Not so rare disco.......2006-09-16

The songs were very good. I notice that a lot of 7" singles are on this and its companion "Super Rare Disco Vol 2". This appears to be a very common problem with these disco series. I feel that it's because the labels are trying to cram too many songs onto one disc. This genre is more suited for more discs than for more songs per disc.

Excellent Supplement to the Disco Box.......2003-07-25

For those who have the Disco Box and/or have the Disco Years (vol. 1-7), this album and vol. 2 are both excellent additions. I'm surprised that there are not more than two volumes since there are so many rare tracks that are not even available on CD. My suggestions for other songs that I can't find and I'm sure other people would think of more songs.

Not as good as I hoped.......2006-08-21

I was excited to get this CD but unfortunately the songs are too short- a fact I overlooked as I like to 'get on in' to my classic grooves, and I don't play it much at all.

Disappointed.......2005-08-31

Having very carefully chosen this CD based on my own memory of the tunes, the music sampler available and, most importantly, comments from other reviewers, it transpires that only 3/20 tracks are more than 4 minutes long. Majority of the tracks are between 3-4 minutes long. Not what I would term as 'Super Rare Disco' at all. Rare Disco is surely the full length 12 inch mixes that would have been played in the clubs, as opposed to radio edits!!! Yes, I realised there were 20 tracks in total on this CD...but not one of the previous reviwers stated all 20 tracks were on just ONE CD, nor the fact that majority of the tracks were radio edits. Shame, as majority of the tracks themselves are very good. Disappointed.

worth buying.......2005-01-13

Super Rare Disco, Vol. 2, is a definite must have for anyone looking for authentic disco classics. Although not every track is great the majority are, and one doesn't have to hunt around buying a lot of CD's for one track. It's worth the investment.

SUPER RARE DISCO, Vol. 1 & 2.......2004-04-19

One of the best collections of 1970's hustle music. As a former New Yorker, I still own hundreds of hustle 45's and 12-inch dance records from the 70's and wanted to get the same songs on CDs. This collection of 40 hard-to-find disco songs (on Volume 1 & 2) is great. I liked Volume 2 slightly better than Volume 1, but both are excellent. Even the liner notes are incredibly well-written by a New Yorker who really appreciates classic disco music and who lived through the NY dance club scene in the 70's.

If you are a disco fan that has "The Disco Box" and/or "The Disco Years, Vol. 1-7" and are looking for something different, then look no further then this collection along with volume 1. It's a great supplement with the well-known mainstream artists. The packaging is superb: entertaining liner notes along with song credits and chart positions. Highly recommended along with volume 1.

Joseph, we love you for many years of RazorMaid brilliance, but I must mention to the three or so people in the world who care that the version of "You Stepped into My Life" here is unfortunately the original album version, not the 12-inch mix by John Luongo, which was seven minutes-plus and much, much improved. The version on the "Club Epic" series is also incorrect, so the Luongo mix is unissued on CD.

But we still love you, Joseph!

The reason I wrote, "From Master Tapes" is that many of these Disco compilations are not, so BEWARE! I actually bought this for the Melba Moore track, because the 12" is VERY rare and hard to find. Fortuantely for me, they gave the 12" extended mix on this CD, so it was worth the price, just for that. There are many other great tracks on this set as well, but my "find" was Ms. Moore's, "You Stepped Into My Life". Why don't they write great songs like that any more? - jw

I bought this CD for one track, Play That Funky Music. It is a classic "Dancing in the car" piece. It is the perfect example of the musical statement that "You can't dance and stay up tight."

Why not just release a double album of Wild Cherry and I love my Music. I liked the second album very much yet the songs are mostly unavailable. Too bad!

Wild Cherry's best compilation.......2004-02-11

For the casual listener, Wild Cherry produced one of 1976's most popular songs and promptly disappeared from the planet. What happened?

Rob Parissi, the band's founder and lead singer, has said he feels the band failed because most of their subsequent material was over-produced. From a record sales standpoint he is probably correct, because much of the material on Wild Cherry's second and third albums is quite different from "Play That Funky Music."

However, from an artistic and critical perspective, the "Electrified Funk" and "I Love My Music" LPs contain some pretty decent 70's R&B. Some of the tunes are reminiscent of early 70's Motown, while others feel like late 70's Philly soul. Half of the tracks on "Super Hits" are from these two albums, neither of which have been released on CD.

All of Wild Cherry's singles are present in this compilation except the rather weak "Baby Don't You Know." In its place is the excellent "1 2 3 Kind Of Love," which was released as a single in 1978 but given absolutely no promotion by Epic.

The disc also contains the regional hits "Hot To Trot" (the cut that most resembles "Play That Funky Music") and the lush "Hold On (With Strings)." The latter is a superior remake of a song that appeared on Wild Cherry's first LP.

While it would be nice to see Sony release a more substantial retrospective of Wild Cherry's work, until that happens the budget-priced "Super Hits" is the band's best collection available on CD.

Super HIt.......2003-06-04

When I first saw this album, the first question I asked myself was "Did they have any big hits other than 'Play That Funky Music'?". In all likelihood, probably not. But it wasn't as though they didn't give it a shot. After their self-titled debut, they recorded three more albums (all currently out of print) but chart success would elude Robert Parissi & company that time out. Of the other nine tracks on this 40-minute disc only "1 2 3 Kind Of Love" had serious hit potential. "99 1/2" is a cover song originally by Wilson Pickett. "I Love My Music" has a disco beat while "Hold On" is a ballad of sorts. "Hold On To Your Hiney":good beat, awful title. "Electrified Funk" is a live track that sounds remarkably impressive and "Keep On Playin' That Funky Music" is interesting but expendable. This was a rock band who mixed in funk and disco to good results. And even though this disc shows that there was more to them than just "Play That Funky Music", they may forever be associated with the label "one hit wonder". Too bad.

Earth Wind and Fire have some of the best dance songs available. Anyone can dance to their music. I've recently held an Elaine Benis ( Seinfield fame ) dance alike contest to the music Shining Star. It was a hit and hilarious. I will do it agian. This CD is a "Must Have"! I own a club situated between two colleges. The age group is 21 - 40.

Brick still hasn't gotten that fair Greatest Hits Package but this one is Nice."Sweat til you Get Wet" the Jam that Ray Parker JR.Produced on them is here&is still Banging.Brick was a tight Funky Band back in the day."Dazz"&"Push,Push" were the Joints.

Great band, good CD, but if you saw the reviews of "Best Of Brick", most people were highly disappointed that the version of "Dazz" that was included was the shortened single version. When I saw they released another greatest hits compilation, I assumed it was to correct this and add "Sweat Till You Get Wet". They didn't have track lengths marked on outside, but I bought it anyhow. At under 45 minutes, it wasn't for lack of space on the CD. Maybe better luck on the next Greatest Hits!

What a great CD! I found it in a bookstore about 5 years ago, and it's still a fave. I highly recommend it for any fan of 70s funk or Blaxploitation films.

i discovered this little (actually, big) gem of a compilation several years ago in a bargain bin. i still can't believe that a treasure like this was marked down as it contains music from big hits like "shaft" all the way to "the mack". if you dig that style of cinematography or just the music, you'll need this excellent and hep album to complete your collection.
