Beers Steers & Queers

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Hang on to those bullhorns, cowboys and cowgirls: Beers, Steers and Queers is a raucous, raunchy kick in the shorts. Featuring tongue-in-cheek lyrics grilled in industrial marinade, this is Revolting Cocks at their best. The genre-defining industrial band is nonetheless lyrically atypical: the verses are written like dirty jokes on a bathroom wall, but the music is never ignored. This is naughty industrial music meatier than a 16-ounce sirloin. --Beth Bessmer

4 out of 5 stars Texas is the place!!!!!!.......2006-12-15

This just rocks. I was already a Ministry fan when I had heard of Revolting Cocks, originally from "Beers, Steers, & Queers" that was on an 80s compilation from a dance club I had frequented during the 90s. I wasn't cool (or old enough, heh) to be apart of the late 80s WaxTrax days in Chicago, & didn't live there either. Then, after figuring out my favorite Ministry is the middle Ministry, all these RevCo albums were right up my alley. It often feels to me like this is happy music for pissed off people, heh. Some songs are dancey, some are really aggressive, & the others, you're just not sure where to put em. Either way, if you're in a bad mood but still have enuff energy, this will suit... it you're REALLY mad at the world, you might have to put on another Ministry album (think Psalm 69) cuz this might be too toe-tapping & 'dancey' at times. Another interesting note: if you're not sure whether or not to get this or the original Beers Steers & Queers, get THIS one because it has "Cattle Grind" (which apparantly is noted here as previously unreleased), & "At the Top", which are both missing from that one... but these are a couple of the better songs.

"In the Neck" - will make you wanna raise your head & your arms to the sky & shout along. "Cattle Grind" makes you feel like you're in a fast-paced horror flick or a White Zombie video... or both. Yes, I'm well aware this was before WZ even became known to the mainstream, but you can definitely hear where 90s industrial/metal bands like NIN & WZ got their influence from (& interesting to note that there's a pic w/ a VERY young Trent Reznor on the back of this cd! however, I'm not sure if/how he was involved w/ RevCo on this particular compilation). "Stainless Steel Providers" is definitely club friendly, 1 of my favorites here... I love dancey songs, so sue me :-P "Something Wonderful" feels more 'Ministry-ish' of all of these here. If you're still wondering why you "Can't Sit Still" by the next track, it's cuz your foot is getting tired of tapping. Then your ears are addicted to the bassline on "At the Top", the slowest song here... but 1 of my faves. The last 2 tracks are good, but can be tiring at the same time... & like another reviewer pointed out, can get a little monotonous. Plus, I never listen to all 3 BSQ versions in 1 sitting. I'm not always in the mood for this cd, but when I am, it's the best sounding thing to blast out of my speakers... loudly, of course. Other Ministry releases also worth checking out, if you haven't already: The Land of Rape & Honey, The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste, & esp. if you're a Ministry completist, the newer released Side Trax compilation.

revco, buck satan, phildo, van acker..

these guys simply rule, they started the birth of all things industrial, hard and fast, delectably wretched. buy this CD now, and you will be pleased

"Greatly to be praised"
REVCO forever!

Oh, go to a live show NOW.

4 out of 5 stars a lot of fun.......2005-02-05

Who would have guessed? I turn a friend on to "Throbbing Gristle," and she turns around and introduces me to this CD. I was more than impressed.

If you like the hard, steady rhythm of industrial and the unpredictability of punk, you should love this album. I fail to give it a five star rating because the music (borderline) starts to sound the same after numerous songs. Nonetheless, turn up the volume and give your subwoofer a work out.

I will be purchasing more of their music; it's that much fun.

5 out of 5 stars Its About Time!!!.......2004-10-16

I first heard this album back when I was in high school. I'd already been listening to Ministry for a few years, and a friend of mine asked if I'd ever heard of The Revolting Cocks. Needless to say, I was floored when I heard it and found out it was a Ministry side project. Of course I bought the tape, and listened to it for many happy years until someone stole it. Now its available again, along with all the other older releases, thanks to RykoDisc and Grandpa Jourgenson, so us old farts and a new generation of fans can enjoy the entire spectrum of Al and companys musical genius.

5 out of 5 stars Beers Steers & Queers ~ Revolting Cocks.......2005-05-15

Revolting Cocks is one of Alain Jourgensens many side projects and its amazing, weird, disturbing and stupendous at the same time. The lyrics are filled with rage, venom and anger. Alain Jourgensen is as crazy as ever and he has written something quite special. Tracks such as beer, steers and quuers, stainless steel providers and (Lets get) Physical are all really well done. The cover for this album is very nice and presents some of the members on what looks like an old roman coin and the book-let is sparse yet the logotype is well done and not as odd or strange as other Jourgensen albums.

5 out of 5 stars i love this album.......2002-10-07

it's weird i like it. if you know me, you'd think i'd get bored listening to it because there really isn't a lot of change in the music. it's just real beat and groove heavy industrial. one long steady sound you can rock out to while you do stuff. i love it and you should get it.

3 out of 5 stars I remember standing in line for this one!.......2002-07-30

The single and remix for the title track had been getting good play in the clubs and bars of Chicago since Xmas '89, and we all waited in line on Lincoln Avenue for Wax Trax to open on the day the LP was released. Chris Connely was onhand and signing those white "RevCo World" Tshirts. He wrote "Keep playing with Cocks" on mine. The album may have been their last worth buying as the whole scene fizzled out by the next Spring. Highlights of the album are the studio version of "In The Neck" which had been a live staple for several years and the LP mix of "Physical". The artwork was great and I remember this as being the first Wax Trax recording offered on Compact Disc, but maybe it was just the 1st that I bought!

5 out of 5 stars Rare gem of early industrial music..........2002-06-25

This album is worth having for the title track alone! But I find that on a whole it speaks for itself and a time that cannot be repeated. Nuff said.

5 out of 5 stars weirder with time.......2000-02-16

I just realized that these classic Wax Trax records - and this is one of the best of them - are sounding weirder and weirder as time goes by. Part of it is that the sound is gone: No one is making records that sound anything like Beers, Steers & Queers anymore. So it sounds dated, but in a ghostly surreal way. As extreme musical beats have moved to the DHR style, or the urban hip-hop style, putting on an old Wax Trax Luxa/Pan album is like coming across a deserted ship lost at sea, whose crew had murdered one another in a fit of rum and scurvy.

If you never paid attention to this kind of music, or it happened before your time, check this disc out, and get a taste of what it was like at to hang out at the Exit in Chicago in 1991.
