Work In Progress Live

Editorial Reviews

Tarkus Magazine, Norway
Not many of today’s bands can match DFA on technique and energy, and this cd is sheer live fireworks.

Product Description
DFA specializes in a highly complex but richly melodic compound made of equal parts symphonic progressive rock and jazz fusion. Far from being the solo-happy wankfest it might appear to be from the description, the album is a testament to the band's strong ensemble work. The epic compositions, written by drummer Alberto De Grandis and keyboardist Alberto Bonomi, leave plenty of room for improvisation, but hew closely to tuneful outlines. Bonomi and guitarist Silvio Minella weave in and out of each other's virtuosity, creating a lush fabric of rich musical colors that never fails to engage. When either man solos, the break is equally impressive for its restraint as for its skill. De Grandis keeps the rhythm at a constant boil, with his jazzy cymbal work driving the sound as much as the kick drum; bassist Luca Baldassari holds steady, the pole off which the flags fly. "Trip on Metro," a piece that dates back to the group's early demos, shows a subtle Mahavishnu Orchestra influence, while "Pantera," "Caleidoscopio" and "Ragno" perfectly balance the blend of jazz rhythm, classical melody and rock firepower that is the hallmark of Italian progressive rock. Equally impressive and accessible, if this music is merely a work in progress, the final version will be drop-dead astonishing. HIGH BIAS, USA (courtesy of)

The people who felt betrayed when Linda Eder covered several pop songs on 2002's Gold will be relieved that her follow-up, Broadway My Way, is a return to the Great White Way. As if to prove that she isn't limited to either the songs of Frank Wildhorn or ballads, Eder tackles some well-known show tunes. The ballads tend to be overwrought, so it's best to look for the uptempo numbers. The singer's take on "Some People" is technically fine but so va-va-voom showbiz that it lacks the deranged edge that makes the song so compellingly dramatic. Things work a lot better on "I Am What I Am": while Eder doesn't take it to the top (or rather over the top), this is as close as she gets to Mermanizing a number. Elsewhere, "Don't Rain on My Parade" (immortalized by Streisand) and "Man of La Mancha" are appropriately brassy and triumphant, with Eder roaring her way through both songs. Fans of both Eder and Wildhorn should note that the singer reprises her Svengali's "Gold," the title track from her previous album, and an excerpt from his long-in-the-works Camille Claudel. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Linda Eder - Great Voice.......2007-07-06

This lady has one great voice. She can certainly sell a song. My only reservation about her is that she's a bit cocky. I think she could use some humility.

5 out of 5 stars Not a voice.......an instrument.......2007-02-17

Unbelievable breath control, phrasing, and style. My 10 yr. old Granddaughter who heretofore has listened and loved the usual rap
and hip-hop, heard me playing this disc and begged me to buy her
one........and I did, and she plays it all the time, and to her
friends. Linda Eder exceeds the Streisand mystique by far.

5 out of 5 stars the best female singer of the great american standards........2006-07-24

i am turning 60 years old this year. i went to my 1st.broadway
musical in 1960. over the years i have had the honor to see
almost all of the giants of american song, garland, streisand,
patti lupone, lena horne, betty buckley, barbaracook etc. in
"broadway, my way" linda eder cements her place as the best of the best. from an anthem like "i am what i am" to the lovely
"on the street where you live" captures you body and soul.
i loved this album, and don't ever miss a chance to see her live. JOHN POWER

5 out of 5 stars The powerful and beautiful voice of Linda Elder.......2006-02-23

A great selection of songs. Tremendous amount of energy in Linda's voice. I just love it.

5 out of 5 stars Linda Eder shines with her Broadway album.......2006-02-18

Wow! Linda Eder has an outstanding voice. She sells Broadway in the styles of Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand. After hearing this you will want more.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music... Beautiful People.......2002-10-01

Yes, DFA keep on amazing us, caressing and pushing, kicking and licking, taking off for high peaks just before landing like an eagle that has spotted a running white rabbit. In an instant they take our breaths away, they shock us with they technical abilities, very close to perfection, still warm like a motherly womb.

Above all, the reason why DFA play this magical music (that will live on for a very long time) is that they are magic, beautiful people who live simply according to their inner feelings, love, fear, intimacy and honour, pride and brotherhood... DFA is honesty at its best... that is why we are so hooked!

Long live DFA

5 out of 5 stars Progressive rock doesnýt get any better than this........2002-01-16

DFA performed for the first time live here in the U.S at the annual Nearfest concerts on June 17, 2001 at Lehigh University's Zoellner Arts Center. The group hails from Italy and has quite an international following. This performance was a key factor in elevating their status as one of the premier prog-rock bands in the world in the eyes of the American audience. The responses of the audience show that they were an enormous success. The group is Silvio Minella (guitars), Luca Baldassari (electric bass), Alberto De Grandis (drums, vocals) and Alberto Bonomi (keyboards, vocals).
DFA's music is heavy on the keyboards with a multitude of layering of all the other instruments, which makes for a remarkable listening experience. The separation of each instrument is astounding for a live recording; it's difficult to notice if it's actually live or in the studio. If it wasn't for the dialogue and the crowd's response to the music you would never know the difference. I have to tip my hat to Giampaolo Righetti, the mixing and remastering had a profound effect on this recording. An extraordinary amount of time and effort went into this process, you can tell. The musicianship in this group is quite simply put, out of this world. Most of the music is instrumental. A few of the tracks offer vocals in their native tongue.
"Work In Progress Live" is exactly what it says it is...music that's in a constant state of building and changing. `La Via' is their prog-rock masterpiece clocking in at over fifteen minutes, in fact there isn't a track under six minutes on the entire recording, which is status quo for any good progressive work. This a solid release from start to finish with absolutely no weaknesses whatsoever. Progressive rock doesn't get any better than this, and this live recording could easily set the standard for other groups that are looking to achieve the same results. I can't possibly imagine that a group this good could possibly get any better, but I am sure they will. They will most certainly become legends in no time if they maintain the standards and quality that they set when they play live. Keep your eyes on this group; they are paving a path that others will soon take.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the BEST live album ever made?.......2002-01-10

I received a promotional package of CD's from Moonjune Records, for review and 'air time', on my two internet radio stations. Well, I opened the large envelope and what do I find? Two of the three CD's are Italian Prog......oh no! The last Italian Prog I listened to was Banco at Nearfest 2001, and to tell the truth, I was not empressed, at all. So, out falls the DFA CD, Work in Progress, recorded at Nearfest 2000....oh no! The people at Moonjune Records were nice enough to send the CD's and info, so I had to listen. WOW! I was blown away from the first track Escher, reaching for the CD cover and info, I read all I could while listening to the rest of the CD. I won't even bother to getting into the the six tracks, there is no stand out, there all GREAT! No, SPECTACULAR!!!!! This is Progressive Rock at its finest. I noticed in the info that that some have called DFA a Fusion band. There are Jazzy moments but, don't be turned off by this, it just adds to the complexity of the music. These guys have the Chops to get the job done! Alone each solo with a masters intensity, together, the word 'Tight' mean anything! This is perhaps the finest live album I have ever heard! If not for the breaks and applause(Serious Applause!), you can not tell its a LIVE album! Its that Perfect! All six tracks are now into rotation on Odd Sky & Sound of Shadows Internet Radio Brodacast.

5 out of 5 stars A killer live album.......2001-07-29

DFA plays a modern symphonic fusion that draws on many elements to produce a dynamic sound that can be blistering symphonic one minute and quiet and spacey the next. While they can easily blow you away with their intense sound, their excellent compositional skills and sense of dynamics always keeps the music fresh with plenty of breathing room. The proceedings begin with "Escher", a standout track which starts out with a spacey intro that builds into a energy filled piece with great melodies. One of the band's most memorable pieces. "Trip On Metro" is a groovy cut, with a solid bass line and excellent drumming. "Pantera" is a nice and varied piece, with great electric piano in the quieter sections. The epic "Rango" is filled with all the different aspects of the band's sound, building up the intensity and coming down for the relaxed portions. DFA are one of the brightest stars shining in today's murky progressive scene. While great on their studio albums, this band is especially at home in the live element and this performance is certainly indicative of that. This was truly a magical set, and as great as it was to be there, it's just as great to hear it here on CD.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2003-11-24

I found this CD more satisfying than the previous two. I play it constantly while driving. I have no idea how I came to this CD. Maybe one of my daughters bought it for me. I prefer the renditions of Mozart, Beethoven and Dorsey himself to those of Bach (personal taste, I guess). By the way, I found tracks 20 and 21 on this CD, "Dimensions" and "Birthday Dimensions," the best of the lot. Both were composed by Dorsey. He should do more. I am waiting for his next CD. Dorsey is a gift to our generation, as much as Beethoven was a gift to people of another time.

1 out of 5 stars Make him stop!.......2002-01-09

I can't believe this guy even has a recording contract. He is completely without talent and just plays a bunch of machines that any 15 year old with an IQ of 80 can operate. This music is some kind of bad joke.

2 out of 5 stars Busted is a bust.......2001-01-06

This CD is a big disappointment after hearing BACHBUSTERS and BEETHOVEN OR BUST. It contains duplicates from these previous albums and a lot of other music that isn't especially pleasant to listen to and has no central theme. The Mozart additions are not very exciting and sound a lot like cuts from the previous albums. I had hoped to hear some great Mozart stuff on this disc, but it isn't there.
