Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not The Best...........2007-06-17

The past five Release Yourself mixes are much better than this one. The party mix is more electro-minimalist in sound, overall lacking the warmth and uplifting feel of the past Release Yourself mixes. Roger Sanchez is a great DJ, and 5 consistent mixes are more than anyone can expect from any House compilation series. Unfortunately, this one feels more like his After Dark mixes which suffer from the static sameness of sound which have marred so many House compilations lately. Minimalism makes fine listening music, but not dance music. If you like all the minimal dark electro sound that seems to be popular at the moment then you will probably love this mix - it is good for what it is. If you are looking for a great party mix like the Release Yourself mixes of the past then you will be probably be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The S-Man rocks...Again!.......2007-06-11

The pre-party side sets you in the mood for an amazing ride into the amazing house beats of the party. No wonders he is the #1 House DJ!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Typical Sanchez. .......2006-10-12

The track selection is good on this release. The problem is that the track selection is old. I've been hearing these same tracks in the clubs for about a year. Why then would I want to continue hearing them on this CD? The reason for purchasing a disc from a world renouned DJ is to hear fresh and unreleased tracks?

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous CD.......2006-09-20

This cd is superb. A normal job from Roger. The new in the house music.

5 out of 5 stars Graham Central Station.......2006-03-01

I have always been a big fan of Graham Central Station. I am just very happy that I can get a chance to listen to all the songs from the original album. The Band was correct when they said "GCS the baddest group from east to west. Can't wait for mirrors to be put on cd.

4 out of 5 stars Crank. High Energy! Bass guitar innovator. .......2006-02-17

1 GCS. Cool easy fun track.
2.Release Yourself High energy Gospel flavor funk to get you jumping. "Jump up and stay there till I tell you come down."
    3. "Got to go through it to get to it." Truth
    4. "I Believe in you" is thriving bass driven and solid Keyboard work featuring Ted Hershall "Happiness" and Butch on organ. Graham's intense bass vocals are worth the price of admission.
    5. "Tis your kind of music" could be the hardest cut on this release.
Choclet and Larry do a great vocal exchange and the clavinet work
    is awesome.
    6. Hey Mr. Writer foot stompin groove and a tribute to the one and only Mr. Sly Stone. GCS & family stone all groove from the same funk tree with Sly at the root.
    7. Feel the need. GCS is known for some awesome, awesome arrangements and this is no exception. Another foot stompin hand clappin groove to make ya move real smooth.
    8. Today takes up where Tis your kind of music left off with more
cool organ driven sound that percolates & sounds suspiciously like a shot at Mr. Stone.

5 out of 5 stars Funk gets stronger.......2005-01-12

There is something about this one that separates it from other GCS lp's. This one has a real 'Southern Fried Soul' thang goin for it. The opener, with Larry on all instruments, is just orgasmic wholesome funk that would bring a tear to Stevie Wonder's ear. 'Release Yo'self' is just stompin' hard funk, tight as a Louisiana virgin! 'Got To Get Through It' is an arrangers dream, very Sly Stone in feel, with Larry's usual uplifting and optomistic lyrics. 'I believe in You' is just slap bass, down and dirrrty, with Larry pouring out that voice like some enormous vat of chocolate.

'Tis Your Kind of Music,' what a dark and moody feeling! Moog and arp doin' overtime. 'Hey Mr Writer' is back to Southern style stompin,' with doo wop vocals and infectious grooves... straight into 'Feel The Need,' more of the same. Check out the bridge, the horns sound like a frieght train passin through! This is one funky album. Never enough GCS.

    5 out of 5 stars Mighty,Mighty GCS!!!!.......2003-08-19

I gave up after hearing this album-I mean about finding
anything funkier because honest to goodness "Release Yourself"
    outfunk's even SLY's latest offering!Larry Graham introduces
the show with "GCS" on which he plays all the instruments himself.THEN you are subjected to the manic-tempo rockin' and
rollin' funk of the tital track-sorry but no place to hide from
that! After the deeply Sly inflected grooves of "Got To Get Through It To Get In It" and "I Believe In You" we come to the
epic "'Tis Your Kind Of Music",a Stevie Wonder-like keyboard
dominated numbers that KNOCKS DOWN THE HOUSE!!!!Then we have
yet to MORE monster grooves in "Hey Mr.Writer" and "Feel The Need" before we come to the end on "Today",the albums
slowest tune that's so soulful and gospel infused it knocks out the listener all the same.Whatch out-this should be avoided by anyone with heart conditions baught on by too much funk!

3 out of 5 stars Feel The Need.......2000-11-12

You can't hear this here, but i find, the track "Feel The Need" is the best track on this CD. Beacause it's a melodious, mid-tempo evergreen. But i find, the followed CD (Ain't No Doubt...) and the first CD (Graham Central Station) was more funkier.

4 out of 5 stars WHERE IS THE DUB MIX OF "Release Yourself"???.......2006-10-01

this is a good compilation, and showcases The Aleem's at their prime, but where is the dub mix of "Release yourself"????
This was a HUGE oversight, as the mister magic dub mix was the one played in all the clubs, and even the radio. The regular vocal mix was hardly ever played, but is included here in it's inferior glory.

The dry alternate mix of "confusion" is nice to hear, but not essential.
The other tracks (with previously unheard mixes) are nice to have, but nothing special either.

Tracks 8 & 9 are of bad sound quality (bad mixing), and as songs are not very strong overall.

I give the comp 4 stars for all the other great tracks on it.

    4 out of 5 stars RELEASE YOURSELF.........LET'S GO BACK!!!!!.......2005-02-26

I REMEMBER IT BEING 1986, MIDTOWN MANHATTAN,(NYC) IN A CLUB CALLED "THE FUNHOUSE" HIP HOP HAD FADED FOR A MOMENT, AND UNDERGROUND CLUB ANTHEMS HAD SURFACED, THE ALEEMS AS WE KNOWN THEM BROUGHT IT ON WITH THE BANGER " RELEASE YOURSELF" 12INCH VERSION-WITH AN AWESOME DUB VERSION- AS SOON AS WE HEARD IT , THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT WE DID, SCREAMING AND LETTING LOOSE WAS AN UNDERSTATEMENT. THEIR FOLLOW-UP SMASH "CONFUSION"(IN MY BRAIN)12INCH VERSION WAS TRULY AWESOME, IT WAS A MID-TEMPO GROOVE AND IT HAD A SOUND ALL IT'S OWN."GET LOOSE" WAS PRETTY MUCH "RELEASE YOURSELF" ALL OVER AGAIN , BUT IT WAS ENJOYABLE AS WELL. THIS CD CONTAINS HARD TO FIND CLUB ANTHEMS THAT WERE POPULAR IN THE LATE 80'S, CLUB-GOERS FROM NYC, CHICAGO, AND DETROIT KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. THE FANTASTIC ALEEMS FEATURING LEROY BURGESS...CLASSIC!! CLASSIC!! CLASSIC!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars CD One serves up superb deep house.......2003-07-14

Finally, a new Roger Sanchez mix gets released Stateside! Not that I would hesitate to shell out [the money] for an import, but I have to make sure all my friends have their own copies, or they'll steal mine. Because they're that good. This latest double disc is no exception, though it's the soft sultry smoothness of CD One that's on repeat rotation in my head. No doubt its due to the no less than two Kaskade tracks (another album that I just can't play enough) along with Roger's superb programming of the mix. Familar faces like Dubtribe Sound System, Solu Music and Sandy Rivera play out perfetly while the others expanded my more mellow horizons. CD Two took several listens to warm up to - maybe it was the cold brassiness of the horns and sax after all of CD One's warmth, or the sort of cover of Tenaglia's "Music Is The Answer" which is renamed "Dancin'" - Roger more of you (a sexier voice does not exist) but please, not as Celeda! And my request is fulfilled later on, though you'll have to listen closely as its not the first time he's using one of his infamous pseudonoms. There are some deep, soul-moving tracks that would cause a frenzy on any dancefloor, like "Dancin' In The Dark" and "What's Come Over Me," and of course the unforgettable "Music Revolution", but the momentum gets lost in between with the disco-driven "Free My Soul" and the uninspiring "Freaks Like Us." With a standard as high as Roger has set for himself, its hard to raise the bar yet again, but CD One is a five star mix that on its own would be worth the price of purchase.

    5 out of 5 stars Nice vibe.......2007-01-31

I really enjoyed both discs on Release Yourself 4. I bought both vol. 4 and Vol. 5 and I like 4 just a little better. Now I have to check out Vol. 3.
There is a nice latin flare to some of the songs on this CD that I really enjoy. Every track on here is a 4 to 5 star. For those that dont like the hard hitting techno or trance you will certainly enjoy this music.

    5 out of 5 stars TGI "S" Man.......2005-10-08

ROGER IS BACK AND HE DOES NOT FAIL IN THE SLIGHTEST BIT WITH THIS BRAND NEW MIX. I ONLY WISH HE WORKED IN HIS BRAND NEW SINGLE "TURN ON THE MUSIC" BUT REGARDLESS THAT'S OKAY. THIS ALBUM HAS SUCH A DEEP RICHFUL SOUND TO IT. IT'S MIXES LIKE THIS THAT MAKE HOUSE WORTH LISTENING TO AND NO DOUBT PUTS ROGER AS ONE OF THE FEW HEAVY WEIGHTS IN DANCE MUSIC THAT ARE CONSTANTLY PUSHING THE BOUNDRIES OF HOUSE/MUSIC.

5 out of 5 stars This is the BOMB.......2005-08-19

All I can say about Release Yourself Volume 4 is that not only has Roger Sanchez lived up to his usual standard in house music, but he has topped it. This CD touches my soul with its beautiful warm beats, its percussion and its island style vocals.
This CD rocks, not just for house lovers around the globe, but for anyone who wants to feel the passion.

4 out of 5 stars Roger S kicking it once again...........2005-08-11

Great work Roger. Flawless mixing, track selection, remixes, flow. Turn it up loud and get moving. Even better, go see him live doing the 10 hour set, it'll blow you away. Awesome.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Music.......2004-11-06

This music is excellent with great lyrics and vocals! The majority of these Garage/House, Deep House and Downtempo songs rate at 4 to 5 stars. This is especially good for those who don't enjoy Techno/Trance songs. Warm and soulful. Recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Roger Sanchez=AWESOME W/Release Yourself .......2004-10-11

I was listening today to the tracks from this CD on Dance Music Channel TV, and the whole CD is TERRIFIC. Boy, it made me wanna move and move. No stopping.....The music(every track) was as HOT as the next.

Mr Sanchez, you really did it good with this CD.

    Congratulations!

    4 out of 5 stars THE Pre-Party.......2004-09-06

Roger Sanchez has yet to let me down. This new set takes off from where the previous two RY sets did. This one, however, is a bit lopsided. The "Pre-Party" disc completely outshines the "Party" disc. From beginning to end it is downtempo house at its best. The standout song for me is, uuuhhh, the first one, second one, third one.....you get the idea. Not a single okay song on the disc.
Disc 2, the "Party" disc, is also a great listen. Most of the tracks are great, but the disc starts off kinda, eehhh, kinda boring. 6 and on, with the exception of "Touch It" are great.
If you like downtempo stuff, then by all means, get this set.
It is weeellll worth the 20 beans.

5 out of 5 stars Five for Five.......2006-08-09

Roger Sanchez comes through once again with a solid mix for the summer. You just can't go wrong with any of his 5 Release Yourself mixes, and any series of House mixes are rarely ever constently good from one mix to the next (same DJ or not), much less making five winners in a row. So having this fifth in the series be as good as the previous four is some kind of accomplishment.

While the first couple in the series may seem a little dated at this point, you just cannot beat Roger's flawless mixing, song (and remix) choices, sequencing, and overall set delivery - all of which elevate the compilations from the usual series of song track mixes that flood the market.

This mix is no different, original and distictive vocals, tight beats and compelling, almost purely electro rhythms combined in a perfectly seamless and addictively danceable set. Get this mix, and all four of the others (if you haven't already) - you definitely won't be dissappointed.
