This debut revolutionized hip-hop (and launched half a dozen solo careers), as much for The RZA's raw barrage of off-kilter, off-key loops and sound effects as for its elliptically violent lyrics. Martial arts--at least as they appear in kung fu movies--are the Wu-Tang Clan's favorite metaphor, but they're also the organizing principle of the group, a crowd of eight rappers, each with his own way-out-there "fighting style." They created their own little self-contained culture, with its own symbols and shifting identities, and let listeners figure it out for themselves. Unless you're willing to immerse yourself in its world, it can be baffling and a little dry, but its aggression and originality are undeniable. --Douglas WolkAlbum Description

As the New York Times put it when Danny Elfman's Serenada Schizophrana was performed live at Carnegie Hall in February 2005: "Better good Hollywood music than second-rate Brahms." Elfman, better known for his soundtracks to Tim Burton movies, had been commissioned by the American Composers Orchestra to write a concert work, and the Serenada Schizophrana in six movements was the result. It appears here under the baton of John Mauceri, known for his crossover work with Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Fans of Elfman's soundtracks won't be disappointedor even very much surprisedby this venture into the concert hall. The composer's style remains very much the same, probably because his habitual orchestrator, Steve Bartek (whose contribution is crucial to Elfman's sound), worked on four movements, with Edgardo Simone handling the remaining two. Blending Bernard Herrmann, Duke Ellington, Max Steiner, and especially JG Thirlwell (a.k.a. big-band industrialist Foetus), Elfman has come up with an audience-friendly piece that actually sounds more convincing than similarly high-reaching works by Paul McCartney or Elvis Costello.--Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:
A soundtrack without a movie.......2007-06-27
Commissioned by the American Composers Orchestra, this symphonic piece gave the former Oingo Boingo frontman a new challenge -- working without the visual cues of a movie to inspire him. But, while the resulting tracks are entertaining on an aural level, they still sound like a soundtrack to me. And, without my own visual memories to accompany the music, my imagination filled them in -- I mostly saw scenes of Johnny Depp emoting or the stop-action hijinks of a skellington at play. Appropriately, it was later picked for use as a soundtrack for the IMAX film, Deep Sea 3D.
So really, it's simple. If you enjoy Elfman's soundtrack work, get this and you'll love it. If you think soundtracks should only be heard in the background of a film, skip this or get yourself to an IMAX theater for a little underwater exploration with narrators Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet and, of course, Elfman.

Danny Elfman's masterpiece..........2007-02-14
This orchestral suite showcases Elfman's versatile influences and he sounds better than ever. Sometimes dark, other times playful with more quiet and subtle parts, this was a completely different project than his usual film scores. He had a lot of freedom for this symphony and it shows. Serenada is divided in 7 movements and contains a bonus track.
If some of the cuts sound familiar, it's because it was heavily featured in last year's Imax film Deep Sea 3D, narrated by Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet. It fit perfectly well with the mysterious underwater world unfolding in 3D on the oversized screen.
If you're a fan of Elfman's, you'll love Serenada. If you love movie scores, chances are you'll enjoy it too. The only downside with this CD has nothing to do with its content, but rather with its encoding. This is a SACD (Super Audio CD) and therefore will not be playable on your computer. It is designed for super audio players so you might want to check if your CD player can play it. It plays fine on mine and on my DVD player. The sound quality is much clearer than your average CD, but I find it disappointing that I'm not able to listen to this great suite on my IPod. Still, it's well worth it for the opening track alone!

Given RZA's work on both the Ghost Dog and Kill Bill soundtracks, it's no surprise to see the venerable Wu-Tang producer tackling Afro Samurai. However, unlike the previous albums, where RZA more or less created scores, the Afro Samurai soundtrack is a mix of instrumental and conventional rap songs, featuring an eclectic mix of MCs, including Talib Kweli, GZA, True Master, and RZA himself. There are some strange tracks here, none more so than the maple syrupy R&B songs featuring Stone Mecca or Baby. The instrumentals, removed from the context of the movie, are themes rather than fully fleshed out songs but a few, like "Afro's Father Fight" are tantalizingly fast, furious, and funky. The rap songs hold some surprises, such as Q-Tip popping up on "Just a Lil Dude," or veteran Big Daddy Kane sparking off the dramatic "Cameo Afro." Fans of RZA's past albums, especially his Bobby Digital projects, will find Afro Samurai to their liking, but for those expecting a classic Wu-Tang album, they might be left lost in the oft-jarring mix of sounds. --Oliver WangCustomer Reviews:

Before it was cool to be an evil genius, RZA was doing it; in fact, he's arguably the man who set the blueprint for emcees like MF DOOM and the various bugged-out personas Kool Keith would adopt later in his career. It's because of RZA that I even listen to hip-hop today, and I'm eternally indebted to Rakeem for introducing me to my favorite genre. So, it comes as no surprise that I was eagerly awaiting the release of the first entirely(well, for the most part) RZA-produced album since 2003's Birth of a Prince. However, the soundtrack concept is a gift and a curse with this release.

By this long-delayed, massively anticipated album, the Wu had become less a crew than a small country, with dozens of central and auxiliary members, and rap styles so twisted they seem like another, private language. Without even a hint of anything for radio or casual listeners to latch onto, Wu-Tang Forever sprawls out for nearly two hours, and--taken as pure sound--it's about the most avant-garde No. 1 album ever, with deliberately bizarre production (out-of-tune and off-rhythm loops, even what sounds like a string quartet) and relentless torrents of cryptic, furious words. It demands repeated listens and careful attention to begin penetrating the mysteries of this dense, passionate, unique piece of work. --Douglas WolkCustomer Reviews:
"The Saga continues...Wu Tang...Wu Tang".......2006-04-08
The Good
-Some of the tracks on this album are just amazing and can almost be put it up with the 36 chambers. RZA really put on alot of effort into making Wu Tang Forever a Classic and he did exactly that.
-Not only are the tracks amazing but RZAs beats are just ON POINT and perfect(especially "As High as Wu Tang Gets"). I just cant stop ranting on how well made these beats are. "Reunited" is a perfect example. RZA put together one of the best hip hop beats ever! Ive never ever heard the violen sampled so freaking well in a rap song!!!
-Masta Killa and U-God finally make there pressance felt in FOREVER! Sadly that was really the only flaw in 36 Chambers which was that 2 of the members(Masta Killa and U God)barley had any thing to say in that album, hell Masta Killa only raps in ONE Song(not to mention he has a really short line! Same gos for U God!). But fortunatley this is where FOREVER fixes the mistake that they had in the first album. SO YES you do get hear alot(trust me alot more then the last album)more of these 2 not to mention they drop some really amazing lines. Did I mention Masta Killa is my 2nd fav Wu Member?..
-Triumph....Its simple...amazing beats...every wu tang member leaving a mark to be made...nuff said
Now..
The Bad
-Maria?, Dog%$^ What is this!?! These tracks are just straight up WACK! Yes you heard me! Some of these tracks are just...NOT GOOD. C'mon now you guys no better then that! I really really tried getting into these but as hard as a I try I just cant get into these tracks which is why this album is a step below there first album :/
-RZA! WHAT HAPPEND. Which is what came to me in a few tracks. Some tracks are just really hard to get into and a pretty hard listen. Not just listen wise but beatwise there just not balanced and i really couldnt get into them especially tracks like BLAC SHAMPOO(WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!!!) Just like some of the tracks the beats are just straight up wack(like one of the last tracks)
-Sadly RZA didnt produce every song in this album :/
-There is Little to No appearance from my fav wu member of all the Genious GZA! He made such a name for himself in tracks like "Clan in Da Front" and now we barley even hear from him! I think hes only in like what, 3 tracks on disc one and almost none in disc 2! Same gos for O.D.B. Both O.D.B and GZA barley have anything to say in this album(and im not counting the tracks with O.D.B like Maria because those tracks are just plain bad)..seriously this dissapoints me. You guys finally make U-God and Masta Killa make them selves feel welcome in FOREVER but now you guys have to cut short on O.D.B and GZA? Give me a freaking break, though I won't deny it they do have there moments(especially "As High as Wu Tang Gets"..
-Just to put it for the record I hate CappaDonna..
The Ugly
-"Black Shampoo"...nuff said..
-Why did they make U-Gods solo song so HORRIBLE! Blackshampoo is just...BAD!...totally bad and somewhat cuddley beats mixed with U Gods awesome voice just seems really unbalanced. Its as if youre mixing Method mans voice to...ok ill shut up now
Now how did I feel about the tracks?...

all fillers ignored, however, this album is just killer. triumph, the #1 hit single features every member (odb only doing the intro tho). reunited, the street single, is my personal favorite on the album. rza innovates a little with violin loops instead of his usual keys and it turns out to be dope. odb and gza drop some of the best verses on the album on that song. gza and raekwon also kill on severe punishment with some funny kung-fu samples, and rza's production is top notch on songs like heaterz. deadly melody showcases masta killa's haunting rhyming skill over rza's usual eerie piano loops with tight verses from meth and ghostface too. as high as wu-tang gets is another one of the standout tracks, with meth and gza (probably the best wu members to work together as seen on shadowboxin' from liquid swords) rhyming over a funky rza beat with a dope bassline and a fun singing chorus from odb.
overall this album is one of the best from the 90s and an excellent sophomore attempt from the whole clan, not innovating too much but still offering something different from their first album. unfortunately their next 2 albums almost completely ditch the old wu-tang style and now they're just above-average rappers instead of the supergroup they once were.

man, where do i start on this album? at first, when i bought it about a year ago, i didn't like it much. but after a while it grew on my and then i instantly became a Wu-addict, i went and got all the solo's i could find, bought the DVD when they were in San Bernadino, bought the CD to that and finally Rza's book, which is mighty awesome i might add. if you're a hi-hop fan, you'll buy this...if you claim youre a hip hop fan and buy Nelly, you need to jump off a cliff.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The Wu-Tang Clan have slimmed down on their lean and mean third album, both in title and in content. Clearly having learned a lesson from the ostentatious affair that was their last group effort, Wu-Tang Forever, The W weighs in at a taut 13 tracks, with little, if any, extraneous self-righteous solipsism. RZA returns to the boards for all but one track and proves that Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) was no fluke, manipulating ghoulish soul to chilling effect on "Hollow Bones" and dropping (and chopping) thunderous horns at the intro to "One Blood Under W" (which features a stellar turn from reggae don Junior Reid). The album's first two singles--"Protect Ya Neck (The Jump Off)" and "Gravel Pit"--are both fierce, propulsive numbers, inspiring the Wu collective--Ghostface Killah and Method Man in particular--to higher energy levels than they've displayed in years. Elsewhere, The W is Ghost's record, especially on the unhinged lament "I Can't Go to Sleep" and the prostrate plea "Jah World." Memorably, Snoop and ODB collaborate to comic effect on "Conditioner," and all the album's cameos--from Redman and Nas to Isaac Hayes and Busta Rhymes--show that the group is still as savvy as ever. On The W, the boasting is earned. --Jon CaramanicaCustomer Reviews:
Reviewers are f***ing stupid (2.5 stars).......2006-11-28
What?? Do they even listen to hip-hop? That album is so much better than this, I'm glad there's 2 discs of it. Wu-Tang Forever is a straight Wu banger, The W is where things start to get weird. Why? Cause it's from late 2000, almost 2001 of course, & Wu-Forever is from '97. More or less there's your answer, & the secret to finding & obtaining only the best hip-hop. Not that there weren't some dope releases in 2000, Kweli dropped his classic album w/Hi-Tek - Train of Thought by Reflection Eternal, Afu-Ra dropped a killer album, the D.I.T.C. cd came out then I think. But a lot of rappers were starting to slow down & deteriorate by the turn of the millenium & the Wu-Tang Clan as a whole are one of them. Some of the s*** on here is really weird, & you can tell by the album cover & the guest appearances this just isn't your good ol' Wu-Tang.

My Intro to Hip Hop.......2006-07-05
After seeing the video for "Triumph" a few times, I knew that The Wu were dope. I didn't realize it at the time, but "Triumph" actually changed my whole perspective of hip hop. To this day, I believe that this song is the best posse cut ever. Inspectah Dek and Method Man jump start this song with incredible back to back verses, and the beat is epic. I've heard this song hundreds of times, but I still get amped whenever it's playing. Everyone spits a good verse on this song, and the energy of the track is incredible.
"It's Yourz" is another classic. This is a great closing track for disc 1. Similar to "Triumph", this song has a lot of energy. It also has a great hook. This time it's The Rza and Inspectah Dek who lace the track with the most memorable verses.
A lot of people hate on this cd, but I don't understand why. Although "Wu-Tang Forever" is not anywhere near as raw as "36 Chambers", it is definitely more lyrical. I don't agree with all these filler complaints either. I have listened to both of these discs repetitively for nearly a decade, and the only tracks I skip aren't actual songs.
My favorite tracks include:
Disc 1
Reunited-great verses from The Gza and Meth
Visionz-great Production from The Rza
Older Gods-love the beat and Ghostface's verse
It's Yourz-see Inspectah Dek verse
Disc 2
Triumph-The Anthem
Little Ghetto Boys-one of Cappadonna's more memorable verses
Hellz Wind Staff-dope song w/ martial arts vibe
Heaterz-another great beat courtesy of The Rza
The Last Words: Classic cd. It honestly changed my life.

In the beginning, soundtracks to Biblical movies adhered to a Hollywood template with more fidelity than most people attend to the Ten Commandments. The first commandment of Biblical film scores was: "Thou shalt render orchestral grandeur unto the epic as did Elmer Bernstein on The Ten Commandments and Miklos Rozsa on Ben-Hur." Peter Gabriel's score to The Last Temptation of Christ, released as Passion, changed all that like the Second Coming. His mix of world-music elements, wailing singers, and otherworldly electronics prevailed, influencing countless film scores and emulated to almost plagiaristic perfection by John Debney's soundtrack for The Passion of the Christ. Mychael Danna departs from that path on The Nativity Story, the 2006 film interpretation of Mary's journey. His sound is more medieval and classical than Middle Eastern. Rather than blowing Turkish duduks à la Gabriel and Debney, he uses recorders and wood flutes. He likes building from simple folk themes to extravagant expanses where a lone flute segues into a sweeping string arrangement that morphs into slowly cascading voices. He taps into Gregorian chant and plainsong, and even when he uses Persian vocalist Azam Ali (from Vas and Niyaz), he has her singing an Abbess Hildegard-style hymn called "Nazareth." But this is a Hollywood Biblical epic and Danna bends to another commandment of the genre: "Thou shalt wring tears and awe-inspired wonder." You don't need to see the film to know that the heavens must be opening--as they only do in Hollywood--on "And Thou Bethlehem." Danna's The Nativity Story isn't a sea change like Gabriel, but it is a new tributary. --John DilibertoAlbum Description
This score follows not only Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem, but the centuries of musical reverberations thereafter. It plants its humble seeds in the Middle East where the gentle tones of Persian and Turkish ney flutes articulate melodic figures, and strident Roman horns and drums bind Herod the Great's soldiers to the military terminology of the age. The score then blossoms from these seeds, extending its tendrils across centuries of European traditions. Pre-Baroque instruments such as viola da gamba, vielle, harp, and recorders guide the score westward with the elemental sounds of strings and winds. The second half of the soundtrack covers Mary's isolation and her relationship with Joseph by weaving throughout the choral writing and knitting the work together into a dramatic, reverent whole.Customer Reviews:

This album is solemn some of the time, suspenseful at others, and even a little bit fear-inducing, but it is always wonderful. I highly recommend it to both fans of the film and to Christians as a whole. The movie is very powerful, but the music drives its great message home.
Highly recommended.

Better Than Most Soundtracks Lately, but Too Solemn in Every Song.......2007-01-15
THE NATIVITY STORY SOUNDTRACK is better than most CD soundtracks from other films, these days, but it still doesn't have too many memorable melodies to let the listener recognize which song is which.
Sometimes the music uses a hint of a classic Christmas carol, which is always the most distinguishable element of any of the songs. To be fair, this is a movie SOUNDTRACK of background music, and even though the best movie soundtracks contain famous melodies that are instantly recognizeable, (like STAR WARS or JAWS, among others), these most famous melodies are exceptions to the rule. These days, most soundtracks are just lucky to be decent souvenirs of the movie experience, until the film itself is finally released on DVD for home viewing.
If I didn't know this was the soundtrack to this great, underrated, and little seen movie, THE NATIVITY STORY, then I wouldn't be so interested in listening to this soundtrack at all. As it is, I like this CD as a way to help support the movie itself, and to listen to it around other folks, to help remind them that they need to eventually see this film.
I like listening to the CD the best using the back of the CD's song listing, so that I know which songs go with which scene from the film, using my memory. This helps to put the songs in perspective. Otherwise, all the songs start to become one long, indistinguishable session across the entire CD.
Though this soundtrack mostly lacks any really great melodies to use as landmarks throughout the CD, the instrumentation is VERY interesting and expertly researched and arranged! They use a lot of Middle Eastern musical instruments, with a touch of modern recording equipment tricks, and the sound itself is very pleasing and reverent.
I like seeing the film more than I like just listening to the soundtrack at home, of course, but unless I am reading THE NATIVITY STORY NOVEL, or looking through THE NATIVITY STORY GIFT BOOK, then I don't get much listening time out of this CD.
If you are wanting to get THE NATIVITY STORY experience at home, while waiting for the DVD release, then I would recommend THE NATIVITY STORY NOVEL, which has the whole story, and tons of great, extra Bible times details mixed into the story. You will learn a lot about the ancient times and customs and culture from THE NATIVITY STORY NOVEL. I like THE NATIVITY STORY NOVEL even better than the soundtrack, as far as movie souvenirs at home are concerned.
THE NATIVITY STORY GIFT BOOK is not as good as the STORY NOVEL. The GIFT BOOK has one large photo on most pages, but most of the chosen photos have already been used extensively in what little movie promotion was used, so you might not feel like you're seeing anything new, that hasn't already been seen online or in movie review photos. Most of the photos that are used are not very good at showing the movie scenes and events. The STORY NOVEL will ADD to your understanding of THE NATIVITY STORY in a way that the GIFT BOOK and MOVIE SOUNDTRACK do not.
CHILLING SCORE TO ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-12-12

BLESS ALL OF YOU OUT THERE, AND HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS. PLEASE GO SEE THIS MOVIE AND THEN GO BUY THE SOUNDTRACK.

Greatest Hits of the Wu-Tang........2006-01-14
While creating a comparison to 36 Chambers would be impossible, Legend of the Wu-Tang: Wu-Tang Clan's Greatest Hits (BMG) serves a dual purpose: both as a Wu-Tang primer for the uninitiated and necessity for the diehard fan. Predictably, Legend draws heavily from the group's seminal debut 36 Chambers. Few groups, including Wu-Tang itself, would be able to top the success of 36 Chambers and it contributes nearly half the songs on Legend. To sweeten the deal for owners of 36 Chambers, alternate mixes of "Protect Ya Neck" and "Method Man" are provided. While the former is virtually indistinguishable from the original, the latter replaces the original with alternate verses and proves to be a highlight of the album.
In addition to the usual suspects from the "other three albums" - crowd bangers "Triumph," "Gravel Pit," etc. -- three more obscure songs previously released on non-Wu albums show up. The group sleeps through "Diesel" from the Soul in the Hole soundtrack, but fares slightly better on "Shaolin Worldwide" from the soundtrack to Next Friday and a cover of Run-D.M.C.'s "Sucker M.C.s" from 1997's In the Beginning...There Was Rap compilation.
In a perfect world, 36 Chambers goes the Ready to Die/Illmatic route and gets re-issued with remixes and rarities. But as it stands, Legend provides a solid overview of the Wu's career to date. Just make sure 36 Chambers is in your collection already.

The Wu-Tang warrior's second solo joint is so conceptually huge, only somebody who's been high every day for a decade could have imagined it: hip-hop album as science-fiction double-feature as celebrity parade as horror movie as multilayered masquerade as an endlessly Baroque flow of spiels and skits, hallucinatory fantasy, and killer-bee menace. The romantic strains of Tical have been replaced by pure, sweaty sex, and Meth's image transformation from laidback muscle to bloodthirsty cyborg (with a phone book's worth of guest stars) just means he compacts his flow more tightly. The production is the Wu standard of berserk little loops and spare boom-bap, though RZA's tracks are head and shoulders above those of his disciples. --Douglas WolkCustomer Reviews:
