Even Better Than Volume One.......2005-03-06
"Encore" features pretty much every significant hit not featured on the first volume, from the soulful "The Motown Song" to the turbo charged rocker "Lost In You" to the new wave synth pop chugger "Baby Jane" to the somber " I Was Only Joking", you will find that you will love every song on this cd (even the much criticized "Love Touch" (which is one of my all time favorites). This set is also notable for inckuding Rod's popular on radio but otherwise hard to find cover of Carole King's "So Far Away" and "Don't Come Around Here" from 2001's "Human". Plus, anyone who's only familliar with Sheryl Crow's version of "The First Cut Is The Deepest" should really listen to Rod's version. It's truly better.
An added bonus to this disc is a booklet with commentary on each track and how it came into being, given to to you by none other than Rod. A great collection of Rod's music. Get this one as well as volume one.
Better than Volume 1 or that Greatest Hits! .......2005-01-10
More Classics From Rock's Spanner In The Works.......2004-11-02
This cd includes most of those remaining hits, including "Love Touch" (don't tell me anything bad about this song, because I love it), "Crazy About Her", "Passion", and the uplifting "The Motown Song". Also included is a vast number of underrated songs like "Broken Arrow", his original version "That's What Friends Are For" (not as good as Dionne Warwick's version, but it's still good), "I Don't Want To Talk About It", and "I Was Only Joking". Fans may miss "Handbags And Gladrags" and "The Killing Of Georgie Pts. 1 and 2", but that's a matter of opinion.
Get this and "Voice", and you're well on your way to owning all of Rod Stewart's best cds. Also pick up "Gasoline Alley", "Every Picture Tells A Story", "Out Of Order" and "Vagabond Heart", all great albums. Oh yeah, and the 3 "Great American Songbook" cds. They show how versatile the Rodmeister really is.

Eminem's fourth album offers few surprises, but still enough pleasures to carry the day. As evinced by Em's pre-election, pro-voting "Mosh," this is not exactly the same Eminem who seemingly crapped on anything and everything. Encore finds a surprisingly mature Eminem waxing reflective about his battle with Benzino ("Like Toy Soldiers") rather than unloading both barrels. However, it's not all elder statesmanship: "Puke" goes after his ex-wife Kim with incredible scorn, and "Big Weenie" showcases the familiar juvenile humor that made him famous. If Encore has a clear weakness, it's the bland production--the same plodding sound that he and Dr. Dre cooked up on the previous three albums. The exotic flavor of "Ass Like That" catches the ear, but many others run off the same monotonous minor-key melodies and tempos. Of course, people buy Eminem albums to hear him spit first and foremost, and in that regard few fans will be disappointed by Encore; it'd just be nice to see him switch up his sound at some point. --Oliver WangAlbum Description
"ENCORE" is multi-platinum recording artist EMINEM's first full album of new material since 2002's "THE EMINEM SHOW," which spawned the hit singles "Without Me" and "Cleanin' Out My Closet." He followed up in November 2002 with Music From And Inspired By The Motion Picture `8 Mile', which featured the Academy Award winning song "Lose Yourself" and sold almost 9 million copies worldwide. Earlier this year, Eminem's group D-12 released D-12 World (global sales over 3 million) and scored hits with "My Band" and "How Come".ENCORE, Executive Produced by DR. Eminem gets stranger than usual........2007-07-04
Bonus disc : 4 stars
Eminem has always been an acquired taste. He always aims to offend and usually he is successful and writes one damn good song at the same time. But this was the first album that he fell short on one of these tasks. And it's the wrong one to be unsuccessful with, most of the songs and beats are forgettable and not up to Eminem's high standards. Maybe it was cause the five years before he had released three albums that were ground breaking plus a very good D12 album. Or maybe he was working on his label and becoming a business man. Or maybe he was just burnt out on the celebrity game (when a chump like Ja Rule is trying to play you there's got to be a point when you say, "Why do I even have to write this battle track for this fool?").
Whatever the reason, Encore seems distracted. Not that there aren't some hot tracks. Never Enough is probably the standout on the album. You can blast this in the car but beware cuz you might be doing 80 before you even realize it.
What it comes down to is, for an Eminem fan this is essential but for a fair weather fan you might want to pick up something else. Or for someone who just picked up Chronic 2001 and wants to hear some Eminem songs that weren't played out on MTV, this ain't the place. Pick up Marshall Mathers LP or Slim Shady LP.
If you are a hardcore fan, make sure you pick up the two disc. The three tracks on the bonus disc are better than the entire album. They're remarkably similar to MM LP or When I'm Gone from Curtain Call.
Cool songs . . .
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Mockingbird, Like Toy Soldiers, One Shot 2 Shot, We As Americans, Love You More, Ricky Ticky Tock, and of course, Never Enough.
Eminem's Nemisis.......2007-04-07
1. The beats suck. The only songs that have a decent beat are Like Toy Soldiers and Mosh. And the only reason Like Toy Soldiers became popular is because of the catchy chorus which is just a sample of an old song called Toy Soldiers by Martika. Apart from those two songs, the beats on the other songs are pretty lame. I mean, in Rain Man, the beat consists of just 3 chords.
2. He ran out of things to say. This is what made his downfall so inevitable. If you look through his previous 3 albums, most of his songs have one of the following six song meanings:
- My mother is a b***h and I am going to kill her.
- My ex-girlfriend, Kim, is a b***h and I am going to kill her.
- I have an alter-ego called Slim Shady and he is a psychopath who doesn't care what people think of him.
- Woe is me for I am being persecuted by the media (even though this is the sort of reaction I wanted from them when I wrote the controversial lyrics because the controversy gives me free publicity and makes my young fans feel that they are rebelling against their parents and authority when they buy my albums, increasing my records sales and making me even richer, plus giving me something else to whine about).
- Radio friendly single with humourous lyrics that take shots at celebrities that I release for each album debut to gain radioplay and appeal to stupid pop fans with a short attention span (My Name Is, The Real Slim Shady, Without Me and Just Lose It).
- I have a daughter.
Eminem has been milking those 6 themes for his whole career. Yes, I am aware that he does have songs that do not fit into those six categories (eg. Stan, Mosh, Guilty Conscience). But the majority of his songs do. All his previous albums revolve around these themes. It was inevitable that he would eventually run out of things to say. I mean, how many times could he rap about killing his mother, killing his ex-girlfriend and Slim Shady before people lost interest? His first 3 albums had completely milked those themes for what they're worth, and due to his inability to think of anything else, he just ends up writing a bunch of silly, immature, incoherent lyrics with no meaning whatsoever. He seems to be more interested in immitating bodily noises than actually writing some decent lyrics. On top of that, his radio-friendly single (Just Lose It), as well as being about the same subject as all the other ones, sucked musically as well as lyrically. How brave of Eminem to do what every other celebrity and comedian has done in the past few years (make fun of Michael Jackson). There's a reason why Eminem quit after this album. And don't believe him when he says it's because he's sick of the fame, it's because he's run out of things to write about.
This is the sad legacy of Eminem. An artist whose lyrics revolve so much around present events, particularly what is currently happening in his life, that they quickly become irrelevant within a few years. I mean, who cares about his criticism of Moby and boy bands (Without Me) now that their 15 minutes of fame are up? Who is going to care about his shots at other rappers and Michael Jackson when they are gone from the spotlight? Who still cares about his hatred of his mother and his relationship with Kim? Or how he's moving out of Hollywood (Say Goodbye to Hollywood) or his beef with Murder Inc (Like Toy Soldiers)? These songs become out of date within a mere 2 years after his album is released. The only songs that could possibly be relevant within 10 years are Lose Yourself and Stan.
People say that the Slim Shady LP and the Marshal Mathers LP are some of the best albums ever made, yet how many people still listen to them? I mean, going back and listening to them now, they just sound so bland and dated, and his voice just sounds annoying.
Eminem has no lasting appeal. He was fresh when he first came out, creating a buzz with his unique style and controversial lyrics, but his reliance on a few themes has lead him to a dead end. From the release of his second album, any old monkey could realise that his career would be short-lived. Eminem had potential, but his egocentric lyrics that relied on references to what was popular at the time, made him just another fad with no lasting appeal. Now his 15 minutes of fame are up, his fans have grown up, MTV and pop listeners will move onto the next fad and no one will remember him in 10 years time.

Following up on the release of his debut CD, The Voice, Russell Watson is back with Encore, another mix of opera favorites and popular songs. By now Watson has become virtually a household name--he sells out large concert venues and remains on the top-seller charts. On Encore, we find Puccini and Verdi sharing the billing with Lulu and Lionel Ritchie on the CD's 16 tracks, which range from the much-loved Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria" to "Where My Heart Will Take Me," the theme for Enterprise (the latest Star Trek TV series). Indeed, a more fitting title might have been The Voices, since Watson explores opera, sacred works, film, television themes, and pop songs. The orchestral arrangements on tracks such as "Va, Pensiero" may not win him any fans from the opera contingency, but Watson reveals a captivating sound on pop ballads, including "You Are So Beautiful" and "Somewhere." If you enjoyed The Voice, you're certain to want an encore. --Rebecca AgnewCustomer Reviews:

EMINEM INFINITE (1996)
Eminem ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD Similar Items:
ASIN: B000N0SYZU |
Product Description
Infinite represents Eminem the way he was in his younger years: a young man in search of true love as the song « Searchin» fully reveals it. A young man facing a lot of financial problems and trying to feed his family. When you have been yourself through similar difficulties, you will be able to relate to songs like « Its ok ». 313 gives us the taste of a « sweet emcee from the 313 ». « Maxine » also belongs to the well written songs of the album. Marshalls sincerity all over Infinite is so touching. But it seems that it wasnt enough. Despite the huge efforts, he had put into his album, people reproached him to sound like Nas. The public wanted something else, something biting that Eminem gave them with the Slim Shady EP and the Slim Shady LP. Although people wont unanimously agree on Infinite, Id advice any true Eminem fan to check the album if he hasnt done it yet- at least for the great lyrics written by Marshall Mathers.Customer Reviews:

The Essence of Hip-Hop - - D-E-S-E-R-V-E-S E-V-E-R-Y S-T-A-R.......2007-03-28
That said, the overall vibe of this album has an undeniable old school quality to it, even though it was released in '96. The beats are infectious and sound fresh even to this day, and eminem actually had something to say. He was hungry, relied on clever wordplay and worthwhile stories that not only reflected his life at the time, but also portrayed every day happenings that he had probably grown accustomed to seeing.
"Maxine" is about how a prostitute will lie & leave you with disease if you're dumb enough to believe she's clean. Some nice production here.
"Never 2 Far" portrays eminems ambitions to make money in the rap industry. The difference between him and other rappers is that he comes correct with clever wordplay and flow, and each verse eases nicely into the chorus, to the point where you don't even realize his technique of merging the two.
"Searchin" continues this idea except this time he's pouring out emotions as well as his lust for a lost love. Again undeniably sick wordplay and flow, with a guest appearance from a friend.
"Infinite", perhaps the strongest track on the album is also one of the sickest instances of pure lyrical destruction that i've ever heard. Not a lyric is wasted throughout, and every line effortlessly connects to the next. ("My rhymin' skills got you climbin' hills, i travel through your mind into your spine like siren drills."). This is hip-hop that actually requires thinking to understand everything he's saying, and when you do it's a real eye opener.
"Open Mic" flosses a sick beat and funny intro, and eminem rips the beat to sh*t. It's a toss up between this and "Infinite" for best track on the album. ("You couldn't flip shit playin' in toilets with a spatula.")
"It's Ok" must be heard to believe. His style is so natural you'd think he was somehow cheating. Again the wordplay is unmatched by today's "standards" of what a hip-hop song should entail.
A inevitable gripe with this album that most heads will notice is Eminems questionable approach to riding the beat. At times he certainly seems off if you listen closely, yet he also seems right on because of the way he flows in and out of the chorus, with an uncanny ear for the smallest nuances of the beat.
Bottom line: it's shocking that few people have heard this album. This was undoubtedly a different side of Eminem, when few people knew about him and his rage hadn't come out yet. If you're a hip-hop head you will probably appreciate this album for what it is, Beats, Rhymes and Storytelling ability.
The rhymes absolutely blow my mind on this album........2007-02-26

There's a plethora of single-disc Caruso collections, but this one's the preferred choice for opera fans who treasure this golden- voiced epitome of Golden Age singing. It's a Greatest Hits collection to beat all Greatest Hits collections. Selections span Caruso's career, from the lyric effusions of 1906-7 to the darker-voiced later recordings, including one of his last records, the 1920 La Juive aria, "Rachel, quand du Seigneur," which he invests with a heartbreaking poignancy that hasn't been bettered. Caruso shines brightest in the Italian repertory, capturing the pathos of Vesti la Giubba, the insouciance of the Duke's Rigoletto arias, and the hero's dilemma in Celeste Aida, among much else. But everything here is wonderful--great music, great singing. --Dan DavisCustomer Reviews:

A treasure of the musical world........2007-04-14
The best comment about this album came from my seventeen year old son. Just last year (2006) I finally got a CD copy of this priceless work of art and shared it with him. He listened totally enthralled. The selection "Hamletto, or Prosciuttino (sung in simultaneous Italian and English0" caused him to comment, "Well, now I know what Hamlet is about." He since asked me to get the others and has loved them as well. "Backwards With the Folk Song" brought back memories of Voice Lessons and dreary concerts that now can be enjoyed safely from a distance. Today's indie and emo musicians could do well to listen and learn.
I would recommend Miss Russell's work for any teenaged class, they seem to adore her sly wit. Besides, all the French Horn players in the High School band need a little teasing from time to time.

Oh dear...they've taken their eye off the ball.......2007-01-08
But Shine is pretty much the same ethno-electronica that was pervasive throughout the 90s. Think Deep Forest, Anubian Nights, Enigma, B-Tribe, and even Sting's "Desert Rose". Yawnnnnnnnnnnnn.
Their first album was good mostly because of its orginality (operatic arias are definitely a challenge), but any old fool can slap a "cool" Middle Eastern chant over a modern beat.
What bugs me about both albums is that they don't maintain that singularly operatic quality--it seems to be a sonic delicacy reserved only for a few tracks.
So, with a very few exceptions, this album is a bit contrived.
Stunningly beautiful music.......2004-11-29
I would call this music techno opera scene from the future with beautiful opera singing, just to give you an idea of what this music is like! Also, the singer from the Fifth Element soundtrack, Inva Mula sings the song "Mon Amour".
Also singing on this cd is a singer named Shakila. She sings on "Kokab" and "Khodoya". These three are my favorite tracks. Though the cd in whole is a joy to listen to.
We'll say that "Operatica-Shine" succesfully bridged the Middle East to Europe via southern Spain.
So if you're a nu music dj, pick up this cd, so you can really spin an eclectc mix of music - Savannah Skye aka DJ Dakini-NYC...

Breathtaking Album.......2007-01-26
This is an amazing album, and a must have. The music is wonderful... very gentle, extremely clear, and very sincere. Featured here is a haunting version of "Sambalero" to open up the gentle adventure followed by 10 more incredible tracks. Gentle sax, perfect marriage between his tone and Luiz Bonfa's guitar. The music evokes an image, and the timing and musicianship grabs me every time I listen to this. While I loved every song on this, there were others that are absolute staples to me: "Insensatez", "Samba De Duas Notas", "Menina Flor", "Um Abraco No Getz", and "Ebony Samba".
If you are a bossa nova fan, you will certainly want to get this if you don't already own it. It's stunning. And if you do like this, you also want to check out "Getz/Gilberto", "Jazz Samba", "Getz/Almeida" to name but a few. You may also like music by Bud Shank with Laurindo Almeida.
Another strong bossa nova release from Getz.......2007-01-07
Not only is Bonfa a great songwriter, he is also an accomplished guitarist as he demonstrates on so many of the tracks here. His playing has a crisp and at times urgent feel on the faster numbers. Surprisingly, his most famous composition, Manha De Carnival was not included on the album. Also, Jobim's song Corcovado was present on the original LP as an instrumental, but is omitted from the CD. Instead we get a double take of Ebony Samba, one of the highlights of the album, so all is not lost.
As for the music, as one would expect it is just wonderful. It is rather different in feel and presentation to its purely instrumental predecessor, Jazz Samba, with JSE generally having a lighter and more joyous tone overall, but no less captivating. There is also the presence of Brazilian vocalist Maria Toledo. She tends to use her voice more as an instrument rather than the singing of lyrics. And with a slight echo added this gives an unusual haunting quality to some of these tracks. However, she does get to sing at least a full verse on one or 2 tracks, and one such example is Insensatez, one of the few melancholic songs included. The way this is performed is simply sublime, and worth the money of the CD alone. The great Stan Getz, of course is in excellent form as he was on Jazz Samba, and his sense of timing and use of phrasing is as immaculate as ever.
Although there were no huge hits from this album, unlike the case with Jazz Samba (Desifinado) and Getz/Gilberto (Girl From Ipenema), that does not render Jazz Samba Encore any less substantial as a musical project. If you liked the other two albums mentioned, you should certainly enjoy this one.

Magical Mystery Tour.......2002-11-03
I think Sgt. Peppers; Ziggy Stardust, ............and Jazz Samba Encore! are a must have. Luiz Bonfa's solos takes your heart and Getz fills all the amazing space. Smoke something, fix yourself a drink and
enjoy the Magical Mystery Tour.
