LONG VERSION EDITED.......2003-08-23

this import single has indeed rare 'this used to be my playground' versions. but i was a bit disappointed to find out buying this cd, that the long version of the song (track #3)is still edited. the whole version can be heard on the end credits of 'a league of their own' movie and the track# 2 which is unfortunately the instrumental version. the longer, vocal version of this song should have appeared on this cd. but anyway for a madonna fan, this is still a must have!!!

An Awesome Ballad From Madonna.......2003-06-26

Madonna returned to the music scene in July 1992 with her first new single in 15 months after a break in which she cunningly plotted away for her next sexual attacks on the world. The new song was the awesome ballad This Used To Be My Playground, and it peaked at No.3 in the UK and spent a total of 9 weeks on the chart. The song was also a massive US No.1 for Madonna, becoming her 10th US No.1 single, and her third of four in the 1990's.

This Used To Be My Playground opens up with a magical and enchanting beat that swirls around the mysterious arrangement. A keyboard signals the charming qualities of the song before it dies down and Madonna begins to sing the chorus and her first verse. "This used to be my playground. This used to be my childhood dream. This used to be the place I ran to, whenever I was in need of a friend, why did it have to end? And why do they always say 'Don't look back...keep your head held high, don't ask them why because life if short, and before you know, you're feeling old and your heart is breaking.' Don't hold onto the past, for that's too much to ask." The chorus then follows quickly and Madonna sways into her second verse. The song maintains its beautiful tempo and extremely emotional lyrics before breaking out into a fantastic violin solo. This is the best part of the song, and it makes this ballad a true classic. Madonna then repeats the chorus and the verses again and - even though she does it a lot - it never gets boring because this is the kind of song that everyone can relate to and be moved by. With usual Madonna ballads, the backing singers take over as Madonna's vocals die down. Right towards the end she sings, "The best things in life are always free. Wishing you were here with me." When she sings the last word - 'me' - Madonna's voice cracks a little, showing the emotion she puts into the recording of this fabulous song.

This Used To Be My Playground was the theme tune to the hit movie A League Of Their Own in which Madonna co-starred alongside the extremely annoying big-kid Rosie O' Donnell (did you see her on the Nickelodeon Kids Awards?!). The song was a big hit and so was the movie. The video to This Used To Be My Playground is quite good. We see a man turning the pages of a book, and the pages contain a picture of Madonna as she sings her song. The man turns the page as Madonna sings a new line to the song, and even though it sounds stupid, it works rather well. All in all, this is one of my favourite Madonna ballads along with Crazy For You, Live To Tell and Take A Bow. Essential.

Introspective and Nostalgic.......2002-10-21

The versions supplied here are perfect. The orignal that you've heard on the radio, an instrumental, and the long version with extra lyrics.

Aside from the movie that this song is from, the song itself is a nice look back at past friendships and growing old and saying good bye. A tear-jerker of a song, you will want to share this with you closest friend. Perhaps it will give you comfort in your beareavement.

The vocal blends are gorgeous. Almost angelic.

A Beautiful Song.......2001-04-17

This is one of Madonna's best songs which is why I'm giving it five stars. However, if you have "Something To Remember", which already has this song on it, there really is no need to buy this single unless you particularly want the instrumental version which is very pretty. Otherwise the tracks on this single really aren't any different than the version you'll find on "Something To Remember". There's an added chorus at the end of the second track, but that really is it. "Something To Remember" is a far better investment.

AMAZON'S FALSE ADVERTISING (as usual).......2004-02-29

This product does not include the above tracklisting. Instead you get the same version of "This Used to be My Playground" which can be found on Madonna's "Something to Remember" album. It does not include the extended movie version. And the only other song on this album is "Hanky Panky" a song from Madonna's "I'm Breathless" album.
All you get is a CD in a cardboard slipcover. After complaining to Amazon several times, they finally told me that they cannot get me the proper CD single with cover artwork. DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM if you are expecting what is advertised. This is not the way that this item is supposed to be distributed.
BUYER BEWARE. Amazon also distribute's Madonna's "Into the Groove" without case and artwork.

One of the best songs i've ever heard.......2003-06-02

We always expect great things from Madonna, but I must confess this song surprised me. At first, it didn't seem to be very atractive, it's not a catchy one, but when I realized what the lyrics were about I started looking at it in a different way.
This song make you think about your life and all the things that have hapenned to you (just as in the video). It's as if Madonna had written a song about us, and I think she did.
The single brings 3 versions of the song and the're all good, although the instrumental version may seem a little sadier than the album version.

Not as "Advertised"!!.......2002-12-19

i was TRULY upset when i received this cd. it WASN"T in a picture jacket, just in a cardboard sleeve! THEN, it has a DIFFERENT version of "Playground" on the disk, and the ONLY OTHER song on it is "Hanky Panky"!!!! NOT AS ADVERTISED!!!!

Not what is advertised..........2002-07-24

Don't get me wrong from the rating. I totally adore "This Used To Be My Playground" as well as "Hanky Panky". However, from the illustrations on this page, you are led to think you are getting one product, when in fact, you are receiving a different product. This single, is not actually a single. It's something called "Backtrax" that Warner slapped together with two Madonna singles on it to try and create some extra revenue. It comes in a plain cardboard slip and does not have the single artwork that is advertised at the top of this page.

If you are ordering this item to receive the actual "This Used To Be My Playground" single with artwork, don't. Order the other single. The single that contains the Radio Edit, the Extended or Long Version (not sure what it's called), and the Instrumental Version.

This product receives a rating of one from me based on the fact that it is false advertising. It does not come in a skinny single jewel case, it does not come with the cover you see at the top of this page. Do not buy this product if you're looking for the actual single. Completely false advertising.

Awesome Stringed Tribute CD!.......2006-03-16

Very well orchestrated and performed by the Da Capo Chamber Players. Are these guys for hire or what? Amazing! I'm now looking into their other works as well. Highly recommended!

1. madonna doesn't write music (she backs this fact up)
2. madonna co-writes songs. ie. she's not the main poet on her albums. she adds stuff to already-written lyrics. did you know "like a virgin" was originally intended for a man to sing? gotta love this pre-fabricated pop!

anyway, she's not a musician, but she is overproduced. she just sings "her" songs and dances along to them at concerts

I knew that the Da Capo Chamber Players released excellent tribute recordings of Björk and Radiohead, I was very curious and excited to hear what they'd do with Madonna's work.
Madonna has used strings in her music since her Like a Virgin album, but this cd explores even more the core of her music, which is quite a test, since people usually assumes she's more a celebrity than a real musician.
Madonna and chamber music? A funny thought, but here she passes the test. Even though one might argue about the choice of songs (it's a shame they selected more of her earlier material), the arrangements are really well written, staying true to the originals, yet revealing her skills as a songwriter and melodist.
One highlight: 'Ray of Light', full of sparkle and energy, just like in the original version.
