5 out of 5 stars The Last Great Doobie Brothers Album Until The Reunion.......2007-04-16

STAMPEDE was the Doobie Brothers' last great album until they reunited in 1987, partially because it was the last to feature Tom Johnston on a full-time basis until then, and partially because guitar wildman Jeff Baxter joined as a full-time member for this one. There are many great songs here including "Sweet Maxine", "Neal's Fandango", and the excellent cover of the Motown standard "Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me)." It was, despite a lack of big hit singles, yet another Top Ten album for the band. The belief among surviving members, past and present, that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 for drug-smuggling was falsely convicted, as well as their advocacy of increase funding for law enforcement, make STAMPEDE an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars Stampede.......2007-01-10

Had to have it. First on vinyl, then cassette and now CD. My son dumped it onto my Ipod for me. Classic Doobies!

5 out of 5 stars Stampede, The Crescendo album.......2006-09-08

I call it that because this is the last album before the Michael McDonald "invasion"
So many comments are made about the cuts on the album no one knows about and I agree, wholeheartedly. Neal's Fandango with it's driving jam definitely will pump you up and the sweet southern rock sound of "Music Man" reminds me of the order I used to listen to this album on my old 8-track, but to me, the best song was the old Holland-Dozier-Holland song "Take Me in Your Arms." It was this song I heard on the radio so long ago that made me purchase the album. The Doobies tapped into the Motown sound with this hit and with the strings, horns, and background vocals I was completely hooked. One of the few times I have ever purchased an album with one hit. The rest is history. "I Cheat the Hangman" is another example of Patrick Simmons genius with it's haunting chorus and again with the use of the Memphis Horn Section. I still listen to this album regularly as it never seems to grow old which is rare in music today.

1 out of 5 stars GREAT ALBUM, BUT YOU'RE BUYING THE WRONG VERSION!.......2006-07-17

The Japanese imports of the Doobie catalog are remastered.

Warner Brothers here in the U.S. is still selling the old LP-EQ'd, terrible-sounding masters they released on CD in 1990.

If you love these albums, get a set of the Japanese editions. They cost more, but they're worth it.

Here is the link to the Japanese remaster of Stampede.

4 out of 5 stars "I Cheat The Hangman" is a great song, period.......2006-03-13

This was the Doobies forth album and includes some gems for sure. Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons wrote most of the songs presented here and there are some strong tunes. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter provided additional song writing and great guitar work. This was also the last album that featured Johnston as a full timer because he ran into trouble with drugs and the law which derailed his career for a few years. Highlights of this album include: 'Sweet Maxine', 'Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me A Little While)' and the fabulous 'I Cheat The Hangman'. In between there is some great music in the typical Doobie Brothers style. 4.5 stars

As their name implies, this Austin-based trio combines buoyant, blithe Western swing with precise small-band hot jazz. Before all you swingsters grab your dancin' shoes, however, be aware that this Hot Club takes its jazz improvisation quite seriously, delivering thoughtful and fluent licks rather than merely stock 4/4 rhythms. That's not to say you can't dance to it---they generate considerable intensity even without the presence of a drummer. Along the way, they cover an ample amount of Bob Wills (plus a Spade Cooley tune) in addition to traditional fiddle tunes, waltzes, and standards from Gershwin and other old-timers. Guitarist Whit Smith shows talent both as a fleet soloist and a propulsive rhythm man (check out Chinatown, My Chinatown) while Elana Fremerman handles her fiddle breaks with conviction; both offer mild-mannered vocals. Texas fiddle legend Johnny Gimble joins in on four cuts, and steel guitar, piano, and accordion also pop up at various points across this engaging debut. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Hot Club SWINGS in Tulsa.......2006-07-06

My husband and I just saw HOT CLUB perform last night at the 4th of July Festivities in Tulsa. I have to be honest and say I had never heard of them before but they have me looking to buy all their music now. I am a fan of the Bag Boys out of Boston and this Group made me think of them and how much I like that Western Swing. I am a listener of Soft Rock and Oldies but when I hear a great group like this my tastes change easily.

Elana is full of energy and fun to watch. She introduced a couple songs she wrote last night and she should be a STAR of the highest rank. We had a great time and will be watching this Group from now on.

5 out of 5 stars Swinging Stampede.......2006-02-21

I would describe it as excellent- a good composite of Jazz style and C & Western, some of the tunes reminded me of bush dancing we use to attend. Of Elana Fremerman, her fiddle playing is wow.
I first saw her on the DVD This Joint Is Jumping in an interview about Billie Holliday, thats when I realised that she has an incredible likeness to my daughter Melanie. That set my curiousity to find out more, did so via Google. Then decided to purchase one of her CDs. To find out what her music and playing was like, needlessly to say-definetley A1.
Kindest Regards

5 out of 5 stars Direct from Bob Wills' Tiffany Transcriptions Great Great!!!.......2004-01-28

The Hot Club of Cow Town is a great band. Particularly on the initial records, we are seeing straight up Bob Wills music. The sound and most of the selections come from Bob Willis's great Tiffany Transcriptions of the mid 1940s. The Tiffany transcriptions were records made to be played on radio stations (back when radio stations usually did not play regular retail sold records). They were hotter, looser, and with a fuller repertoire than the recordings they were making for Columbia during these years.

The Hot Club picks up this music so well, and in such a lively spirit without being directly imitative that on some selections here I expect to hear Bob Wills, Joe Holley, or Tommy Duncan singing.

Their musical achievement is to do this with a trio. They all were veterans of large real sized Western Swing aggregations in NYC and California and Texas. They were true to life Western Swing bands, but there aren't a lot of venues that are going to pay enough money for a 7, 8. or 9 piece bands to support its members, a factor that helped Rock and Roll get rid of lots of Western Swing, Big Band swing, and R & B groups in the 1950s, a trio or foursome is just cheaper to hire than a mini orchestra.

Being an inspiring wannabe baby steps fiddler, I really in love with Elena's work on all the albums. She takes a lot of her lead from the great Joe Holley's solos and obligatos with Wills in the 40s and when he rejoined the Playboys in the early 1960s. However, Elena gets a bigger richer more musically fluent sound. She stays hot, but puts a lot of bow into her fiddling and is the apparent star of this band.

However, the real greatness here is in the rhythm section. How do they do it? Just a guitarist and bassist. You'd swear there was the usual lineup in Western Swing with a rhythm guitarist playing behind the guitar leads, a drummer, and maybe a rhythm banjo player too and maybe people in a horn or fiddle section playing rhythm riffs when they aren't playing lead. Yet, it is just a bassist and a guitar player. Than rhythm is not merely good as what Wills had during his Tiffany recordings, it is much better. This almost reaches the quality of rhythm reached on the best Western Swing recording in history, the combined work of Eldon Shamblin, Smokey Dacus, and Tommy Allsup on "For the Last Time." That's saying something.
There is a guest appearance of the steel guitar genius Jeremy Wakefield that dazzles.
It is simply about which Hot Club CDs to get. Buy them all! Maybe you might even get one or two extra!
Apart from all the cultural and historicity and analysis this is just sooooo damn good that deaf people would probably love to hear it!

Both of these albums are very good. "To Rock Or Not To Be" is the best of the two. While not as good as "One Vice At A Time" or "Headhunter," it is still one of my favorite hard rock albums ever. The title songs are the best songs here. "To Rock..." is the best song, it has great guitar riffs and a very cool ending (bzzzzz ;-)

    3 out of 5 stars Background music.......2007-05-25

    Here's the short review:

Stampede is less like a stampede and more like like a warm electronic oatmeal bath. The music is fine for background at the edgy cafe, but I kept waiting for Skerik or somebody to start ripping.

If you like Amoeba, you may like Stampede.

If you, as I do, prefer Host and Guest, skip it. There is no Mullet Cut, Critter's Theme, Brozo the Clown, or Communist Frankenstein Government Headset Earphone Radio Monster material on Stampede.

    5 out of 5 stars Seattle-lite.......2006-07-28

This is by far the most listenable album from Critters, but also probably their best.
The band takes on a huge spectrum of sounds making the album an eclectic electronic-acid-rock-funk-jazz whirlwind. Some songs are soft, even emotional, while others have that strong Critters sax+percussion+base. Then there's the last track - all it's missing is George Harrison with a sitar.

    5 out of 5 stars Bridging multiple worlds . . ........2005-04-19

. . . improv, electronica, world, funk, lounge to name a few. And doing a dang good job of it.

I'm pretty much blown away by this disc. Mylab, Tucker Martine/Eyvind Kang (who, not surprisingly, mixes string arrangements on three cuts), Miles Gurtu, Nathan Michel, and Garage a Trois--not to mention Fantomas (esp. Delirium Cordia, without the darkness)--come to mind as possible analogs, but these guys have pretty much staked out their own unique territory. One that gets my juices flowing. Big time.

For one thing, there's a great balance between live sounds and post-production effects. Very cool. One almost gets the feeling that this stuff could be played in concert and come across just about as effectively as on this studio disc, despite the amount of processing and fooling around, which, although it definitely enhances things, doesn't overwhelm.

A lot of that's due to the level of true improv, song writing ability, group conversation, and instrumental mastery these guys have risen to since their debut a decade or so ago. From their humble beginnings as just another jazz thrash band, these fellows have become true innovators. Moreover, they've developed a huge cultural reach embracing everything from surf to bossa thrash without blinking an eye.

A disc of immense pleasure and possibility. One of my favorites so far this year.

5 out of 5 stars you must buy this immediately.......2004-06-28

If you haven't purchased this album for yourself or your friends, do so immediately. If you like your electronica on the funky side, this is the remedy to your ailing ears that have grown weary of the pablum fed to them in the modern world. This album is purposely rough, the 9 or 11 piece band has been recorded and mastered in such a way as to provoke the idea that the recording method was flawed, but then the listener soon realizes that this is a direct result of the intention by senor Will Holland, the madman behind this record. In the same vein is the Limp Twins album, which Mr.Holland's a part of also. You can listen to these two albums at www.tunes.co.uk. Get em.

            3 out of 5 stars unexpected letdown.......2003-07-18

Because I still enjoy the undisputable classic "Apricot Morning," I obviously had high expectations for QSO's "Stampede." The QSO tracks I heard on Tru Thoughts compilations have always been solid tracks with great melodies and momentum. That's why it pains me to write that "Stampede" falls short. Yes, it's got some brilliant (pre-released)tracks, but the rest isn't very inspiring. It's as if QSO sort of filled in the blanks with some new songs to justify a full-length release. It's a telling sign that at Amoeba, San Francisco's all-genre vinyl record-store, copies of "Stampede" are easily available but if you're looking for a vinyl copy of "Apricot Morning" . . well, try Ebay and be willing to eat Top Ramen for a while.
One last thing, and maybe it's more of a reflection of the label than the artist, but the liner notes describe how "Stampede" was inspired by old, dusty 45's of funk and soul from decades past. Nice homage, but then it goes on to somewhat predict that future artists will find the same inspiration in "Stampede." This I found a little presumptious and I hope - as a fan of Quantic and Tru Thoughts Records - that this attitude won't guide future releases.
