About the Artist
Alex has always been immersed in music and in his youth sang in the Durham Cathedral Choir for four years, he is also an accomplished cellist and pianist and received a musical scholarship in his teens. It was four years ago that he turned his talent to all things electronic and Incommunicado is a culmination of this work.

Signed to Soma in 2004, he first came to prominence with his two remixes of Funk D’Void’s ‘Way Up High’, later came his twisted re-rub of Envoy’s ‘Move On’ and his debut Soma release ‘Chica Wappa’ He has already gained a fantastic reputation from these and his ‘Simple Things’ twelve on cool German label Vakant.

Intensely good........2007-07-28

Although 'Lost in Landscapes' is now relatively old news for Holy Roman Empire, having released their debut album, 'The Longue Duree' in June, this EP is absolutely unmissable.

Despite opening with the comparatively easy going 'Gaper's Delay' and 'Guards Off', the remaining tracks on this six-song CD are darker and heavier than much of the album. 'Your Side' is bass-heavy and infectious, the soaring guitars of the earlier tracks replaced with a more muted sound led by t times almost growled vocals. 'Topography', from which the title of the EP is taken, borrows from the lower, darker vocals of 'Your Side' and takes it further to a pensive, at times almost desperate cry before dropping abruptly to a fade out of distortion.

'Ways to Save Our Lives' immediately blasts back and seems almost inconceiveable as the same band who would later release 'The Longue Duree', except for its haunting vocals which will later be echoed on 'Shatter Historic', although they are at this time supported by a much stronger sound from the four other members.

Closer 'Pony Express' is one of Holy Roman Empire's strongest tracks, showcasing both Emily Schambra's incredibly powerful and controlled vocals and the capabilities of her remarkably talented and seemingly intuitive band mates; this track, like many of their others, has an ability to lift a listener's mood and carry it through as it rolls with the sentiment of the song.

'Lost In Landscapes' is definitely unmissable and by the chugging crescendo at the end of 'Pony Express', you'll be wondering where the rest of the album is - this is far too good to be a debut EP.

this is the smoothest electronic album i've ever heard. it NEEDS more recognition. this record serioulsy raises the standard of electronic albums...its pretty damn flawless.

Brilliant work.......2005-05-19

A brilliant, consistent album that concentrates on slick, fat, minimal beats. Has a deep, almost dark, feel to it Obviously not designed for the dancefloors of Ibiza or the popular crowd.. more for personal listening..
Well produced all round with some variety, including vocals. If you like detroit/deep house or electronica, you won't be dissapointed here!

Maander gets a facelift.......2005-10-26

this German post rock group makes splendidly hyponotic music that mesmerizes the listener with it's jazzy repetition. the pieces on Incommunicado are improvisational musical sketches from the group's Maander album. while that record was a bit more cold and detached, Incommunicado takes the music to a darker and deeper depths. it's far too active to be ambient, but it does have a certain drone quality...but that drone is usually interupted by squawking saxaphones, bustling drums, and screeching violin jumping out with short, calculated free jazz outbursts. this technique could get a bit stale and a little worn out by the album 's end, but things are kept on a tight leash and before you know it, the album is over. it's an entertaining and compelling musical journey that shows alot of daring and adventerous thinking. and while not quite as rewarding an album as Maander was, it's nice to hear a band breaking down the structures of their own songs and toying with them as freely as they feel the need. it's open season for interpretation...and you're invited along for the hunt.
