More hiss than an angry cat.......2005-01-05

The content on this disc is hard to beat. It has a good number of solid, desirable tracks - many of which are difficult to find on other compilations. This is the only reason I gave it two stars. But there's one BIG problem...

I have NEVER heard sound this bad off a pre-recorded CD before. Even in the first track, you don't have to listen very deeply to hear scratches and pops. And some of the titles have so much hiss in the background, you'd swear you were listening to a half-worn cassette tape. When I first put this disc in, I started checking the speakers because I thought something was awry with my system. Nope - just dreadful sound from the disc. It literally sounds like someone dubbed the songs from LP to cassette and then over again to compact disc.

This one isn't digitally remastered, it's belt-sanded.

A handful of hard to find hits in one place........2000-04-28

Another great compilation. Where else could one find all these great old songs? Do The Casinos have a greatest hits album? I bet not. But "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" is a classic of the era, and one of the sweetest love songs of all time. What a timeless line: "If you must go, oh I won't grieve. If you wait a lifetime before you leave."

I also love "What Time Is It" by The Jive Five (where are they now?) and the relatively obscure "Your Husband, My Wife" by The Brooklyn Bridge. This was a hit in New York (where Johnny Maestro ruled first with the Crests and then a full decade later with the B. Bridge), but seemed to get little airplay anywhere else.

Twenty four songs make for a full value in this one disc. At least twenty are worth listening to time and tme again. Great value.

Great!!!.......1999-04-24

The only thing that keeps me from rating 5 stars is that a couple of these songs are almost unheard of, and were certainly not big hits.(Give him a great big kiss, I can never go home, Your husband, my wife.) But there is a lot of music for the money. High quality sound, all original music. All in all, a great CD!!

This little set is simply awsome, It comes with a fold out poster, & a very unique case...To even do one better it offers the early version's of Now The World & Reiver's Music....(Diffrent then NTW on the import of sing the sorrow & the version of Reiver's music that is mixed in 5.1 with the collectors edition)...Both of these tracks were only offered on vinyl before now...& to top it off, it comes with an alternate version of the girls not grey video...Worth every penny, & its almost impossible to get now...EVEN ON EBAY..Pick this up as soon as you find it.

Great..........2007-07-06

but could have been epic. AFI's music transcends the genre boundaries quite well, and makes for great listening even when stripped down to a string quartet arrangement. Unfortunately Vitamin Records are so quick to capitalize on the band's success that they don't take the time to go over this album and fine tune it to perfection. As noted in the other reviews some of the songs are mislabeled. Further evidence of Vitamin Records' haste at caching in on this can be found in the lax musical arrangements, particularly on The Leaving Song Pt 2 (mislabeled as A Single Second). Although it is one of the standout tracks here one of the most powerful parts of the original song is the bridge, where Jade Pudget's guitar delivers a creepy albeit powerful build up for the final chorus. On the string arrangement the bridge is simply alright, and all four instruments play the exact same notes instead of the complex buildup featured on the original version. This problem plagues a lot of the album, the bridge on Girls Not Grey is less than stellar as well, the cello and viola take up too much space when the violins (lead guitar and vocals) should be more prominently featured.
Don't get me wrong, this album is amazing, and I love it, but it just urks me that it's not the epic that it could be. When you listen to Apocolyptica you know that they are truly feeling the music when they play Metallica, listening to this you can tell that these musicians are just playing some sheet music to pay the rent.

A Change of Mood.......2005-10-26

Well, I think this is a great CD - I love punk as much as the next man (Bad Religion, Pennywise, AFI, Strung Out etc) but even I sometimes want to relax and not jump around the room like an idiot. I found "Punk Goes Acoustic" a nice way to listen to great songs in a more mellow style, and this string quartet cd also does that perfectly. Definitely worth getting, or even buying for your mum for xmas.....

Great music that really makes you appriciate AFI.......2004-11-26

This album really shows off AFI's songwriting talents because it strips down the melodies to classical instruments, and it is performed beautifully. A must for any AFI fan or Classical, almost Opera-esque listener

Good, but what's with the titles?.......2004-09-08

If you like string music and you like AFI, you should certainly enjoy this. However, someone at Vitamin (the record company) apparently wasn't checking their facts - the entire track list is mislabled terribly except for two songs, and the label mishap apparently carried on over to Amazon.com. I've corrected the track list here:

Can someone tell me if "moto blanc voice" is the same version that is at the moment in her video? At the video header it says just "Real girl(remix)" ??
Because there is no samples I would need some verification to this 'cause I really want just the same version (more like dance genre) that is in the latest music video release of this song...

You can go wrong if you don't ask 'cause there is many versions of this song released...that's why I need to be sure before I order and pay over 10 euros..

disappointing selection of mixes for a great track.......2007-03-09

as soon as I saw the word "elektrika" in the name of one of the mixes on this disc, I was thrilled, anticipating a slamming electro dance mix of this hot chick rocker from Kim's latest CD--and I was also disappointed to see it was called the Ian Finch Elektrika EDIT. I was sure I was going to love it and want the full length mix. Instead, I was treated to a boring mix that didn't try to hard to bring any energy to the track, stripping all the original power of the song and vocals. It's simply a heavy, slowed down beat from the original tempo, with a very minimal amount of instrumentation to back it up. And the beat drops out for quite a while, leaving us with just kim's voice and a sustained synth--which is exactly what the "perfect chill mix" is from start to finish. After that, the only other thing you get on here is an acoustic live version of european soul.

So, unless you are a Kim completist like myself, I'd just stick to the album version--and the entire full length CD for that matter, because it is electro retro goodness from start to finish.

Impressive return for Kim Wilde.......2007-02-22

I was quite a fan of Kim Wilde for the space of about two albums...the eponymous debut and 'Select'. The further she headed into mainstream pop the less interested I became. Somewhere around 25 years after her first album, she has re-emerged (from the potting shed where she wrote books and articles on gardening.) Her new single 'Perfect Girl' harkens back to her best early work. Catchy sing along chorus, a bit of techno synthesier, some suprisingly edgy crunching distorted guitar, big beat drums and the voice. It's all good happy fun and a joy from start to finish (were you expecting Joy Division?) Kim's voice is in great shape and the song bounces along like her classic edgy new wave-pop hits of old (think Chequered Love). It's as if the middling pop/funk/dance/nrg detours that she took after the first two albums never happened. It's been more then 20 years since she sounded this good. The vibe is very 80's, in the best ways. This is top notch stuff and makes me quite curious about the forthcoming cd. Good heavens, has it really been almost 25 years? Welcome back Kim! By the way, the video is available on Kim's website.

This is in complete contrast with their "Hotel Yorba" single. This was my favorite tune from the White Blood Cells record. Who else could pull off such an adrenaline rush that could incorporate the phrase "it bears repeating". But the aah aah aah aah chorus is really what tips the scale on this one. You'll be humming it for days. Oh yeah, cool video too - it's on this version of the single.
