BBD [Explicit Lyrics]

"We sellin' like Bon Jovi," Ronnie DeVoe drawls on BBD's "Scandalous." This is typical pop hype, but Bell Biv DeVoe should be happy their lyrics weren't screened by fact checkers. BBD (Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and DeVoe) hasn't clocked platinum units since their 1990 debut, Poison. Back then the trio, an offshoot of '80s superstar boy group New Edition, laced smooth harmonies to rugged beats and misogynist lyrics, making their first one of the best (and most widely imitated) R&B records of the era. After the moderately successful '93 follow-up, Hootie Mack, Bell Biv DeVoe are back, trying to appeal to an audience that's now saturated with thugged-out Romeos and has no idea how groundbreaking the trio was. Sadly, BBD does their legacy little good with this lackluster effort. Now in their 30s, Bell, Biv, and DeVoe still think the lady is a tramp, but while they once spit out their sex-you-ups with a bad-boy bite, new cuts like the thumping "Dance B----" just sound bitter. The vibe is better when the trio lets the love flow, as on the silky "I Ain't Going Nowhere," which proves BBD can still make the females swoon. --Amy Linden

3 out of 5 stars Good effort despite the explicit, steamy themes.......2006-03-13

I thought this album by Bell Biv Devoe was good, but not as good as Poison or Hootie Mack. Most of the songs continue the wild themes displayed on Poison, but there are some very funky, danceable, bass heavy songs to match with the steamy lyrics. It's closer to what Prince was doing on his first few Warner Bros. albums with the sexy themes. Pesos is the best of this album's kinds of songs. But they also slow it down with a few ballads written and produced by members of R&B group Jagged Edge. This album didn't do well against the heavy music competition. And one problem--everybody had toned down in their music content while the trio was still laying it thick on their over the top MENTAL(!) sounds. For longtime fans, BBD still gives you what you want, so get it! For the newbies not into BBD's sound, you should pass on this effort and get something else.

3 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking.......2004-09-29

Firstly, I'll say this: The piano-driven dance track "Breezy" is just about the tightest track these guys have ever done. And had it been the first single, I think this album would have taken off. Unfortunately, "Da Hot S*** (Aight)" feels like it barely even features BBD, and *those* are the voices the fans want to hear. There's good stuff here. The previously mentioned "Breezy" is as good as BBD gets, and "In My Crib" features great guest vocals by Ralph Tresvant. "I Ain't Going Nowhere" isn't as hopelessly romantic as the "Poison" album's "I Do Need You," but it does the job well enough. The production here is tight, and the vocal performances are awesome. (There are moments in the album's opener, "Sic Wit It," that will give you chills to hear the BBD voices in action again.) What ultimately kills this album for me is the lyrical content, which is often so filthy that it feels silly. Had better lyrics been married to the vocal performances and beats, "BBD" would have been an R&B album with broad appeal. I think BBD tried too hard to be like today's acts, when they were *always* good enough just the way they were. As far as I'm concerned, this was worth the full price I paid just to get "Breezy" on disc. It's got the humor and the self-deprecating flow of BBD's best, and proves that they've still got it. I can't wait to hear the new New Edition record, "One Love," that comes out next month.

4 out of 5 stars Decent to Good.......2003-01-26

Athough it is not as good as their previous albums, it is like 3 steps above the songs from B2K. This album is more on the hardcore rap side than the R&B side. This cd has a decent set of tracks and vocals are good. Well, it is better this cd be explicit than "boy band" corny. This is suggested to from of hip-hop/R&B rap & long time fans. I also like that they don't overuse their sexiness like some other r&b groups.

1 out of 5 stars Not Hot.......2002-08-11

I don't know what BBD was thinking. Maybe they needed some extra money or whatever. This CD seems like it was put together sloppily. The beats are wack and their lyrics are even wacker. Upon purchasing it, I thought I would hear some solid tracks from an R&B group. Well, I was wrong. But, like on every CD, there seems to be 1 or 2 tracks that are worth listening to. And those 2 tracks are: the mid-tempo ballad "I Ain't Going Nowhere" and "In My Crib". The latter track was produced by Brandon and Brian from Jagged Edge and features Ralph Tresvant on guest vocals. So please, if you want to waste your money on a comeback album that should have been properly pre-paired, be my guest and buy this album. But if you want some good music from a male R&B group, check out Jagged Edge's album along with the new one from Ruff Endz.

5 out of 5 stars APPEALING!.......2002-06-30

The new album from Bell Biv DeVoe is most satifying . As much as some people may hate , this is a gerat cd that will satisfy people that love hip-hop/ r&b . It has hip-hop that is not too overbearing in hardcore material and only 1 really smooth r&b song towards the end . The things they do best are making highly cohisive efforts that become better with each successive effort and perfectly conforming the musical and fashion style of the time without sounding or looking phony . This effort is best suited to those who like hip-hop/r&b and hardcore rap which the album consists of . This album has gained new fans of the group like myself so go and get this and it true fan the can appreciate their work . I don't only love their music ,I love their sex appeal as well . So,in closing , don't hate ,congratioulate these sexy & talented men who are putting it down for people with staying power in the music industry . They will be with us for many years to come. SIGNED MUSIC FAN.

5 out of 5 stars Believe it !.......2002-02-20

I sometimes think we expect too much from things. I must admit that I thought "Jackie Brown" was a poor follow up to "Pulp Fiction" and that the "Any Love" album was an OK follow up by Luther after "Give Me The Reason". Only when you take a step back, can you actually see things in their true light. Jackie Brown isnt poor and Any Love is a quiet storm "must have".
I nearly fell off my chair when I heard that BBD were dropping a new album. So many years have passed since "HootieMack", so many R&B developments have been made........ can you imagine the anticipation?
Well upon hearing this new album, I was blown away. It's as simple as that. This album is HEWGE !
You can forget the slow "I Aint Goin Nowhere" cos the rest of the tracks are fast bangers.
If an unknown group had debuted with this album, the world of R&B would be on their knees.
Its certainly not an album to play in front of your lady but then again you wouldnt play a Maxwell album in your jeep with the boys !
This is strictly for the fella's. It's hard it's fast and it dont apologize for that.
Believe it........... this is enorm !
In My Crib, Home Alone, Da Hot ... and Since I Blew are my top 4 bangers off a scorching set.
Now as Raphael said..... get involved.
