Classic Acid

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The second title in Moonshine's Electronic Music Classics series, this 10-track compilation offers a commendable if brief primer on the dawn of the "acid" era, from Joey Beltram's "Energy Flash" to Josh Wink's "Higher State of Consciousness." Being that the distinguishing feature of the genre is the elastic rhythm sound of the Roland TB303 drum machine, there is a tendency for things to occasionally get repetitive. For the most part, however, it's a nostalgic trip most raveheads will delight in taking. --Aidin Vaziri

URB
Classic Acid presents a clear focus on the modulating pulse of an oscillating TB-303 filter that has come to define the acid sound as most of the tracks in this 10-pack display to the extreme.

4 out of 5 stars Really nice voice.......2007-05-30

I just ran across Maysa here on Amazon and listened to the samples. The CD is very very nice, she has a beautiful voice and I love the music. Mellow and quiet.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Classic Soul.......2007-04-27

This is one of 2 in my life I've ever gladly downloaded. Maysa did justice to the remakes and she is a truly underestimated goddess in music. Keep doin' your thang, Maysa.

5 out of 5 stars Maysa's Sweet Soul Classic.......2007-02-26

Balto., MD native and former Stevie Wonder back up singer Maysa Leak does it again. First of all, this is a cover album. Perhaps this sets the stage for uneasiness, but after listening, there is no room for disappointment. Maysa is an authentic artist. Her sweet soulful silky sound is clearly her own. And for sure, it is her sweet silky sound that elevates these 10 soul classics to another level. The level of smooth and jazzy. Of course I am a believer in originality, and truly there is nothing like the real classic itself. However, Maysa's interpretation of these songs is not to be ignored. Give a listen to "Come Go With Me" and "Love Won't Let Me Wait". These are smokin' treatments!! This cd reflects some of what she listened to while growing up in the 70s. Apparently she listened well. She does a very good job here. I appreciate the musical change. Soft/mellow/jazzy.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-02-24

I love Maysa, but I was disappointed to hear her cover so many other people's songs. One of the many attributes I love about her is her originality and I missed that on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Music.......2007-02-13

Maysa does great with this album and you must buy it. Her voice will get into your head and put you into a sweet mood.

5 out of 5 stars unadulterated rock-n- roll.......2007-07-16

At this stage of my life, I do not have the time to listen to as much of the old Hard-Rock music that I would like. However, this QSM gem is always a trip down memory lane. When my wife is out of the house, I crank this up as loud as possible!!!! Oh, to be 20 years old again.

1 out of 5 stars Better Remembered.......2007-03-10

This album/CD was only a few dollars, thankfully! It had, perhaps, two cuts that were worth remembering. Too bad I didn't remember that when I took the offer (like a hungry trout).

It's better left in the dust bin.

4 out of 5 stars 60's revisited.......2007-01-09

Great walk down memory lane. I had forgotten their unique sound, and I enjoyed listening to it once again. You can hear the band grow and change as they moved from rock and roll to their Quicksilver sound.

4 out of 5 stars Return to the origin of modern music.......2007-01-03

Few gen X or Y people know that Quicksilver Messenger Service was another vital piece of the musical pie that came out of the 60's/early 70's..........for those of you who don't know them.....pickup this 'best of' and connect the dots to modern jam bands........good stuff. bcp

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing - sounds muffled and flat.......2006-12-12

I have to disagree strongly with the review below which says that the sound quality on this disc is "superb." It's not. In fact, it's one of the worst sounding discs I've purchased in a long time. On many of the cuts the higher frequencies are missing; this is probably because over long periods of time, recordings on tape (i.e. the master tapes used to produce this CD) deteriorate. As a result, the music sounds dull and muffled. Also, I was surprised how dated many of these songs are, both in musical style and the lyrics. I was a big fan of QMS "back in the day," but this disc is a loser.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An excellent garage rock sampler.......2007-07-22

This is one of several albums (LPs, CDs, and Box Sets alike) to bear the title of "Nuggets." Specifically, it's the first entry in a three part series, originally released by Rhino Records in the mid-80s. The series was intended to be a companion to Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968, a double LP released by Elektra Records in 1972. Rhino would go on to release a four-disc box set of the same title (which is probably the most famous member of the Nuggets family) in the mid 90s. The box set included all of the tracks from the 1972 LP.

The purpose of Nuggets (the LP, the series, and the box set) was to reissue undeservedly little-known, forgotten, or just plain obscure rock 'n' roll tunes from the mid '60s, and this is achieved with remarkable success. In fact, the box set (especially the 27 tracks that made up the original LP) is pretty much essential listening for anyone who even remotely cares about rock music. The kind of music found on a Nuggets album is wild, exuberant, and (usually) brilliant, a pocket-sized summation of just why rock 'n' roll is so great. Although not as stunnignly good as the box set, this disc is also an excellent listen for several reasons.

For one thing, it has 12 tracks in common with the box set (and 6 with the original LP), making it an excellent introduction to the Nuggets sound for someone who doesn't want to shell out the cash for a four disc set. They're also stunning songs in their own right: The Standells' "Dirty Water" is a strutting slice of bluesy proto-punk with a mean little guitar lick and some snarling vocals, while The Chocolate Watchband's "Let's Talk About Girls" threatens to outdo the bloody mindedness and raw sexuality of the 'Stones. The Count Five's "Psychotic Reaction" is a ridiculously catchy two-chord smasher that brilliantly apes the Yardbirds (and sets the template for hundreds of other garage bands to follow), while the Seeds sound brilliantly bizarre on "Pushin' Too Hard" and "Can't Seem To Make You Mine." The Amboy Dukes bridge the gap between psychedelia and hard rock on "Journey To the Center of the Mind" (which features a young Ted Nugent slaughtering his guitar!), and the Knickerbockers craft the ultimate Beatles soundalike with "Lies." Of the six tracks that aren't on the box set, the Easybeats' "Friday On My Mind" and the Troggs' ubiquitous classic "Wild Thing" are strong highlights.

Still, this isn't a perfect disc. Since you really should have the box set in your collection, twelve of these tracks are redundant. Also, the inclusion of two songs by the Monkees ("Valleri" and "Pleasant Valley Sunday") is a little odd, as those songs are widely available elsewhere. They're not bad songs, though. A lot of these songs don't really measure up to the standards set by the box set- the 6 songs that don't overlap with the set (yes, even "Wild Thing" and "Friday On My Mind") pale in comparison to the other 12, and drag down the pleasure factor by a bit. They're not terrible songs, of course, just not quite as good as the others.

Still, for someone just getting accquainted with the world of Nuggets, this is an excellent first purchase. Just remember to come back for more!

5 out of 5 stars Great late-60s music!.......2007-07-05

One hit wonders? Sure (for the most part). Great music? You bet!

I have always been drawn to the music of the 1960s, particularly the late-1960s, and the three "Nuggets" CDs really whetted my appetite for more of the same.

While The Beatles, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, and others ruled the charts with hit after hit, the groups featured here were majority one-hit wonders, "garage bands," call it whatever you want, but it's those one-hit wonders that people love and fondly associate with this time period (I know I do with stuff from the 1990s, so I can relate to the nostalgic feelings from "dinosaurs" here).

As one listens to the tracks, you can feel the youthful energy of the times, the protest against all the so-called norms, and of young people wanting to find their own way in life as opposed to having it predetermined for them. Other songs are about drugs (oh me, oh my!) and so what? That doesn't make them any less enjoyable.

I listen to this CD from start to finish everytime and enjoy every song, but "Open My Eyes" by The Nazz and "Journey to the Center of the Mind" by The Amboy Dukes are two great tunes that keep me jamming. I find that the more I listen to it, the more I appreciate some tunes I didn't pay enough attention to the first six hundred times around.

It's wise to buy all three "Nuggets" CDs as opposed to buying just the compilation. You'd be cheating yourself out of some great music if you did. - Donna Di Giacomo

4 out of 5 stars A prize for boomers... and maybe their kids........2006-06-30

Psychadelic? I don't think I'd call most of the tunes on this album psychdelic, save perhaps the great Nazz "Open My Eyes" and the Dukes' "Journey to the Center of Your Mind.". But almost every tune here brings back great memories of my childhood, listening to amazing the new music that was coming in the wake of the great British invasion bands.

When we think of 60s music, we tend to think of the real monsters of that time, like The Beatles, Cream, Hendrix, the Doors, and so forth, but most of what we listened to was more like what you'd find on this album- great pop tunes recoded by bands with just one or two hits. Listening to this collection will bring back great memories for the over 50 crowd, and show the kids today just how much the current wave of pop owes to those who were performing back when grampa and grandma were tooling around in a VW Microbus.

4 out of 5 stars Bright Fringe of the British Invasion.......2006-02-06

-You don't have to believe that any of the songs on this well-chosen collection is "a pop classic easily surpassing anything by the Beatles" (as the feverish CD notes by Greg Shaw state) to enjoy the energy and, at times, quirkiness of the music. The comparison to the Beatles is apt because many of the groups here were touted as either "the next Beatles" (The Easybeats) or "the American answer to the Beatles" (The Beau Brummels, The Monkees). The rest of the groups were "the next Rolling Stones" or "the American answer to The Rolling Stones." The rush to get through the door that those two bands blew open resulted in music that was by turns imitative of, suggestive of, or hinting-at-while-trying-something-a-bit-different-than what the forerunners did. It hardly mattered that the forerunners had moved on to more adventurous music. This CD captures the optimism of young musicians who saw that some guitars and a drum set when applied enthusiastically backing tight (and not-so-tight) harmonies might just conquer the world, or at least that month's Billboard charts. When listening to the sometimes raw and awkward expressions of these groups (the proto-slick Monkees excepted) it helps to have been too young to vote when this music was first released, but is apparently not a requirement. Cue up this CD and don't sit back to enjoy it -- get up and move.

Looks to be the Portland band's second effort.I think I like this release as much as I did their 'Womb Star Sessions' CD(see my review).Simply more of KBA'S trademark 'inventive space rock' they seemed have semi-mastered.Best cuts here are "60 Cycles Numb","Call Me On The Headphones" and the fifteen-minute epic title track "Royal Subjects".Could swear I heard a didgeridoo and a violin in there. If you dig this genre, you might want to hunt down a copy of this disc.Worth many repeated plays.

It's an amazing cd, in fact all of them are. It's like getting high without taking drugs like good music should be. Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars King Black Acid....Smooth and Tight.......1998-08-06

I was first introduced to the melodious sounds of King Black Acid while visiting Portland, Oregon in 1997....I had strolled into a small record shop to browse the local band albums, asking the shop owner for something in the way of harmonious, selflessly indulgent phsycadelia and he handed me this album...Listening to the first song, I must say, almost turned me off, but after listening to the rest of it in one sitting, I was hooked...beautifully lyrical, instumentaly persuasive and inert, this album deserves an audience...The highlights, the sweetly rendered "Only Wine Will tell", and the kinetic "14,000 Member Acid Army", will pull you in straight away...buy it...you won't be disappointed...and strap on those big puffy headphones, light a candle, close your eyes and listen to sounds of a bright and wonderful album.

In the late 1990s, it's hip-hop that seems to blow up from local scenes to national attention on the basis of a couple of strong artists and an entrepreneurial label; witness the ascension of Eightball, Master P, and Jay-Z. In may be in that spirit--though not the post-gangsta sound favored by those three--that Classic Elements was put together. And while the album is a showcase for a few genuine talents (Producer DJ Sayeed, Ghetto Children, and Source of Labor primary among them), the majority of the album features MCs that are not yet ready for prime time. It's a shame, because the production deserves far better, with Sayeed, Mathematic, and Brian Weber contributing some truly interesting backing tracks--funky, danceable, and as instrumentally adventurous as anything that Wu-Tang's RZA has done to date. --Randy Silver

When it comes to Seattle hip-hop and the many records that have come out of this fair city, this is one of the best. Currently, Seattle is starting to get its shine with artists like Blue Scholars/Common Market, Boom Bap Project and producers like Vitamin D, Bean One and Jake One. But, this comp, which was released in the late 90s, shows how much potential the city had ten years ago. For those who are just getting into the Seattle sceene and for those who just like dope music, this comp is worth picking up. It really is "Classic Elements" DJs, emcees and that good boom bap.

        5 out of 5 stars A Great Representation of Seattle's Scene.......2000-12-01

Aside from the second song, this entire CD shows how well Seattle can represent in the hip-hop scene. With artists like Ghetto Children, Black Anger, and Source of Labor (who are really starting to make a name for themselves), this CD shows how Seattle is producing some incredible forward-thinking, head-nodding hip-hop. If you want to tune in to some great underground music that will get you appreciating good musicianship and thoughtful lyrics, pick this up.

5 out of 5 stars The beat goes on and on with the album.......2003-08-09

Not one bad song. These remixes and rares are inspired. Take the remix of Llorca's My Precious thing featuring Ladybird. WOW is this hot. I've purchased two of these one for work, one for the car. I use this in teaching SPIN class.. some awesome running songs here to. If you like a good downtempo mix and like the cutting edge find yourself drifting off to the world of Llorca and Jori's mixes. Really really really nice.

3 out of 5 stars an overview of the label thus far.......2003-02-23

Classic and rare is an interesting double mix album with Jori Hulkkonen handling the classics while Laurent Garnier selects the rare tracks- not necessarily "mixed" per se, but that works to the album's advantage in that you get to hear truly rare tracks without being limited to just songs that beatmix well. On disc one, Jori gives us Avril's "Velvet Blues" as a starter, very chilled but with a Radiohead kinda beat. This style continues through "Sugar Fuel" but with a Dave Gahan style vocal with some really uneasy lyrics ("I'm on your side so let me punish you"). The full on techno comes in with Elegia, which moves to a short burst of Mr. Oizo, because for real we've all heard this song, like, a million times in 99, but then Jori's skills are pushed to the front when he moves slowly into Llorca's track, bringing it more to a "party vibe". The house gets shakier as the booms get deeper with "Let Me Love U", the place where disc one sets in for the biggest vibe swell, and after the epiphany moves into Alexkid's track, which almost has a Ubiquity sound. It seems "Silvery Sounds" is put in next to represent slithering old school techno, and it is one of those tracks that is perfectly named, and moves into The Youngsters, who it seems to me is placed here as a contrast between this songs more tech house sound and the last track's (dare I say it) nostalgia. "Wasteland" goes beat heavy with an acid influence, and could be a minimalist counterpart to FSOL's "We Have Explosive", and we are let off the hook with "Nana's Waltz", sent off to a more comfortable place.
This segues into the rare stuff with the same artist's "All Around Me" which is a retweaking off the last song. It moves from there into the challenging "Sabar" a track which is mainly percussion but is more condusive to listening than dancing. "Shelter" however, maintains a more traditional beat, with vocals that keeps things from getting repetitive, but the temperature drops with "Communication from the Lab" a whooshy techno track that is like Mr. Oizo but with more substructure. "Electronic", to me, is the standout of the album, going into the space where you can see a warmer techno emerging with the addition of vocals and a more song oriented style, which moves into "Plaid", one of the smoothest songs from recent memory (carrahar's vocals are standout). "Ambrosia" falls flat however as it is derivative in that it is a little too "Pacific State" for me, going into Hosh, some very angular, by the number's techno. The next track is Garnier's "Crazy Bacon" which has Jeff Mills all over it putting in his I'm stuck in a claustrophic dark place sound, and the disc exits with DJ Kudo, whose "Tiny Loops" squiggle all over the place, but the high end sounds to me like a few hundred people trying to get the bride's attention. But wait, and keeps listening, because you'll get to hear a secret remix (and how!) of that old Streisand/Summer tune "No More Tears(Enough is Enough)", one of the craziest refreakings I've heard in awhile using Bab's high note entended over the beats as contrast. Yup, you heard me right. So enjoy... A great album for driving home from the club...not to mention a nice thank you and retrospective from a forward thinking label. Enough groove to chill, enough going on to keep ya thinking.
