2 out of 5 stars simply boring.......2005-07-23

That's probably the last time I'll buy a cd based on reviews.. one song on it 'popstar' is ok, ohterwise it's a one star. I was expecting interwoven layers of downtempo sounds/instruments, but instead it's one basic beat at a time as if the entire cd was made from a cheap sound machine. The singing and lyrics aren't all that great or original. If you want quality downtempo, look up 'Muki' or 'Plastyc Buddha' and you'll see the difference. Save your money and get something else..

5 out of 5 stars "DEFENSELESS" AGAINST WALDECK!!!.......2003-12-12

Waldeck's aplty-named "Balance of the Force" is a beautiful mixture of ambient, downtempo, dub and soulful psychedlic grooves that are great "for-play" (heehee) during those midnight sessions with that signifiant other, or when you're alone chillin' doin' whatever the hell you do. With stunning- hallucinogenic vocals and hauntingly-delightful instrumentation, "Balance of the Force" will get inside your head, heart, soul and eventually those hands and feet of yours! Just go easy on the bass--this baby is packed with it!

5 out of 5 stars This kid is hot!.......2003-09-16

A must have.
Recently heard a few cuts from this album and had to buy it.
I highly recommend this album!

5 out of 5 stars Chillin', drivin', romancin' - you'll want this!.......2002-10-15

I received a three track sampler of this disc. After listening, I ordered this disc and the remix cd. I have to say, the remix is a five-star disc as well. Not only have I played it A LOT, everyone I've played it for had to have it as well. Still, I was not as impressed with their follow-up cd. Hard to match this one though.

4 out of 5 stars Very well balanced CD.......2001-06-25

This CD has a lot of Jazz-like elements and is very easy on the ears. I especially like the song "Northern Lights". I recommend this CD to anyone who likes Acid Jazz or Drum & Bass type music.

5 out of 5 stars Belive me!.......2003-11-26

Belive me this CD it's a real masterpice of the dark side of the electronic-disco music.
But probably it's more than that it's also a continue with the new wave of many years ago.
But even it's something more...it's a desperate poems and sounds coming from an urban scream.
The bass and the drum are the rythm of this scream, the voices (most of them by Joy Malcom) are always in accordance with the music.
Sometime sweet, some time desperate (as Brian Amos in the Northern Lights, probably the most impressive song of this CD).
Be sure to buy this version (REMIXED) where you will find three different version of Defenceless (Thievery Corporation, Fauna Flash and Solar Moon)but pratically are three different songs.
You will find also two version of Wake up (Rockers HIFI and Mushroom dive).
Finally i would like to suggest to listen the Aquarius version (yes the famous song of the 60'S).
I like this CD and all the time that i listen starting from Northern Lights.....i'am sure that could not miss this CD in your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Remixes not always better.......2002-12-05

This is a solid album. I agree with most comments of the other reviewers. But I find that I will have to go out and buy the first CD to get the cut that inspired me to buy some Waldek in the first place -- Moon. In this case, I would rather have all the original cuts than two or three remixes of a few cuts. Kind of like buying Different Tastes of Honey when you'd be much better off buying Suzuki.

5 out of 5 stars STRONG AND SPELLBINDING.......2000-04-03

The effect this disc has on me is like what I experience listening to Strange Cargo. Yeah, "Wake Up" is truly outstanding, but so are some other cuts like "Slaapwagen" and "Defenceless." I thought the entire CD was hypnotic and strong.

It also contains some interesting and seriously texturelectroniked covers of some under-appreciated tuneful '70s classics like "Children of the Future" and (I, too, winced) pop-schlock like "You Only Live Twice" and "Aquarius." Engagingly, Waldeck's performances brought forward and showcased the melodies and nurtured the underlying spirit of these tunes while draining the sap out of them. I was truly surprised by their choices and delighted by the results. I read once that making beauty out of the mundane is the work of the divine. Well, it works here.

I really like this CD. It first caught my attention while being played on the PA system at the #1 music store in the Twin Cities (Electric Fetus). I had to have it then, and I'm still enjoying it now. Be sure you get the REMIXED edition of the CD entitled "Balance of The Force".

3 out of 5 stars highs and lows.......2000-02-17

The album is all over the place. Definitely worth a buy on the strength of the rockers hi-fi remix of wake up, which is exquisite.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lost Metalheadz members masterpiece.......2007-02-20

As Boymerang is been out of the scene since the release of this album, and his final remix, that being the Goldie & KRS-One track "Digital", anyone who is trying to increase their exposure need look no further.

As one of the earlier members of the greatest D&B label on the planet (Metalheadz), Boymerang's creativity, soundscaping, and drum composition are a great ode to the nearly extinct "classic intelligent jungle"...not to be confused with "classic intelligent drum n' bass" or "classic ragga"...

This CD is a memento of where the music was before Drum N' Bass had the definitions it does today...when the producers had to reach a pinnacle of the jungle sound in order to break into something other than ragga, two-step, and broken beats.

5 out of 5 stars GRAHAM SUTTON IS A MAD MAN!!!!.......2006-12-02

When I heard that the bark psychosis lead man was a drum & bass producer I almost pissed myself! He lives up to the hype too. Excellent cerebral DnB from one of the undisputed kings of post-rock!

5 out of 5 stars The Best D&B CD I Own (Maybe).......2001-07-01

I would like to start off by saying that any Drum and Bass artist on Astralwerks is excellent. So if you like Drum and Bass and happen to see any CDs by Photek, Source Direct, Adam F, or Boymerang, buy them, you are almost guaranteed to enjoy them (unless you are a lover of all that is evil, sitting in your basement planning the destruction of the entire universe by unleasing a horrible torrent of Val Kilmer films on an unsuspecting public).

The entire CD is awe inspiring, well, beides track 3 which gets on my nerves a little bit because it doesn't seem to fit. With that aside I can say this may be the best Drum and Bass CD ever, unless I want to talk about Photek - Form and Function which has to take the cake.

From the first track 'till the very last (minus track 3) the CD suspends your disbelief with the sheer complexity of the beats. The way Mr. Sutton weaves them together with the almost ambient background sounds is simply stunning. He frequently manipulates the drums to keep the beat interesting, but not so much that it becomes annoying, it merely helps to keep it from being boring.

So many people say that drum and bass is boring and repetitive, but I would have to say that Boymerang and his mates on Astralwerks are slightly different. Even though drum and bass is, at its core, very simple, it can become a beautifully emotonal form of music, but it must be payed attention to.

If you are looking fo dance music, go buy Hybrid Remix and additional production by...; if you want background music, get any of the horribly done, barely affable MTV Party to Go to the bathroom with CDs. And if you don't like drum and bass, shut up and stop pretending like you're a techno guru and go buy some crappy DJ Skribble CD.

2 out of 5 stars Another Average Drum and Bass CD.......1999-06-18

Like many CD's in the Drum and Bass genre, Balance of the Force offers nothing new. The songs not only sound like each other, they sound like a lot of D&B records. I get bored midway through the third song every time, if not earlier.

5 out of 5 stars Great DrumN'Bass Album.......1999-05-24

Boymerang's album "Balance Of The Force" is another album that represents the true meaning of Jungle and DnB - fast, mindblowing beats, alongside with Bass level set to blow every speaker, and hypnotic chords.

The grooves on this album can fit every wild party and every Chillout room. Boymerang's intense style is capable of relaxing and chilling and also intense breakdancing or headbanging as you pick your style. The most known track from the album is the first one, "Soul Beat Runna". This track represents the entire feel of the album, although each track stand for itself. The Track also has a videoclip by Guy Nisbett, That really fits the feeling of the track.

My take on the album is that it's quite good, and very true to it's genre, but most other tracks resemble themselves. Other than that, It's a great buy and the grooves are very delicious. Yum.
