an excellent job choosing, then mixing the tracks together. If you can get your hands on any of the Ministry of Sound's "Late Night Sessions" compilations, you will not be disappointed. This Farley and Heller mix is probably my favorite, but all of them are excellent. These CDs have the quality and skill that are lacking on the MoS' current "Chill-Out" Sessions series.

    Go for it!

4 out of 5 stars Diversity Helps Make These "Late Night Sessions" Enjoyable........2003-04-21

Diversity is the greatest strength on "Late Night Sessions," two CDs of after-hours grooves that feature a total of 40 tracks. Ministry of Sound runs the gamut from retro soul ("Get Down Saturday Night" by Oliver Cheatham), clever English pop ("The Further I Slide" by Badly Drawn Boy), bouncy electronica (Royksopp's "Eple"), to slick r&b ("Piano & I" by Alicia Keys). In addition, bonus points are earned for giving nods to forward-thinking hip hop ("Things We Do" by Q-Tip) as well as old school dance veterans Mr. Fingers and Frankie Knuckles, who make very stellar and memorable appearances on this disc. Overall, the material goes down as easily as chocolate milk, but there are flaws. "Late Night Sessions" commits the ultimate act of butchery by criminally trimming the lovely 10 minute excursion "Moments in Love" by the Art of Noise to a mere 3 minutes. And Earl Zinger gets the distinguished prize for Worst Song Cover thanks to his desecration of Blur's "Song 2." But still, this is actually one of the better compilations by Ministry of Sound, and it ranks closer to the top than the bottom. Grade: B+.

This cd was like nothing i have heard before. it wasn't good, i wouldn't even call it "house" music if you want house music try DJ Bad Boy Bill or Dj Irene. This was more like acid jazz. it just wasn't there for me.

5 out of 5 stars what an introduction.......2003-09-24

I'm no muso, dj or whatever but this cd was introduced to me by my dad and was my first exploration into house music. It's one of those cd's that you can listen to from beginning to end without jumping a track although the tracks 'steam' and 'don't f**k with my sh*t are standouts for me. Haven't come across anything quite like it. Can someone else review it?

I bought this album on release and actually have bought it three times since usually because after a long night of partying friends and i listen to it at home while chilling and someone begs me to keep it. (They are quite hard to come by now) I have just now bought myself another one and on first listening it is just as freash as it was the first time round. I am sure it will be stolen again...
The Ministry Of Sound should pay this guy whatever he wants to do another!!! The XPress 2 one didn't touch it.

      5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2000-07-19

Amazing ! DJ Harvey has played with everyone, the old school (Larry Levan, Francois K, Frankie Knuckles, etc) to the new school (DJ Sneak, Doc Martin, the Wicked Crew, etc.), and his music reflects just that. He goes everywhere from the latest house track to those classic disco, funk, and soul numbers, and does it in such a smooth and fluid way that leaves all of us wanting more. This CD is timeless . Never get tired of it . Don't sleep on this one . Thanks Harvey .
