This meeting of musical minds is all about the groove, and Psyco's principal performers--Doctor L, Tony Allen, Jean Phi Diary, Jeff Kellner, and Cesar Anot--seek to cross-reference rhythm-heavy styles (funk, fusion, reggae, and African music ) with a distinctly jazzy approach. On top of everything, they lay down singing, spoken word, or occasional vocal harmonies. These guys like to jam, be it the laid-back, jazzy style of "Time to Take a Rest, Part II" or the lively funk vibe of "Afropusherman." But the emphasis isn't always on the familiar, as the fractured, avant-garde approach of "K.I.S Compatible" and the slow-motion ambient freefall of "Time to Take a Rest, Part I" attest. This collective combines its unerring sense of rhythm with studio effects to tantalize your ears and your feet, and while the results are generally ear-catching, the insistence on repetition undermines some tracks. In spite of its flaws, though, Psyco on Da Bus has many good moments to groove to or chill out to, depending on your mood. --Bryan Reesman

4 out of 5 stars Daring Music That You Don't Hear Everyday.......2003-02-05

It's hard to qualify this CD, the musicians are from various African nations recording in Paris, mixing West African musical sounds and rhtyhms with interesting overdubbing and mixing, the kind of thing you just don't hear very often, if at all. Which is probably why I can't categorize it, and neither can the major radio stations, so they don't play it. Which is too bad, these guys (notable TonyAllen who played drums with Fela Kuti in the 70s and 80s) have created a CD that will stay in your home rotation for quiet some time.

While you're at it check out Orchestra Baobab's Specialists of All Styles, kind of like a Senegalese Buena Vista Social Club.

4 out of 5 stars Cool afrobeat jazz.......2002-01-17

As usual I ain't sure what you call this music, but it's cool. . . ..afro beat? world jazz? . .. whatever . . . these guys out of Paris are both cookin' and chillin' at the same time . . . .an irresistible mix. Nigerian Tony Allen's drums set the pace, and the other guys are more than doing their share. And Doctor L's production brings it all together. The spoken words ain't nothin' startling, but they invariably have a calming lilt and an underlying "lets be cool" tone. In one song Allen speaks about "keeping it simple" . . . . .and while the whole cd has a deceptively simple feel, well, I reckon there is a lot of good stuff happenin' here. The mix of the musicians, the writing and the producing make for a very satisfying time. Intelligent and mellow and funky. Check it out. . . .

This music collective combines its sense of rhythm with studio effects to excite your mind and tantalize your feet.
