Album Description

Jamie Cullum returns to center stage of the jazz crossover world with an incredible new album, Catching Tales. A smorgasbord of jazz standards, pop, swing, and r&b grooves, this is the ultimate Jamie Cullum album. Jamie has collaborated with a range of music svengalis, including Guy Chambers, Dan the Automator (from the Gorillaz and collaborations with DJ Shadow), Salaam Remi, Ed Harcourt, and many more, but he's careful not to forget his roots. His brother Ben has cowritten a number of tracks on this album, as he did on Twentysomething.

Album Description

This Deluxe Limited Edition features 15 tracks plus bonus DVD containing Telling Tales, an exclusive 20 minute behind-the-scenes documentary following Jamie throughout recording and mixing the album, the video shoot and on the road across Europe, including a fabulous interview. 28-page booklet containing exclusive photos, Jamie rarities, extended liner notes plus a track-by-track introduction from Jamie himself! Universal. 2005.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't this thing have a zero setting?.......2007-05-20

To all of you who fell for it once again, I shall repeat myself, though in a slightly different and more direct way: if you want jazz go and buy a Charlie Parker record; if you want great jazz singing, go and buy some Billie, or Ella for that matter, or some 50s Sinatra. Jaime Cullum is not, and never has been a jazz musician. He was labelled as one simply to sell pop records, but that is an insult to pop music. This is yet again rubbish thrown at you by a multi international company. A fool is easily parted with his money, yet again! Ha HA HA HA HA!!!!

2 out of 5 stars What happened?.......2007-03-20

After two fabulous contemporary "old school" jazz albums which I would recommend to anyone (Pointless Nostalgic and Twentysomething), this album is more like some sort of bad half-breed between "old school" jazz and pop. And not that a cross between jazz and pop couldn't be good music, but this one just really isn't. It seems that he is trying to transition between musical genres, and is falling flat on his face in the process. I have listened to it again and again trying to make myself like it, but it just isn't happening. Save a few tracks, the songs on this album are rather uninspired and dull, and I fear that these days Jamie Cullum really does "Want To Be A Popstar"...

4 out of 5 stars Better voice, less hooks.......2007-03-16

Cullum's voice and musicality are better than his last album but the tunes don't hook me they same way as the stuff he&Ben wrote for "Twentysomething."

However, this is still an enjoyable album with lots to like.

5 out of 5 stars Great music.......2007-03-14

I hope this guy has a long career in music.

I wish Amazon would start packaging as the previously did, just last year. I had to order this and seveal other things twice just to get an undamaged copy. PLEASE aamazon return to the days when you cared about items arriving undamaged.

Move over bossa nova! There's a new beat coming out of Brazil in the form of Cansei de Ser Sexy (Portuguese for "Tired of Being So Sexy"), and it's raucous. CSS consists of six 20-something São Paulistas who are injecting some international exuberance into the Seattle-based Sub Pop label. The only inkling that the group hails from the Southern Hemisphere is the smattering of Brazilian-tinged Portuguese that peppers the album, along with a barely detectable accent in lead singer Lovefoxxx's delivery. The CSS sound is far from traditional folksy world music; rather, it's a mishmash of '80s new wave, electronica, danceable beats, and cheeky lyrics (which are just a bit naughty). Think Berlin and Blondie, with a dash of Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Muffin Spencer of Brassy. This largely female group (all women except the drummer) will have you running to the dance floor in your slouchy boots and skinny jeans faster than you can say "Let's Make Love and Listen to Death from Above"--the first single from the album. --Renata Sadunas

Album Description

From Brazil, CSS is the first South American band Sub Pop has foisted upon the global marketplace. The title is Portuguese for "Tired Of Being Sexy" and the sound is a thick, pulsating thing full of haphazard synths and a come-on of call and response that tears down any attempt at posturing. It's equal parts rock mantra and throwback into something new, transcending boundaries of genre and geography. It goes full speed into dance territory, into the unknown and untouched, to emerge all hot and bothered with wild electro-rock. Quick, tightly-wound, unfastened, and supreme.

4 out of 5 stars lets make digital 21st. century punkfunk.......2007-07-29

This sound is an interesting mix that reminds me of the post punkers Bush Tetras from my home town NYC in the early eighties, as well as Tom Tom Club in mid-eighties (I always mix in these bands wth CSS along with Sigue Sigue Sputnik, but CSS have successfully managed to transecend that sound with a new millenium energetic fulgent space-race sound that electrofunk's its way to my deejay playlist always these daze. Bravo. Love this album, love these girls and love Brazil!!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The drug of all drugs!.......2007-03-27

Listen to this album with an absolutely clear head to achieve your mandatory giggling fits, laughter crises, hyperactive jumping periods, obscene gestures and spastic spasms, as you will be launching headlong into an almost-hour long headtrip.

Mindless Self Indulgence is made of the spastic, iconoclastic quartet, Little Jimmy Urine, Steve Righ?, Lyn-Z and Kitty. Their mission statement is clear; fun. Dumb, blind, chaotic and downright offensive fun that doesn't bother itself with what's appropriate, or what's not.

"Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy" is, as should be expected from the paragraph above, is a brainless, unrestrained, uncategorized, strange, hyperactive and overall wild album filled to the brim with a healthy touch of punk. The songs are short ("A 2 minute song just 1 minute and 59 seconds, too god damn long!"), fast-paced, laced with Urine's quirky vocal styles, Righ?'s punk-ish guitars, Kitty's extreme drums and Lyn-Z's almost absent but somehow extremely present bass.

The cardinal rule of listening to this album is to expect anything. One minute, it might be metal, the next, it might turn into hip hop, and next thing you know, it's full-blown nintendocore mixed in with trance/techno. You have to listen to this album with a clear head, like I said, to understand the sheer irony and unrestrained energy of it.

A perfect album by four zany musicians who just want to get stupid.

5 out of 5 stars the better years.......2006-12-23

msi's fgwsss delivers several componants that raise it, at least in my eyes, to the status of best msi album ever.

first of all, mr. urine delivers the sort of vocal range he only carried up until a year or so ago. i've been to a couple recent shows, and jimmy just can't hit high notes the way he does on this album anymore. the song structures are dancable but not overly repetitive, and the sometimes nonsensical lyrics cover a wide range of topic matters which, while horribly offensive, are gloriously clever and immature. if you're ever planning on going to an msi concert, you're definately going to hear quite a few of the songs from this album, and with good reason. it has earned a well deserved place as a cult classic.

listening to msi is like listening to a child with adhd who has learned his first swears, and few things are as rare and beauteous.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, This album was MINDBLOWING!.......2006-07-16

Wow, just the other day I bought a copy of the album, wow, it was pure originality. I heard a couple songs from a website that I liked, and alot of my friends, would carry the CD in their hands, so I'd figure I'd buy it, and see what it was all about. From the minute I heard it, I was hooked. 30 songs of genius. It has a very free, uncaring, fun beat, very far from any "pop" "punk-pop" or "poppy". In my opinion, my favourite song was "Faggot". This is great CD, and If your into listening to new music, just try it, I can assure you, you'll be hooked. 5 stars all the way!

3 out of 5 stars Cool, intense electronic head trip . . ........2005-11-30

. . . that is, if yer a major tweak-head. Otherwise, this CD hardly qualifies as music. If yer looking for melody, you can pretty much forget it here. Since I quit doing drugs, I can only take this stuff in small doses. But it is useful for clearing the ole cranium. And as far as the "outrage factor" goes, it might tee off an uptight & conservative mom or dad, but for me, music stopped being shocking long ago and this is far from the sickest stuff I've heard anyway.

4 out of 5 stars What an underrated band!.......2005-10-19

This album rocks. In the purest form of what rock should be these days. It's a new direction that I'm afraid will fizzle out and disappear. It's raw, chaotic, original and flawed. Yes, flawed. It's not perfect or refined by any means. But that's why I like it so much.

I don't think a single songs runs past 2:30 on this album, which is why we're given 30 tracks (in alphabetical order). This makes the album blaze past you really fast. It's all good, all aggressive and angry. Most of the lyrics are very satyrical and funny, but they're meant to be. It's not a serious album in any way. It's like a violent petting zoo. Loads of fun.

It must be heard to be understood, no real label covers what this music captures. It defies generes. My favorite songs are Bitches, Clarissa, Faggot, I hate Jimmy Page, and Planet of the apes. This band isn't for everyone, but it's a definate underground favorite. Worth a try.

In some parallel, '70s-groove-askew universe it's Eagles of Death Metal who are the superstars, not merely the studiously dizzy spin-off of Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme and his Palm Desert school chum/lapsed journalist Jesse Hughes. Building forcefully on the charms of their '04 debut, their camaraderie foregoes ego (QOTSA mainstay Homme is EODM's drummer, pal Hughes its falsetto-voiced, ax-slinging rock star) for a retro, ambitiously naïve garage-rock-meets-boogie-down ethos that labors under the delightfully perverse misconception that the New York Dolls, Hot Chocolate and T Rex were all actually the same band - one that Muddy Waters and The Big Bopper occasionally sat in with. Less demented talents have pumped similar shtick full of self-conscious irony; here H&H simply grab it by the neck and shake furiously, yielding "I Gotta Feeling"'s Bolan boogie, the Stones-ish "I Like to Move.." and Dolls-swaggering "Keep Your Head Up," before moving onto such enticing genre demolition derby entries as "Ballad of Queen Bee and Baby Duck," "Chase the Devil" and the giddy "Shasta Beast." --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

The Dream Boys dynamic duo is back. This Joshua Homme produced album sounds exactly the way God intended live rock and roll to sound: raw, sleazy, and spiffy. It's more hook laden than your old job at the bait shop. Put your dancing shoes on.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Love the eagles of death metal! Cool guys too!.......2007-05-08

Great album. If you love summertime driving music. This reminds me of the good parts of the 70's. Awesome live band too.

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but not as expected.......2007-01-12

This album is good, but that is only because Eagles of Death Metal is a good band.

After having listened to the first album this album is obviously subpar. Their first album (Peace, Love, Death Metal) is, in my own opinion, much better written and executed. Overall a good album but most definetly buy the first album as well.

3 out of 5 stars sophomore slump.......2007-01-12

not that great--especially coming off their first album. or maybe their first album was just too good...

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first album........2006-12-13

I expected more after their debut album - still good but not great by any means.

1 out of 5 stars too absurd, really.......2006-09-28

I've never heard the music of Queens of the Stone Age, but if it's anything like this side project then it probably ain't 2 good. All the music on here has way too much variety; normally that's a good thing, but in this case it's just plain inconsistent. There are a few tunes I liked such as "I Want You so hard", "Just Nineteen" and "cherry cola", but the rest either didn't have good chord progressions or were extremely strange melodies that made no sense usually. I got bored of listening to it at about song seven. don't buy this CD, it's weird.

A FEW OF THE SONGS ARE GREAT, BUT I WAS TURNED OFF WITH SO MANY RAP TYPE SOUNDS THAT SOUND THE SAME, OVER AND OVER. THE WORST WAS THE HEAVY BREATHING AND MOANING SONG--WOULDN'T HE RATHER HEAR YOU? WE DON'T NEED THREE OF US. THE MOANING IS A DISTRACTION FROM THE MUSIC--HOW DO YOU DANCE TO MOANING?

1 out of 5 stars You call this strip club music?.......2004-02-13

When I first brought this CD into the office, everybody thought I was nuts. After just one listen, it became everyone's favorite. The music is sexy, funny, and funky. It is traditional in the office that we play this CD in the late afternoon when everyone's tired and needs a little pep. Everyone sings along to "Superfreak", "Brick House", and "Strokin'".

When I bought "Strip Jointz 2", all the guys went crazy! That is now the office's second favorite CD. These CDs are highly recommended!

Babyface's sought-after, chart-slaying days may be over, but it's all good. If there's one thing the R&B phenomenon demonstrates on Grown & Sexy, is that growing up is sexy. This he proves through a clutch of songs that are more emotionally ripe and satisfying than any of the tricked out tracks that have jerked-and-chugged their way onto recent love song shuffles. Rather than scavenging through Missy Elliott's backyard for an "it" sound, Babyface rummages in his own cellophane-smooth style, and it pays off handsomely. The layers of "Mad, Sexy, Cool" swirl over a pleasingly summery lyric and float into the sophisticated lust bath of "Can't Stop Now." "Sorry for the Stupid Things" speaks straight-up in an apologetic midtempo groove to wrongs committed in an adult relationship. "Good To Be in Love" spills out pure, hand-clapping celebration and "Gettin to Know U" explores a funked-up '70s-era Curtis Mayfield sensibility. As sexy as Grown may be, Babyface makes the case that keeping it real may be as hot as he needs to get. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Babyface has never been better.......2006-08-21

If you like Babyface's music you MUST get this CD. You can listen to it over and over. The CD is excellent for a romantic evening. This CD goes through all the emotions of relationships. I don't have the CD in front of me right now but my favorite tracks are 1, 2, 6,7,&8. Mr. Edmonds is definitely grown and sexy; knows much more; has what you've been missing, etc (you need to listen to all 10 reasons. This is the CD that should be playing when you and someone special have it going down, you are in the final round, and sexy (listen to track 1)for the rest. I can't say enough good things about this CD, it is one of his best.

4 out of 5 stars he'snot a baby!!.......2006-07-28

babyface is not a baby so if you are looking for a baby that is singing insteasd of a man that is singing than maybe you need to buy a differant cd!! it is not ok with me that babyfce wants to be called sexy because he is not a girl he is a boy and only girls are sexy where i live!!! bethatasitmay babayface sings lots of songs on this cd that will help a lady stay at your house when even after she sees your collection of kitten statues and you tell her that there your moms and your keeping them but she doesn't believe you!! if you want to have girls stay at your house for longer than they were planning to this cd and the songs on it will help you convince her to do that ok?!!

5 out of 5 stars This Lifetime, It's Goin' Down!.......2006-05-23

This is such a mature, jazzy and mellow cd. The first date I went on with my very muscular, grown,& sexy man, he was jammin this cd. It really broke the ice, and eased the mood for me, considering his stature. Although we only kissed barely that day, by the end of the date, I was totally in love with my man. Since then, we have professed our love for each other. I dedicate this cd to our "kindred spirits".

4 out of 5 stars Next time try a gorgeous duet with Regina Belle...you won't be disappointed !.......2006-04-29

I always liked his music , he's one of the best on the market.
Lately he has made some wrong choices , looking for an easier success...The Anita Baker's story should teach him something....
I like this CD , but don't think that it's spectacular...
It's very much 'Babyface' , which is OK .

5 out of 5 stars sexy and cool sans the crazy..........2006-03-28

To put is simply, this album is as cool as the other side of the pillow. I mean, cool, sultry melodies with a gorgeous tenor or falsetto voice laid down on top of them, simply smooth all the way through. I'll tell you, whether you're looking for something to set the mood or something to just chill and relax to after a long, hard day, this one will definitely hit the spot.

Album Description

Hip enough for hipsters but nerdy enough for nerds, Freezepop are back with a new batch of songs that you won't be able to get out of your head. Their second full-length album, Fancy Ultra•Fresh, builds upon the minimal electropop of their past releases, with an edgier, fuller sound. With songs ranging from the aggressively dancey "Parlez-Vous Freezepop?" to the hushed "Outer Space," to the cheeky and blippy "Stakeout," Freezepop have introduced new sonic elements to their repertoire, while remaining true to their catchy synthpop roots. Fancy Ultra•Fresh, which also includes video and interactive multimedia content, will be released by the Archenemy Record Company on May 18. Formed in 1999, Freezepop is the union of Liz Enthusiasm vocalist/fashion plate), the Duke of Pannekoeken (programmer extraordinaire), and the Other Sean T. Drinkwater (synths/vocoder/wacky hijinks). All the Freezepop songs are programmed on a Yamaha QY-70, a handheld battery - powered sequencer. Their debut album, Freezepop Forever, was released domestically by Archenemy in 2001, and was licensed for worldwide release by Elefant, a Spanish indiepop label. The band have also released several EPs of new material as well as remixes by the Future Bible Heroes, Soviet, Stephan Groth (Apop/Fairlight Children), and more. Freezepop have songs featured in four Sony PlayStation2 video games, including araoke Revolution, Frequency, and A mplitude.

4 out of 5 stars Freezepop: Fancy Ultra-Fresh (Archenemy, 2004).......2006-01-07

Following in the footsteps of Human League, Ladytron, and Kraftwerk, Freezepop is a blend of fanciful, energetic dance pop mixed with songs that are more on the serious side. About half the songs on this album are fun filled tunes, while the other half are darker, more intricate pieces. In fact, I find this disc to be kind of schizophrenic, but, in many ways, I like it because it is so two sided. The band consists of front lady Liz Enthusiasm, the Duke of Pannekoeken, and the other Sean T. Drinkwater. Yes, probably not their real names, but their names seem to fit the playfulness of their songs. Also, I am always fascinated with electronic bands that become attached to one sequencer or keyboard and stick with it, trying to make it do what they want. Freezepop programs all their songs on a Yamaha QY-70 to great effect.

Fancy Ultra-Fresh begins with a tongue-and-cheek stalker song called "Stakeout". Liz states in here monotone voice over pulsing drums that she likes the boy who works in the indie-record store. Included on the disc is a video of the song. It's a catchy tune that will have you dancing in your living room. It's a fast tempo song that reminds me of an electronic version of Marine Research or Heavenly. "Bike Thief" comes next. After the first two songs, the listener begins to get the impression that Freezepop is into crime or some sort of mental disturbance. No worries though, the album does change after the Kleptomaniac song "Bike Thief" and the stalker song "Stakeout." "Bike Theif" is more of an industrial song with distorted vocals at points. It has a robotic chorus and the appearance of those Marine Research style vocals make an appearance as well. "I am not Your Gameboy" begins and ends with a sample from many people's childhood memories: Speak and Spell. This is Liz's theme to the boys about her being a human being and not a plaything.

"Parlez-Vous Freezepop" displays one of Liz's other talents: French. The French syllabification works great on this song with the electronic music. This is a medium-tempo song that is up-beat, but, frankly, I couldn't tell you what she is saying. "Outer Space" is probably one of my favorite songs on the disc. This is a more atmospheric song with spacey keys and simple drums. It's a song about solitude and is definitely their strongest showing on the disc. "Duct Tape My Heart" is a playful, yet serious song about Liz's feelings. This is typical love song, but it does fall into the darker side of their disc, which I like. "Manipulate (Mastermind Mix)" really reminds me of a cross between Ladytron and the Human League. The song structure of this song, "Duct Tape" and "Outer Space" are fantastic. I hope to see a darker album along this line in the future. "Emotions and Photons" is also a great song that recalls all the good things about 80's electronic pop.

All in all, this disc is solid. The production is stellar and the songs are strong contributions to the genre. If you love to dance or love bands like Ladytron, this certainly is a band for you. Give Freezepop a try and you will be in for a tasty treat.

1 out of 5 stars I'm so sorry I bought this........2005-12-02

STOP!! Before you go and spend your well-earned money, think twice. Freezepop is funny, bubbley, and sort-of catchy at first, but trust me, it gets old very quickly. I bought it used for something like 5 or 6 bucks and I still lament the purchase. I don't even like seeing it while flipping through my cd book. What a piece of trash.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent...a must buy!.......2007-07-23

This CD was very nice and smooth, Kim Waters is the lead sax player on most of the tracks and he did a great job. Im just sorry that his own CDs arent this good.

3 out of 5 stars Average.......2007-07-18

An eclectic mix of music, however, there is a distinct lack of congruency between the original track and sax overlay. It sounds as if each were recorded seperately and then laid over one another. There are better contemporary jazz choices. For the record, this $13 cd doesn't come in a jewel case, it comes in a cardboard cd case, like many cd singles.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best cds yet.......2007-05-26

Even if you are not a fan of "todays" music, this cd will help you appreciate that music. This cd is great to listen to. You will even enjoy what "Streetwize" did with and "old school" favorite on track 10. You will not be disappointed with this cd. Streetwize, keep doing your thing. Great job.

5 out of 5 stars perfection...oh yeah!.......2007-07-23

this cd nears perfection as close as any cd (lp, album, 8-track; whatever) has ever before - forget the white album, folks. the raspy sexy siren vocals harmonize with big band groove and swing and jazz like no ever women has before, with an attitude that ANY women can relate to - each song has its perfect blend & is so different, yet so beautifully executed as the next. Give it to your boyfriends girls, cuz they always fail you & no one embodies it better than devil doll. Sheer perfection. Really. Gals - you'll sing along out loud & guys, you'll love it too. BUY IT!!

4 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-01-11

I like this CD a lot. She's like Fiona Apple but with the essence of an earlier era. Rockin' and soulful. I like it.

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2006-01-30

This album is great. Colleen is a great singer and the music is exceptional. My most favorite songs are: "St. Christopher" "It Was Raining" "King of Brooklyn" "Liquor Store" "Left" and "If I Died In Your Arms". I don't really like "Walk With Me" but its not torture.

4 out of 5 stars Punky lounge singer???.......2006-01-04

Too bad there are some folks out there ripping this album, because they thought it was someone else. Oh well, that's the way some folks are...

Anyway, this is a pretty solid album. Pretty diverse selection of styles... Wouldn't be surprised to hear some of this in a nice nightclub or a seedy strip bar. On a few tunes, she really belts it out! It's smoky, sexy, jazzy, punkish, brassy, b#llsy, b$tchy with a pinch of burlesque-y gurl power. Total of 18 tracks, but would have been better if they cut a few off. It's an excellent listen, but some of the songs start to run together, simply because there are so many. Personal favorite is track 2, "You Are the Best Thing and the Worst Thing". Check it out. If you made it this far to find this album, then you will probably like it.

5 out of 5 stars Wicked fun.......2005-12-30

Stumbled across this CD and it hasn't let me go since! She has amazing vocals, and the songs are catchy and haunting. Favorite tracks include Heart Sized Crush and King of Brooklyn, but I love them all! On constant replay in my car, at home, and at work.

1 out of 5 stars This ain't real strip club music!.......2004-02-13

Man, this ain't no real strip club music! The only song on here that is worth the cd's price is K7's song, and that ain't even strip club music either! If you want to hear REAL strip club music, buy a DJ Boss Pimp or 2 Live Crew cd and call it a day.

4 out of 5 stars Hard to find songs in one place........1999-02-02

As a mobile D.J., I've found the "Strip Jointz" series of compilations very helpful (my wife doesn't appreciate the cover art or the concept, but...). If you're a fan of R & B or rap music, these include some very hard to find selections all on one CD. I bought this one for "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix A Lot, "Dazzey Dukes" by Duice and "Give It To Me Baby" by Rick James. Great to throw on as background at a party, too!
