Editorial Reviews
Don Verbrilli has been at it musically for over 20 years. During those exquisite years of musical adventure, the clarinet never yielded him a fat record contract, nor did acoustic guitars, or tambourines, a Les Paul, his voice, or a guiro. And so, turning ultimately to musical machines and software for that push into superstardom, Verbrilli found himself only a power switch away from the elite musical circles. "I figured machines would be easier..." he recalls, "once I got them all plugged in it was like, wow... why wasn't I doing this 15 years ago?"
Following the success of Many Coloured Butterflies, his first album, Verbrilli began work on "Leisure War." Again he enlisted the help of veteran producer DJ Dogg. "I wanted to do something very different, and radical," explains Verbrilli. "I wanted this album to be natural. Really natural. So easy that the songs would seem to flow out of me effortlessly. I came to the decision that the best way to achieve this would be for me to be completely absent during the song creation process. That way my unintentional influence on the songs would be removed, and they would be free to float out in pristine purity- intrinsically me. It was a truly Zennist idea, very Mao. My guru felt that the burden of actually working on music would be just too torturous given my previous success. He suggested just letting the album happen." For some time, nothing at all happened. But Verbrilli was assured that something was definitely brewing
mysterious things were said to be transpiring in the studio as it stood empty day after day. Suddenly, without warning, Verbrilli got a late night call from the studio saying that the album was done. It had all come together very suddenly and swiftly, and was ready for release. "I cant tell you how overjoyed I was. It was like a great weight had been lifted off my chest...I realized now how Christine Dion, or Paula Aguilera must feel in that special hour of consummation. I felt that the time I hadnt invested in the project was crucial to its completion. It is a very special album."
Product Description
"Leisure War"
is the Verbrilli Sounds second full CD release. The previous album, the richly textured "Many Coloured Butterflies", was released on Seattles Sweet Mother Records in 2000. It received excellent reviews from XLR8R and Mixer magazine, and tracks from the album found their way into the hands, heads and DJ sets of Roni Size, LTJ Bukem, and DJ Krush, amongst others. "Views" was licensed for the Wallpaper Mach 1.5 compilation alongside songs by Thievery Corporation, Air, and Jazzanova.
Leisure War as an idea, actually refers to two separate battles that take place typically in the context of urban living. The first battle is that waged by corporations, churches, organizations, politicians, individuals of power, all vying for a slice or more of our free time. These forces make a living by profiting from our leisure decisions- that is, how we choose to spend our time, and our money. The second battle is an individual one, and it is our own fight for free time in a world that seems to want to take so much of it from us. Im guessing these two wars have gone on for a long time, and probably wont end anytime soon. I suppose this album of mine, which doesnt try in any concise way to present or study these ideas, is really just my own little weapon to wield in times of war. Its a piece of work created in my leisure time, designed perhaps to take your ears hostage for awhile- maybe take a bit of your money too if Im lucky.
