If one's notion of "world music" promises a touch of the exotic and indigenous, often overlooked is the fact that the influence of western pop music has seeped into every corner of the globe, creating a hybrid that's often more than merely the sum of its influences. Theater vet Brightman steps into that pan-cultural hall of mirrors here, wedding her fascination with the music and rhythms of the "forbidden places" (the title's Arabic meaning) of the Middle East to her own oft ethereal vocal charms and rock-solid sense of drama. And if the diva's equally sound crossover sensibilities (and that of longtime producer Frank Peterson) sometimes mire it in familiar world-beat pastiche, Brightman's charmed muse manages some transcendent moments nonetheless. Her musical borrowings (Borodin for the title track; Puccini's *Madame Butterfly* for "It's a Beautiful Day") are as compelling as her choice of collaborators: classical violin star Nigel Kennedy and Iraqi vocalist Kadim Al Sahir add compelling touches to the weary timeliness of "The War is Over." The musical influences range from Europe across the Mediterranean and as far East as the Indian roots of "Bollywood" composer A.R. Rahman's "The Journey Home" and Brightman's own "You Take My Breath Away" to evocative recastings of the emblematic standards "Stranger in Paradise" and Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," while ex-Killing Joke keyboardist Jaz Coleman provides the savory East-meets-West orchestrations that ensure Brightman's star turns the seamless foundations they deserve. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars New to Sarah Brightman.......2007-03-12

I'm very new to Sarah brightman's music and I enjoy this CD. I think she has an amazing voice. Very talented young woman and this cd was very relaxing and joyful to listen to. I like to learn and heard more from Sarah Brightman.

3 out of 5 stars Stranger in Paradise - More Like Stranger in a Lost Cause.......2006-12-30

I'm not throughly pleased with this album! This CD is only good if you know how to dance in a Middle-Easters fashion. About half of each track is dominated by all orchestrations and no Sarah. Plus, Pop-Sarah isn't really for me. I much prefer the Classical-Sarah. Some of the tracks are okay, like "Harem", "The Journey Home", "Beautiful", and "Stranger in Paradise". Really, this is a good CD for your collection, but I wouldn't listen to it on a 24/7 basis.

5 out of 5 stars No voice like hers in the world.......2006-10-01

I own this cd. I saw her in person at the "Harem" concert. Never had I heard or seen any voice like this. What a performer, best concert I'd ever seen. Beautiful voice, I can never get enough of Sarah Brightman's music. It is so comforting at times. I have all her music and this cd makes you wonder, how can she top this? Thank you Sarah Brightman for giving us your beautiful gift of music.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Brightman, Her best CD........2006-09-18

Sarah is just the best, she can hit any note and her individuality shines on this CD. She sings "The Journey Home" from the musical Bombay Dreams and her voice just soars. "Harem", "Mysterious Ways" and "You Take My Breah Away" are songs that take me to dreamland. Amazing! A master piece!

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

5 out of 5 stars Somewhere Over The Rainbow.......2006-02-24

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-06-14

This CD is a must have for any Mormon Tabernacle Choir fans. The music is very reverent and gentle, and should also appeal to those not from the LDS church, seeing as how most of the music is common to the wider Christian community. This CD is a fantastic addition to any music collection.

3 out of 5 stars A few bright spots, but also some disappointments.......2007-01-19

It Is Well With My Soul is one of my favorite-favorites and that is the main reason why I bought the CD; it turned out to be a huge let down on this album, they rearranged it so much that I almost didn't recognize it. Be Still My Soul is another reason why I bought it and it's good, but not great. Swing Low Sweet Chariot is where it starts to get good. The last two songs "Thou Gracious God, Whose Mercy Lends"
and "Come, Let Us Anew" are very good reasons to buy this CD, they each have truely powerful passages and make the CD worth having. The Mormon Tabernacle Choirs 2006 release entitled Then Sings My Soul is by far the best that I've heard from them.

5 out of 5 stars This CD Deserves SIX Stars!.......2005-11-05

However, the rating scale has a limit of five. I own over 700 CDs of virtually every type of music. Peace Like A River belongs in a class by itself! I've never written a review before but, after listening to this STUNNING performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, I feel compelled to share my praise with that of the five other reviewers. If I were limited to one word, I would use the word "SUPERB" to describe this beautiful and moving CD. SIX stars for Peace Like a River! BRAVO!!!

5 out of 5 stars every good adjective .......2005-08-06

This album is all beauty and solace. The singing is pristine, the arrangements lush and often stirring--never saccharine. As with the previous reviewer, my first listing of "Peace Like a River" brought me to tears (especially "Peace Like a River," the sopranos in "Swing Low," and the bagpipes in "Thou Gracious God"). Buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2005-05-29

The perfect recording to help you recover from a long, hard day. Showcasing the MTC's "new" sound in contemporary choral arrangements with its own orchestra and conductor, "Peace Like a River" brought tears to my eyes in selection after selection during my first listen -- and I'm not normally an emotional person! The title song together with "Deep River," "Swing Low" and "Be Still My Soul" are alone worth the cost of the recording. Get this one!

5 out of 5 stars BEST CD I OWN!.......2007-05-13

This is by far my favorite Sarah Brightman Cd. Although it is probably her most pop oriented cd, it totally rocks! Most of the songs have a Middle Eastern Edge to them and are awesome to blast in the car! Make sure to try to get the version with either the bonus Dvd or the french tracks!

FIVE STARS!

2 out of 5 stars not the best.......2007-04-12

I agree with "music fan" about this CD. Eden is a good album, and she's a good artist. But either this album was poorly produced or something, because this does not show her best. I wouldn't classify this as world music at all, because the instruments aren't used and it's more classical pop; if that's a genre. It seemed rambly to me with many of the songs sounding similar and lacking originality. I love her, she's unique in her genre. But she really shines as a classicist, with Classics, her work by Andrew Lloyd Webber (who she married) and operatic albums. This is what she's best at, so her collaborations on Eden and La Luna, which are classical in nature but still allowed her to branch out musically, turned out good. I have a lot of her albums, but I wouldn't buy this one. It's more something to listen to once. A few of the songs are good, the album isn't terrible, but it's not very good.

5 out of 5 stars Magical Sarah Brightman.......2006-12-24

Sarah's voice soars! I love her voice and I'm a new fan. ^^ I've heard her name lots of times before from people I know and when I received some of her CDs and videos as early Christmas present, I was in awe! She definitely has the voice of an angel.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Forbidden.......2006-06-10

"Harem" is probably one of Sarah Brightman's most unique albums to date. Rarely an artist can captivate the sounds of the far east and be able to mix them in well with a western feel. west meets east if you will. Its nearly impossible to pick out one favorite out of the 14 tracks on the album. You can't choose "Harem" over "The War Is Over" or "Arabian Nights". All the songs on the album are the best and do the album justice and fit perfectly in their own way, as the theme is quite clear: Middle-Eastern music with a hint of pop and some club sounds. And while the album could have ended at "Until the End of Time" (yet another beautiful song on the album), Brightman ends the album with "You Take My Breath Away" (originally from her album Fly). Personally, this track should have been only present on "Harem" and not on the album "Fly". An excellent way nonetheless of ending the album.

The DVD shows the making of the album, and the video Harem is also on the DVD along with an alternate version to the video. Its the first time i've ever seen a video from Sarah Brightman and i must say, i'm not disappointed at all.

I'm anxiously awaiting a new album. I'm a new fan of Brightman's and i love what i'm hearing from this album. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Jason Howard does the Hollywood musical--and very well!!.......2000-10-30

This is an amazing CD. I recommend it especially for those who love Hollywood and Broadway musicals of the 1940's and 50's like "Oklahoma", "Annie Get Your Gun" and "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". Jason Howard is a wonderfully talented baritone whose singing rivals that of Howard Keel and Gordon MacRae, whose songs he sings on this disc. Every song is well done, and sung with appropriate feeling. Though recorded in a studio, you'd think that "Anything You Can Do," from "Annie Get Your Gun" was from a live theatrical performance, there is so much zest in the interaction between Howard and his female partner. The selections from "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" are particularly welcome, as they are seldom recorded. I can't praise this disc enough!

John Lurie has never minded throwing curveballs at crowds, and his filmmaker pal Jim Jarmusch has made a career of doing so. When they got together for Lurie to act in and compose music for Stranger than Paradise (and, of course, Down by Law), the combo worked like magic. Lurie's aloof distance on screen was well matched with his own music for string quartet, much of it crossing wires between the eerie and the aloof. There's a sense of strangeness in the music, played wonderfully by the Paradise Quartet, with Eugene Moye eking every burnished texture under the sun from his cello. When it comes time to tackle the 16-minute Resurrection of Albert Ayler, the Paradise Quartet's violinists Jill Jaffee and Mary Rowell help set an atmosphere not unlike Ayler's Live in Greenwich Village band. With two percussionists, a kit drummer, Curtis Fowlkes on trombone, Arto Lindsay on guitar, and himself on alto and soprano saxes, Lurie imagines Ayler's supersimple melodic sensibility correctly, as a launching pad for improvisation and expression. That said, Resurrection doesn't ultimately soar like Ayler but instead generates drifting clouds of low strings and percussion. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Strings that tell of sad things..........2006-03-26

When it comes to atmosphere, the sad, sometimes rainy soundtrack to Jim Jarmusch' excellent indy movie "Stranger than paradise" has it all, allthough it's only fair to say that it's a short and minimalistic experience: only 20 something minutes long. Maybe therefor the album has a wild, chaotic musical set piece called "The ressurrection of Albert Ayler" as a bonus. But the twenty minute score for "Stranger than paradise" is perfect nontheless. A string quartet plays John Lurie's understated tunes. The composer has an eye for detail and touching notes, just the way he acts in the movie itself: a flinch, a sigh, a gesture often is enough and all is filled with a feel of "real", of "genuine" and that's the strength of both the movie and its music.

John Lurie's second musical collaboration with Jim Jarmusch (if we skip his saxophone playing cameo appearance in "Permanent vacation" for a minute) is "Down by law" and it's both sad and good that he didn't repeat himself. The score for "Down by law" is more experimental, more filled with little pieces of wickedness en weirdness. It's also shorter than a regular soundtrack, but this one too has another Lurie piece, "Variety", as a bonus.

"Mystery train" is, to round up things, the third and last Lurie / Jarmusch collaboration. Because this movie has some Elvis themes in its core, the strings are replaced by electric guitar. But that doesn't mean that the intimacy of the first two Lurie soundtracks is gone: Lurie draws from his electric guitar the same atmosphere as before, giving us hints of saddness, loneliness and some "plingplungs" of deadpan humor.

P.S. John Lurie directed a t.v. series called "Fishing with John" for which he also made the music. One of his guests is Jim Jarmusch, so maybe, with the release of this cd, we have a Lurie/Jarmusch quartet anyway.

5 out of 5 stars This does not have "I put a spell on you", but..........2003-07-22

it does have great Viola Cello and Violin music by The Paradise Quartet. I love the sound of the cello and was very impressed when Lou Reed used it in his "Street Hassle" album.
Since I have this on a cassette, I tend to only listen to the Paradise Quartet side, and not the Resurrection of Albert Ayler side. But just for that side it was a worthy buy for me. It's great music to read by...or just daydream.
I loved the movie, have seen it many times and it's a great background music for my quiet moods.

5 out of 5 stars comparable to the film.......2003-03-20

Just like the film in terms of originality. this music stands on it's own away from the film but it's association doesn't hurt either. John Lurie is truly an underrated musician and actor. I appreciate the care that Jim Jarmusch uses in selecting music for his films. Highly Recommended! I put a spell on you!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastics Remixes by Victor Calderone.......2005-01-04

Beautiful Stranger is the theme song from the movie Austin Powers The Spy who shagged me, this singles contains 3 tracks, the first one is the lp version from the soundtrack, that you can only have it there, is not in any other studio Madonna Album.
The real jewels here are the two mixes by Victor Calderone (Calderone Club Mix 10.12 and Calderone Radio Mix 4.03), they made tghe song sound more of a dance one and I bet you that you will not be able to have your feet still, they will dance by themselves, great cd is an import but worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars madonna is cool.......2004-09-12

The original version is very cool and her voice is fresh and naked here without any effects on her voice. The Calderone mix is awesome with groovy bassline and twisted effects on her voice. The radio and the dub is okay too. I wish there was more mixes on this CD, but these will do just fine.

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic, Feel-Good Pop Classic!.......2003-07-28

After the five amazing singles that were released from the stunning album Ray Of Light, many were left wondering what Madonna could do to possibly top - or even equal - the success of this. She gave them their answer in June 1999, when she released the superb song Beautiful Stranger. The song was the main theme to the new Austin Powers movie, "Austin Powers II: The Spy Who Shagged Me." The song was an absolutely huge hit all over the world, and peaked at No.2 in the UK. The song spent a very impressive 16 weeks on the singles chart - Madonna's longest consecutive stay on the UK chart since 1984, when Like A Virgin spent 18 weeks on the chart.

Beautiful Stranger begins straight away with a bold and brashy beat. The melody of the tune is very famous and you just enter party-mode straight away. You've heard the song a million times before, but you carry on listening because it's just so damn addictive! Madonna then starts singing the first verse, "Haven't we met? You're some kind of beautiful stranger. You could be good for me. I've had the taste for danger. If I'm smart then I'll run away, but I'm not so I guess I'll stay. Heaven forbid. I take my chance on a beautiful stranger." A short and sweet verse, which is followed up by the brilliant bridge, where Madonna sings, "I looked into your eyes and my world came tumbling down. You're the devil in disguise. That's why I'm singing this song." The chorus then starts as the beat rises and Madonna sings, "To know you is to love. You're everywhere I go. And everybody knows. To love you is to be part of you. I paid for you with tears. And swallow all my pride. Da (x13) Beautiful stranger! Da (x13) Beautiful Stranger!" The song then goes down, with the psychedelic beat twisting around the arrangement in the background, and Madonna sings the second verse, "If I'm smart then I'll run away, but I'm not so I guess I'll stay. Haven't you heard? I fell in love with the beautiful stranger." Madonna then sings the second bridge, which is slightly altered to sound like, "I looked into your face. My heart was dancing all over the place. I'd like to change my point of view. If I could just forget about you." Madonna then repeats the chorus before a corny but very funny flute plays the song out.

The video to Beautiful Stranger stars Mike Myers as Austin Powers, because - obviously - the song is from the film. It begins with Austin in his "Shaguar" driving along a country road, when he receives a video message from Basil. He warns Austin about a "Master of Disguise," Madonna herself. He warns Austin that she's seductively dangerous, and Austin thinks he can handle himself - that is, until he tracks down the foxy little minx herself! Madonna is performing this song in a small green club. Everyone's dancing including Austin, who totally falls for the icon as soon as he lays eyes on her. He tries to attract her attention by dancing in front of her and miming phrases such as "Call me!" It really is a hilarious video, and Austin's vivid imagination offers cheeky insights into what he'd be doing if he was with Madonna in his car. It's just a feel-good, dance along happy video! All in all, Beautiful Stranger is definitely one of Madonna's best ever hit singles, and it's a crime that it didn't make it to No.1 in the UK.

4 out of 5 stars A highly enjoyable import!.......2003-07-15

This one's a good buy, particularly if you're either a. a Madge fan or b. didn't want to buy the "Spy Who Shagged Me" soundtrack. The LP Version is the complete version of the song, and is NOT the same as the edit included on GHV2, and the two Calderone mixes are a lot of fun. Good deal.

5 out of 5 stars Great song, great CD.......2003-01-12

This is a fun song . . . the lp/movie version has that '60s pop sound that works great with an Austin Powers movie. The Calderone Club Mix takes a different, dance-oriented, more contemporary approach that is equally involving. A good song can wear multiple faces successfully.

The Calderone Radio Mix is just a shorter version of the Club Mix.

If I had a complaint, my only one would be that I wish there were more mixes included, as someone else mentioned. Other than that, I think this is a worthy addition to your collection.
