Although he never really left, it only felt that way because much of Alice Cooper's 80s and 90s output has been, to be kind, forgettable. Hard rock fans were put off by the turn towards frigid techno and all but gone by Cooper's slash and burn metal years.

2005's return to the stinging hard rock that put him on the map is a welcome look back in anger. Kicking off with the gritty, driving guitars and snappy lyrical twists of "Woman of Mass Distraction," Cooper's sleazy voice sounds as robust and distinctive as it did three decades ago. Riff happy nitroburners such as "Steal that Car," "Your Own Worst Enemy" and especially the "Under My Wheels" licks of "You Make Me Wanna" show that Cooper, now pushing 60, still has plenty of gas in the tank. A lovely, entirely non-ironic cover of The Left Banke's "Pretty Ballerina," complete with harpsichord and string section, proves that Cooper hasn't lost his touch with "Only Woman Bleed" style ballads either.

Dirty Diamonds, with it's unnecessary nod to hip-hop ("Stand") and weak stab at country ("The Saga of Jesse Jane"), won't knock classics such as School's Out, Billion Dollar Babies and Love it to Death from their well-deserved perch as archetypal blueprints of Cooper's Halloween-styled gutsy rocking. Yet, at its best, the raw guitars and tightly arranged songs refreshingly recapture the brash attack and dark humor of his glory years. --Hal Horowitz

Coop's best album in years.......2007-01-13

Simply put, this is easily Alice Cooper's best studio album since "From The Inside". It combines all the classic elements of vintage Cooper, both original band and solo Alice, and the songwriting and performances are top notch all the way-Alice's voice is in phenomenal shape-he sounds amazing for his age. Just tracks 1 thru 7 are so good, they alone make this worth buying. After that, quality drops off just a bit, but comes roaring back with the catchy "Your Own Worst Enemy" - a short rocker with hilarious lyrics and a great riff. Highlights are the Stones-y "Sunset Babies", the T-REX swagger of "Perfect", the title track, hard garage rockin' opener "Woman Of Mass Distraction", and the brilliant cover of The Left Banke's "Pretty Ballerina". I also dig all the tambourine, and added percussion on most of these tracks-it gives it a vintage feel to it, like the Stones and The Beatles used to do. Not As Good As Eyes.......2006-12-18

"Diamonds" follows in the footsteps of the previous disc "Eyes Of Alice Cooper". The Coop goes for a sound very similar to the original Alice Cooper band with a straight ahead rock n roll format with plenty of grungy guitar, heavy drums and very few keyboards. Unfortunately the material here is not that strong for the most part. Maybe its just me, but I feel like the lyrics are somewhat "dumbed down" from the high standards Cooper is famous for. Songs like "Woman Of Mass Distraction", "Steal That Car", "Perfect", "You Make Me Wanna", "Sunset Babies" are just very average rock nr roll with lyrics that just don't work that well. The music is all solid hard rock, but again there is not a lot that really stands out aside from a few great guitar solos here and there from Ryan Roxie. On the other hand there are a few diamonds in the rough to be found on the disc. For the first time in over a decade Cooper writes a transvestite song. "The Saga Of Jesse Jane" is a hilarious country ballad about a cross dressing truck driver who gets arrested while wearing a wedding dress. Yea, Cooper has been down this road before, but he can still pull off material like this that can't help but leave a smile on your face. The title track "Dirty Diamonds" is a great rocker with a chorus that won't leave your mind. "Six Hours" is a good ballad and "Zombie Dance" is another good comment on society. Cooper covered this territory before too, but "Zombie Dance" sounds fresh and energized. Alice even tries to tackle hip hop with the rap laden "Stand". Although I am not a fan of the genre, Cooper actually pulls it off quite well and I like the song. Overall I don't think this album is quite as good as "Eyes", but it does have its moments. Fans of early Alice Cooper band might really eat this up.

LISTEN TO THE FANS. YES, ALICE RETURNS TO HIS ROOTS!!.......2006-10-05

True ALICE fans know. This feels like OLD ALICE, man!! Take my word for it. I've been a fan since 1973. Or, don't take my word. Sample it for yourself. ALICE COOPER hasn't made music this good since his days with the ALICE COOPER BAND. At the start of the new millennium(how I hate that term), ALICE COOPER turned out 2 hot and wicked metal albums!! BRUTAL PLANET and DRAGONTOWN. Then he goes way back and makes THE EYES OF ALICE COOPER. What a great album!! COOPER continues to discover his roots one more time with DIRTY DIAMONDS. I swear it's like he's been REBORN with these records. Even though these songs are completely new, I swear I hear strains from the KILLER and the LOVE IT TO DEATH lp's. The song YOU MAKE ME WANNA feels like YEAH, YEAH, YEAH from KILLER, for sure. And listen to THE BALLAD OF JESSE JANE(hilarious). It's the DWIGHT FRY melody!! Wow!! One of the best new songs is the blues ballad SIX HOURS. Incredible!! His voice just gets better with age. Read the rave reviews and sample the album. Make sure you sample all the albums I mention in this review. Those of you, like me, who have been away from The COOP for a while, here's your chance to discover his music again. You won't be sorry. ALICE IS GREAT AGAIN!!

Alice As Good As Ever.......2006-09-15

I give 5 stars to a record if I like it all the way thru and some things really stand out as great. Dirty Diamonds passes that test. Hey I had his earliest albums and this one is just as good or better than anyhing he's done (the effect in its day of Love it to Death excepted). I had recently bought the Left Banke just to hear one of my favorite lost songs - Pretty Ballerina. Then Alice goes and covers it and covers it well. He proves he has a great singing voice on this one. Stand is a great message song and one of the best he's done. The Ballad of Jessie Jane is unique and fun. It's quality Alice Cooper. A little more mature but still weird enough. I'm grateful a nice guy like him can still be this creative in the rock experience.

I enjoyed this album -

In the 1970s Alice Cooper pioneered the Music Video industry when he produced his video tribute to rock & roll theater which he called WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE. Unfortunately, Alice was never able to achieve significant commercial success, because he lacked the most important ingredient in the modern music industry - sex appeal.
How else could one explain the record sales of Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson or Boy George?

Alice's songs are about characters.
He has the unique ability to make you feel empathy for the tortured soul in his songs, without arousing sympathy. Empathy does not equal sympathy. I was always taught that
Empathy = feeling with, while
Sympathy = feeling for or pity.
Sometimes the experience of sympathy clouds the emotional purity of empathy. Much like emphasis on the ambience or quality of service often distracts with the enjoyment of food.

With Alice's music, for a brief shining moment you actually invoke the feelings or moods of the characters drawn from within Mr. Cooper's twisted soul. When you receive DIRTY DIAMONDS, play tracks 3,4,5 & 9 for immediate gratification.

Glitter and Grime.......2005-09-02

Probably the oddest thing about Alice Cooper's new "Dirty Diamonds" is its label affiliation. Now signed to the New West stable of artists in the USA (but on Spitfire Intl elsewhere), Alice shares roster space with -- Dwight Yoakam and John Hiatt?!? Yes, it is THAT New West label, and Alice is probably the noisiest act on the list. But fear not, I don't think Alice will be touring the folk festival circuit anytime soon.

In Fact, "Dirty Diamonds" is a hotter and more rocking album than "The Eyes Of Alice Cooper." His new, young band riffs and rips from the opening of the album, crashing into "Woman Of Mass Distraction" like it was 1976. You also are given the added treat of NO SAPPY BALLADS! The only time the tempo slows down is for the quirky "Pretty Ballerina" and a tread into old-school Alice turf in "Six Hours" (think "Cold Ethyl" meets "Mary-Anne"). The other thing that "Dirty Diamonds" has over its predecessor is a better production job. "Diamonds" is far more polished and finished sounding, and from some interviews I've read, it was because this time Alice allowed the band the time to overdub and do multiple takes, something "Eyes" obviously needed more of. Doesn't hurt that these 11 rockers and two ballads are far better songs, too.

Thus, for the greater part of "Dirty Diamonds," Alice rocks it. The topics are flippant and fun, like "Run Down The Devil" (he's the ultimate road kill...) and the western cross dressing twisted trucker tale of "The Saga of Jessie Jane" (although I liked his Elvis impersonation on "Dragontown" than his Johnny Cash here).

And is if to prove that he can still mix it up with the best of them, the bonus track with rapper Xzibit should be a hit. If Iggy can cruise with Sum-41, then Alice should be able to bring Detroit rock to a little West Coast rap. Who knows, maybe we'll see Alice and the band on an episode of "Pimp My Ride."

Alice Cooper Dirty Diamonds (Import).......2005-08-28

If you are buying the import version of Dirty Diamonds for the bonus track "The Sharpest Pain", DON'T. This $35.99 import version is no different than the American release which can be purchased for considerably less money. Amazon needs to revise the product description before anyone else gets ripped off like I did. The only difference between the import version and the American version is that the import version comes in a traditional jewel case whereas the American release comes in a digi-pac. As far as the quality of the music, I feel it is good but not one of Alice's best releases.

still going strong.......2005-08-21

I was so glad when I heard that good ole Coop had a new cd out. While this may not be his best album, and probably no Alice fan will ever think he will ever top his classics anyway, this is a good disc. For a guy who's been in the biz as long as he has and to still be going strong is quite a feat in itself. There are only a couple of what I would consider weak songs on the disc, but there are a couple of real good fun ones here. "Perfect" is a great song with Alice's voice in great form even after all these years. He almost sounds a little like John Lennon on this one. "You Make Me Wanna" may be a little bit goofy in the lyrics department for a guy his age, but is still catchy and fun to listen to. "Dirty Diamonds" the title track, is a killer track with a hook that makes me think of classic Batman. That may not sound too flattering but trust me; it is. "The Saga Of Jesse Jane" is a funny one about a cross-dressing trucker with a bit of a countryish feel. That song I liked before I actually read the lyrics and then busted out laughing once I actually paid attention to them. For me, the music always comes first and then I'll indulge in the lyrical content, because really, lyrics can be great, but if u can't stand to listen to the song then it really doesn't matter, does it? "Pretty Ballerina" is a nice little fantasy theme with a melodic base. "Six Hours" and "Zombie Dance" are for me the other stand out songs in the collection while the other songs have their strong or weak points, you be the judge. It's good to hear Alice return to his musical roots a bit more as he did so well on his last cd "The Eyes Of Alice Cooper" another really good Coop cd. Don't listen to anyone claiming to be a true Alice fan and saying this disc sucks, because it doesn't. And while I don't agree with other reviewers about how this is his best effort in the past few years, "Eyes" does it for me, "Diamonds" is for sure a good one and worth having. The only bad thing is that Alice doesn't seem to get the promotion any of his records deserve and I'm not sure if he is gaining any newer fan base because of this. I never see a video or much of a mention when he releases a new record or even airplay which he could have and should have. But as long as he keeps turning out music for the fan base he has, then it's all good.

Good but not good enough for Alice.......2005-07-19

This is another trash/zipper catches skin type of album. Lots of catchy songs but nothing you'd want show off to your friends out of the collection. This album is a lot more mellow than the previous (Eyes of Alice Cooper) and seems to focus on just catchy tunes and funny songs. Alice took it heavy in 2000 with Brutal Planet and he should have continued to pursue his dark themes. The eyes was alright but compared to the Alice hardcore fans love this album sucks. Get it to add to your collection and play it occasionally so it doesn't wear out and maybe it will be more appreciated in the future.

A Return to Days of the Old.......2005-07-13

There are few artists in the history of rock that have consistently put out more solid albums than Cooper. While some people seem to think his best days were in the 70's, I beg to differ. 1994's The Last Temptation and 2000's Brutal Planet proved that the Coop could still outrock anyone.

In 2003, Cooper decided to attempt to go back to a garage old school sound with The Eyes of Alice Cooper. However, the album, while having its moments failed to really impress me. There were a couple of great tunes but as a whole the "return to old school" didn't work for me.

However, the Coop decided he was on the right track and recently released "Dirty Diamonds." The actual US release date is August 2nd, but being the lucky man that I am I was able to get my hands on a promo copy. Don't worry I will still buy the album when it comes out!

Dirty Diamonds is superior to the Eyes in every way. The lyrics are hilarious especially on tracks like "The Saga of Jessie Jane and Run Down The Devil." The music invokes a variety of styles and does indeed sound like a 70's album with a few elements of the early 80's period of ALice thrown in as well. This is a fun album to listen to with catchy lyrics and great guitar work.

It isn't his heaviest sounding album but Alice hasn't written catchy tunes like this in years. I cannot get it out of my CD player.

If you are a fan of old school Alice you will love this album. If you like his more modern sounding stuff like Brutal Planet or Dragontown this one will not appeal to you as much

With a stellar line-up that features OCTET, LB, MOCKY, GRACE JONES, LARRY LEVAN, AKUFEN, HUMAN LEAGUE, JOHN CARPTENER, SIMIAN, and many more, how can you go wrong? D*I*R*T*Y SOUNDSYSTEM is all about good taste and eclecticism - this is one of the BEST compilations of its kind because it does what few achieve: deliver sounds you've never heard before, in a context you've never imagined, and an impulse to search out MORE music by the featured artists - what more could you ask for? Volumes 2 &3 ain't bad either!

About Dirty.......2004-08-02

It's hard to say exactly what and who is Dirty, but for sure it's much more than the description above says. Dirty is like a cover band on acid, an archive of genetically mutated music and a DJ with Attention Deficit Disorder, all at once. This Dirty Diamonds album that you're checking out here is just the tip of the iceberg that makes up the Dirty Sounds System. Basically, it's a mind bogglingly eclectic collection of originals, remixes, and/or remakes of songs and instrumental tracks, both well known and obscure, produced anytime between the 1960s to present. The sound ranges from simple and beautiful melodies to bizarre and dissonant electronic noises. It's all assembled, possibly modified and then served to you by one guy (or is it a group? I don't know), who is like... a DJ. But it's not the kind of DJ that spins in your local bar, with his permanent collection of 30 records that you've heard a million times; this DJ is more like a librarian, or an art director, or maybe like a juke box with emotional sensibility and good taste. See, but this still is not enough to convey to you the kind of listening experience we're talking about here. For me at least, this music and the way it is assembled, sparks such a diversity of associations and emotional responses on many levels, that it cannot be explained or summed up in text. You have to experience it yourself. The amazing thing is that you can go to the Dirty website (www.d-i-r-t-y.com), where you'll find over 20 Dirty mixes, each mix over an hour long, which you can stream for free(!) and get a good thorough understanding of what Dirty is about (note: there are also close to 100 other mixes by other people on this site which are also pretty good, but first check out the "Dirty Sound System" mixes). Then you should come back and buy this CD, because Dirty deserves it.
