Kenny Wayne is something of an anomaly among modern blues pianists. He favors neither deep, dark left-hand bass rumbles nor frantic right-hand skittering in the upper registers. Rather, he likes to take things at a medium-tempo, even-handed gait, even when he's working in the full-speed-ahead style of boogie-woogie bluesmen like Amos Milburn (Kenny's original "Joogie to the Boogie" and remakes of three Milburn classics). He's also partial to the curling New Orleans licks of Professor Longhair ("Blackberry Wine") and the laid-back "cocktail blues" sophistication of Charles Brown ("Bewildered"). Add in Wayne's wispy, insinuating voice and you've got yourself an undeniably pleasant late-night blues set. It won't set the house on fire, but it's not supposed to, and in an age of blues excess you've got to appreciate that approach. --John Morthland

Album Description

Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne is at the forefront of modern day blues and boogie woogie piano practitioners, working hard to keep this glorious music alive and kicking. Well versed in the New Orleans Blues and Jazz tradition by his Louisiana born parents, Kenny has along the way picked up a taste for Kansas City Swing and West Coast Jump which has made his dynamic live show much in demand at clubs and festivals in both North America and Europe. Here on "Let It Loose" his latest release on Electro-Fi we are gifted with the full spectrum of Kenny's prodigious songwriting ability as well as a three song tribute to past master Amos Milburn. In a blues world populated, some would say overpopulated with wailing guitars and harmonicas, it's reassuring that when Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne sits down at the piano bench and dances his ten digits over 88 keys, great things happen!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Disc of Real Boogie Woogie and Blues Piano.......2007-07-22

A few years ago I was sent a cd by a West Coast pianist, Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne which was a superb disc of hot R&B and jump blues in the vein of such legends as Amos Milburn, Floyd Dixon and Little Willie Littlefield. Subsequently he has started to tour at top festivals and clubs and the Canadian Electro-Fi label has issued Let It Loose, his second disc for the label and I believe fourth overall. The cd opens with a hard rocking Blackberry Wine, yet another tune of many derived musically from Amos Milburn's Chicken Shack Boogie. Milburn is clearly the main influence on Wayne who plays strong jump boogie piano that would have served Milburn proud. Joogie to the Boogie is a nice easy rocking number with some strong tenor from Pat Carey. A trio of songs, Bewildered, Let Me Go Home Whiskey, Memphis Slim's Blue and Lonesome, are a mini-tribute to Milburn who was one of the top selling R&B acts between 1948 and 1953. A more modern tone and a funk groove mark the slow reflective Wishing Well, while the title track is a high-stepping number that should prove irresistible for the swing dancers with its quick but not frenzied tempo. A more contemporary feel also characterizes the closing, Blues Carry Me Home, which is perhaps not as striking as some of the other numbers. Russell Jackson on bass anchors a solid rhythm section that never rushes the tempo and Brandon Isaak plays solid idiomatic guitar to complement Wayne. Wayne also contributed most of the songs here, and his songwriting is like his piano and vocals, first-rate. With all the albums that are supposedly extending the blues, its nice to find a disc whose playing and vocals is rooted in some undeservedly forgotten giants of the music that makes for a generally terrific recording.

This disc won the 2006 Juno Award (Canadian Grammy) for Blues. I have rated it conservatively (giving it 4 not 5 stars) as it is a wonderful recording by a gentleman who I have had the pleasure of seeing several times but not one that I consider a definitive, essential recording.

4 out of 5 stars Musical Jack-Hammers Dancing in My Head.......2000-01-29

I have never in my life heard such pounding bass. This CD is definitely an eye-opener to the subversive Detroit techno-bass scene. Techno-bass is a hybrid of 80's style electro and pounding, resonating, bass driven techno; creating an eerie robotic world. This CD has a bit of everything from booty-tek to German electro all manipulate to fit the Detroit sound. It is dark and cold on the surface, yet full of vibrancy and energy underneath, a perfect metaphor for the Motor City!

5 out of 5 stars exhillirating electro party tunes.......1999-12-01

probably one of the best detroit electro compilations ever! Every track is catchy and puts you in the right mood. The bass on this cd will have u addicted and you will go through many pairs of shoes dancing away to it. You can't go wrong with this album. Simply bassalicious!

On this installation of Studio K7's X-Mix series, British techno DJ Dave Clarke reveals his naughty little secret: he's a massive fan of electro, the early-'80s hybrid of hip-hop and European electronic music that predated (and strongly influenced) Detroit techno. On Electro Boogie he offers a short course in this music's history, mixing up the old, the new, and everything in between. Definitive classics like Model 500's "Future" and Channel One's "Technicolor" bump up against modern interpretations of the genre, such as Underground Resistance's "Electronic Warfare" and I-F's "I Do Because I Couldn't Care Less." In true hip-hop fashion, the mix is fast and furious, with enough jump cuts and scratching to keep the sounds fresh throughout. In addition to being an excellent introduction to the past, present, and future of electro, Electro Boogie is also the only place to find material from uncompromising underground artists such as Dopplereffekt and AUX 88 in CD form. This is essential listening for anyone looking to bridge the gap between hip-hop's urban sensibilities and techno's synthetic futurism. --Matthew Corwine

5 out of 5 stars Missing link influence between Depth Charge and Octagon Man?.......2002-08-23

This album surprised me because it wasn't the kung-fu/porn/soccer/B-movie cutups that I expect and love from Nine Deadly Venoms and Lust 1&2, but it was a clever and easily listenable "electro" mix that really proves J. Saul Kane's musical diversity. The re-remix of Scorn's The End (PCM mix) was not what I expected and it was even better than the remix! This CD is a bit of an Anthony Rother homage as well!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent excursion into sound........2001-12-07

Evil Knevil is a flat-out amazing tune. And Free-er Than Free is Kane at his best. Sandwiched between these masterpieces are a creamy center of gooey goodness. Get it now before it becomes too hard to find.

4 out of 5 stars eclectic cut and paste intro to the world of electro.......1999-10-23

j saul kane aka depth charge, octagon man etc turns to the compilation field with this selection of 'electro' tracks. i've highlighted the word electro because i'm sure that for some people a lot of tracks on the album don't come under their definition of 'electro.' Well that's a shame because his eclectic, cut + paste mix of tracks, with overdubs and samples has a great range, both in age and style.

From the original 'tainted love' 12 inch, to a version of scorn's drum + bass track 'the end' played at 33rpm, its a fine slab of hard edged electronica. I especially love the "little computer people project" track.

Along with the other cd's in the electro boogie series it provides a great survey of a music form that is often interpreted as being very limited in its scope.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great stuff from dave clarke........2000-12-23

This mix is truly representative of the electro sound, with cuts coming from various times and places. Its nice to hear a mix cd with a bit of thought behind it- not just your standard techno mix but a surging cut up of electro grooves- some are dark, some are funky, all are truly pounding tracks that will incite the irrepressable urge to boogie... Anyone into this stuff would be a fool not to purchase this cd - if you have heard the excellent Aux 88 volume of this series I can say that this is even better, more varied and full of energy.

5 out of 5 stars DON'T LISTEN TO THE ITALIAN FOOLS.......2000-06-28

This mix is wicked. If you've ever seen Dave Clarke spin, you know he never fails to deliver. It's got the bounce to make you move, moments of humour to make you giggle and shake your head, and then the moments of pure darkness that make you think you might be better off if the person closest to you in life were dead. Buy this now and you will see!

5 out of 5 stars ROCKS THE HOUSE.......2000-01-23

This is a brillant collection of Electro Funk; new and old, famous and underground.

4 out of 5 stars orbeat.......1999-04-24

Amazing! It's great work especially for the his followers. I've mixed up a few times and I can say that's a real Dave. The groove is very high and he mix up slow and techno-beat very simple without many contrabeat, he's the Genius. So, I think that his works will give us every new sound frontiers that we'll want

3 out of 5 stars orbeat.......1999-04-20

It,s not the real Dave, he is more strong than in other cd and his music sounds like at the beginning of techno minimal. This is not a critic way to send, but is also a our point of view.At the end is a good production for foreign market

First off, this is really a 3 album box set, consisting of 'AUX 88 Presents Electro Boogie', 'Dave Clarke Presents Electro Boogie Vol II The Throwdown', and 'Depth Charge Presents Electro Boogie'. Being that these are three seperate CDs, they should be reviewed accordingly.

AUX 88's disc isn't mixed very well. Still, the track listing is there. A good set as long as you can get past the poor mixing.

Dave Clarke's disc is the best mixed of the three and his track selection is really good. Electro electro electro. The last track is his 'Old Skool Cut Up', where he spends 12 mintues doing an hip-hop/electro collage.

Depth Charge's set is by far the best. It's very bazarre, and wickedly cool. Check out 'Little Computer People', it's a great track. Also notice 'Tainted Love' in the track listing. To answer your question, yes, that is the Soft Cell track. This just goes to show you how daring this mix is.

Overall, this is an excellent box set. ...

      Album Description

'Illumination', the debut CD from San Francisco band Hat, is a 9-track helping of groovin', boogie-liscious rock, at times referred to as 'electro-acousti-kaos'. A diverse collection of styles and sounds, this CD would fit just as neatly into the smoke and zone out section of your CD rack as it would into that space reserved for pure rock-n-roll lust, anger, and pschitzophrenia. Sometimes cerebral, sometimes blunt and simply powerful, always slightly eerie, 'Illumination' blazes new musical paths and searches for answers to questions we have not yet asked.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars kinda eerie.......1999-09-22

what is up with this band?! they start with a crazy dub-type jam about an "englishman's blood" , then onto some kind of barry White love jam into a folky country song. This kind of strangeness continues to finish with a King Crimson-ish instrumental with spooky muffled dialogue or something behind it. Anyway, I love this kind of stuff.
