In its own words, the Recording Academy is "a visionary group of music professionals and label executives." Unfortunately, as is made painfully obvious by this uninventive Grammy R&B/Rap Nominees 2001 collection, the Academy's collective eyesight is myopic. Given that label execs like Lyor Cohen (Def Jam) and Tommy Mottola (Sony) sit on the Recording Academy's executive council, it's no wonder that the list of nominees reads like an old boys' network patting itself on the back. Included here are vocabulary-challenged dog enthusiast DMX, aging multimillionaire/prototypical gangsta Dr. Dre, and would-be seductor R. Kelly. In the rap arena, the Academy ignores much of the best work of 2000, such as independently released, succulent albums by the likes of Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek, Blackalicious, and Zion I, and the risky major label work of rhyme genius Ghostface Killah. Eminem, a white boy's wet dream and the Grammy's bid for controversy, figures prominently in the mix, however. On the R&B side of things (where the 2000 pickings were slimmer), the only really noteworthy albums of the year, D'Angelo's Voodoo and Jill Scott's Who Is Jill Scott, get the nod--and so do gaudy panty-raider Sisqo and career tearjerker Toni Braxton. Nobody hates a cliché more than a conscientious record reviewer, but the fact is there are no losers on Grammy Nominees 2005. Though not all the acts represented here walked away with a golden statuette for their efforts, many including Alicia Keys, Los Lonely Boys, and Maroon 5 did, and the ones that didn't handily demonstrate why they earned the nod. Gretchen Wilson represents all that's right with modern country via her inescapable "Redneck Woman," and the genre jumble of relative newcomers Kanye West, Joss Stone and Josh Groban likewise make the case for keeping the radio dial spinning. Older listeners are the real winners here, though: Brian Wilson, Elvis Costello, Prince and U2 pull former awards-show junkies into the present and confer generational props at the same time. -Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:

2.3/10.0.......2005-07-13
Tracy Chapman, "Give Me One Reason"
In a stunning move, they put their best foot forward with this sparse acoustic melody. Don't count your eggs before their hatched, though, because Chapman's song here has quite a lack of inventiveness to it; how many times can you say "give me one reason" in one song before you put even your most mindless music listeners to sleep?
The Motive: Cheap acoustic filler, not to mention it lulls the listener into a false sense of security. If only the rest of these songs were as mediocre!
Eric Clapton, "Change The World"
What has happened to Clapton's talent for well-composed lyrics matched with really spectacular guitar solos? Has the old man let the impotency he suffers in his unmentionables (due to the smoking of one too many Thai sticks in his early youth, no doubt) creep into that cranium of his? I hate to have to tell you this, but "Change The World" is noxious pop ditty of little substance and even less style.
The Motive: Once listeners have realized that even Clapton has traded in his musical ability for the widespread acclaim of the hordes of tasteless music listeners, they'll accept that this is indeed the day the music has died.
Celine Dion, "Because You Loved Me"
I wish I could convey to my fellow reviewers how much I despise this song. Dion's success is due entirely to the musical junta that has propped her up, placed her onto the music scene. Do not be fooled; she has no song-writing talents, and most of her voice is due to the high-tech frills of a modern music studio.
The Motive: This is a clear attempt to make baby boomers forget there were people like Joni Mitchell and Janis Joplin around when they were young. Neither of these song-writers would dare have the audacity or superficiality to put a song like this out there. It's a quick-fix solution for the loss of these vocalists that has inspired the musical world to laud Celine Dion's "talent for music."
Alanis Morisette, "Ironic"
I hate Alanis Morisette. There, I said it. My younger sister could out-sing her, and I could come up with better lyrics in my sleep. How obvious can you be to point out the ironies of life while never saying anything meaningful about it? Further, Alanis has one of the worst voices ever to disgrace the music industry. It's a nagging kind of whine of a yell that convinces you that she must be a much bigger bitch in real life. Her husband deserves the kind of pity I can't afford to shell out.
The Motive: Quite likely the motive here is to destroy the listeners' once fine-tuned auditory nerves.
Smashing Pumpkins, "1979"
A mellow song about nothing more than relaxation... and drug culture. Although the Pumpkins should be applauded for their work on Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness (one of Pumpkins' lesser albums, though light years beyond this compilation), this is not one of their better songs on that record; it isn't quite blessed with the boldness and melodic strength of a typical Pumpkins' song.
The Motive: A paltry attempt to convince the music-listening public that this is the best the Pumpkins could do. A laughable attempt to- my advice is to blow your next paycheck on a factory sealed set of The Aeroplane Flies High, and never look back.
Garbage, "Stupid Girl"
A good song, in its way. On this track, Garbage is found condemning a girl who finds no value in the world. If you've paid attention to pop music in the last 20 years, you've probably heard songs like this a dozen times, but Garbage stylizes this version of that formula by leaving plenty of musical grit on the husk of the song.
The Motive: The Grammy institute's attempt to hustle the self-proclaimed musically rebellious into the fold.
Jewel, "Who Will Save Your Soul?"
I feel rather bad for young girls who followed Jewel's every move, bought her every cd, postered their rooms with pictures of her face... and then heard Intuition while rolling down the road in their Honda Civic one day. Probably they cried themselves to sleep, distraught that yet another one of their favorite singers had prostituted themselves in attempt to win the adulation of the masses. Of course, by that time, the young girl had turned into a college girl, and as you probably know, college is the sexualization (rather than the socialization) of the individual.
Anyways, this song here has Jewel's typical pre-0304 innocence to it; a song about making it through the day, penny by penny; though whether is has any musical virtue is debatable. It's catchy enough, but suffers from the over-produced feeling so common in 90s pop albums.
The Motive: If the song title isn't obvious enough, this song was nominated in a rather poor attempt to win the spiritually obtuse; existential Christians and the like.
No Doubt, "Spiderwebs"
I actually liked this song when it came out. Innocous as it is (a song about answering machine messages), it's actually the only song you can dance to on this album (without being ashamed of yourself, that is). Characteristic of early No Doubt, this song has a well-paced tempo that divulges into a slow kind of pop-punk serenade near the end; this is perhaps its only weakness, since the slowness gives the song an uncomfortable awkwardness- they should have ended the song with the same tempo.
The Motive: See the motive for "Stupid Girl"
The Tony Rich Project, "Nobody Knows"
If this song makes you cry, I have to tell you: I can't be your friend. Only a self-conscious bastard who thinks he is a "sensitive soul" could cry while listening to this (in fact, I'm betting one of the few people who cried while listening are the people who composed it!) Unfortunately though, that's pretty much the only purpose this song can be suited for; it has no other musical scope than that. It's actually an entirely droll, uncomfortably benign song, useless to anyone other than those mentioned above.
The Motive: Truthfully, I don't understand why the Grammy Award people would nominate R&B's attempt at emo, unless there is some big market for emo kids who like R&B that I am unaware of.
Leann Rimes, "My Baby"
Songs like these are a dime a dozen, and if I had a four-track in my basement, I'd probably spend a lot of time trying to parody them: "my baby is a tuna fish sandwhich, my baby is a cool iced tea, makes me feel like a slow cool summer." They're also intensely annoying.
The Motive: It's the only "country" song on the record, thus another attempt at showing the listener that this is good as it gets in the country category... Ryan Adams, anyone?
Toni Braxton, "Un-Break My Heart"
With all sincerity; the only people I could see loving this song are precarious co-dependents who like to roll around in a fetal positions on their hard wood floors all night. For the healthy or those who aren't insane, this song can be easily discerned as distasteful and terribly unoriginal.
The Motive: The Grammy nominators should be ashamed at foisting this upon the music-listening public. After Leann Rimes, they're probably thinking they need to return to the same sentimental drivel the rest of the album over-flows and leaks with.
Shawn Colvin, "Get Out of This House"
A stupendously awful song. There's almost nothing other than chorus; imagine the title repeated about 30 times, with a bit of extremely uninventive lyric filler, a bit of hoarse-sounding harmonica, and overdubbed guitars.
The Motive: I am telling you, there is no way in hell the Grammy people would nominate this except to destroy any remaining hope for a good song.
Gloria Efestan, "Reach"
Much like the Celine Dion track, but with a more convincing melody, and worse, more superficial lyrics. This makes yet again, for a very uncomfortable match.
The Motive: "Some days are meant to be remembered..." Agreed. Remember this one as "the day the music died."

Flashback to Nineteen Nine Five.......2004-03-13
1.Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men"One Sweet Day"A-.Beautiful,that is the only word to describe the powerful and masterful work.No wonder it was #1 for 16 Weeks in that year.
2.Coolio feat. L.V."Gangsta's Paradise"A+.This bangin' summer track was THE best song of 1995.Right from the chilling beat to the deep lyrics, this song is what rap should be.Surprising that the Academy was bold enough to give this a Record Of The Year nod.
3.Joan Osborne"One Of Us"A-.She may have been forgotten, but this song is easily a classic.Everyone knows the words to this inventive and inspired theological track. It does pose a very good idea about God.
4.Seal"Kiss From A Rose"A.The song may be ungainly in construction, but it is graceful in delivery. It is one of those songs that just plain resounds with you and uses some brilliant "images".
5.TLC"Waterfalls"A.Since Lisa Lopez has passed a way the group is in danger. The is one the best R&B songs of the '90s.The message seems verey heartfelt whlie the lyrics and horn arangments provide a perfect vehicle for it.
6.All-4-One"I Can Love You Like That"A.They may have been second compared to Boyz II Men, but this a superb and perfect slow dance song.Very well done.
7.Michael Jackson"You Are Not Alone"A-.In the midst of all his legal troubles, here is reminder of his talent.MJ singing R.Kelly's emotional lyrics make this a terrific song choice.
8.Alanis Morissette"You Oughta Know"A.It's no mystery why Alanis was such a huge hit with everyone. This song shows the kind of rage and straight forward attitude most females don't have. Truly a one of a kind song.
9.Brandy"Baby"A-.The song shrinks in comparison to "The Boy Is Mine" and "What About Us?",still it is very catchy and slick in it's production.
10.Hootie & The Blowfish"Let Her Cry"B.When "Cracked Rear View" sold 12 Million copies,no one predicted them to be on the bottom of the bargain bin now. This song is not original or spectacular, but it delivers what it promises to.
11.Shania Twain"Any Man Of Mine"A-.This early track from Shania may not have been her best, but it shows true talent and a lot of potential as an artist.
Bottom Line:****.A perfect album, shows that sometimes less can be more(it only has 11 songs). Grammy got it right way back in 1995!

Simply Wonderful.......2004-11-17
An essential for Music lovers, but could they have waited ?.......2003-12-29
Ok, how do you get off not putting Barbra Streisand on a GRAMMY CD ? She has won (if my memory serves me right) more then 9 GRAMMIES and has been nominated for tons more. And Toni Braxton. "Another Sad Love Song" Won best song and she got best new artist.
they also didn't include U2 or Phil Collins. I'm sure thy've won something. I cannot believe (but i am thankful) they didn't put any of Britney Spears'GRAMMY winners on there. And I think they could have waited for a couple of years and put of killer tracks like "Fallin" by ALicia Keys and "Don't Know why" by Norah Jones.
But I kinda think that the focus of this CD was on the "GRAMMY Hall of famers." Ella Fitzgerald. Louis Armstrong. Duke Ellington. Peggy Lee. Among others, serve up a nice classy feel amidst the modern pop and rock beats.
All and ALL, if they had put "All the best" on here we would have had a ten CD pack people !! and who knows how much that would have cost. this one is already a little steep. But I think its worth every penny.
I really think this is great. Its defines the term something for everybody and may help bridge gaps between Teens and parents. It definataly expanded my musical horizon.
Now all I need to do is write GRAMMY and request "GRAMMY:MUSIC FROM THE NEW MILLENIUM." They might need to wait a few years before they have all the material necesarry for a stellar project like that !!
Nice job!.......2000-07-12

This CD by Scott Martin throws a lot of flavors into one skillet. Scott grew up in a musical family (in fact, most of them play on this CD) and was influenced by all the music played in the house. His father plays trumpet and was into big bands and Louie Armstrong. His mother played string bass and was into classical and Aretha. His brothers were into bebop, funk, and everything in-between. Then he and his brothers got the gig with Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band and Scott was there for over 12 years, playing all over the world and getting exposed to all kinds of latin music. Tito, Machito, Chombo Silva, Mongo not to mention cumbia, meringue, salsa..... Throw this all into a cooking pot and you have "Menudo & Gritz" Scott Martin's latest CD. Urban Music: 2000.......2005-04-01
(1) Aaliyah "Try Again" A-. There's a really nice undercut of hip-hop here, which gives the song alot of it's edge. Aaliyah's voice adds conviction to make the lyrics sound passionate, and add some depth to them. Proof that not all R&B has to be sad; you get completely wrapped up in Timbaland's production.
(2) Erykah Badu "Bag Lady" B+. Normally, I'm not a very big fan of her work; I find that her style drags out any emotion she attempts to create. Yet this song works because of the beautiful, heartfelt lyrics. Her voice lacks the impact that is expecting in R&B, but is suitable for the feelings of sadness which the song inspires.
(3) Toni Braxton "He Wasn't Man Enough" A-. A strong, felt R&B song, Darkchild's production makes it one of her best; in the same league as "Un-Break My Heart". Darkchild's beat combined with Toni's fiery voice and style creates a winning combination for the listener.
(4) Kelly Price "As We Lay" B-. Not a bad song, just one that seems a little two standard. To be fair, Kelly Price does have a fine, classy voice, but she doesn't have much material to sing. This is a pleasant song, with a nice retro feel, that lacks the edge found in today's best R&B.
(5) Jill Scott "Gettin' In The Way" B. Jill Scott starts with average material, but doesn't settle for it. Her voice and style is fiery and distincive enough to give the track some new life. She sings this sing with conviction, yet the listener never fully gets caught up in it. That aside, this should still be heard for the skill and production it contains.
(6) D'Angelo "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" C-. His debut LP, "Brown Sugar" (1995), was highly overpraised, and so is his new material. The attempt to make a retro style R&B song goes nowhere here, as his voice is very irritating with random highs and lows. THe beat starts out somewhat interesting, but we eventually realize that the song has nothing to say.
(7) Joe "I Wanna Know" B+. In contrast to track #6; this is a retro R&B track which works. The material is as old as time, yet Joe's classy, polished voice make it sound convincing and touching at all times. As they say: a very good singer can make an old song sound new; and that's what he does here.
(8) R. Kelly "I Wish" A. We all know that R. Kelly can make very good sex themed songs, but we often forget how beaufitful his music can be as well. At first we think that "I Wish" is just about an ex-girlfriend; then we listen closer and realize what the story really is. It's not easy to make an R&B song with this type of content, but he pulls it off fantastically. The modern edge mends very well with the song.
(9) Brian McKnight "Stay Or Let It Go" A. "Back At One"'s title track was the big hit, but this ws the best song. Everything about it works so well to create a deep, powerful, touching R&B ballad. The beat is so peaceful that it's tear inducing and Brian's voice carries much depth and impact.
(10) Sisqo "Thong Song" A+. Yes, the song is a naughty sex themed anthem, but it excells in that area. The lyrics, however brief, are very catchy and the beat is darn infectious, as it plays in your mind well after. This song also happens to be the sexiest R&B tune in years. Everything works so well that this crosses over into rap and pop as well. This is mainstream music at it's best.
(11) Common "The Light" A. Common is hands down a true MC. Just like Bone Thugz-N-Harmony and 2Pac, he is able to create rap with message and purpose, yet keep his street credentials as well. Those who thing all hip-hop is negative should listen to this intelligent rap about how to make a relationship work. A light and refreshing breeze for the genre.
(12) DMX "Party Up (Up In Here)" A-. Everything about this song just plain works. The beat is menacing, the lyrics are hardcore through out and DMX's flow never steps wrong. DMX may have developed a formula for his music, but it's hard to complain when it works so well. Put this next to "What's My Name" and "Fame", and it's clear to see how unique his music is.
(13) Eminem "The Real Slim Shady" A+. Here's an artist who always does his own thing and stands out from the crowd. This is a hands-down brilliant rap song with umapologetic, biting, hilarious lyrics that carry a bold message. There will never be another Eminem, and that's a relief. "The Real Slim Shady" is THE best song of 2000, and the still young millennium.
(14) Mystikal "Shake Ya Ass" B-. For every good quality about this song, there is a bad quality. As an angrier version of James Brown's style; it's sorta entertaining, but that is only the surface. In the end Mystikal's voice is not very appealing to the ear, and the material, while fun, is really about nothing. There was much better rap than this in 2000.
(15) Nelly "Country Grammar (Hot...)" A. Not only was this Nelly's wonderous debut single, but it was also opened the door for evry "Mid-west rapper". The sound, flow and lyrics are like nothing we've ever heard before and that's what most rap is lacking. Even the chorus, with it's R&B sample, sounds new and refreshing. This is a catchy, light and highly entertaining debut.
(16) Beastie Boys "Alive" B. Not the most spectacular work of their careers, but a suitable one. It isn't really about anything at all; it's just a nice little showcase for the Boys voices and proves that they still have what it takes in the rap industry. By no means a brilliant song, yet it has some enjoyable charms.
(17) Dr. Dre feat. Snoop Dogg "The Next Episode" A. A perfect example of what "gangsta rap" is really about. The lyrics are tough and explicit, yet the track is really two rappers having a good time. Brief and catchy; this song makes no intention to have depth, as it provides a showcase for two great rappers at the top of there game.
Bottom Line: ***1/2. There are a few snags on the album, yet they get shoved aside by the really good ones. In the end, this is a very good summation of 2000 R&B and hip-hop genres. Most of the essentails are included on the album. The only question the album raises is, why did they discontine the "Grammy R&B/Rap Nominees" series?

Great bang for the buck!.......2001-10-05
This album is great and I listen to it all the time. Many of the songs were played a lot on radio so some may be tired of hearing them depending on what radio you listen to. I, for one, listen to mainly CDs and watch MTV. I don’t listen to radio due to too many crappy songs and too many commercials.
If you want another good R&B album I recommend the 2000 Soul Food – the series CD. Great R&B and good bang for the buck.
