Released in 1973 after the dismal musical detour that was Sometime in New York City, Mind Games showed John Lennon returning to the emotional pop sounds of Plastic Ono Band and Imagine. But while the glorious title track (the album's only hit) was every inch a worthy successor to "Imagine," the rest of the songs were written off by most critics as half-baked experiments. In retrospect, most of them, while not classic stuff, are still better than the bulk of what passed for rock music in the early 1970s. "You Are Here" and "Out of the Blue" are definitely on par with Lennon's best solo work, while "Bring on the Lucie (Freda Peeple)" couches its political barbs in silly good humor. Even better is "Meat City," a rocker as wild and surreal as the "White Album"'s "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey." Wow, what a great sounding and FUN album!

Meat City almost knocked me off my sofa! After hundreds of listenings, I'm hearing tons of new harmonies, keyboard accents, great bass notes and crisp and clean sound altogether. Alright, this has always been a favorite John album of mine. I bought it new and grew to love it. This remastered version put the Plastic Ono Band IN my living room.

Out The Blue, sung with great gusto and feeling, is an unknown classic, give it a listen. John's attitude is relaxed and seemingly content, especially in Freeda People (Bring on The Lucy).

I know (I know) has great vocals displaying Lennon's 50s infulence.

You Are Here featues great harmonies and keyboard by Ken Ascher...I thought it was Nicky Hopkins playing.

Back to Meat City....what a lost A-side, in my opinion. Fun lyrics and a sizzling lead guitar. I'll always love this record..uhhh CD. God, I miss John Lennon...it really was the end of the innocence in life for me..

A mixed bag.......2007-06-20

I'm looking at some of these lyrics here, and for the most part I'm not all that impressed. Which is sad, because John's supposed to be good at writing lyrics. You wouldn't know by listening to songs like "Tight A$", "Aisumasen (I'm Sorry)", "Intuition", or "Meat City", though. Musically, there are also a couple bad ideas (an enormous choir on "One Day (At a Time)", pedal steel on "You Are Here"). So the best songs are the good ol' fashioned revolutionary ones: "Bring on the Lucie (Freeda People)", the wonderful title song; "Only People". And a couple of the above poorly-written songs have some merit: "Intuition" has a bouncy melody and interesting keyboards; "Tight A$", a slide guitar. And I do like the gentle, sensitive "Out of the Blue" and the almost Macca-like "I Know (I Know)". This is no better than Plastic Ono Band or even Imagine and Double Fantasy- it is a jumble of an album, after all. Just a moderately enjoyable one.

Remixed Magic.......2007-04-21

Wow! Wait until you hear this remixed and remastered Mind Games CD. You will not believe your ears. Mind Games was always a favorite Lennon album for me, even on vinyl. But I always felt some of the tracks sounded "muffled", especially "Mind Games" and the classic rocker, "Meat City". Well, crank up your stereos!! Now all these wonderful tracks sound crisp, clear and loud. You hear instruments and vocals that were lost in the original mixes - they were there all along, we just could not distinquish or seperate. Now the songs are full of wonderful sounds and harmonies - and in real stereo. I went back to the orignal CD issue to compare, and indeed many of the tracks sound like they were recorded in mono the seperation was so poor and volume so low.

This is a great Lennon CD and Peter Cobbin (Re-mix Engineer) at Abbey Road Studios has worked his magic once again (he also re-mixed the Plastic Ono Band and Imagine CD's). Just Fabulous!

Playing the Mind Guerilla.......2007-04-20

This mediocre but likable record by my favorite artist illustrates pretty handily the production crisis Lennon fell into after the 'Imagine' album, and which he never really got himself out of. On 'Plastic Ono Band' and 'Imagine' he conjured up a powerful, proto-grunge sound for the rock numbers and, for the ballads, an extremely effective conservatory-hall austerity. One wonders why he would ever trade this in for what came later. His rock'n'roll grew denser but more conventional; his ballads grew sweeter, slicker. Lennon's mid-70s albums verge on sounding producty.

But then, years after his death, albums like 'Menlove Ave.' and the 'Anthology' boxed set--as well as the bonus tracks on reissues like this one--began showing up. And they demonstrated a rather startling fact: after 1971, nearly every one of Lennon's songs sounds better as an alternate take or in demo form than it did as an official release. In the cases of some songs--like "One Day at a Time" and "Bring on the Lucie," not to mention a good half of 'Walls and Bridges'--the improvements are revelatory.

Of course, the subpar quality of 'Mind Games' and its immediate follow-ups is not entirely a matter of production. The ideas here are not as urgent as they were a few years earlier, after the trauma of the Beatles' breakup and the ecstasy of John's immersion in Yoko, so the lyrics are a touch more vague, sometimes a bit rote (this album includes his worst-ever couplet, "Like a UFO you came to me/And blew away life's misery"-- now there's a mid-70s line for you).

But, as always, this most serious of artists was searching. There's no shame in "failures" such as this album. (And there are at least two songs that require no apology--the soaring title track and the great-in-any-form "Meat City.")

Understatement ahead: Beautiful........2007-04-06

This album is arguably Mr. Lennon's best. I'm not going to shove my opinions down your throat, but I shall tell you why I believe that this is possibly John's loveliest collection.

"Mind Games," "Aisumasen," and "Out The Blue" are all sparkling love songs. The title track, perhaps best known, is totally exotic and cool. One of the best songs John ever wrote.

However, don't buy this CD just for "Mind Games"! This album ranks with the most thoroughly listenable in existence. From the sense of purpose that permeates "I Know (I Know)" and "You Are Here," uplifting the listener with every lyric, to the advice softly given by "One Day (At A Time)" and "Bring On The Lucie (Freda Peeple)," Lennon really delivers heart.

This CD release was worth it, too, for it has more of John Lennon's awesomely expressive drawings in the booklet as well as two great extra "home versions" (with the last one being a little annoying...but still good).

I also love the silence reserved for Nutopia that is included. Let us all take the time to belong in Paradise together. We CAN bring World Peace if we want it; if give of ourselves benevolently to everyone. AND WE WANT WORLD PEACE NOW!

I guarantee that everyone will like at least SOMETHING about MIND GAMES. After all, people do have ears. The music is less than twenty dollars, which is spectacular! (Considering that the pieces are all priceless.)

MoFi has updated yet another classic! Shawn Britton's mastering is as always - dead on, never betraying the initial vibe and intention of the ORIGINAL MASTER RECORDING, but delicously accentuating what is already there to maximum sonic fruition...

WORST CD I HAVE EVER PURCHASED BAR NONE!!!.......2004-12-17

This is awful stuff. I love all sorts of music and have many fine performances of Beatle covers. The arrangements on this CD, such as they are (if you can even call them arrangements),sound as though they were done by a demented monk. The music starts and stops for no apparent reason. Do not buy this unless you want to punish yourself...it is not only depressing but annoying, how did this get released? I have never listened to something so poorly performed, John Lennon would roll over in his grave if he heard this. If the rest of the the String Quartets efforts are of this caliber, I think they should be hung with the strings of their own instuments and good riddence! Once again, don't buy this unless you really want to make yourself ill...

These are great String covers, they chose the songs well. Sadly, there's very little material on here (at least it feels like it). If only they filled the disc with classic Lennon songs.

Mind Games.......2005-12-18

Not one of John Lennons biggest selling albums, Mind Games is still one of his better albums. Coming out right after Sometime In New York City its no wonder it didnt sell that well. No one expected much after that release. Mind Games was probabley Johns Most solid album to this point and it probabley was his best recorded as well. Mind Games is full of sentamental, social political, rock and roll lyrics, some of which are his all time best. this is more laid back then John Lennons other albums, nothing really to rockin' but thats ok because he makes it work and he does it well, very well in fact.

Mind Games is often overlooked because of its lack of hit singles. The only hit single was the opener and title track, 'Mind Games.' Even it didnt become a very big hit. Even though its a really nice song with reall good lyrics it isnt one of my favorites in fact it and 'Nutopian International Anthem' or NIA are my least favorite songs on the album.

With as good as this album is its not one of my favorite John Lennon albums. It's two laid back for me. The ballads out weigh the rockers and I dont like that. I love John Lennon for when he picks up a guitar and rocks out best. I love all his music but thats my favorite side of him, here you mainly just get him and the piano which he is good at and which I still like but most people cant sit and listen to that all the time, because its not that exciting.

'Meat City' is the song that closes the album, and in my openion its the best song on the album. Lennon picks up the guitar and rocks out. It reminds me why I love John Lennon and why so many where influenced by him. This song also reminds me why this isnt one of my favorite John Lennon albums. He plays very little guitar on this record. I love it when he plays guitar he is a very good player. Sometimes his playing even rivals the playing of his Beatle brother George Harrison who is concidered by players to be one of the all time best.

So to wrap things up this is a very good album, not John best but still a very good album. Its a little weak in some places but the good does out weigh the bad. I do think he could have done better but if he was happy with it when he released it then I guess thats all that matters in the end.

Keep on playing those mind games forever........2005-10-10

While this album is not quite a classic, it is still a solid album by John Lennon. "Mind Games" is, of course, a classic song that everyone remembers. But there are several other good songs, like "Out the Blue", "Only People" and "Meat City". And, of course, the "Nutopian International Anthem" just may be the best song Lennon ever wrote. John Lennon fans will probably enjoy this album.

You've got to try this !!!.......2005-08-26

Being a longtime Beatle fan, like most I find it a shame the band broke up when it did. Lennon himself said that for all those who still want the Beatles, just get their solo albums and play a song from each back to back.

Well one of the best listening pleasures I have ever found, and I could just listen to continuously... and if you have a cd player with a 3-disc changer you have got to try it.

McCartney's Red Rose Speedway, Lennon's Mindgames, Harrison's Living in the Material World cds in a 3 disc changer on shuffle play! All three discs are from 1973 and almost sound as if they were made to fit together... they are albums a bit more obscure (than say Imagine, or Band on the Run for example) and seem fresher because of it. But these 3 discs fit together so well it really is amazing! By this time, the 3 of them were acheiving their own individual sound and style musically and lyrically (the Paul songs are very Paul, George songs are very George, and Lennon's are very Lennon), but the songs are also still Beatle-esque in their own way.

It is like having a new triple CD of the Beatles from 1973... has enough top quality hits like Mindgames, Hi Hi Hi, Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth), and My Love. And has some great songs that would be given more weight if Beatle records, to add to the arsenal such as Meat City, That Is All, You Are Here, Mess (Live), Out The Blue, Hold Me Tight/Lazy Dynamite, Be Here Now, Only People, When The Night, Get on the Right Thing, The Light That Has Lighted The World ...

It is just so awesome... with the shuffle play you never know what is coming next. The songs sound great together, and hearing a John song, followed by a Paul, then a George makes them sound even so much better and fresh.

"Imagine," without the fizz.......2002-11-10

Coming after the, shall we say, dissappoinment that was called "Sometime in New York City," if Lennon had farted on his next album it would have been a welcome relief. He made "Mind Games" and herein lies the problem. The album is a true return to melody and lyrics worthy of Lennon, with several outstanding songs as good or better than anything on "Imagine." The problem is the album is plagued with mediocre production and a few substandard songs that once you've finished the album, leave you with a feeling of....dissapointment.
"Mind Games"--the song, shows just how brillant John can be lyrically. The backing is perfect for his wordplay. "Tight As" is a song where the production lets Lennon down. The backing thunders along but you really can't distinguish anything. There's a solo in here somewhere but its barely audible in this mix. This kind of aborts any power this track could have had. "Aisumasen" is one of those love it or hate it kind of songs. It's long and slow and most people might not have the patience to really listen to it but I think its phenomenal. The clear sound, good singing, great feeling and maybe the best guitar solo on an individual Beatles record, make this a killer track. It's followed by "One Day at a Time." This is a nothing song. This is the kind of song they play in hospitals to keep patients sedated. It's that bad and totally out of character for Lennon. Maybe he stole it from McCartney. "Bring on the Freda" is supposed to be a rocker but it doesn't go anywhere. Also, the steel pedal guitar is prominent in the mix--did someone forget to tell Lennon the steel pedal guitar is not a rock 'n roll instrument? It's too prevelant on this album to its detriment. "Intution" has some really good words although they are wasted with music that is way to poppy. "Out of the Blue" is a just a good song, period. "Only People" is one of those let's-all-sing-this-together type of song and like "Lucie" it doesn't have the force it should. "I Know, I Know" while having some interesting work by bassist Gordon Edwards is another underrated Lennon classic. Its just a superb song. "You Are Here" is a nice acoustic, insignificant filler track with very little going for it. "Meat City," the closing song, would probably be my choice for highlight of the album. John just cuts loose. The songs is a balls-out rocker the way "Lucie" and "Only People" tried(and failed) to be. I would give it 4 stars but I have to deduct one star for poor judgement and mediocre production. If you want to buy this album, buy "Imagine," first.

Love it! Just love the whole thing..........2002-09-20

This album is extremely underrated, but I think a lot of John's work is seriously overlooked and unjustly criticized (I'm talking about solo. When he was Beatle John, it seems you just can't touch him). I kind of wish everyone would just love John Lennon's music, like people like TV or reading the paper. It just seems like it should be a normal, natural thing. But I guess not. The songs on here are really amazing. All of them. I give it 5 stars because when I got Mind Games, I wasn't expecting it to be like POB or Imagine or Double Fantasy, or even Walls and Bridges, or any of those John albums held higher than it. But, after hearing it a few times, I was amazed at how beautiful it is.

I love it more than W&B's and the songs on here are so heartfelt and beautiful. I Know (I Know) is absolutely gorgeous. One Day At A Time...perfect. The only song I would ever call "weak" is Only People. But that's only because of that chorus. Anyway, its gonna be remastered and I'm going to get it. Its totally worth it. I always said, the only thing Mind Games ever needed was to be remixed and remastered and its happening. Yay! I'll be listening to it for a long time, that's for certain.

The albums of ETERNITY X present a lot more than just one of the new Progressive heavy-metal editions, in a recently quite crowded genre (Both quantitatively and qualitatively). Wow.......2006-05-08

I believe Mind Games stands on it's own. It is a moving album with some heavy subject material. Eulogy is the song I want played at my funeral and my baby was conceived while "Endless Journey" played in the background. This CD holds it's own right as a masterpiece. it should not be compared to their 1997 album "The Edge" nor their 1993 release "Zodiac." These two album are unlike each other and unlike MG. ETX moves me like no other band...I urge you to get this album.

I had the honor of meeting Keith since he lives in my hometown and he was gracious and amongst the good guys of this world. From what I hear they are putting out more material and the band is reforming! Hallelujah!

The tribute to the 250th anniversary of Wolfgang's birth continues, and this two-disc set is perfect for those who want to like classical music and insist they can't. The 34 tracks sound familiar because they have been used in popular films, either as incidental music or as an important component of the score. And we're not just talking Amadeus, but films that you may be surprised used such memorable music ... Mission Impossible, There's Something About Mary, Runaway Bride, Trading Places, Miss Congeniality, The Living Daylights. The works are performed by the finest, including James Galway, Alban Berg Quartett, Riccardo Muti, Dame Felicity Lott, Sir Neville Marriner, Herbert Von Karajan and Martha Vineyard's Andre Previn. Pretty classy indeed.

Mixture of instrumental and vocal lends for a nicely balanced program which is easy on the ears. Mixture of upbeat tunes and slower. Moondance is killer.
