Great driving music.......2007-07-22

Polaris are Just Miracle Legion, yes. But this Polaris album is so beautiful and simple that it goes back to The Backyard release by Miracle Legion.

Even if you don't like the music, most people will agree that Mark's voice and guitar tones are stellar.

I think this is a real fun, eccentric record.

Songs to get stuck in your head for days..........2006-03-02

Any true fan of The Adventures of Pete and Pete knows how much the music of Polaris contributed to the excellence of the show. "She is Staggering" is indescribably beautiful and perfect, one of my favorite songs of all time. Everyone who loves the show needs to have this CD, but even people who have never heard of Pete and Pete would enjoy it as well. It's simply very good music.

ive looked at buying this cd for years...and recently i was givin season one of pete and pete on dvd and this prompted me to say aw heck lets get the cd...and ive been kicking myself now for not doin it years ago...the cd is so solid...not only does it tie into the series in such a key manor but the songs are some of the best ive heard in a few years...and with all the crap thats comin out in music these days it really nice to hear an album that is this good...even tho polaris only existed for pete and pete...this cd sits in my all time top 5 and it will damn hard to get it outta there...

Nice Compilation.......2002-12-30

This band had always impressed me with their catchy and melodic synth pop. Though it seems they didn't take themselves too seriously (in some of their video clips, check Funkytown), good for artists to have a sense of humour.

Many songs on this compilation are from the 1985 album Love an adventure, my favourites would include Don't Go, Listening, A beat for you.(I also liked I will be you, which is not on this compilation). Over tomorrow is a nice song from Race which is included as the last track.

This is a good compilation with a wide variety of songs spanning the bands career, which has recently re-activated after a decade away with Teleporter,a 2 disc set.

For those of you who haven't heard Race from 1988, it's definitely a keeper, its probably hard to get, but if you can, its worth it. If I lost my copy I'd want to get a new one. This is when the band made a stylistic change from synth pop to guitar. Hard rock ruled the airwaves in the mid-late 80s, with bands like Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, and Whitesnake. It seems like Pseudo Echo wanted to just pick up the guitar and Rock. A few tracks from Race are included on this compilation.

The first 4 tracks of Race are great. `Fooled Again, Over tomorrow, Caught and Imagination'. `Over tomorrow'(included here) reminds me of Van Halen's `Dreams', but has its own legs as a song. `Caught' has this gorgeous keyboard melody with some meaty guitar hooks and great drums fills, however its left off this compilation. Isn't that always the case with compilations, they don't include every song you like. Some people don't like the hard rock style, but hey in the mid-late eighties, thats what was hot.

Try and find 1985s Love an adventure also,if you are a synth pop fan of the era, its 80s but had that crispness and spark to it. However this compilation is a good intro/taster to Pseudo Echo.

Avoids cheese, did you say?.......2000-05-14

I'm sorry, did I read a comment here that describes Pseudo Echo as having "[avoided] cheese"?

As far as I know, Pseudo Echo is nothing _but_ cheese. Yes, enjoyable cheese, in a retro-camp sort of way, but cheese nonetheless. And I'm still awaiting the reissue of their debut album "Autumnal Park" (or simply "Pseudo Echo," here in the US), which is the most enjoyable of their three albums. It's quite faithful to, and almost singularly representative of, the wiry new-wave synthesized stuff of the early to mid-eighties, which, at this point, is more dated than any music from any other era; the kind of music that evokes visions of pink mohawk spikes, subway graffiti, and leather jackets on girls. Sadly, Pseudo Echo's two latter albums are complete garbage, particularly "Race," which is one of the worst albums of the '80s (in which the band infamously apes Van Halen in the worst way).

A Synth pop must.......1999-03-01

This cd is a true ride through synth pop love land,Pseudo echo were ahead of their time with Pure synth pop anthems void of any cheese ( well untill funky town) The first half of this cd is brillant. The last half could have been left off, no need to bring those out of the closet

Well. From this CD I only bless 1, 4, 5. If you want to be mystified further and are tonaly adventurous, find this and listen: Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares.


Pay especial attention to word Mystere. Yes it means the same thing in French as in English.


Anything from Cesaria. From Merita... She is Albanian, is very hard to find her best recordings, but who finds it is for a great surprise.

Chava? Yiddish Songs. Unglaublich!!!

You are almost done with World Music Quins.

Here is one, that even though has only One Great CD, but she is in the same league.

If u love rai, you'll probably hate this..........2002-12-04

I was really excited when I found this CD beacuse it is sung in berber language, however Djur's voice is really high, childlike, almost falsetto and is not to my taste. It sounds like a cross between Venetian choir boys and the Bee Gees..i can't really articulate it, but my mother and i have never heard anything like it in our lives. Having said that her voice is very sweet but it's not a sound that appeals to me. I was expecting typical Maghreb sounds, good rhythms, hand-clapping,wailing...but appart from a brief burst of ululating on the 2nd track (I think it was the 2nd) it did nothing for me. Me, I am a die-hard rai fan and also listen to lots of arabic "pop" music, shaabi sounds etc so for those with similar tastes, I'd say stick with Khaled. This album sounded like nothing I've ever heard in North Africa and if your looking for the traditional sounds, this album is not it.

Algerian Music in Another Light.......2002-10-15

Surely you've heard Algerian music sometime in your life. Rai singers like Khaled, Cheb Mami and so forth are well known even in the States, thanks in part to Sting's "Desert Rose". But there is far more to Algerian music than Rai and other Arabic traditions. The Berbers, the original inhabitants of North Africa, still struggle for recognition and identity in their homelands, and while their music is not as well known as Rai, Berber music is no less moving than other forms of music. Djur Djura remains one of my favorite Berber musicians, and this CD is an excellent survey of her works. The subtle but lively music hints at joy, life and laughter and her voice is so seductive. Astute listeners will undoubtably notice similarities with Rai, but many differences as well. Even if you cannot speak Amazight, the lyrics are moving and alluring. This CD always makes me feel good, and is pretty dancey too.

fascinating mixture of influences.......2001-09-25

This CD is a real melange of styles and influences. Certainly the Algerian and Berber background of Djura are evident, as are French influences as they have filtered into Algerian music (the French were long-time colonizers of Algeria, and fought a bloody war against Algerian independence) as well as the influence on Djura directly from her years living in France. Oddly, though, there are also other disparate influences here that can't overtly be accounted for--there are often harmonies and arrangements that are reminiscent of the famous Bulgarian women's choirs. In addition, there are many moments that sound Celtic in nature. Fascinating stuff (except for the 2nd song, which is just awful and sounds like Jon Anderson's solo work at its very worst).

Reading in the liner notes of this Islamic woman's terrible struggles in Algeria and France, it is amazing that she produces songs that are so uplifting. She sings with a high, pure, clear voice, and often multitracks it to great effect. Given recent events in America, US politicians should be required to read her story before they speak of collateral damage in carpet bombing Islamic countries. Her story gives great credence to the title of a certain John Lennon song.....

Moving Music.......2001-08-14

From Ad Cethent Tulas (The Young Girls are Going to Dance) to Tahuzzut (Lullaby), it's hard to not be moved by this music. Even without understanding the language, Djur Djura's expressive voice is captivating. Still want to know what she's singing about? Don't fret, the CD booklet also includes English lyrics. It also contains a short biography of the artist.

Overall, the music has a cinematic-like quality. Each song on the CD conjures up images in your mind. From the first track on, you almost forget you are listening to your stereo. You feel like you are walking through a northern African village where people are dancing and singing folk songs. It's a journey that you will want to experience over and over again.

Not the Eighties.......2000-01-08

My husband bought this one for me by accident. I've been going on and on about how my original tape of Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five was stolen when I was in high school and I've yet to find the album with the original "The MEssage" and "White Lines." I think he bought me this so I'd stop singing to myself, "Don't push me cuz I'm close to the edge," wherever we go. Although this didn't have the two songs I wanted (I later ordered the regular "Greatest Hits" album from Amazon.com), it didn't bring back any memories. In fact, I've never heard any of these songs. I don't mind the CD but it's taking some getting used to.

This cd is so great!!! I would buy it again, except I already have. I encourage young people of all ages and races to buy this "neato" compact disk and play it in your stereo system....(but play it quiet 'cause it has bad language, you know, explicit lyrics???) My favorite part is when Grandmaster goes, "da na na na na na na na...GI Joe was swimmin on the water...bluuuuppp...and then a big brown shark came!!!!!!! bluuuuppppp. Limp Bizkit rules!!!!!

Not what I expected.......2000-09-30

This compilation does not contain titles of real hit movies. It contains mostly sentimental or comic songs from old movies and even from the ones I managed to recognise only a handful were original. It struck me hard to find "Enae Volare" from "Les Visiteurs", the only title I ordered this compilation for, terribly altered but that might concern me alone. Finding "What a Feeling" from "Flashdance" similarly altered made me wonder... later, on the back of the box, I found a small note saying, as I could decrypt from French, that the songs in the album were not necessary original. I should've been warned about this in advance!
