4 out of 5 stars Rendezvous Lounge Vol 2.......2007-05-15

I simply enjoyed the European styled fusion-jazz format. It was a worthy purchase and look forward to more of Mark Gorbulew's work in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-12

I love this CD the music is melodic with an slightly up tempo beat. Its relaxing but doesn't put you to sleep.

2 out of 5 stars High Expectations Unrealized..........2006-11-12

This is a fair cd. The problem is it is not as good as the first Rendevous Lounge. Round one was a classic with great cut after great cut. Round 2 has good cuts but in my mind none stands out or has a must have quality. As is often the case with movie sequels this cd doesn't compare. However it is not bad as passive background music.

5 out of 5 stars sophisticated overall jazz feel.......2006-04-03

This is a great CD. Each performance has quality song writing, musical voicings and performances. The selections are varied, but related in style and 'energy' so there is great flow.

It is not like some albums which just sample other records and artists, the songs sound Fresh and original. It is also not like 'trance' which repeats one sound/bar/phrase ad nauseum. The selections are varied, but related in style and 'energy' so there is great flow.

Overall, the selections have a sophisticated smooth, brazillian or NY jazz feel. Lots of talent on this CD!

I enjoy this music while walking, working on the computer, doing light chores with my headphones on, or just listening. Great Brunch music on a Sunday morning too!

5 out of 5 stars Love this Rendezvous Lounge CD.......2006-03-23

We previously bought Rendezvous Lounge I and really enjoyed it. It's a little more techno and eclectic. "Lounge II," is more mellow and polished and we love it.

    3 out of 5 stars Solid Cuts.......2004-05-27

The second edition of Water Music's Jazz Lounge is a solid two discs of tunes. It makes up for some of the downside of the first one - the flow is better. Water Music's also done a few other comps, like Cafe Roma, etc.

Tunes I enjoyed were the remix to Bebel Gilberto's "So Nice", Praful's "One Day Deep", Barrio Jazz Gang's "Hot Jacket", Banda Nova's "Sambud" and of course, Eddy & Dus's mix on "Round About Midnight". Gerardo Frisina's cut is also pretty sweet, and I was surprised to see Mr. Scruff's "Giffin" remixed here along with Bossa Cuca Nova's "Guanabara". There's enough good tunes here and middle of the road tunes to warrant this at least a look-see. The style is from lounge (De-Phazz, Ursula 1000, etc) to chill out to nu-jazz and electric-jazz.

This cd wasn't without fault - like Panaphonic's cut. Gees... it NEEDS to be remixed. Liliana Gimenez is cool but if you want a voice to be like an instrument, they should've called in Rosalia De Souza for this. And the loop to it sounded so forced and almost cliche. Although I dig the Gotan Project cut and several others, did they really need two versions of "Round About Midnight"? And you can get most of the best tracks here on other, better CD's like Break & Bossas, Paris Lounges, Verve Re-Mixed, etc. Likewise, if you dig this, check out those compilations and "Paris St. Germain Des Pres Cafe" series on Wagram & a new comp called "Freedom Jazz Dance" on the Schema label.

4 out of 5 stars A Second Helping of Early Three Suns.......2001-01-29

This CD is a godsend for anyone trying to find playable material from The Three Suns' early stuff. Most of the tunes are snappy and upbeat. The craftmanship of the music is just awesome. These guys were GOOD. If a retro blast of Lounge Music is your cup of tea, by all means buy this.

4 out of 5 stars The Three Suns shine, glow, and sparkle.......1999-05-16

This is an excellent disc for those who like very early "Lounge" music---in this case featuring a swirling organ and a zippy accordion. While a few of the tracks are dim, the great majority of them are peppy, happy, juicy songs that you will greatly enjoy. One surprise this disc held for me was the track "That's A-Plenty," because this music was none other than Jackie Gleason's "And away we go" theme. Well worth it, even though the technical aspects of the CD are less than we would like; then again, we are talking about songs recorded 50 years ago.

    Album Description

"Lounge Story 2" retraces the history of lounge music born in the 1960's while showcasing its influences on contemporary musical motifs. Exquisitely chosen, it forgoes the typical downtempo, chill-out and 'back to mine' grooves in favor of a sophisticated and chic musical program that is both classic and contemporary, while tipping its hat to the French 'easy-listening' or 'lounge-core' underground movement.

"Lounge Story 2" offers something for everyone. Similar to internationally-acclaimed releases like "Verve Remixed I & II," "Blue Note Revisited" and the ingenious "Hotel Costes" series, the compilation is an intoxicating and adventurous journey through the multi-dimensional world of jazz and jazz-influenced sounds. From bossa nova, future jazz, swing, broken beat, house, samba, Afro-Latin rhythms, jazz-funk fusion, textural electronic & organic downtempo grooves and lush smoky jazz nuances, the rapturous collection is a seductive and bewitching tour-de-force essential to old and new school heads alike.

Highlights include: Moondog's infectious and swinging 1969 pearl "Lament I, Bird's Lament" (which was immortalized in Mr. Scruff's 1999 international smash and Lincoln Car commercial theme "Get A Move On"), Carol Ventura's sweepingly cinematic "I Want To Be With You," Eric Pierre feat. Ladygatica's sumptuous "Channel Zero (Shade of Soul Remix)," Patchwork's timeless Afro-Latin inspired rare groove "Summertime," Nicola Conte's brilliant re-working of Truby Trio's brilliant "High Jazz," John Beltran's cosmic future-jazz drenched "Heaven and Earth," Hajime Yoshizawa's symphonic broken-bossa masterpiece "I Am With You" featuring the indelible vocals of Smoke City chanteuse Nina Miranda and co-produced by Chris Franck (Smoke City / Da Lata) and Colorblind's penetrative slow-burning closing track "Erotica."

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome tracks!.......2007-03-15

This is one of my favourite lounge/jazz compilations, very catch tunes on here!Navarone and Hajime Yoshiwaza are my favourite tracks on here.Definately worth checking out!

4 out of 5 stars Great collection of tracks..........2005-05-26

I was rather impressed with the collection of groovy, mellow, and even jumping at times, tracks on this CD. A Must-have? Sure.

The opening track, "Lament No. 1," was one that I recognized as Mr. Scruff (didn't know that until I found that song on radio) brilliantly interpolated that song into "Get A Move On" which I heard in the infamous Lincoln commercials before I even knew who made it and before I realized that it was actually a song and not some jingle the automaker came up with. I really enjoyed Patchworks' rendition of "Summertime" even with its midi-sounding quality, it was still something to nod your head to. "High Jazz" has to be THE high point of the album, and Nicola Conte and the Truby Trio did an excellent job in mixing simple vocals with a stunning piano/sax bit and electrifying percussion, all while throwing a bit of electronica into the mix. This song, if you ask me, is what Lounge is all about or should be about.

Other songs that were enjoyable were "Channel Zero" with its poeticism and a nice beat, "Heaven and Earth", especially toward the end where the bass is so different from the first half that you wonder whether it's the same song but it's all woven together rather nicely, "Shihab's Habit" with its staccato-style piano and hard-hitting percussion score, and "Pascalito's Theme" which has a very nice fast but soothing tempo...gotta love that keyboard..."I Am With You" was cool, too...albeit I can't understand the lyrics, half of it is in another language (or languages, I can't tell)!

And who can forget "Mannix" by Klement Julienne, what a song! THAT is how music should sound! Smooth, vibrant, rhythmic, with a kickin' percussion bit, a catchy chorus line, beautiful guitar and brass compositions, and a very mixed range of scores, if you wanna get technical.

The low points, however, included "I Want to Be With You" (and maybe it's because I'm not high on vocals or something) and "B. Erotica" (again, vocals). But the other songs that have vocals, like Channel Zero were actually pleasing.
Overall, great album, a great collection...

I would also pick up "The Best of Cookin'" for a great two-disc compilation or jazz from the West Coast, including a few of DJ Greyboy's hits, such as "Grey's Groove" which has a very upbeat jazzy feel with its mellow piano and the fluent sounds of a dancing flute and a bass line with a hip-hop style percussion (even though it's a drum loop), a truly eclectic but enjoyable mix.

4 out of 5 stars The album description says it better than I can........2004-06-16

All I can say is that IMHO it lives up to the description. Although I have enjoyed music from the lounge genre, I might not have purchased this CD had I stumbled on it here at amazon, especially if no one had reviewed it. I heard it playing in a music store and bought it after hearing a couple of cuts. If what you hear in the samples appeals to you, take the plunge. If you were born after 1960 and/or think this might be 'techno' lounge or trance, you will probably not be happy with it.

2 cd set, just absolutely wonderful. A lot of break-beat and ambient feels without the new age BS. Some solid artists such as LTJ that happen to grace this album. On occasions, the second cd can kind of sound like porno music, but I really don't care, I dig it. I will admit there is a track or two that I don't care for, but when i'm just sitting back, chillin', it doesn't really matter.

      5 out of 5 stars A outstanding album from an all-too-much-abused band.......2005-05-16

Though jazz snobs may dismiss the Elgart Brothers for what one writer has called (and I'm paraphrasing) "the tired-businessman's bounce", they got off with a bang with this superb maiden Columbia effort. Here they established their unique sound: the sharp sax staccato, the soft unmuted horns, the piano-less rhythm section with its close-miked guitar. Unsurprisingly the Elgarts attributed no small part of their success to Glenn Miller, and really this band is an offshoot, for though Miller was getting impatient with big-band music before his untimely death, and it's hard to imagine him playing arrangements quite like these, the Miller sound is definitely there, haunting, dreamy, always under the surface, even without the clarinet lead.

What opens one's ears are the four previously unissued tracks, several demos likely recorded before the "Sophisticated Swing" takes, in a Brooklyn ballroom -- and with a piano (Will "The Expert" Friedwald's booklet discussion is typically unclear). The piano adds little, and the Elgarts were wise to discard it, but then these spine-tingling charts didn't need help, like George Williams's "Easy Pickin'" and especially "My Heart Belongs to Daddy," which turns that tiresome song about forbidden love into an electrifying zap. Alas the Elgarts never did swing enough. Had they credibly done so this band could have ranked with the greatest jazz ensembles instead of ultimately being reduced to the hackneyed two-left-footed fake-disco arrangements of "Hooked on Swing." But this is tremendous swing -- and jazz -- however you slice it.

Peculiar programming note: This album also includes two tracks from their later album "Band of the Year" -- but not their most famous song of all, the "Bandstand Boogie." Then again the whole "Best of the Big Bands" series was plagued with such non-sequiturs. One hopes Sony BMG gets around to the first-class reissues this band deserves, not just continuing to palm them off as licensed product. (The current Collectables double-album leaves out the six extra tracks.) Further peculiar programming note: the "ace" CBS engineer Larry Keyes omits the first note of the title tune; given his stellar career he probably never noticed.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best dance band recordings you'll find anywhere........1998-12-20

The Elgart Band played with a bouncy style and a rich, punctuated sound that became definitive of the "fifties". Charlie Albertine's arrangements are, as always, clear, sensual, and fun. The production and sound of the recordings (produced by George Avakian and engineered by Fred Plaud in the legendary CBS 30th Street church studio) are superb. Even though this particular CD - which was the band's first LP for Columbia - is monoraul, when you put it on you'll feel like the band is right there in your living room. A great experience for anyone who enjoys the sound of swing.

5 out of 5 stars try it..you'll love the big band sound.......1998-11-22

been an elgart fan since "zing was a single" very good cd. for non-electronic fans!

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Dance Band.......1998-10-20

Many critics consider Les Elgart's band to be the best dance band of the big band era.

Arriving on the big band scene near the close of the era (1950's), the Elgart sound swept the American dance scene.

The unique blending of base sax and trombone, along with use of the guitar for rythym, was a new innovation. The chords, frequently minor, produce almost painfully beautiful musical responses on the part of the listener.

This smooth, and happy swing album is sure to please the new swing generation.

      Buy and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Music from the Motherland.......2001-11-03

When i first got the album i didnt know what to expect. Once i listened to it i was amazed. The album has a mix of house and late nite club grooves intertwined w/heavy african elements (i.e drumming, chanting)This album is a definite purchase, especially for those wanting someting deeper in their music.

5 out of 5 stars Do It Again and Again !!!.......2000-08-08

I just hope there will be an Afro-Lounge 3,4,5 on and on. As a matter of a fact where is 1. Any way, Joe Claussell's Nigerian Udu drumming and chanting on track 3 is nothing short of genius that wont get its credit. He should do more with Udu drumming in house tracks. That deep sound from the clay pots vibrate a dance floor to no end. And Watch Them Come by Men From the Nile, track 5 is just otherworldly.

      5 out of 5 stars nitegrooves!.......2000-04-11

this is a really good compilation. you got ron trent/anthony nicholson (USG) on remix duties, roland clark, and deep house don chris brann, who's "cascades of color" track really stands out, well worth buying this for the track alone.

4 out of 5 stars All the bliss that is Afro inspired House music........1999-11-30

Twelve tracks, unmixed, this CD feature's a collection of Hi's (King Street/Nitegrooves guru) latest gems.  Track one, MORE THAN GOLD (Shelter Mix) succeeds in both name and delivery although a bit stretched.  The ruff, ragga vocal delivery adds to the tracks unique style.  How best to describe this album?  Afro Beat meets Jazz meets house.  And the point where they intersect is pure bliss.  Track 5, WATCH THEM COME by Men from the Nile featuring Peven Everett. "They come and they come From the around the world" Another crowd pleaser, Cascades of Color (Journey to Color Mix) by Ananda Project featuring Gaelle Addison. "Sunrise and the sunset when the night falls . . ." Beautiful 4/4 vocals, soothing track, tight production, excellent delivery.  If you are looking for House music incorporating Afro, Cuban and Jazz elements, cop this album for a musical journey evoking the bliss of all that is Afro inspired House.

      Album Description

2007 reissue of this collection of rare music library recordings. Volume 2 sees Blow Up's founder and DJ Paul Tunkin entering the vaults of De Wolfe, Amphonic and again KPM. As with a bulk of Exclusive Blend 1, many of these tracks were receiving their first commercial airing on this album's release. The album also introduced James Clarke's Wild Elephants to the world, which was subsequently picked up by Gap and used on the 1999 'Khaki A Go-Go' worldwide campaign. As a thank-you from the writer it was re-titled 'Blow Up A-Go-Go' and became the title track for the successful V2 / Blow Up compilation 'Blow Up A-Go-Go! Dancefloor Classics from The Legendary Blow Up Club'. This album includes tracks from many great music library theme writers including Keith Mansfield, Alan Hawkshaw and Syd Dale, and includes the Alan Moorhouse Hammond heavy classic "Soul Skimmer" and the spaced out tribal funk of Nick Ingman's "Tripwire". Nice solid & professional collection of some of the best known British soundtrack composers. It's nowhere near as much fun as the EASY TEMPO or the BEAT AT CINECITTA collections - but it's a solid collection.
