2 out of 5 stars Only worth 1/2 the price.......2007-07-15

I am going to have to contradict Mr. Lex's affection for this release. Disc one is pretty good and at times...really really good (see track #4). However, the BPM gets a little too fast towards the end of this first CD with a very unimpressive last few tracks.
Disc 2 is all trance. It's terrible and therefore makes this release only worth 1/2 the price.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy of Ibiza.......2007-06-25

Eddie Halliwell's genius is primarily housed inside his residency at clubs in Ibiza and on BBC. But his talent has been expanding from these venues; Cream Ibiza 2007 is a full-fledged musical testament to this remarkable DJ's feel for mixing fantastic club music, and while many of the tracks are obviously recognizable, Halliwell performs a musical lobotomy on the lot to create something worth purchasing. I've seen that Ibiza-inspired mix albums are a dime a dozen recently, littering music shelves in stores worldwide; 2007 has proven itself a worthy year for the sounds of Ibiza made for compact disc (honorable mentions go to Azuli's Space Ibiza 2007). As an implicit bonus, both discs include Eddie's exclusive re-edits of selected tracks available only on this compilation thus far.

The atmosphere for a brilliant night out in the clubs takes form from the moment the coy rhythms of M.A.N.D.Y. vs. Booka Shade's classic "Body Language" enter the ear canal. Disc one pumps out a scorching twenty-one tracks, leaving not a dull moment. This is very similar to Steve Porter's "Porterhouse Vol. 2" where many of the tracks are under two minutes long but there remains a sizeable selection of six+ minute tracks as well. Bottom line: No disappointments and no frustrating frills. "High Volume" and "Freak Me" hit hard from the beginning, illustrating one of the most interesting facets of Halliwell's mixing - that there is no unnecessary pretense. As with any decent mix album, there are the inevitable build-ups and breath-catchers. Cream Ibiza 2007, however, employs this formula much differently than the average DJ album would dare to: The first peak, in fact, occurs roughly four minutes into the first disc and each subsequent peak blows my mind with its raw and jubilant intensity!

"Space & Time" lends the introductory hand to the second disc, touching softly on the melodic side of ambience as the introduction crescendos. The second disc is a blistering combination of tech-trance and conventional techno club bangers which not only turn up the heat, but the bass as well (re: "Need To Feel"). Seventeen tracks grace this mix, turning up a potpourri of slightly longer, more ambitious clubbing tracks that certainly do the Cream label a good bit of justice. 4 Strings' "Mainline" introduces a quicker timbre that is as driving as much as it is addictive. Much of the second disc sounds akin to The Thrillseekers' "Nightmusic, Vol. 1": Sonically moving music that soars into the heavens, carrying your mind with it.

I cannot stop moving to this: Cream Ibiza 2007 is probably the best club mix album of the year so far. Eddie's first disc is an unstoppable juggernaut of ecstatic dance floor mania, and it is difficult to put the atmosphere into more proper words. His second disc is a planetarium of wondrous and stunning melodic constellations. Almost every track warrants mention, but there are several that, for me, make the mixes. As far as disc one goes, these include "Freak Me," "Discopolis," "R U Sure?" "Hit Girl" (my personal favorite), "Witchi Tai To," "Volta" and "Faithful Nights." The second disc brings fantastic beats riding on the spines of like-minded tracks including "Mainline," "Open Our Eyes," "Battery," "Fire Devil" and "Volcano." Eddie Halliwell's track selection moves effortlessly between Balearic trance, techno and conventional house to electro-funk and light breaks, lending the soft kiss of coherency to an abundance of scattered EDM styles and producers. Perhaps not worth the enormous price tag ($20 dollars would be more appropriate), but a great album nonetheless in this reviewer's eyes.

Sasha and his fellow turntable conspirators John Digweed and Paul Oakenfeld have been on impressive winning streaks since the mid- to late '90s, particularly with their increasingly popular and influential Global Underground series. This addition to the cycle, a live set recorded in the Spanish dance-music haven Ibiza, comes close to setting a new standard. Sasha is working solo here, and in addition to showing off his prodigious live mixing skills and inventive use of source material, he creates an undeniable identity for himself. Digweed accomplished the same thing with the masterful Bedrock, but where that record was elegantly light and airy, this one burns with a sharper, more manic energy. Throwing out resolute rhythms and melting house samples bathed in dreamy backdrops, Sasha cuts through dense structures and clever transitions with superhuman alacrity. It does take him a little while, as his use of trance-inducing repetition strays a bit while he establishes a groove on the first disc. Disc 2, however, simply tears into an incredibly danceable vibe. Mixing together melodic snippets and varying moods, from the dark trance of "Fibonacci Sequence" to the ecstatic release of "Xpander" (from his EP of the same name), Sasha mainlines rhythm and creativity through to a satisfyingly exhausted conclusion. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2007-07-07

Quite simply.. Disc 1 is timeless perfection. Best absorbed on a beach, headphones on, when its WAY too hot...

Disc 2 is a bit more cheesy, but best sums up the dance music trends at the time..

ENJOY.

NB: don't bother with other mixes if you didn't enjoy this.. its the best DJ in the world, at the top of his game, during the peak of the electronic music scene, at the dance music capital of the world.

MAGIC!

5 out of 5 stars You are going to love this one!.......2007-06-04

I played this CD for months and months. It transitions nicely from one tune to the next. It is great for driving, exercising, dancing etc...lively, wonderful beat, all excellent selections..its a soundtrack for your own mental movie..buy it..youll be glad you did!

4 out of 5 stars Surviving The Test of Time.......2007-03-08

The release date of this popular Global Underground release was 1999. This is right around the time when progressive house and progressive trance genres really started to come into their own. Very fitting that this compilation was modeled after a set performed in the Meca of all electronica venues...Ibiza. It was very "cutting-edge" for the release date and includes Sasha's very own Xpander on disc 2.

Due to electronica's ever-evolving sound, it is hard to find compilations that don't get tiresome after a few years. In my opinion, Global Underground 013:Ibiza is one of these gems. Disc 1 is one of my personal favorites under the Global Underground label. Eight years later and I never tire of it.

Disc 2 is a little more outdated. I don't like the track selection as much, and have a hard time listening to the whole disc in one sitting. Still enjoyable though.

Disc 1 get 5/5 stars and disc 2 4/5 stars.

This compilation is worth possessing for disc 1 alone.

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing achievement for Sasha and the subculture.......2006-12-31

Every dog has his day.
Every DJ has his album.
DJ Sasha found his, preliminarily, with Xpander. He rediscovered himself with Involver. But Ibiza remains his greatest achievement to date, and the proof lies within the brilliant music this man has chosen to present to us, the worthy progressive masses. The recipe for success, in this case is rather simple:
1 Quintessential DJ mixed with 1 Quintessential Trance world locale. Blend, mix and refrigerate. Serves millions.

All cuteness aside, however, this is one truly epic album, and perhaps the greatest achievement of the revered Global Underground series; I think Sasha knew what was expected of him with the release of this double-disc following his wildly popular San Francisco set, and he came through in strides. The typical formula for the GU series is this: Disc one, a bit slower, more patience required, beautiful and majestic yet less danceable, with disc two being the harder-hitting, rave-inducing and generally more well-liked disc. In this sense, Sasha's release is hard to compare with other Global Underground releases.

Disc one is DEEP. Perhaps this is foreshadowed by the titles of the first two tracks? Nonetheless, this disc is one beautiful, powerful and spiritual trip into the psyche. I often meditate to this disc; it's that deep. The tracks are so masterfully crafted, chosen and mixed that where I am in the album in terms of track is no longer any concern. The second half of disc one, while equally and fantastic and mesmerizing, rises the bpm a little and pulsates. Sasha displays a split-personality complex on this first disc, all the while making the two halves seem like a perfectly logical whole.

Disc two is less consistent in terms of the intensity of mood, but by all means this does not make it a lesser disc! This disc is every bit as wonderful as the first and I would challenge anyone to dispute this. "Fibonacci Sequence" has to be one of the most strangely wonderful tracks I have ever heard, with the spoken-word sequence itself oozing in and out of the track. The bass, the beat, everything about this 10+ minute introductory track is impeccable. 'Zoe', 'Perception' and 'The Fly' are very dancable and expertly mixed tracks which blend together in preparation for the one and only 'Xpander' - a beautiful addition to any mix, but especially beautiful when placed in the hands of its creator. He proves he knows exactly how to manipulate not only the work of others, but of himself as well.

Perhaps my favorite part of the entire two-disc set is summed up within the last four tracks on the second disc. Beginning with 'Mercury and Solace' and 'Dreamstate (LSG Mix)' (two tracks that have lulled me to sleep on many an occasion due to their delicate beauty) and 'Heaven Scent' (a Bedrock staple track that I happen to love) finalize this aural apex - but with a twist. Junkie XL's 'Future in Computer Hell (Part 2)', curiously inserted in between Dreamstate and Heaven Scent, is one of the most quintessential breakbeat grooves I have heard in a long, long time. It honestly reminds me of 'Rykketid' or 'One Flew Over The Cocoo's Nest' on Zabiela's Utilities.

The music speaks for itself - like true music should. This is the Five-Star Hotel, the Presidential Suite, the finest Russian caviar of progressive trance mixes, and the cream of the Global Underground crop.

As essential for the 21st century as Renaissance - The Mix Collection was for the 1990s.

~Lex

5 out of 5 stars this IS sasha's masterpiece.......2006-07-24

this guy is an artist in every regard. i truly believe, with the exception of "live at avalon", that every one of his cds is a masterpiece. but if ever there were a "masterpiece", this would be the one that tops the other ones.

    4 out of 5 stars Fierce Angel/Hed Kandi/Mark Doyle Newbie Here.......2006-10-12

I'd read several reviews on Hed Kandi and they made mention of Mark Doyle and moving to Fierce Angel. After some research I picked this album as I was looking for something cutting edge; something to bring me up to speed on the state of dance, trance, and house.

From beginning to end it is very well produced. The transistions are fluid and the song selection makes good sense. The lyrics are intelligent and paint a deliberate picture.

Not being familiar with Mark's style I was pleasantly satisfied with this compilation. Granted that this album is comprised as an annual I feel that it runs a little long. I'm not sure if that's a complaint or not - I've only given it a couple of playthroughs and am on my 3rd - in 24 hours!

    5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2006-09-05

As one of the Hed Kandi fans who have hopped over to Fierce Angel, I have to say that this is one of the most stunning mix albums that I have enjoyed listening to. A person can't go wrong with Mark Doyle's compliations and this mix album is no different. His choices are remarkable and I love listening to both familiar and new artists and songs. This mix is great for anywhere and anyone who wants to hear some great new music. I love listening when I'm working out and when I'm relaxing.

There are three CDs and these with a location and vibe to them. The first CD is called Poolside with some chill tunes from some great artists like Bonnie Bailey, Granddad Bob, and (my new favorite) Bob Sinclar feat. Steve Edwards. Poolside can be compared to Hed Kandi's Serve Chilled. The second CD is called the Base Bar, where the music is more uptempo and can be compared to Hed Kandi's Disco Heaven. The Base Bar CD is my favorite as I love to dance and workout to the rhythms. I have new favorites in artists like Jealousy, Etherfox, the fabulous Bassmonkeys feat. Naomi Marsh, Milk & Sugar, Simmonds & Christoper, Club, and older favorites like FatBoy Silm. Hands down, the Base Bar is the CD I put on for parties. The last CD is called The Electric Cabaret where the music gets nasty and dirty like Hed Kandi's Twisted Disco. Although this genre of dance music is not like favorite, but every now and then when it gets past 3a.m. and it's late, and the clubs are closing, I love to hear the Electric Cabaret. It just gets raw and I love it.

Overall, an excellent mix album that is very much showing to be both superior in taste and selection compared to Hed Kandi these days. The Ministry of Sound didn't improve Hed Kandi very much unfortunately. Very recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar! Mark Doyle continues his musical greatness..........2006-09-05

As was the case with Hed Kandi, when Mark Doyle was at the helm, you could truly do no wrong by picking up anything they put out. Depending upon your preferences (Chill, Back to Love, Beach, Disco, Twisted Disco, etc), you were sure to find nothing but aural bliss.

So true was this with his Tokyo Disco/Project after his departure from Hed Kandi, taking with him artist Jason Brooks and a few dj's as well. Beautiful. His venture which now seems to be entitled Fierce Angel, is no different. The "Beach" set is amazing, but this Es Vive Ibiza set, which was also on Hed Kandi back in the day as well, is nothing short of amazing.

Dare I say, it is worth the price of this package alone just for the first disc. It is absolutely beautiful. I have not heard things of such beauty outside of a Bent cd, or perhaps something by Jose Padilla. Starting with tracks by Granddad Bob, others by Bonnie Bailey, Roger Sanchez, etc...it is all, incredible. Absolutely, completely gorgeous. First listened to it here on South Beach while the sun was still beautifully shining and reflecting off the Atlantic, yet from Miami itself, I could see dark storm clouds rolling in for some afternoon thunderstorms. In sun, in rain, this cd was perfect. So too was it at night, as the lights of downtown Miami began to flicker on from the back view of my rear penthouse balcony. Take a walk to the front of the house and open the doors to the front balcony, and I was met with the semi-moonlit night and the waves of the ocean gently lapping upon South Beach as this set continued to play, never changing the mood at all. Incredible.

Thank Mark Doyle for all you have contributed, and all you continue to contribute, to my life over these many years. It is deeply appreciated. This set is no exception and you will definitely appreciate it should you pick it up. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent CD.......2007-03-15

I love the chill, lounge and downtempo genre (and all the rest of the names for it), and have a very large collection. This CD was exciting right off the bat.

No need for favorites on this CD, just put it in and let it go. There is enough change in type to keep you on the edge the first time you listen to it.

    100% recommended

5 out of 5 stars Great summer lounge music.......2003-06-05

This was the first lounge CD that I ever bought; and I only bought it for the Mr. Scruff track. This compliation was more than I had bargained for and my husband, who has been to Ibiza many times, says that this is a brilliant CD and exactly what to expect there. After that, I bought three more Style CDs.

      Amazon.com

Like your favorite gourmet restaurant, Paul Oakenfold always mixes the familiar with pleasant new twists. On Ibiza, Oakenfold is every inch the vintage progressive house-trance DJ, packing both discs with springboard dynamics, variety, and spice. The first track, "Waiting," is a John Creamer remix of a Nat Monday composition, and it gets the pulse jogging with over 10 minutes of invigorating trance. Depeche Mode chips in with a Danny Tenaglia mix of "I Feel Loved" (different versions of which can be found on the CD single), and Oakenfold contributes his own lush mix of U2's "Beautiful Day." The collection is brought steaming home by Insigma's house-trance driver "Open Your Eyes" and PPK's dramatic but house-fun "ResuRection (Space Club Mix)." Things do get a bit wonky midway through the record's first half, as Radiohead's "Idioteque" is too twee and tart for this mix's overall tone. It takes the freeway-crunching "Transit" by Arena to bring Ibiza back into comfortable contextual territory. Nobody manages to pack clubs worldwide like Oakenfold, and when he's really trying, nobody can pack a club into two discs and a plastic box like Oakenfold, either. On Ibiza, the man put some elbow grease into his mixing board. --Steffan Chirazi

      Album Description

Hot from scoring the hit Hollywood film 'Swordfish', world-class progressive trance DJ, Paul Oakenfold returns with what is set to be his finest double CD mix set to date. Inspired by the hedonistic yet spiritual vitality of the Mediterranean paradise island known as Ibiza, Oakenfold transports you to ecstatic new heights with choice selections and his signature ultra-smooth mixing.

      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Any album that promotes the word Ibiza = cheese..........2005-02-04

Even though Oakey is making a strong comeback with his latest album "Creamfields" (highly recommended), this album, along with Bunkka, typifies why this extrodinary DJ has received a very bad rap of late. Don't get me wrong, I love Oakenfold, but his meteoric success has the unfortunate effect of selling out artistry for commercialism. Since 2001 or so, Oakey has become more of a franchise than a DJ, selling pop remixes, soundtracks to Playstation games, and hobknobing with the likes of Justin Timberlake and U2. I can understand why many of his fans abhor him for trying to make a buck at the expense of quality.

Ibiza is substandard Oakey, with cheesey songs and average technique. It sometimes makes me wonder, if an amatuer DJ would have cut this set, would it be called "brilliant"? However, since this ablum is from Mr. O, he has to present us with a gem everytime. Anything less is cheese. Oakenfold and Tiger Woods suffer the same malaise of extreme public expectation.

I also want to take note and ask why are record labels slapping "Ibiza" on everything that is related to dance?? A once-unknown island getaway for E-trippers and Euro-candyravers is now the self-appointed Mecca of dance music?? Just because an album has Ibiza on it does NOT guarantee a masterpiece. In fact, I steer clear from any album that mentions any reference to Ibiza. Otherwise, I am in for a guaranteed chedder-fest.

I am so glad that Oakey has reinvented himself and is returning to his roots and craftmanship. Although Bunkka, Ibiza, Great Wall, and Swordfish all represent a watered-down, commercial doppleganger of Oakenfold, these albums nevertheless are an important transition period in the history of the world's most influential DJ of all-time.

If you are following the chronology of Oakenfold, do yourself a favor, get everything from 1994-2001, especially the Cream sets, ending with Travelling (excellent CD BTW), skip everything after that, and start over with Creamfields. Your ears will respect you in the morning.

I saw Oakey live recently at a Tsunami benefit. Da brotha still got it!

5 out of 5 stars another strong mix album.......2004-05-18

Oakenfold has been called the world's greatest DJ. Now this mix album may not be as great as Another World of Swordfish but its hard to beat those mixes. I also may be one of the few that really liked how he through some Radiohead into the mix. I think the song just fits for some reason. His mixing is untouchable, as well as his song selection. I highly recommend this album to further your Oakenfold mix album collection. Another strong mix that shows you why he stands above the other DJs. Some of you may not like his song selection but that is what makes Oakenfold himself. What is an Oakenfold mix without some wierdness thrown in? Anyways, get it and enjoy it. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars this is my fevrite cd.......2003-12-25

i dont know how all of you people can not like this cd this cd is gread it has a lot of great songs so to anyone that doesint have it should get it.

2 out of 5 stars Where is Paul & what have you done with him??.......2003-07-22

OUCH. Was he trying to sell out, go for a pop chart hit?

Boring. Really bad singing & sampling. Annoyingly simple techno that starts with nothing and goes nowhere. I am heavily dissapointed. Disc 2 is slightly better, but I found I could not make it through most tracks. Paul Oakenfold has some great CDs, but this is not one of them.

      3 out of 5 stars Hmm....I don't know.......2003-07-18

I liked the CD and as mentioned, it grows on you. There were only two songs that I really can call my favorites: CD1;track 8;Maas Attacks and CD2:track 11;ResuRection (space club mix). Maas Attacks is really unique and very spooky. And ResuRection (space club mix) really does make you feel like you are in space. But that is just me, you might like the rest more!
Gotta love P. Oakenfold though, the songs may not be his usual, but he does a great job DJing.

This compilation is wonderful. It's one of those albums that you grow to enjoy more, each time you pop it in the CD player. Some of the songs do grow on you, but overall each tune is seductive, soulful, and can easliy be enjoyed by the pool or on the dance floor.

I am very happy with this compilation, and think it is one of the best Hed Kandi projects to date. I'm still waiting for the newest installment of their Beach House series, but Es Vive will hold me over until it is released.

My favorite tracks on the album are:

        CD 1
        Track 06- Seacruise
Track 03- Magpie (Morgan Geist Remix)
        Track 10- All Right

        CD 2
        Track 02- Sweet
Track 04- The Way I feel
        Track 03- Dreams

You won't be disappointed with this purchase!

'Chilled and Funky Poolside Lounging' - Now there is a term that really
        paints the right picture.
From the very first bars of 'Can't they be good' by Fenomenon' - you are
given that rare quality-chilled vibe and this continues through the next 4
tracks (including At Night - Shakedown mix & READY by Charles Webster -
        WOW!!)
The production this compilation is of a very high standard.

Then it gently gets funkier and funkier until Soulweekender.
CD 1 is a triumph and easily stands on its own.

CD2 starts where CD1 left off.
Again this is excellent - Happiness if free - Onda Music.
The tempo is kept up for the next 4 tracks.
What's On your mind by Mr. O is a SPECIAL number and funky in the extreme
        without being hard.
(remember we are poolside lounging here)
From here the funk remains but it gets gentler and mellower
Track after track - chilled and funky.

        Amazing.
Till you are hit with the intro to Twisted by the pool - FAC 15.
At the end of this track there is only one thing to do - Find CD1 and put it
        right back on.

There are numerous IBIZA chill albums out there and it is hard to choose and
you have to beware of fakes with nice CD covers.
This is one designed to reflect the mood of a particularly chilled place.
It is selected by Mark Doyle who has a GREAT track record doing this. The
        tracks perpetuate the mood.
Do not be deceived - don't fall for cheaper (or more expensive imitations)
        GET Es Vive!!

I have given this as a present several times and have recommended it to
friends who have bought it - ALL have thanked me afterwards and are
amazed that so much quality music is to be found in one package.
Buy it - find some sun and a pool (simulate if you must) and ENJOY some
        'Poolside Lounging'.

        4 out of 5 stars Great....but something is missing.......2002-08-23

But, not enough to cause serious damage. Es Vive is a new compiliation series started by Hed Kandi which provides great marketing for a new hotel opening this year in Ibiza by the same name.

Es Vive starts off strong with Fenomenon's "Can't They Be Good". Deep, dark, soulful house music always gives me goosebumps and this track certainly fits the bill. CD 1 continues on with good choices from Afterlife (a Hed Kandi-label artist) and Crazy Penis's "Mind Wide Open." Things start to pick up with Rupeski's "Dreaming about Tomorrow", a nice neo-disc groove that has just enough punch to gently arouse you from the lounging done during the previous tracks. An unusual track is Playgroup's "Pressure". It stands out because it contains a sample from "Sunshine and the Rain" by Joi's first and now out of print album "Pendulum Vibe". Other than that, the track doesn't really impress me. However, my disappointment is halted by Black Science Orchestra's "Soul Weekenders Mix". Black Science Orchestra has been a long time favorite of mine and this upbeat, funky, and diva-singing track tells me why.

CD 2 starts out fine with Onda Music's Happiness is Free". This track found its way to Es Vive from the Naked Music label. Nice, smooth, and jazzy track that speaks of the virtues of free happiness. Lydia Rhodes' remake of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" is definitely worth mentioning. This classic rock gem was successfully turned into a dark, progressive house floor mover. I love the original version of "Dreams", but I'm equally pleased with this remake. Another fave track is Moments of Soul's "Delicious". A deep house groove with the repetitous refrain "Your Love is Delicious" is certainly entertaining. However, this will where the CD starts to lose something. Besides what I have mentioned here, there's nothing else that stands out on this CD. I have already forgotten much of the music. The music on this CD is missing the panache that are common on other Hed Kandi releases. And when this CD is compared to last year's "Base Ibiza", it does fade a bit in comparison.

However, you won't waste your money if you buy this CD. It still has enough going for it to warrant attention. It's just, for myself, I feel that's something is missing.
