5 out of 5 stars Bee Season is wonderful..........2006-06-03

Bee Season is a score that is remarkably relaxing. It's one of those scores that you just listen to on your portable CD player in your car, as your taking a long drive. It's so peaceful. The score is filled with fast paced strings that give it a fair beat. Piano mixes in with the strings to give it a pretty good sound. Ivy's "I'll be near you" is a wonderful slow song, that has beautiful lyrics and suddenly relaxes you. The music fits perfectly with the scene in the movie that its in. Don't miss out on this one folks.

5 out of 5 stars SWEET SOUNDS.......2006-05-19

Free-flowing as usual, George Kahn makes his music seem so effortless! His love of what he plays is rather evident. Check out those ivories! This collection of musicians is a smashing quintet! Eric Marienthal and Bobby Rodriquez are perennial favorites.

"Evan's Seven" is as smooth as silk with the intermingle of George's piano keys and Eric's sweet sax. "Freedom Vessel", the title song, is satisfying yet soothing. A certain smoldering tension exists in "Bill and Gil's Excellent Adventure". Eric's sax will blow the top of your head off and George's piano is creatively frenetic. Then add Bobby's trumpet to the mix and you have a wonderful experience that is over eight minutes long! George plays a touching tribute to Judy Garland on the piano in "Over The Rainbow". "The Garden" is a gorgeous finale with Bobby on trumpet and George on piano.

Once you are "hooked" on the music of George Kahn, you are a fan for life. But beware, this is a musician with a rare talent who knows how to pick an entourage to back him. Buy and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Review by ...........2001-03-14

OK, we are sickened by the amount of fun these guys arehaving. What's the matter with desolate guilt ridden music? Well, totell you the truth, it ..., so here we bring you some brassy jazzthat wipes the cool off the mirror and hazes it up with somethingincredibly hot. George Kahn is what the teeming listeners wouldconsider a `mature' composer and musician, in the sense that heincorporates what we here in the Land of Phrygia Musical Appreciationand Phenomenal Artists College feel to be the most intense, if not themost difficult, music to master in the world. Classical music hascadence, structure, and is imprisoned or freed by the conductor. Butwhen it comes to pure agility and stamina, Acid Jazz outshines anyother genre in the abilities of the artists. That's where the crucialelement comes in? Is it credible? For George, we would have to say no,it's not that credible. It's ... Incredible!

5 out of 5 stars Freedom Vessel.......2001-02-26

FREEDOM VESSEL by jazz pianist George Kahn, features trumpeter Bobby Rodriguez in a tight sextet format. Most of the original compositions are homages to the various influences in George‚s life, from Gil Evans>to Miles Davis. It‚s a straight-ahead treatment, if that‚s your cup of tea, though his interpretation of Somewhere Over the Rainbow, does skirt dangerously close to nostalgic sappiness (but I love that tune, so who cares). This is balanced out by a whimsical treatment of The Way

You Do the Things You Do. You can check George out online at http://www.MP3.com/georgekahn See for yourself.

3 out of 5 stars music for a slow afternoon.......2002-03-21

Channel Light Vessel are Bill Nelson,Roger Eno,Laaraji and Kate St John.I am supposing that if you have found this page then you know of at least one of these people and their work.I think this disc would be a welcome addition to the collections of fans of any of the participants.
I found myself quite delighted by "Automatic".The ebb and flow of the disc is just perfect, with the subtle yet intricate tunes working there magic effortlessly.
Perfect for quiet moments ,slow afternoons or rainy days.

5 out of 5 stars Very good colaboration........1999-03-26

For the fans expecting New Age and Ambient, trade marks of Laraaji and R.Eno this is not too close. Don't worry, probably you will find the best intimate atmosphere, supported from Kate St.John gently voice and Bill Nelson's guitar.I also recommend "Excellent Spirits" as a deeper continuity of this masterpiece.Just buy them!

5 out of 5 stars Ambient Supergroup Classic.......1999-03-21

The return of Bill Nelson is evident on this 1994 release. Kicking off with a criminally-ignored 3 minute slice of pop ambience, "Testify" has Nelson singing lead and playing wild bass, Kate St John singing background, Roger Eno's rollicking piano & gurgling synths, Laraaji's electric zither, and a brief but excellent Nelson guitar solo in the middle. This is followed by several instrumental tracks where the various members, including cellist Mayumi Tachibana, have their go with an ambient background. It's all luscious, gorgeous, and transcends the "ambient" and "new age" tags quite easily.

There's a couple additional vocal tracks, "A Place We Pray For" features Kate and "Thunderous Accordians" features Bill again, but they're less "pop" oriented. Intertwined are more instrumentals, all of which equally enjoyable slabs of ambient/chamber/new age charm.

I've owned this album since it came out in 1994 and have never tired of it. Normally I don't get into New Age stuff, but this is marvellous.

This band has another album released in 1996 called "Excellent Spirits". It's a bit different, less New Age/Ambient and more pop-oriented, but still quite beautiful even though the cellist isn't involved on that release.

Very few people have heard of this album, so hopefully this review will spur more people on to buy this enjoyable album!

well i must say that i was rather eager to review this cd. A whole generation has gone by since Joyce has made an album and oh how i have missed her. She has made a formidable return and as she states in the first song that she: "has been through some changes". I found the first seven songs flawless esp. I praise his name ,what the world needs now,and a new begining. the updated all in all is great however jeers to the horrible flute ridden trip-hop version of "come ito my life". One more note, if you get the import cd you will be blessed with 2 bonus cuts:save the children, and what the world needs now(jsp mix).Welcome back joyce and keep cranking out the great music! 4 1/2 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Great Mixture of Artists Yield Beautiful Music.......2000-07-25

Bill Nelson's skillful guitar blends well with Roger Eno's keyboards and Kate St. John's lyrics, giving a beautiful, lilting feeling of gentle music. This is not just background furniture music, going way beyond some of the ambient / new age sleepytime stuff on the market. Full rhythms and choruses highlight a quasi-instrumental sound you'll return to again and again.

Album Description

It's the name for a craft that carries you to the other side, but Death Vessel makes the trip a beautiful safari. Led by Joel Thibodeau (String Builder), the centerpiece is his soaring soprano voice. After watching him sing, you can walk down the street imagining the most disheveled of hobos bursting into pitch-perfect Puccini arias. Former Purple Ivy Shadows guitarist Erik Carlson (now of Area C) lends massive textures that immaculately support Thibodeau's guitar and voice. Recorded by Figgs singer and bassist Pete Donnelly, who makes a few musical appearances here, the album sounds like a classic record that might be gathering dust next to your great-uncle's old Johnny Cash albums, but is simultaneously an odd pastiche that doesn't seem to fit anywhere at all.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Still loving it........2006-09-11

After seeing Joel perform live at the local bowling alley a few years ago, I was in love. His haunting non-falsetto resonates days after seeing him perform live. He's since moved on to open for the likes of the Books and the legendary Os Mutantes at much larger venues... but his delicate songwriting and sweet heart-wrenching voice haven't changed. This album is a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Album of the year.......2006-06-08

That's it. Right on. Album of the year. At least MY album of the year. Released in 2004, and I'm still playing it weekly. Sea shanty inspired folk numbers mask themselves, move along, mutating into a combo with bluegrass. Evoking the feel of Sandy Denny & Nick Drake, as the same voice. For fans of the twang of classic country, the darker side of folk, and the clean bluegrass sound. A beautiful album.

5 out of 5 stars Creative funk.......2007-02-06

I bought this album after seeing the band live and have listened to it repeatedly ever since. You won't get tired of this one; inspired, original material that doesn't sound like anyone else. The groove - the funk - is always in your face. The sax and keyboard solos are great, also. Funk for the jazz fan.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Groove Syndicate breaks out in a big way. .......2004-07-20

I've been on the MGS bandwagon for a few years now, simply due to the raw power and complexity of their live show. I'm a big fan of jazz and funk, and I haven't seen a band that quite hits like they do. That said, their first, self titled CD was almost disappointing in that it didn't capture the energy the band typically exhibits.
Vessel, to contrast, is a high powered fusion of funk, jazz and soul. The disc opens with a body shaking bass groove on Exes and Hos, and doesn't let go. Longtime MGS favorites such as Code Brown, Bojungeles, Angel Rust and Mo' Time are captured here expertly. The rhythm section of Todd Herrington and Joel Denunzio drive this disc, keyboardist Daniel Clarke provides textures, and ex-Agents of Good Roots saxophonist JC Kuhl provides excellent melodic and solo ability. This album sums up MGS perfectly, and is my favorite release of this year so far.

If you're a fan of uptempo instrumental jazz and funk, pick up this record. It can't disappoint.

Album Description

Wilderness is an unconventional band from Baltimore, whose apparent musical pedigree stems from the likes of The Fall, This Heat, Savage Republic, Public Image Limited, and Joy Division - without sounding like any of them - and whose music is every bit as spiritual as it is visceral, as nuanced as it is overt, and as communal and all-embracing as it is culturally alienating and nihilistic. "Vessel States" is sure to fortify the critical acclaim (Pitchfork's Best New Music tag and one of Magnet's noteworthy albums of the year).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dark and brooding!.......2006-07-07

I didn't expect what I received from this album due to all the hoopla about the PIL/Joy Division comparisons. I like those bands okay and gave this a shot. It certainly has some elements from those bands, but I was blown away by its taut single mindedness and dark atmosphere. The vocalist gives it his all in a weird and chilling delivery. They sound like they're from the future. It's a all crispy guitar arpeggio's and a fairly dry drum mix. Wilderness' 'Vessel States' has a very insular sound and is a little unsettling. It's also my favorite record of this year so far. I'm sure most will find the vocals an aquired taste, but you have to respect a band going this far to create its own world. I hear their first self titled is just as good if not better.

5 out of 5 stars Luna meets the Edge...and good 'ol REM.......2006-04-16

...but they're so good comparisons to anyone else short-changes them. Great guitar riffs and bass enough to satisfy the craven...from the 'can't get enough' of emergency and its great opening guitar that just grabs you and won't let go to gravity bent lights kicking close...to monumentals hypnotic guitar line...enigmatic lyrics that add the right texture to every song...had REM continued along the path set by Murmur and Reckoning and met U2's edge in a musical dream they would have made this...thank god Wilderness did it instead ! Thanks to Waterloo Records in Austin for playing this...woke me up from a 6th street hazy walk--shook me right up...had to get it.

5 out of 5 stars wired for discourse.......2006-04-12

The adventure continues. What do kick flip inneundo and distorted polar sized portions of grind get you- more and more into the wilderness. Baltimore favs do awesome on ther 2nd release. More exploratory than oratory. More sonic stamping than stammer. I love this freaking band, you should too. Mild rock? Not.

Silvestrov has the uncanny ability to concentrate your attention on music that's almost entirely slow paced and rendered at levels that rarely rise above pianissimo. Nowhere is that gift more evident that in his Silent Songs, a cycle of 24 songs for baritone and piano with texts drawn from a wide variety of poets from Pushkin, Shelley, and Mandelstam to the less familiar, at least to American audiences (Tyutchev and Zhukovsky). The songs have a deceptive simplicity; the texts illuminated by chaste, lovely, instantly appealing melodies, but the musical journeys of each song have an adventurous complexity that reveals even greater depths with repeated hearings. To say these performances are sympathetic would be a gross understatement. Although Sergey Yakovenko is asked to sing sotto voce throughout, and in a cruelly high tessitura for a baritone, he is superb, singing with a commitment and inwardness that draws the listener in. Pianist Ilya Scheps has Silvestrov's unique idiom in his fingers, and his postludes, some of them extensive, are summations of each song's meaning. Silvestrov himself accompanies Yakovenko in the Mandelstam cycle of four songs, a radiant close to a set of ethereal beauty. --Dan Davis

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The most significant lieder cycle of the 20th century........2006-10-23

I've noticed that most significant lieder cycles are usually qualified as being "the [fill in the blank] version of Schubert's Winterreise." So Eisler's Hollywood Songbook becomes the American (or German, or Post-serialist, or even Socialist) Winterreise, and so on. In spite of how annoying this trend might be, I really think Silvestrov's Silent Songs deserves the title "The 20th-century Winterreise."

Why? No only is the cycle aching beautiful, but there lurk within it depths of what one might call extra-musical resonance as well. Silent Songs were composed after Silvestrov was expelled from the Soviet Composer's Union in 1974. His public career as a composer was over, and he turned to the ultimate "private" genre - the lied. What had once been the favoured parlour music becomes in Silvestrov's hands a kind of commentary on the nature of privacy itself - enforced privacy, in his case. Thus the emotions which each song here evokes run the range between amused introspection and despair, with lonliness colouring all. There are times when the feeling that these songs are truly "silent" - that we genuinely within someone's mind, listening to their every thought - becomes almost claustrophobic.

The engineers place the baritone's voice every so slightly forward, and what would normally sound like a mistake works to highlight the sense of uncomfortable closeness between the voice and the listener. This is ECM's finest release of Silvestrov's work, and that's saying a whole lot. Could we have the symphonies now, please?

5 out of 5 stars intimate in the extreme..........2004-11-18

...and that can be a wonderful thing. In the case of this recording, it's one factor that makes it one of the most moving and beautiful I've heard in some time.

One reviewer (I can't recall where I read it, sorry...) said that it felt as if Yokovenko was singing right into the ear of the listener -- and that's a very apt characterization. The notes by the pianist in the booklet recall preparing to perform the songs on the concert stage for the first time, in Moscow, in 1985. He cites the preparation and the performance as one of the happiest moments of his artistic life -- it shows in his performance, as well as in that of baritone Sergey Yokovenko. The opportunity to present a program such as this, with the challenges and rewards that it embodies, is a rare one.

The texts are from a variety of poets -- Pushkin, Baratynsky, Sehvchenko, Mandelstam, Yesenin and other Russians, as well as Western icons Keats and Shelley. Whether Russian or Western in their source, the pieces here are universally beautiful -- the translations are provided in the booklet (as usual with ECM releases, the packaging is first-rate), but this music speaks directly to the soul of the listener. The emotion it carries needs no translation.

As I listen to this recording, I can easily imagine that the music is being performed for me alone -- but I'll be generous and share it with everyone. I can't recommend this CD highly enough -- heartfelt thanks to ECM for making it available. I encourage listeners who are unfamiliar with Silvestrov's work to check out some of the other ECM packages of his music, such as REQUIEM FOR LARISSA; LEGGIERO, PESANTE; and METAMUSIK, POSTLUDIUM.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting, yet disturbingly comforting........2004-11-12

Silvestrov delivers power through the simplicity of piano and an introspectively shaky baritone. The message of the melodies preclude the need for translation--this music touches the heart and exemplifies the adage "music is the universal language". Yet, lugbrious and oftentimes languishing, the tenor of the recording is very melanacholy. But, the listener can somehow relate to the deep emotion of the composer. You can feel as if he speaks from his entire life and experience and expects closure. A few songs glimpse hope found in disaster (see track 9 on the first CD), but a complete attention to the entire recording renders satisfaction.
A fine mix of simplicity, genius, comfort, and haunting soul exposure. A great example of the depth of the Ukrainian spirit, as well as a tribute to their wonderful (and sometimes neglected)contribution to music.
