4 out of 5 stars Two of the Ventures' Best.......2006-03-23

Compilations of the Ventures' "Greatest Hits" are a dime-a-dozen and don't really represent the band's mid-1960s strengths. This CD, which collects two complete Ventures LPs from around 1965, showcases an exceptionally skillful instrumental band with a straightforward, fuzzy, almost garage-like sound. The Ventures were a popular band because they gave their audience exactly what they wanted - tough, straightforward instrumenal versions of popular contemporary rock songs. I think you will find this collection in particular a better introduction to what the band was really about at the height of its commercial success.

"Where the Action Is" is a fine LP, featuring several original tunes as well as covers of "Lies," "A Taste of Honey," and "Fever." It ends with a great version of "She's Just My Style, and is a solid example of what the Ventures typically accomplished in their usually abbreviated recording sessions. On its own it isn't essential, but it highlights what a typical Ventures LP sounded like.

"The Ventures Knock Me Out," on the other hand, is one of their absolute best and hardest rocking LPs. It was the Ventures' response to the British Invasion, and the Ventures include several songs that Brit rockers brought to the US in 1964 or 1965. Their cover of the Beatles' "I Feel Fine" is a relatively faithful one (down to the opening feedback and reverb) but the rest are considerably pumped-up. Relatively catchy but effete hits like the Zombies' "She's Not There" or the Searchers' "Love Potion Number Nine" are given the full Ventures' treatment. They are toughened, fuzzed-out cover versions that even those most skeptical of the British Invasion would welcome. In fact they have more in common with what harder Brit bands like the Yardbirds and Who sounded like than what most of the poppier bands delivered. It's amazing to consider that the Ventures probably knocked out "Knock Me Out" in less than a week!

The bonus tracks are nothing special. One Way Records seems to have assigned bonuses at random to their re-releases. "Superstar Revue" is an awful 1970s era track and the other songs are representative of the Ventures' earlier, more surf-oriented style.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this if you can!.......2005-11-06

Back when I was five or six ('65-'66), my Pop brought these two albums home, because he wasn't too happy with the way rock music was headed, yet didn't want to deny us kids of it. He'd had to deal with some guff from his dad about bringing home jazz records, so he had an idea about the parental resistance towards whatever was the latest music.
We were blown away! These guys were fantastic! The guitars were their own Mosrite axes and there's not a slouch among them. The drummer's talents are best displayed on "Gone, Gone, Gone".
Much later on I "appropriated" them and played them even though they were pretty well shot. Then one day in '96, I just happened to spy this double album CD at a record store and bought it without hesitation. I couldn't believe my luck! And to add to it, the sound quality is amazing! Since then my brothers have all bothered me to lend it to them. If you consider yourself a Ventures fan, you can't do without this collection- period. The price may seem a bit steep, but just one play will dispell any buyer's remorse.

5 out of 5 stars The Fabulous Ventures Still Knock Me Out.......2003-07-01

This two-fer is an example of The Ventures in their 60's prime, with "Knock Me Out" being one of their best albums, ( with "Out Of Limits" and "Walk Don't Run '64"). One of the great guitar instrumentals of all time, "Slaughter On Tenth Avenue", is included,(later covered by Mick Ronson), and is worth it alone.

The driving guitars are showcased in such outstanding tunes as Jackie DeShannon's "When You Walk In The Room" (with a lead guitar series that you will instantly recognize, later covered by Pam Tillis and Paul Carrack among others), Manfred Mann's "Sha La La", (one of my favorite cuts) and "I Feel Fine".

An original, "Mariner #4",surprised me when it first came out, obviously influenced by their earlier albums, but is a standout and an often missed classic.

"Where The Action Is" was an albumn hard to find, and to have it coupled with "Knock Me Out" made me buy it immediately, especially since I played the vinyl albums to death. "Taste Of Honey", (Herb Alpert), the title song, and their own "Action Plus" are among the better cuts.

The added tracks "The Savage", (Great Vintage Ventures) is good to have, and the "Superstar Revue" was an attempt at the disco and Gerry McGee era and is quite different from the rest of this CD.

A good price for the greatest instrumental group ever, whose influence is phenomonal. Why aren't they in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame???? It can't be because of talent, sales, or influence. As mentioned by other reviewers, the sound is very good, and is a worthy addition to your library, and a must for a Ventures Fan.

Good Listening.

4 out of 5 stars The Ventures are the kings of instrumental rock!.......2000-09-27

This was the second Ventures CD I ever bought. The 2-LPs-on-1-CD format grabbed me. Plus I wanted to have "Slaughter on 10th Avenue" and "I Feel Fine" [a Beatles cover]. So I ordered this CD, and liked it immediately after I put it on. First of all, the sound quality is excellent stereo with great separation. Next, the performances are simply awesome.

The Ventures are so much fun to listen to; it makes you want to go out there and play those songs yourself! Just about every song is extremely listenable. The covers of hits of the day are fun (I Feel Fine, Gone Gone Gone, Hang On Sloopy, Oh Pretty Woman, etc.).

The first 2 of the three bonus tracks are in mono. "The Savage" was a B-side. The second, I don't know about. The third shouldn't even be on the CD - it's some disco thing from the 70s. But otherwise, it's a great CD to play at parties of whatever. Buy it now. Excuse me for being a salesman.

At long last, there's someone who's getting people to sit up and notice the saxophone's capacity for bluesy fun: Sax Gordon. Gordon's second enjoyable feature album has a gale wind rushing out of his metal horn's bell. This Boston-based musician wants to transport listeners (and himself) back in time to smoke-filled dives where sax supermen Big Jay McNeely and Gatortail Jackson screeched and wailed while lying on their backs and kicking their heels in the air. In that spirit, Gordon pushes hard on opening track "90 MPH," an obscure funk tune, and doesn't let up till the fade of an original called "Crawling Home." Go hear "Speed Rack," where Gordon cuts loose with a vengeance. He puts over "Bug Hunt" with a swaggering confidence that's equal parts seriousness and screwball histrionics. Gordon has total command of the horn's high and low registers, from stratospheric shrieks to well-deep rumbles. His enthusiasm is boundless. World-class guitarist/album producer Duke Robillard lends the saxophonist expert support on all 13 tunes, sometimes offering well-organized solos in the vein of Elmore James and other heroes. --Frank-John Hadley

        4 out of 5 stars beautiful songs.......2007-05-09

A welcome reissue in CD format from old LP's of Carpenters compositions : song cycles of very well known lyrics. Particularly fascinating are the renderings of poems from "Gitanjali", a collection of poems by Rabindranath Tagore in English translated from original Bengali; a work that got Nobel prize in 1913 (Not the Pullitzer prize as mentioned in th accompanying text). The songs on lyrics/poems by other poets, all americans are just as beautiful. Well done.

5 out of 5 stars A flawless and fascinating recital.......2005-04-14

This 2-CD set by soprano Carole Bogard is an absolute must-have for lovers of American songs, song recitals in general, or great singing. Culled from three long-out-of-print LPs and some performance tapes recorded for broadcast in Europe, it includes songs by Carpenter, Flanagan, Copland, Rorem, and the little-known Richard Cumming and John Woods Duke. And yet, there is not a single weak track on the entire set. Every song is interesting (something that cannot be said for many similar recitals recorded today), and each and every song is performed with musical acuity and an attention to words.

Particularly interesting, to me, were the songs by John Alden Carpenter. Largely neglected by modern singers and scholars, Carpenter wrote what many feel is the most successful fusion of classical music with jazz, the ballet tone-poem "Skyscrapers." It had the misfortune to premiere in 1924, the same year as Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue"; but whereas "Rhapsody" was more of a pastiche, "Skyscrapers" blends the jazz and classical aspects flawlessly, producing an exciting and well-crafted work that deserves a wider audience.

The Carpenter songs presented here are not jazzy, but they do reveal a greater depth of feeling and originality in construction than one hears nowadays from the songs of Andre Previn or Jake Heggie. And the other pieces are equally excellent.

I highly recommend this album, especially for Sunday afternoon or summertime listening...between the excellence of the songs and the excellence of Bogard's singing, you just melt into the music and become one with the warm, intimate feeling that this recital engenders.

Walk Don't Run, Vol. 2 is titled after "Walk, Don't Run '64", their hit surf-style remake of their 1960 hit. "Diamond Head" was another single released from the album. It's a great tune, but it wasn't a hit. The rest of the album features the group's usual mix of original tunes and cover versions of recent hits. The group used a lot of fuzztone guitar on this album, to good effect. The covers are all good, but the original tunes are really exceptional. "Pedal Pusher", "The Creeper" and "Rap City" are great (the latter being based on the classic piece "Hungarian Rhapsody", get it?). A really strong album by the Ventures.

The Ventures Knock Me Out features the hit single "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue". The rest of the album is the usual mix of cover versions of recent hits and original tunes. Fuzztone guitar is again featured, although not as much as on the previous album. The covers are solid, and the originals are good, with the best original probably being "Bird Rockers". This is another strong album, albeit not as good as Walk, Don't Run Vol. 2.

5 out of 5 stars Two Great Classics!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-05-25

Not all Ventures albums are classics. Wild Things, Guitar Freekout, and Go are not classics. (still sound great, but not classics) For a Ventures album to be a classic, it doesn't have to have any major hits on hit; example: Telstar. Some classics are Walk Dont Run Vol 1 , Let's Go, Ventures In Space, Fabulous Ventures, Hawaii Five o, and the two albums here:

          WALK DONT RUN:

This album starts off with one of their best covers ever, House Of The Rising Sun. It's definitly more tight than The Animals' version. And next, is my favorite Ventures song, Diamond Head. Its got such a great drive and melody. The Ventures do a good job "rocking" up Night Train, as mostly associated in a jazz setting. Peach Fuzz and Rap City are similar, but Rap City is more of a remembered tune by The Ventures. Obviously this contains Walk Dont Run 64', which is even better than the first version, it even made the charts. Those are the only standouts.

          KNOCK ME OUT:

This album has the best covers by The Ventures ever recorded. I Feel Fine, Love Potion Number Nine, and When You Walk In The Room, are some of them. They were also all featured on The Ventures Live In Japan album. The famous Slaughter On 10th Avenue, is also featured here. She's Not There amd Gone Gone are my favorite. Don Wilson's original, Mariner 4 is a pretty impressive compostion. Overall, this album is thourougly enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars WALK DON'T RUN '64 / "VENTURES KNOCK ME OUT" ARE THEIR BEST!.......1998-06-14

If you are a Ventures fan and grew up with their music as I did, then you will probably agree that these two albums are most likely the two BEST they ever recorded!!! "Masterpieces" would be a good description!! If you don't have these two albums in your collection.... your collection is incomplete!
