5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Can't say enough good things........2007-01-12

I've played this album over and over again and doubt I'll ever tire of it. Sandra McCracken's songs almost demand repeated listenings just so you can think a bit more on her somewhat abstract and very poetic lyrics. Among my favorites are Portadown Station, Broken Cup, Shelter (for a really great acoustic version of this song, check out Sandra's myspace page!), and Chattanooga. Her songs have such profound insight, and her voice, with an almost brittle beauty, just destroys me.

I can't say enough good things!

4 out of 5 stars A songwriter's songwriter gets great support from husband Derek Webb and company.......2006-10-19

One person reviewing Gravity / Love called Sandra McCracken a songwriter's songwriter. I think I understand what he meant. If husband Derek Webb's songs tend toward the pointed or prophetic, Sandra's are equally strong in originality and artistry. Her songwriting is what you would hope for from a Christian artist: creative, intelligent and free of cliches. Her writing is comparable to that of Sara Groves.

Whereas Derek is more direct and overtly Christian, Sandra is more poetic and subtle. One has to stop and think about what she is saying to fully grasp the meaning in the lyrics. She shares an ability with her husband of being able to bring a fresh perspective to such common themes as our relationship to God and our life in this world.

The music is a combination of folk, pop and light rock. There's even a slight country sound on "Longway Home," with its pedal steel guitar. The band, which includes Derek, is excellent. Derek's subtle background vocals provide wonderful harmony. There's a nice mix between piano ballads like "Portadown Station" and "All The Miles" and the more up-tempo tracks like "Gravity."

One of the pleasant surprises is "Goodbye George," the only song not written by Sandra. The opening acoustic guitar sounds a lot like "Here Comes the Sun" by George Harrison, and once you hear the vocals, you realize that it's no accident. This is a beautiful tribute and goodbye to Harrison that draws on phrases and thoughts from his life.

"Broken Cup" with its an infectious melody and lyrics that point to the inadequacy of things would be right at home on one of her husband's recordings. "Chattanooga" is a great, turn-up-the-volume road song.

These thoughtful, poetic muses are woven with a rich tapestry of sound. Sandra and Derek make a great team, and Derek certainly helps make her shine. But the spotlight is on Sandra, and she shows that she is more than adequate to stand in it. Aspiring songwriters or those seeking to improve their craft can listen and learn. Maybe that's what it means to be a songwriter's songwriter.

    5 out of 5 stars gravity lovely.......2006-10-06

Sandra McCracken's record, Gravity | Love puts on a clinic about the beauty of language. It does not use any out of this world images to create interest or feeling. It does not rely on ambient musical arrangements to pull you in. It uses very real, honest, everyday images to reveal heartache, struggle, love, joy.

While Sandra's use of lyric is as strong as ever, this record is strong on all points. Arrangements are rootsy and very real and Sandra's vocal has never sounded better. The album flows extremely well, with its climax found in the song Portadown Station. This particular one pulls you gently into its grasp with the simple piano & strings arrangement and finally releases you from its clutches so you can sigh. I've listened to this song several times, and I have yet to finish without being fully engaged emotionally. A song-writer has achieved something when you transported into another world with the use of simple music and rather simple lyrics. You will get the same feeling from the track All The Miles.

Listening to this song alone makes it worth the price of the whole album. Sandra has a way with words that removes all surprise that her husband's writing has gotten consistently better and better. Gravity | Love is a collision of emotion and is a demonstration why Sandra used to be known as Nashville's "best kept secret." While no longer a secret, she's definitely one of the best. You will not regret your purchase.

    5 out of 5 stars Blackhawk's Masterpiece!.......2006-06-14

It's very hard to categorize this CD in a single genre. But sometimes that makes for a better album... That is the case here. When I first put this CD in, I was already a big Blackhawk fan. So I was biast. Be a fan or not, I didnt think it was as good as the first two dics. But naturally, after a few listens, I got more into it... and out of it. First off, the songwriting on this one is absolutely top notch! Some of the best, some unknowns at the time, and even a youger Phil Vassar pens a song for this one. (Could be his best.)
The CD starts with Love and Gravity. A middle of the road, Country-Rocker. Typical of Blackhawk. The vocal harmonys are tight as ever, and the CD starts with a bang. Next is Stepping Stones. This is one of the songs that took me longer to say I really liked. However, that time to grow in my ears, made it grow on me huge. Its another mid-tempo song. Another song that I could see the Outlaws playing back when Henry sang for them too. Track three is the first heart-wrencher on the CD. Oh my! This song is about a man who gets a letter from the girl who left him. The envelope has Birmingham in the Postmark, but no return address. It tells the story from his point of view as he wonders if she stayed in Alabama, or if she moved on to somewhere else. Hinting little that he wants the relationship back, and a lot that he just wants to konw where she ended up, and why. A beautiful song.
To pick up the pace and turn the volume up some, The boys belt out a modern Heart classic, Will you be There in the Morning? This one finds the guys rocking more that any other song on the album so far, and the vocals from all three of them are higher and tighter.
It Aint About Love Anymore, is another mid-tempo song. Obviously about a relationship that is still there, but has lost its meaning. I see it as the couple being willing to get back the magic, as it comes to a head that it has been lost.
Nobody's Fool is a little mellower, but not any slower, song about not wanting to be alone. "I'd rather be somebody's fool, than nobody's fool at all." And then we move on to If That Was a Lie. This song is sung by the man who I believe was the heart and the driving force behind this band, up until he lost his battle with cancer. Van Stephenson. This is a temder, country-rock Power ballad. Van's vocals are great, and the guitars make you want to pump you fist while you wipe the tears from you eye's. My favorite song on the album by far!
Hole in My Heart was the first single off this CD, and a farely big hit for the band. Its an up-tempo poppy song about a man who wants a woman real bad, but doesnt want the problems that go with having a hot, high maitnence girl. After that, a return to the beginning of the CD, in that the song Hold Me Harmless is another mid-tempo country style rock/pop song. Its one of those, Just one more time, or just for one night kinda songs. Hold me, It'll be harmless. She Dances with Her Shadow is a slow ballad, worthy of play on a light rock station, but with a 3-way harmony that can not be matched. The disc ends with the song Lonely Boy. This one starts of with a nice little banjo intro, the moves on to the piano, which kicks an a sad, but rockin' song about a young boy's life, growing up not being noticed as much as he might have been if he understood the world and his family a little bit better. A good way to end a great CD.
Blackhawk did not deliver a better CD when Van was alive. This was his best CD as a recording artist, weather with a band, or solo. And he had some great ones. If you like Blackhawk at all, you should love this CD. I even have a few friends who dont like country, that like this one.
Once you buy this, and fall in love with it, you need to get the CD Spirit Dancer. Its the first album the boys did without Van, and it is more/less a tribute to there fallen brother. If you were a fan before, it will be a tear-jerker. Even the loud, rockin' songs.
    Buy, listen, enjoy, love!

4 out of 5 stars Highly ignored album by this band....WHY ???.......2003-03-05

The last effort by this band, "Strong Enough" wasn't what it's title said. Here, the band lifts its head up high and challenges themselves more, creating a rock-fused country album that won't disapoint their fans.

The best tracks, being the mountain "Postmarked Birmingham", or the title track, you'll wanna keep turning to these tracks again and again. Also, a great new version of the 70's classic, "Lonely Boy".

5 out of 5 stars Love and Gravity Best of the Four.......2001-03-08

I purchased this Cd last, after aquirring 1, 2, and 4. And without a doubt this is the bands finest, and strongest offering. I find myself constantly pulled back to this CD, the structure and flow is excellent. Van Stephensons "If That Was A Lie" is heart wrenching, and very moving, why he isn't utlized more is beyond me, and considering what has happened to him, its kind of a shame. Everyone should be aware of what a great talent he was, he wrote alot for Restless Heart early on, and Henry Paul too, fronted the Outlaws in their infancy, and was responsible for quite a few of their hits.

5 out of 5 stars The Showcase of Talent.......2000-06-29

When an album like this comes along, you just gotta grab it. Tremendously talented songwriters Henry Paul, Dave Robbins, and Van Stephenson and even road-man/lead guitarist Dale Oliver take turns penning tunes on this record. The title track "Love and Gravity" is reminicent of the band's debut single "Goodbye Says It All." "She Dances With Her Shadow" is just beautiful, and "Postmarked Birmingham" by all rights should have been a #1 smash. If you love music for music's sake, don't miss this album!

5 out of 5 stars Does not dissapoint!.......2000-03-15

This album was a strong, emotional, but more upbeat answer to Strong Enough. Their classic harmonizing is as good as ever, and we get to hear a poignant song from non-lead singer Van Stephenson. If you are pondering a possible first Blackhawk CD purchase, this one will definitely not dissapoint!

I bought this CD for a song called "She". I had heard it in episodes of TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dawson's Creek, and I loved it. It was mellow, had a good beat and contained some great chord progressions that created a wistful atmosphere. The whole CD is terrific. There are some upbeat tunes like "Cold to the Touch", and some sexy, bluesy tunes like "Simone". Many of the songs have those addicting R&B drum beats and jazzy bass lines. It's completely worth a listen!

Why did I love this song sooo much?I don't know,I just did.Certain songs just get under my skin and Gravity Of Love is one of those songs. The lady who does the lead vocals for this wonderful song has a really beautiful voice.I liked the Judgement Day Club Mix of the song but I loved the radio version way better.

2 out of 5 stars i personally ADORE this stuff.......2001-08-23

I really love this song!! Awesome! A real experience.. If carmina wasn't there, it'd simply be PERFECT... Now you will be wandering why i rate it with only 2 stars. Well.. there are many "but"s here...

So, we have ethereal sweet and sexy vocals, perfect romantic, charming and most importantly *human* lyrics and of course very good atmospheric rhythms. A really rare combination that can make you travel as far away as one can travel simply by hearing a song. It can make you cry, it can make you dream...

But, but, but, why carmina burana? why, why carmina burana???:( There were a **million** ways to complete this inspiration without getting "another man's work". And i believe that half of them wouldn't spoil it. It would still be perfect and original too... (ok i may be a little bit extreme here about the numbers.. but i think you get the meaning).

So much near absolute perfection, but unfortunatelly it is still another "based on carmina burana" song, call it version 249309420. And, in this cd, we can just find remixes of the 249309420th "carmina burana based" song... sadly:(

If you haven't heard the track in the "screen behind the mirror" album, then you simply HAVE to hear it. Although it is not 100% original, it is still a very very beautiful and charming song. Very charming indeed. However, the remixes are quite predictable. Nothing really special. A very good combination of incredients resulting in "simply very good" food. But the truth is, that with such stuff we could have a much better result.

I can't say it does not worth to buy it.It would be wrong. But i would hardly rate it with more than 3 stars. We simply have some -predictable- remixes in a very good but -not original- song.

So... i love it? yes! i'd buy it? yes! but only because i am an enigma fun and i'd buy all of their stuff no matter what...

This excellent song gave a warning of what would be E4; and I can say that this song did not defraud.

The "Radio Edit", is very similar to the version of the disc. The "Judgement Day Club Mix", (my favourite), has an excellent beat and incredible force and the "Vocal Dark Club Mix", is also excellent.

If you not yet have E4 and you wishes to know about it, I recommend this disc and if you already own E4, this import single is a great aggregate to so beautiful collection.

      Greetings.

4 out of 5 stars 'Gravity' is Powerful.......2000-05-09

Energy. It just leaps out of this song like a tiger attacking... That's what makes it so good. The Carmina Burana sample isn't overpowering, Ruth-Ann's vocals convey just the right sense of urgency... this is definitely the best song from 'The Screen Behind the Mirror'. My only complaint is the remixes. The 'T.N.T. for the Brain' single had an alternate version of the song that I feel would have been worthy on the album... but the remixes for 'GoL' are simply dance remixes (an error made on Enigma's 'Push the Limits' single). They're good, and worth buying the single for, but would never be worthy for placement on an Enigma album.

        3 out of 5 stars Lo-fi art-core.......2001-10-11

Having read numerous reviews and articles pertaining to this band, i really wanted to enjoy this album. I will openly admit it is right up my alley: screaming, chaotic artsy punk with messed up/poetic lyrics and the like. However, it is almost too chaotic. And the production quality is somewhat mediocre. Given better production this album would be really amazing! It is still a great document of the art-punk genre though and a must have for your hardcore collection.

5 out of 5 stars My mom loves it.......2000-01-28

I know the vocalist of this band. He is a great kid. The stuff on the album is groundbreaking. Opening a door to the new age. If you don't have this album, do yourself a favor and get it. I recommend to get all of them and listen to repeatedly. Anyone who calls it emo-core is full of it. This album is pure, romantic, love.

5 out of 5 stars if you need to read this review, you dont know good music.......1999-02-09

i remember the days back in old san diego when you could go see this amazing california band (featuring ex-members of heroin) freak out and throw themselves all around the stage. the music is fast, very fast. screaming vocals over keyboards, guitar, bass and some extremely fast off time drum beats. a must have for any fans of the locust, swing kids, clikatat ikatowi, the vss, angel hair, etc. if you like this check out other releases on gravity records and gsl records. ex-members now in tarot bolero and get hustle

5 out of 5 stars frenetic, energizing emo-core.......1998-08-24

This album is easily in my top ten favorites of all time. Antioch Arrow's sound is wholly unique- chaotic, precise, and heart-wrenching all at the same time. This is emo at its finest, with a bit of math-rock thrown in. If you have never listened to the type of bands found on Gravity Records, like Angel Hair, John Henry West, the VSS, etc., this may not be for you. If you love crazy emo-core, this is right up your alley.
