Yes, Armand is an aquired taste. A lot of his music is minimal and sometimes redundant but, as with most dance music that isn't necessarily a bad thing...so long as it works. With Ghettoblaster it definatley works! Armand's production has never been cleaner and his choice of vocals never as consistent as with Ghettoblaster*. Still not as ingenious as 2Future4U, Ghettoblaster would have been a more appropriate release to follow-up New York: A Mix Odyssey.
Ghettoblaster will make you want to get out of your car and swing and bounce to that pounding New York City Beat!



*Armand says: "On this album I was going for a retro throwback 1985-89 soul up-tempo urban type sound. Chicago meets Miami meets New York City kind of thing. Or to put it differently, house meets freestyle meets hip-house meets club meets new wave."

Brilliant Use of the Jazz Idiom.......2006-08-28

The 1955 movie THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM is about a former heroin addict, Frankie Machine (Frank Sinatra), who is released from jail and rehab with high hopes for a future as a jazz drummer but is quickly sucked back into his old, self-destructive lifestyle. It is only when his old associates - including his clinging, deceitful wife, "Zosh" (Eleanor Parker) - are destroyed that Frankie, with the help of his true love, Molly (Kim Novak), can finally kick the drug habit for good and start to become the person he was meant to be. For this movie, Elmer Bernstein composed perhaps the most brilliant jazz score of any during the 1950's (and there were many great ones then, including SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS by Bernstein and ANATOMY OF A MURDER by Duke Ellington). The drum - Frankie's own instrument - provides the rhythmic basis of the score. In the film's opening its beat is alternately steady and agitated, just like Frankie's life; meanwhile, the brass screams and whirls out of control, mirroring Frankie's desperation as he runs off in search of one "last" fix. Appropriately, this is for the most part a very hard-edged, even brutal jazz score, reminiscent at times of Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein (his score for the film ON THE WATERFRONT), and Richard Rodgers' ballet SLAUGHTER ON TENTH AVENUE. Yet the melodramatic "Zosh" music helps characterize Frankie's wife as a self-dramatizing emotional cripple; a serene, even bucolic, Copland-esque sound is present, too (in the tracks "Molly" and "Morning," for instance), communicating Frankie's desire for peace of mind and a brighter future, and foreshadowing the movie's hopeful ending.

Classic Score on CD at Last.......2004-05-15

Finally! An affordable CD reissue of one of the great jazz film scores! The reviewer who criticized the sound quality apparently didn't have to live with Decca's fake stereo lp version for twenty years, or spend years trying to track down a mint copy of the original lp, or he would realize that THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH THE REMASTERING on this disc. It accurately captures the studio sound as recorded in glorious mono in 1955. If your're a Bernstein fan, don't hesitate to add this to your collection.

it's the original.......2003-02-20

I can understand one reviewer's opinion of this cd, if they are too young to have ever owned the original Lp. The quality IS top notch and it does NOT need remastering. If it sounds a little "stodgy" it's only because of the recording practices of the day, which happened in very dry studios. This is pre-Star Wars. It also helps to be familiar with the movie and the story. The dry sound actually enhances the reality of the plot.
I WOULD like to see Bernstein do a new recording, with a top notch symphony orchestra playing in a large hall, like he recently did with "To Kill a Mockingbird", but as far as this original sound track is concerned, this is the same as the original Lp, perhaps even cleaner. IT'S A WINNER!

Blistering jazz soundtrack classic; dodgy recording.......2002-05-08

I looked everywhere for this CD.

Would have given it five out of five if it wasn't for the terrible recording quality - badly in need of a remastering. And this is a 2001 reissue! Very bright sound and at the very beginning sounds like a mangled cassette tape. Bad pressing? Who knows.

The content is amazing, though. Intense... and the Frankie Machine theme is unforgettable.

Discover the lost world of French singing.......2006-02-18

The title says it all. Interested how French opera used to sound like? And I might add: should sound like? This catalogue of who was who in French singing, is an ideal place to start your discovery! The transfers of these historical recordings are fine - better than usual with EMI (no excessive filtering of the original sound).

first, i have to get something off my chest...
do people really think we take them seriously when their review says things like "this cd is mad dope" or "the new armand joint..." etc... i mean, i can be as ghetto as any of you, but when you write a review, at least TRY to sound like you went to high school and graduated.
but anyways, onwards and upwards.
Great cd, most tracks are a lot of fun, especially with me as a dj, its nice that he left the long intros in (see "boogie monster" "alienz" "bounty killaz" and "entre mi casa")
Mother Earth is a 10 minute song, and it definately doesnt feel like it. it ends and you say to yourself "i wish that had been a little longer" then you realise 10 minutes have passed. great tune.
all in all very good, with very few low spots.

Something you should check out.......2002-11-13

Dj Armand Van Helden has made an incredible album here. House, Drums N Beats and funky dance music and you got something really interesting. This album got my attention after listening to his super single "You don't know me" with Duane Harden. That was an cool dance track that made it to #1 in the UK. However most songs here aren't so commercial, they are infact very diffrent. Many are quite long typical Dj music, tough and funky but far from music that would sell on charts, most songs do not have any lyrics either. So if you think that most songs are simular to his 1# hit then you're wrong. "Necessary evil" is real rough, he's scratching a CD together with some backround beats. "Entra Mi Casa" a song with a good melody, funky beats and a female voice is also quite good. "Summertime" and "flowers" are both slow and dull, they are the exeptions of the otherwise quite rough album. "Alienz" is good "Boogie monster" and "Rock da spot" is allright too but nothing more then that. This Cd includs some interesting songs and Armand Van Helden music is something special i think you should take a closer look at, however not exactly a great album, maybe some re-makes of songs would make me like this one better.

Armand Does It Again.......2001-05-11

The last time I heard something from Armand that made me dance all night, was the single "The Witch Doctor". This Album is unbelievable. I loved almost every cut. Armand Van Heldon has done it again.

It stinks that I have to give this such a low rating, but the remixes on this single suffer from a serious lack of likeability...the radio edit and the original mix are the only two tracks on here worth owning. I was not impressed by the slow moving near lifeless Sergio Santiago mix, nor the trying-to-hard to make nothing happen tracks from Solid Groove...so long as you are just buying this for the originals, you won't be disappointed...They are great! However, if you are looking for some good remixes of this track...keep on looking because they aren't on this one.

I expected better remixes, but the original mixes are great!.......2004-09-01

I first heard this song off of a TV music station from Music Choice. This is a fun song. When that song was playing on Music Choice, I actually turned the TV up all the way, and as ridiculous as this may sound, I also went to change into my favorite clothes, went back into my living room and started dancing. That's how much I enjoyed the song. It was such a sweet song that I went and bought the CD single. The Radio Edit (3:27) and the Original Club Mix (7:49) are the best tracks. It's too bad that these tracks are the only good ones in this CD single. I expected to hear better from these remixes. The other mixes don't even include the bass from the first two tracks. The Serge Santiago Remix (9:10) is depressing and torturing. You hear the vocalist say "All I wanna do is get next to you" too many times! Plus, it sounds and feels slow even for a dance mix. The Solid Groove Hear My Rub (6:15) and Solid Groove Hear My Dub (5:55) aren't as bad as the Serge Santiago Remix, but are still bad. They're both boring, despite special effects and other things tweaked in the Hear my Dub. I would've liked to hear remixes with the bass from the original mixes. I probably wouldn't complain about these remixes if the bass from the original mixes was added to them. I'm sticking with the original mixes. Sometimes the original mix gets stuck in my head, but I wouldn't care if it is, just as long as it's this version and not any other.

Incredible single........2004-07-30

This is one of my favorite singles so far this year. This is the latest single for remixer /dj Armand Van Helden and this track comes off as a New Wave dance track. The basis for the song is 2004 Electronica music but the feel vocally is one of 1980's dead pan style that reminds me of the stylings of The Flirts and Vanity while in the Vanity 6 girl group. Childhood memories!!!!!
The mixes are all electro in vibe with the Serge Santiago mix being the most straight ahead house mix. All great mixes.
