About the Artist
Four years after his acclaimed Selected Werks debut sees Rennie Pilgrem, ‘The Most Valuable Person In Breaks’ (Breakspoll 2 years running) unleash an all-new artist album on his own TCR, the label that has the biggest, most respected catalogue of Breakbeat music in the World.

Rennie has been at the forefront of this burgeoning scene for over 10 years. Apart from his huge success in the Hardcore Rave outfit Rhythm Section, he burst into the International arena as a solo artist with the massive ‘A Place Called Acid’ under his Thursday Club guise. This legendary breaks tune is included on this album as a bonus track after Rennie re-recorded it as the title sequence for the film The Football Factory, a highly-touted forthcoming film made by the people who produced the club culture slice of life film, Human Traffic. Rennie has recently made serious waves in clubland with his remix of Zero’s ‘Emit/Collect’ (Streetwise) arguably the biggest breaks tune of 2004, winning "Remix of The Year" in Breakspoll.

Product Description
Pilgremage celebrates the rich diversity of the breakbeat genre, exploring funk, rock, techno, electro, punk and all points in between. Real instruments and musicians lift it beyond being ‘just another dancefloor album’. Rennie’s live bass is augmented by Red Snapper’s Richard Thair, Chris Carter on guitar and bass and Canadian DJ/sax sensation Spence. Rennie has also collaborated once again with fellow award-winner MC Chickaboo, angel-voiced singer Sara Whittaker-Gilbey (from Mara) and the ‘producer’s producer’ Uberzone for an exclusive version of their new tune ‘Fuego’.

Clocking in at nearly 80 minutes, this posthumous release comprises the last recordings Michael Brecker made before his untimely death in January 2007. Battling the debilitating effects of leukemia, he sought comfort, strength, and transcendence through music. The all-star lineup on Pilgrimage, which includes Herbie Hancock, Brad Mehldau, Pat Metheny, Jack DeJohnette, and John Patitucci, has worked in various combinations over the past four decades. Here, they perform with the compelling group interplay of a longstanding ensemble. Brecker's nine compositions mark the first time he made an album solely of his own material. This is further testament to the creative drive that helped sustain him during his physical decline. From balladry to classic post-bop reveries, Brecker has fashioned one of his finest albums, and certainly his most personal work. The disc closes with the title track, which was also--fittingly--the last number he recorded. Never maudlin, this music and these fine musicians celebrate the power of music to connect human beings to one another, note by note, measure by measure. --David Greenberger

5 out of 5 stars PILGRIM'S REST.......2007-07-30

What a bunch of fellow pilgrams to have on your journey Messrs. Metheny/Hancock/Mehldau/Patitucci/DeJohnette all of which feature often in my music collection. All playing Michael Brecker originals starting with the cross-rhythmic, freeform of 'The Mean Time, to the circular solo travels of 'Five Months From Midnight' and then to the pulsating 'Anagram' and I'm only to track 3. Great soloing from all concerned and a must have for your collection. Micheal Brecker was critically ill when he made this final recording before his untimely death in Jan-2007. Resting in the Reeds with Trane.

4 out of 5 stars Pilgrimage.......2007-07-23

To me this was the farewell recording of Michael Brecker to the musicians he started the series of recordings with, from "Two Blocks from the Edge" to "Don't Try This at Home", " Now You See It...Now You Don't", "Time Is Of The Essence" and many more. I have listened to the above mentioned CD's but this has an impact on my listening to MB, he allows a free space for one to realize his ability to improvise. With a pianist like Herbie Hancock, he is able to explore different sounds and exercises. John Patittuci is one of my favorite bassists, he has a strong sound that sometimes confuses his acoustic bass with an electric. Pat Matheny has a unique sound that brings sweet harmonies to this CD. I have always listened to Brad Mehldau accompanying Joshua Redman, he is one pianist that would let you listen to his solos time and again. I have always admired Jack Dejohnette's drumming from early recordings of Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew" to Charles Lloyd's "Forest Flower", here with Pat, reminds me of Pat Matheny 's 80/81 CD which also features Michael Brecker and Dewey Redman on tenor Saxophones. I give this CD four stars.

5 out of 5 stars Tragic Loss.......2007-07-20

This is a fitting tribute to a great artist. As someone else said, "It softens the blow".

4 out of 5 stars Gone before his time.......2007-07-18

The great music on this cd helps soften the blow of losing such a talented saxophonist as Michael Brecker. The musicicians play as if they knew this would probably be his last cd, and unfortunately it was.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Brecker's Best Ever........2007-07-09

I think other reviewers have said it better than I could when it comes to Michael Brecker's final album "Pilgrimage" so, I'll be brief. This is his best album ever. The playing as well as the musicianship between Brecker and his all-star line-up of Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnette, John Patitucci and Brad Mehldau is stellar on every track here. There isn't one weak track recorded here.
"Pilgrimage" features his best playing and his best compositions - truly a testament and high mark in the legacy of this respected sax player. If you don't believe me, read the other reviews here and then buy this CD.
An Instant Classic for 2007.
Rest in Peace, Michael.

If you like your Wagner served up in bleeding chunks or if you're simply in a hurry to hear the tunes, then this compilation is for you. The performances, drawn from the Polygram (mainly Deutsche Grammophon) back catalog, are for the most part authoritative. They feature the likes of Herbert von Karajan, with the Berlin Philharmonic, and Karl Böhm, with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra (and chorus), in extracts from recordings of complete operas, and conductors Giuseppe Sinopoli, Otto Gerdes, and Antal Doráti in some of the more familiar overtures and preludes. Singing, without which it is impossible to get the full flavor of Wagner's work, is skirted whenever possible: this is an unapologetic tribute to Wagner the orchestral genius. At times the salesmanship is a little overblown--the glitzy packaging includes a cover shot of the helicopters from Apocalypse Now--and the sound, some of it from very good originals, seems to have been juiced with a little added digital reverb, resulting in an overall glassiness. The gaps between tracks are minimized, disco style, so there's no dead air, and the whole thing has an Entertainment Tonight feel to it. Were he around, Wagner would have screamed bloody murder, then happily taken his cut of the action. For today's on-the-go listener, this may well be the most practical way to enjoy Wagner's music, but we won't be happy until it motivates at least one newcomer to seek out a recording of a complete opera. Anyone who does that will find out what "apocalypse" really means. --Ted Libbey

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection and price!.......2007-05-11

I found this to be a nice collection of favorites, especially to keep in the car and listen to. It is a variety of well known compilations. Although not encompassing, it is perfect as a review for driving, relaxing, and enjoyment. Plus, the price is right!

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome collection!.......2007-01-10

This is a great collection of some of Wagner's most memorable songs for those of you who do not want to buy the whole opera's for some of his works.

    4 out of 5 stars Helicopters? Marines?.......2006-12-05

Do those infotainment marketing mavens ever get it right? Talk about Hollywood disconnect! Not only are the helicopters irrelevant, but to quote from the gushy drivel on the jacket, "The gripping power of Richard Wagner's music was demonstrated with spectacular effect in...Apocalpse Now, when the "Ride of the Valkyries' became synonymous with the chilling journey of Marine 'Huey' helicopters into battle..."

Marine? Marine? Them Hueys in the movie was ARMY Air Cav, slick! "First of the ninth--air mobile." If you're going to dally down that primrose path, at least get it right.

Better yet, drop the choppers. Most people who listen to Wagner probably realize that quality of an artistic work has a mystically inverse relationship to the number of helicopters contained in it.

As for the music, it is good, but the operatic equivalent of sound bites, which may be just right for people who are new to Wagner or just can't take very much of him. Hmm...perfect for a helicopter ride, perhaps?

5 out of 5 stars A great addition to my music collection.......2006-07-20

This CD takes the place of all my other Wagner music. VERY well done. Somehow I didn't realize that there were two cds in the package--what a pleasant surprise! Of the two cds, I like the first one best, but they are both good. I listen to this cd daily on my way to work. Stirring! I am so glad that I purchased this. Some purists might have a problem with the fact that some of the selections are not there in their entirety. I have no problem with that though. I recommend this to anyone who loves Wagner.

    5 out of 5 stars Quintessential Wagner.......2006-05-15

Okay, so I like Wagner. I LOVE "Ride Of The Valkyries". Do I want to go out and buy every single stinkin thing Wagner did? No. If you are a die-hard Wagner fan you probably will not think much of this collection.

But if you like Wagner and appreciate "Ride Of The Valkyries", and maybe require it in just a little more substance than what is included in "Apocolypse Now Redux", then this is what you want. The extra tracks are bonuses and are quite good. Meets my needs, presentation great, performance excellent. I recommend it for anyone that needs a Wagner fix.

5 out of 5 stars Transcendant spiritual beauty.......2007-05-19

After arriving at the end of this astonishing CD, any critical objectivity was swept away by the sheer transcendent quality of these performances. One need not be religious to understand something out of the ordinary is happening here. This was recorded in London in between performances in France and Spain where the choir hiked from town to town and performed the program in abbeys and churches, ending with a performance in the Cathedral of Santiago de Campostela.Surely the memories of those churches, their extraordinary spiritual qualities and acoustics, remained in the singer's ears and hearts during this recording session. So much of it is so beautiful, with the motet 'O Maria vernans rosa' by Clemens non papa being for me the highlight. It is hard to imagine anything more transcendant than the soaring treble lines and prismatic harmonies in that music. All that is missing are the candles and the incense. Glorious!

5 out of 5 stars More Gardiner than "Renaissance", but nonetheless undeniably vivid..........2007-01-22

In his first non-Bach recording for the Monteverdi Choir's own 'Soli deo gloria' label, John Eliot Gardiner presents a sublime programme of works from the 12th-16th centuries inspired by the renowned Santiago pilgrim route. If the CD does not quite surpass the Monteverdi Choir's 2005 recording of similar music ('Santiago a cappella', Universal/Emarcy 0028947630104), it is still by any account a magnificent achievement. The performances exhibit both impeccable ensemble and near-faultless intonation, and are beautifully encaptured within a warm and reverberant acoustic. In addition, Gardiner frequently exploits a slow 'tactus' to great effect, resulting in readings which are spiritually charged and spacious (perhaps most obviously in Morales' ubiquitous 'Parce mihi Domine', Mouton's 'Nesciens mater' and Clemens 'O Maria vernans rosa').

If there can be any criticism of the disc, it is that, at times, the towering force of Gardiner's musical personality is perhaps a little too dominant. In his defence, Gardiner makes no pretence that this is anything but a highly idiosyncratic account, a fact as obvious from the presentation (note the CD cover and booklet notes featuring personal reflections from himself [pp.1-2] and members of the choir [pp.34-5]) as from the performances themselves. A number of the interpretations, for example, rely on a rhetorical approach to dynamics and tempo arguably more appropriate to late 16th/early 17th century secular music than 'prima prattica' (and earlier) sacred music, and whilst this musicological liberty is often effective, sometimes it is not. The declamatory 'forte' outbursts of Dufay's 'Rite majorem' are indicative of this over-emphasis on text; similarly the rather organic tempo in Victoria's motet 'O quam gloriosum' sounds a little mannered in places and seems to contradict what is known about tempo in Renaissance music (see below *). Additionally, the choice of forces (see below **) and occasional mannerisms (such as the clipped 'Hosanna' in the Sanctus and Benedictus of Victoria's Mass) are powerfully suggestive of the mixed-voice Cambridge choral tradition of Rutter, Marlow and Brown (Gardiner himself having studied there). And incidentally, why is the Credo from Victoria's Mass silently omitted...?!

If the overall result, then, is really more a personal invitation to Gardiner's insight than an accurate representation of the selected works, this does not detract from the profound and ethereal experience which is created upon listening to this marvellous release. Highly recommended.

(*) It would be dangerous to interpret sources too literally, but it surely significant that contemporary theorists almost consistently relate the tactus to mediums with a regular factor, most commonly the heartbeat (e.g. Ramis de Pareia [1482], Adam of Fulda [1490], etc...), but also breathing (Gaffurius, 1496), walking (Buchner c.1520), etc.
(**) Performance of Iberian polyphony with instruments - rather than 'a cappella' (as here) - is well documented, and Santiago Cathedral itself boasted 4 salaried ministriles from 1539. In Rome too, where Victoria's Mass was published (1583), instrumental participation was common. The English jesuit Gregory Martin, describing music in Roman churches c.1576-8, for example, notes: "...with the Organs a childes voice shriller and louder than the instrument, tuneable with every pipe: Among the quyre, Cornet or Sagbut, or such like above the voices..." (Roma Sancta, 1581, p.96)

PILGRIMAGE is one of the finest albums from the classic ash lineup of ANDY POWELL and TED TURNER and is as good as ARGUS,the debut albums.I bought this album recently and have thouroughly enjoyed this along with WISHBONE FOUR nd LIVE IN CHICAGO albums.A must for all lovers of good classic rock music.

    4 out of 5 stars Boogie On.......2006-05-01

This one is more boogie and free flowing.. not as serious or dramatic as their more elaborate styles.. A nice outing for the avid fan, sure brings back memories for those of us that grew up with them.. enjoyable CD..Chris

5 out of 5 stars Pilgrimage, to me , is as good as Argus....BUT.......2006-01-28

I went to see Wishbone Ash AGAIN this Thanksgiving in Memphis....and the new lineup impressed me as much as the first time I saw them at the Warehouse in New Orleans in 1972....How Andy has held onto that energy is amazing, they came out with Outward Bound, off of the New England albun, and I was blown away again. Even more amazing, there was pitiful turnout at Neils, the venue in Memphis, because of the holiday, and they STILL played like they were playing to a sellout crowd. Muddy's style compliments Andy's perfectly, and i'm wondering if Bob Skeet isnt the best bass player i ever saw. GO SEE THEM whever you can....unlike so many other older touring bands, they are as fresh as they were way back then.

5 out of 5 stars these guys were giants and unknowns at the same time..........2005-12-27

If you've stumbled upon this group by accident as you plow thru music on cdnow or some other venue and you are not surewhat this group is about, click on "Where Were You Tomorrow" *if a clip is provided* THIS IS WISHBONE ASH! If that clip doesn't move you, then you should immediatly make an appointment with your nearest coroner. In Pilgramage, you find WA as jazzy as you will find in any of their other efforts *the tail end of their tune "Handy" is another jazzy example * But they were not just jazz...they were ROCK when others were pretenders. In fact, they were not so much jazz as they were innovative. Twin lead guitarists? Who knew? Many bands of the early 70's featured more than one guitarist but NO other band I know of featured two leads. It made for a unique sound. I have to agree with another reviewer: the departure of Martin Turner removed so much of the original 4 member's sound. They did go on to record more and even some equally great stuff here and there, but their highwater mark came as a 4-some. All in all, PILGRAMAGE is one fine album...it won't disappoint *unless you're not willing to challenge conventional rock like Wishbone Ash did*

5 out of 5 stars An Early One In Their Great Journey.......2005-04-23

Firstly, I'd like to correct an earlier reviewer who said this album follows "Argus" as their third album. "Pilgrimage" is actually their second album. "Argus" being their third.

Also, unlike what the same reviewer said about "Argus" and the first album being their best, Wishbone Ash continued to progress all the way up 'til 1980 with spectacular songs and guitarwork by Powell/Turner/Turner, and then later Powell/Turner/Wisefield. The reason I say only up until 1980 is because Martin Turner on bass and vocals left after that year, which IMHO, was a deadly blow to the band.

When "Pilgrimage" was recorded, Andy Powell and Ted Turner were about 20 or 21 years old. That is just unbelievable. The song "The Pilgrim" is worth the price of admission alone and is one of the most adventurous compositions to ever be recorded. The remainder of the album is great as well.

If you think rock has progressed in our day and age (2005) from what it was back in 1971, think again. This album comes from a time when musicians actually played rather than relying on some studio technology and amp-modeling technology over-sanitizing and sterilizing all the music that seems to be the norm today.

And wow, you can actually hear the bass with definition on this album, unlike today's wall-of-mush bass that is so common.

5 out of 5 stars In this Lifetime, My Favorite Album..........2006-11-07

An ethereal masterpiece. Without a doubt, my all-time favorite album (and my musical tastes range from Rock through classical). Why oh why was there never a follow-up?

4 out of 5 stars Pilgrimage: A journey of the soul and mind .......2005-07-05

This is a monumental CD offering from 'Pilgrimage' called 9 Songs of Ecstasy. There is not one song that is not good. This is a new age song fest that is both ambient and haunting at the same time. This CD is best suited for listeners who are at home relaxing. Try this - close your eyes at the start of track 1 and relax and let the soothing rhythms take your soul and mind on a journal into a dreamscape of your own sub-conscious. The female vocalist who sings a romano-celtic tongue has a voice that is angelic.
This album is a one only release from this artist but what a wonderful release. This is chant for those who want to relax and let their minds wonder in the playground of this rich and character driven music beat. The coverwork of this album is also a work of art and adds to the flavour of the overall album.

5 out of 5 stars Just simply awesome..........2005-05-09

I am an avid listener of trippy music, and this definitely hits the bag. I could describe it as flowing operatic semi-classical female vocals over electronic beats and ambient samples, quite like trip hop, but more. The piano is minimal but very effective when played I must say. The melodies are just flowing and very ethereal, quite surreal and melanchonic at the same time, quite timeless.

    5 out of 5 stars thumbs up.......2003-04-24

this is a great set of tracks, if your into chill out and down tempo with lots of dream like atmosphere I recommend this cd.

    5 out of 5 stars Impressed.......2002-09-01

This is my first online buy for music. I decided to try the used and I am so happy I did. It arrived in just a few days and is in perfect condition with my paying just a fraction of the cost of a new one. WOW

John Doan plays the harp guitar, an obscure antique instrument with an indeterminate lineage. When you hear Doan play, it sounds like more than one musician performing. It's not that his lines are so complicated, but deep lows and ringing highs are mixed in with the sound of conventional acoustic guitar strings.

Although Doan doesn't play traditional music, the American musician uses the harp guitar to profess his love of the Celtic Isles. Wayfarer follows up his previous album, Eire: Isle of the Saints, with another collection of songs woven together with the intricacy of a Celtic knot. Inspired by his travels to sacred locations in Ireland, Doan often composed this music right on the spot. Amplified by Billy Oskay's immaculate production, Doan's gorgeous melodies lift off the heather accompanied by Irish whistles, subtle choirs, and enveloping atmospheres. With Wayfarer, Doan once again goes beyond the Celtic clichés and rote standards for an album that brings the mystery back to Ireland. --John Diliberto

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars gentle, uplifting.......2005-04-13

I highly recommend John Doan's album Wayfarer. Harp, guitar blend with Doan's storytelling vision in a collection of songs that are uplifting, provocative, mesmerizing.

Skellig Michael is pure magic, but the rest of the album gives you soothing, yet invigorating music. Sometimes Celtic instrumentals can been too soothing, make me sleepy, slowing me down when I am trying to write. Others make me want to get up and dance, causing me to lose focus. Doan's album is just right, the perfect back drop. This is not a variety of tunes, but ones that seamlessly fit together and blend right into one another, so they are non-intrusive when I am trying to concentrate.

Pure Celtic magic! Flawlessly conjured by Doan.

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful journey, however you choose to experience it.......2003-01-02

WAYFARER is a lovely album of soothing contemplative pieces played with the beauty and quiet passion I expect from Doan. It is not as varied in style as EIRE: ISLE OF THE SAINTS, and if you're not listening carefully, the songs will blend right into each other. Not that this is necessarily a handicap; I use this music for my Healing Touch work and for reading and journaling, all times when sudden changing of styles and tempos might be very distracting indeed.

This album is Doan's story -- in music -- of his travels to sacred sites or "thin places" in the British Isles. If you have an hour to travel, you can take the journey yourself by reading the notes Doan provides with each song. Close your eyes to experience the song, then open them and read the notes once or twice. Then close them again and fly away.

5 out of 5 stars What an incredible string player!! Great, Gentle music........2000-11-29

..and I don't even like Celtic-inspired music. John Doan is a real treat. If you have never heard any of his solo releases (this one and Eire), have a listen to some of the samples here. This Oregon-based musician primarily plays guitar (and other instruments as well) on this CD. His talent is truly amazing. He brings effortless-sounding technique to the music making it complex and accomplished, yet not over-powering. There is a Celtic feel to the music, but this is not the traditional jigs and reels music. This CD is more contemplative, and evokes a mood of green lands and misted hills--after all, it is on the Hearts O' Space label. There is some additon of complementary sounds in the music, such as distant church bells, but the addtional stuff doesn't make the music sappy or contrived. Each piece is a treat on its own, so listen to any of the samples, and you will get an idea of the spirit of the music. Doan also has a wonderful Christmas CD available from Hearts of Space--try it, too.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!.......2000-11-24

I bought this album because I had previous one--Eire~Isle of the Saints. I consider it not better than previous album (Eire) initially. But after listening to it again and again, I have promoted this album as one of my best favorites. The songs within always touch me and bring me to another space. It really deserves trying John Doan's work.

5 out of 5 stars His best work so far!.......1999-12-07

If you loved Eire you'll be equally moved by his latest work. Wayfarer is a reflective and soulful album. #3 "Gazing on the Face of the Sea" and #10 "St. Joseph Arrives in Avalon" are two of my favorites. Also there's a distant bell sound at the beginning of #5 "The Way of My Fathers" that makes you feel like you're right there. The listening experience is enhanced by reading his stories and thoughts included in his booklet. It's, in my opinion, his best work so far.
