Groove Radio Presents House Grooves Compiled and Mixed by Swedish Egil

Groove Radio's Swedish Egil, whose early embrace of dance music helped artists like Depeche Mode and the Orb get their breaks in America, adds another fine compilation to his credit with this savvy house mix. Egil's radio programs in the '80s and early '90s made him a powerful tastemaker, and his ability to pick out the cream couldn't be more obvious here. Cherry-picking tracks from Harry "Choo Choo" Romero, Timo Maas, and Felix Da Housecat, among others, Egil makes his already unassailable selections even more interesting by choosing sweet remixes like Josh Wink's "Acid Dub Interpretation" of FC Kahuna's "Machine Say Yes." It's a tactic that keeps House Grooves from being just a greatest hits compilation, while still spreading the word with the masses in mind. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars Tune In, Turn up and 'Ave a Nice day.......2003-04-03

Well, despite the other reviews I've read of this album, I think overall it is quite solid.
Having said that, it probably isn't everyone's bag, as most of the tracks here are remixed quite a bit from their original versions that most fans are already familiar with.
But really, I think that is the compilation's strength as well. Because, if you buy more than three or four comps a year, you know that you will have repeat tracks on them. How many had 'Love Story', 'Madame Hollywood', or 'La La Land'on them? Ok, so this one does too, but instead of just rounding up the mixes that everyone knows already (Ultra Records, I'm looking in your general direction...), Groove instead collects the more obscure variations of them, making many of them sound fresh all over again. Which is great as many of these tunes are already near classic.
Also of note, as it mentions in the booklet, Swedish Egil mixes all the tracks directly from vinyl, to "give the listener the real feel of a DJ mix", which makes the whole thing bristle with the dynamics that are usually found only in the club.
Very refreshing for a comp to do something like that, eh?

There were a couple of nice tracks on this album. However, a couple of nice tracks does not make a good album. I used to listen to Groove Radio when it was on the air in LA. It always struck me at how odd it was that the station played some fairly inaccessible tracks. Sweedish Egil has once again shown his lust for obscurity and inaccessibility on this CD. Egil once again shows his inabillity to read his audience, or even find them.
