Amazon.com essential recording

"The Power of Love" was Celine Dion's first chart-topping song in America, but it was a career-defining moment in more ways than one. It established her as a dependable hitmaker and also fixed the pattern of her biggest successes to come--songs that begin with delicate melodies and spare instrumentation and build into big, powerful productions over which Dion's incomparable vocals hit stratospheric heights. Dion attempts other directions on The Colour of My Love, such as the light dance-pop of "Misled" and "Everybody's Talkin' My Baby Down," but they don't ring as true as her duet with Clive Griffin in "When I Fall in Love" (from the film Sleepless in Seattle) and the title track. --Daniel Durchholz

4 out of 5 stars there are moments.......2007-06-18

There was a time when it seemed there would be no getting past Celine Dion's overwhelming voice. Vocal music would end, then and there, along with the 20th century and the millennium. No higher musical peaks worthy of scaling appeared on the horizon.

This album was a watershed in the career of a woman who sang so strongly and then appeared to disappear suddenly from the recording world. From the opening lines, 'The whispers in the morning ....', Celine put us on notice that her diminutive size in no way correlates to the sound that flows with what looks like effortless ease--artists know that it is nothing of the kind--from the skinny songstress.

Some found the highly produced quality of this cd worthy of their scorn. But in the tradition of big stage music, Celine's style is - unapologetically - just what it is. When she announced her transition to a grueling feet-on-the-ground commitment to Vegas, no one could be too surprised. She sings from the stage even when there is no stage.

It is difficult to choose the best track on this CD. Certainly 'Next Plane Out' would Compete'. Though laurels may go in the end to 'Love Doesn't Ask Why', that piece--an existential untruth but a marvelous piece of singing--would have to edge out 'I Remember L.A.':

'I remember L.A.'
Seems a lifetime ago
We were stars on Sunset Boulevard
What a move we made

There were days in the sun
That have stayed forever young
Nights when passion was invincible
We thought love would never die

There were moments in that lifetime
That my heart still replays
There were minutes, there were hours
There were days
There are moments I still love you
That same way
When I remember L.A.'

Who can not place themselves in Celine's L.A. with a lover who is now just a memory, though - in moments - a living presence? The almost imperceptible passage from 'were' to 'are' as the heart replays tells the whole story.

It is in conjuring up the colours of love, as she did with such surging prowess, that Celine carved out a place in our memory. A fine album.

5 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up.......2007-02-28

I never listened to Celine Dion's music much. I happened to check this album out from the library and had to go out and buy it after it was returned. This album has just the right mix of sad, slow love songs and up-beat ones. I would buy all of her CD's simply based on this one.

4 out of 5 stars Good Cd....Love/ Romantic Ballads.............2006-12-24

I am a die-hard Celine fan and yes, this cd is mostly romantic/love songs ballads but this Cd does have some variety a little pop and dance ballads (song choice is why its 4/5 stars because there could have been more variety, some of the songs sound the same*).

Yes most of the songs are sappy and that is why a lot of people don't like this cd, but love is what this cd is all about.

Just to point out a few songs on the Cd:

Refuse to Dance(a good violin ballad in background) sounds like A Madonna song, its kind of a dark deep song.

The best song is The Power of Love, Celine's vocals are amazing! It has more of a rock edge to it.

The Colour of My Love is the most romantic song and if you a romantic at heart it could make you cry (some would also find is sappy/cheesy as well).

*Think Twice(excellent guitar ballad in the background), *Next Plane Out and *Only One Road, are very romantic ballads just as *Colour of My Love. All are good.

Remember L.A. is a sad song, remembering back to a previous relationship.

Anyway, this is a good cd to add to your collection just for the Power Of Love alone (the original verison).

WARNING if you are not into sappy songs this cd isn't for you...

After listening to it for awhile it might grow on you (I first thought it was ok and then each time i listened to it I liked it better and better).

That's all for this Album..

2 out of 5 stars Step in the wrong direction.......2005-12-20

I love Celine Dion's music. Even though Mariah Carey is my all-time favorite I still love Celine's incredible voice. However she does have her misses... like this album. I am a huge fan of her Self-titled, "Falling Into You" and "Let's Talk About Love" albums. Unfortuantely I didn't enjoy this. It didn't seem like it was from the heart. it seemed like it was made for mass appeal like her debut album. The only songs I really liked was "The Power of Love"--one of her best singles. I'm being VERY generous for giving this 2 stars. The only reason I'm doing it is because of the "Power of Love." I'd reccomend "Celine Dion", "Falling Into You" or "Let's Talk About Love" over this anyday. D-

4 out of 5 stars Ronnie Pays Tribute.......2006-10-20

This is a great CD! Ronnie pays tribute to his influences such as Carlos Santana (you would swear he was on the CD!), Peter Green and others. The CD is most instruments except for the tender 'Everyday Kind of Man' sung by Greg Allman, a very underrated blues singer. Lots of different styles and tempos on the album. You will not be disappointed. Also check out Ronnie's excellent Language of Soul CD. Nice to see a local boy do so well. Ronnie is certain one of the best blues guitarist out there today. Buy this CD and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars another guitar god.......2003-12-18

Another master class in guitar playing. Ronnie Earl plays a sort of improvisational style of blues / jazz with tinges of SANTANA and other wordly flavours. He may use some familiar phrasings but always infuses them with enough EARL to make them his own.
Some of the songs on this CD seem to be improv sessions and leave the musos with room to move within the loose structure of the compostion, allowing each of these outstanding talents to shine. Just like the listener, these guys are having tons of fun, and isn't that what musik is meant to be all about. Some of the slower pieces bring tears to your eyes, as they are loaded with emotion and RONNIE's guitar is crying in the most pitifull way. If you like the guitar, you simply must have this mans musik. RONNIE EARL is unique in his styling and approach and should therefore be in any guitar fans collection.

5 out of 5 stars An incredibly versatile guitarist.......2001-08-04

Without going into a blow by blow description of every song on this CD, I would like to say that Ronnie Earl is one of the most talented and versatile guitar players I have ever heard. At times he can remind you a bit of Carlos Santana, but most of the time you just think, "Man, I have never heard anything quite like this before". Ronnie is probably best known as a blues guitarist but this work (and some of his others) goes much further, exploring the boundaries where the blues meet jazz. The rest of the players are also top notch. Ronnie seems to recognize this, keeping his playing within the context of the songs and allowing others to stretch out as well. For kicking back and relaxing after a hard week at work or to add just the right touch to a romantic environment, this music is hard to beat. We never leave for a beach vacation without a couple of Ronnie Earl CDs along for the ride.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible album.......2000-10-07

I wish I could sum this album up in one sentence, but I can't. It's so many things: romantic, powerful, intricate, blistering.. Especially appreciated are Anne's Dream, Mother Angel, I Liked That Thing You Did, and Everyday Kinda Man. An amazing album that I never get tired of. Goes very well with Stevie Ray Vaughan (Best of) and Robert Cray (Take Your Shoes off).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Jazz/Blues CD!.......2000-06-30

COLOUR OF LOVE FEATURES AS SPECIAL GUESTS, JAZZMAN HANK CRAWFORD (RECENT CD: CRUNCH TIME) ON SAX, GREGG ALLMAN (ALLMAN BROTHERS) ON B3 AND VOCALS ON ONE SONG, JAI JOHANNY "JAIMOE" JOHANSON (ALLMAN BROTHERS) ON DRUMS AND MARC QUINONES (ALLMAN BROTHERS) PLAYING PERCUSSION.

COMBINING THESE TALENTED MUSICIANS WITH THE BLUES GUITAR OF RONNIE EARL RESULTS IN A REALLY NICE BLUESY JAZZ RECORDING WITH LATIN, ALMOST SANTANA LIKE, OVERTONES. IN FACT, INSTRUMENTALS LIKE "BONNIE'S THEME" WILL HAVE YOU CHECKING THE LINER NOTES TO SEE WHETHER CARLOS SANTANA IS ACTUALLY PLAYING ON THE CD. HE'S NOT!. WHAT YOU WILL SEE HOWEVER, IS THAT EARL DEDICATES THE ENTIRE CD TO CARLOS SANTANA, DICKEY BETTS (ALLMAN BROTHERS) AND JAZZMAN PAT MARTINO ALL OF WHOSE INFLUENCES ARE WEAVED THROUGHOUT THE CD.

IN ADDITION TO THE OVERALL CD DEDICATION THERE ARE INDIVIDUAL NUMBERS DEDICATED TO JIMMIE VAUGHAN, ANNE FRANK, PETER GREEN, KAY LANDRY AND ALBERT COLLINS. THIS CD IS TOP NOTCH AND WILL BE ENJOYED BY BLUES FANS, JAZZ FANS, SANTANA FANS AND PEACH HEADS ALIKE. 5 STARS.

        Album Description

Jefferson was pseudonym for Geoff Turton, ex-lead singer with Midlands beat band The Rockin' Berries. In 1968, he stuck it alone, scoring a UK hit with 'The Colour Of My Love', & a second US hit with 'Baby Take Me In Your Arms' (both of which are included here). The Colour Of My Love contains all Jefferson's recordings for Pye. It begins with a Geoff Turton solo recording before Jefferson's official debut, Jimmy Webb's 'Montage', & then working through later singles & Jefferson's sole Pye album. The album ends with no less than eight previously unissued tracks from an abandoned second Pye album, 'To Love You', 'I've Got The Best Of You', 'One More Mile', 'Aphrodite', 'Do What You Gotta Do', 'I Love You', 'Girl You Are A Woman Now' & 'Halfway To Where'. 27 tracks. 2001.

        2 out of 5 stars Mainstream Pop!.......2007-04-22

I bought this Jefferson collection, because of his past in the great 60's band The Rocking Berries. Unfortunately from the very first tracks, I felt that this was something completely different from the crisp and light feel of the Rocking Berries.

Most tracks are pretty heavily orchestered, and though some songs are actually quite good, most of it sound really dated and of no real significance. Most songs are main-stream pop; a few with a country feel.

Jefferson whose real name is Geoff Turton, has a great voice and did a great falsetto with the Rocking Berries, and he did have a few minor hits as Jefferson, and this collection includes all his Pye singles, his Pye album and track recorded for a never released seond album.

As stated before, there are good songs, but most of them suffer from dated arrangements, and it was a relief to hear the simple arrangement of the traditional ballad "Shenadoah". Probably my favourite track.

Among the previously unreleased tracks "There won't be a way to love you" is quite good. and Turton's own B-side "I've Got to Tell Her" is also above average.

I really disliked the fact that this single was slept on. If it had been given a chance it would have been a larger dance hit and this song would have helped to solitify her pop music fan base in the U.S. This is my favourite single off Amber's debut album. I found the majority of the mixes satifying, especially the pop mix. Get your copy of "Colour of Love" today. I also recommend the following albums: Corona-"The Rhythm of the Night", Bananarama-"Ultra Violet", Rozalla-"Feelin'Good" & "Don't Go Lose It Baby", Abigail-"Feel Good", Kristine W-"Land of the Living", Tina Cousins-"Killing Time",and Robin S.-"From Now On".

          4 out of 5 stars beautiful songs.......2007-05-09

A welcome reissue in CD format from old LP's of Carpenters compositions : song cycles of very well known lyrics. Particularly fascinating are the renderings of poems from "Gitanjali", a collection of poems by Rabindranath Tagore in English translated from original Bengali; a work that got Nobel prize in 1913 (Not the Pullitzer prize as mentioned in th accompanying text). The songs on lyrics/poems by other poets, all americans are just as beautiful. Well done.

5 out of 5 stars A flawless and fascinating recital.......2005-04-14

This 2-CD set by soprano Carole Bogard is an absolute must-have for lovers of American songs, song recitals in general, or great singing. Culled from three long-out-of-print LPs and some performance tapes recorded for broadcast in Europe, it includes songs by Carpenter, Flanagan, Copland, Rorem, and the little-known Richard Cumming and John Woods Duke. And yet, there is not a single weak track on the entire set. Every song is interesting (something that cannot be said for many similar recitals recorded today), and each and every song is performed with musical acuity and an attention to words.

Particularly interesting, to me, were the songs by John Alden Carpenter. Largely neglected by modern singers and scholars, Carpenter wrote what many feel is the most successful fusion of classical music with jazz, the ballet tone-poem "Skyscrapers." It had the misfortune to premiere in 1924, the same year as Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue"; but whereas "Rhapsody" was more of a pastiche, "Skyscrapers" blends the jazz and classical aspects flawlessly, producing an exciting and well-crafted work that deserves a wider audience.

The Carpenter songs presented here are not jazzy, but they do reveal a greater depth of feeling and originality in construction than one hears nowadays from the songs of Andre Previn or Jake Heggie. And the other pieces are equally excellent.

I highly recommend this album, especially for Sunday afternoon or summertime listening...between the excellence of the songs and the excellence of Bogard's singing, you just melt into the music and become one with the warm, intimate feeling that this recital engenders.
