The Process of Belief finds Bad Religion returning to their roots in two important aspects. First, original guitarist Brett Gurewitz has rejoined the ranks, bringing with him the taut songwriting skills that made Bad Religion hardcore pioneers in the mid-1980s. Secondly, the band has returned to Gurewitz's successful indie imprint Epitaph after years on a major. The result is an album that captures the clean joy and vigor of melodic hardcore without sacrificing its moral core. Songs like "Supersonic" and "Prove It" are fast, catchy, and irresistible examples of the kind of prime ADD punk that's over before you know it. But the likes of "Materialist" and "Kyoto Now" find Bad Religion at their best. Greg Graffin sings at one point that "you might not think that there's any wisdom in a f***ed up punk rock song," but his rants against global pollution, ambition, and family politics prove otherwise. There are a few surprises as well--"Broken" is almost an acoustic chart anthem while "Bored and Extremely Dangerous" could be a Sebadoh song. In all, The Process of Belief is confirmation that you don't need big shorts and a low IQ to make a prime-grade punk rock album. --Ian WatsonAlbum Description
The newest Bad Religion album, 'The Process Of Belief' is no mere hardcore revivalism; it is, in fact, the complete evolution of punk music, a record that successfully redefines a genre the band helped to popularize. If you love punk rock, this disc will surely quench your thirst like no other, and if you're simply looking for an incredibly vital and inspiring rock record, the same holds true. CD packaged in an O-card. Epitaph Records.Customer Reviews:
It's easy to imagine.......2007-03-04
From the first seconds of "Supersonic" the listener becomes acutely aware that Bad Religion is not only back, they are better than ever. It is not until "Broken" that they even give you a second to breathe. "Broken" then gives you a radio-friendly pop sheen that is unexpected and welcome. Immediately after, however, the speed is back.
From "Sorrow" to "Sound Defense" and from "Evangeline" to "Lie," Process is proof that Bad Religion still is the best rock and roll act of the last twenty years (and counting.)

Great Music For Those Who Usually Hate Hardcore.......2006-07-22
Imagine my surprise when I finally found a group that played fast and had a singer who had a voice that a man over 30 could tolerate. As if that wasn't enough, this group also had songs that were highly melodic and not lyrically inane. The first album I ever heard from Bad Religion was No Control. The songs weren't as melodic as I would have liked, but I found the music and the singer's voice and style of singing absolutely invigorating. Sadly, the album was a cassette and it eventually fell apart. Since I wasn't absolutely in love with the album, I never actively sought to buy it again.
Years later I bought a bunch of cassettes from an Ebay auction. Bad Religion's Recipe for Hate was included in the lot. I decided to listen to it once. I figured at least the singer wouldn't give this rapidly aging dude a headache. Needless to say, I was blown away by the album. It was much more melodic than No Control. I truly love RECIPE. I then read some reviews of other albums and decided to buy Against the Grain. Sadly, I didn't find that album appealing. The music just sounded too thrashy, too short and seemed repetitive and didn't reach the melodic heights of RECIPE.
I had no idea which album to buy next or even if I should buy another album. I'm glad to say that PROCESS was my next choice. The few bad reviews came from people saying it was too poppy and wasn't hard enough. This was my clue that I would probably enjoy it more than Against the Grain. My decision turned out to be a good one. This album is much more melodic than Against the Grain. I simply love it. The songs are more diverse and more melodic. I'm planning to buy the EMPIRE album next. The old hardcore fans don't seem to enjoy it as much as their older albums. That's a sign to me that EMPIRE is probably going to be great.
When you are 35 years old, you are no longer interested whether a group has "sold out." You no longer get into major arguments with your friends if the new album by your favorite group sounds "wimpy." Trust me, I went through that phase when I was young. Metallica has had to deal with such stuff from their old heavy metal fans. It's rather pathetic to watch. I'm now only interested in what sounds good. Bad Religion no longer make albums like they did fifteen years ago. They have not sold out. Their melodies have grown and the songs are more diverse. They have simply grown and gotten better. For those who want them to sound like they did fifteen years ago, it's not going to happen. They can't return to what they once were. They must be who they currently are and not what you want them to be. Graffin is simply too smart to have remained stagnant.
By the way, if anyone knows another hardcore band they might think I like, mention it in future reviews. Right now Bad Religion is the only hardcore punk band I can truly say I like. I heard the Misfits and love the singer's Elvis voice and many of the songs have great hooks, but the production on those albums is so bad, I can't listen to them.
Excellent.......2006-07-05
Anyway a 5/5 album. Buy it!

The hard-rockin' Petra has been banging on guitars and drums for the Lord for more than 25 years. This 1990 release proved to be one of the band's most successful efforts and helped Petra win four Dove awards, including Group of the Year. Beyond Belief abounds with power chords, catchy hooks, and the kind of user-friendly rock that has made Petra a household name in the contemporary Christian music marketplace. When not shaking the walls, Petra slows it down for the title track and the wistful "Love," both handled ably by singer John Schlitt. Producers John and Dino Elefante (remember Kansas anyone?) let the boys go for the most part in rave-ups like "Armed and Dangerous" and "Underground," but listen closely to the Kansaslike keyboards on both tracks. --Michael LyttleCustomer Reviews:
This is great stuff..........2007-04-22
The title track remains my favorite song on this particular album, and one of my favorite five Petra songs of all-time. It's got a great beat, a great melody, and a great message.
There are several other solid hard-driving songs, including "Armed and Dangerous," "I am On the Rock," and "Seen and Not Heard."
But Petra's strength is their ability to cover the full gamut of musical expression, and my other favorites on this album are several of the ballads. "Love" has some great haunting vocals. And "Creed" is another of Petra's best songs, with very powerful lyrics.
Of course, there are some elements of this album that now sound rather dated, especially the overuse of synthesizer sounds which was the rage in the 80's and early 90's. And the picture of the band on the inside liner is nothing short of hysterical. That's some priceless hair!!
Quite simply, this is a great album from a great band. If you're new to Petra and want to experience the breadth of their music, from driving rock music to beautiful ballads, this is a perfect album to try. And if you consider yourself a fan, you must have this album. This one gets my highest recommendation.
All time favorite!.......2007-02-28
A Personal Favorite.......2006-09-12
This particular album is one of the best arena rock records around, secular or Christian. Songs like "Armed and Dangerous" and "Underground" beg to be heard in a large football stadium where the fans can sing along with lead vocalist, the underrated John Schlitt. Also, "Love" is an amazing ballad that ranks right up there with Journey's "Faithfully" (although the Love Petra is talking about is completely different than that which Journey speaks of).
"Seen And Not Heard" sounds very, very similar to Kiss' "Heaven's On Fire" as far as the chorus goes, but it's also one of my personal favorites from this album. Perhaps it's because this particular song gives Christians a kick in the pants to quit talking the talk and start walking the walk. "I Am On The Rock" and "Last Daze" are also excellent tunes.
Overall, I'd highly recommend that new fans of Petra purchase this album and one or two of the compilation CD's out there to get a decent overview of this band at their best. Their lineup and sound have changed considerably throughout the years and they have officially retired as a group, but Petra's music will be around for a long time to come.
If you have never heard Petra before, you're in for a surprise. Fans of Queen, Journey, Foreigner, Kansas, and Styx will very likely enjoy this group. They weren't around for so long because of luck, they're just that good.
One of their best.......2006-09-12
Oddly enough, this wasn't my favourite of theirs.......2006-09-08
My personal favourite would be the 'dark horse' "Last Daze", the hardest song on the album with an extended solo towards the end, with lyrics that lament those who turn from the faith. Sure, there are the classics like 'Beyond Belief', 'Creed', 'Underground' and 'Armed And Dangerous', but this song just plain rocks!
I struggled with whether to give this album 4 stars or 5. Ultimately I settled with 4 because while it's good and there are no missteps on this album, it's just not as original or experimental as efforts like 'Beat the System' or 'Unseen Power'. Also, the guitar riffs are basically, from what I can hear, a lot of power chords. The result is pleasing enough to listen to, but not very experimental technically.
Perhaps these are minor qualms. This really is a good album, with plenty of good songs. I'd highly recommend it!

Lovely Piano Miniatures.......2006-06-13
Mendelssohn composed eight sets of "Songs without Words", each consisting of six pieces, over a course of 12 years (1835, 1837, 1841, 1844, 1845, and two posthumously published sets in 1847). These works are romantic miniatures, characterized by their lyricism (the title of "songs" is apt), elegance, polish, grace, and imagination. Each piece is intended to capture for the listener a specific mood or emotion; they are of the type of romantic piano music sometimes referred to as a "character" piece, as are the individual sections of Schumann's Carnaval and Scenes from Childhood, Scubert's Impromptus, and Moments Musicaux, and much of Chopin. Many of the pieces in the collection have acquired nicknames over the years, but Mendelssohn himself only gave titles to five: the three "Venetian Boat Songs", the "Duetto", opus 38 no. 6, and the "folksong", opus 53 no. 5.
Mendelssohn's Songs were highly popular during the mid-19th Century but have subsequently been criticized by many for their alleged superficiality, their generally cheerful tone, and their lack of intense passion. I find the criticism misdirected. These pieces were composed for amateurs to play in their own homes. They have a flow and a beauty to them that I would not part with. It is sad that domestic music-making, people playing for themselves for the sheer joy of it, is becoming an endangered art.
This two-CD mid-priced Phillips set includes the complete Songs without Words performed by Ilse von Alpenheim. In addition, the compilation includes three of Mendelssohn's other piano works: two sets of variations and an andante cantabile. Ms. von Alpenheim was the wife of conductor Antal Dorati. Her recorded output was not extensive, but it includes the Haydn piano concertos with Dorati at the podium. Ms. von Alpenheim is a near-ideal pianist for Mendelssohn's Songs. She has an exquisite, polished, touch, a singing melodic line and flexible but controlled rhythm. She plays without mannerism. She neither prettifies these works nor attempts to find profundities in them. She offers the type of performance that one can imagine hearing in a home or in an intimate hall. I enjoyed relistening to these performances, score in hand.
Listeners will each find their own favorities in this collection. My favorites include the three Venetian Boat Songs, the first song in opus 62, the opus 62 no. 3 "funeral march" and the the first, and surprisingly romantic, work of opus 67,
Rehearing Mendelssohn's Songs brought me happy moments and made me want to turn to some of these works, including the Venetian Boat Song I played as a child and its two companions, on the piano. Amateur pianists and those who love the piano will enjoy this recording.

Deep, mystic, sexy, inspirating.......2003-07-30
It is difficult to classify, they really took a big step ahead in the 90's, even today this music sounds ahead of our time. It is difficult to compare and describe: mellow trance, mystic, house samples, suggestive and sexy velvet voices, inspirating, brilliant guitar arrangements melted with the rich texture of synthesizers...
Today we would call this music as "naked music", "chill out"... but I insist that really even today sounds fresh and new!
I put five stars with no doubt !!!

Satisfying programme.......2001-01-07
St. Paul's Cathedral Choir recorded it at about the same time that they made their Kenneth Leighton disc, hence the featured treble soloist on both is Thomas Colwell. His voice is particularly arresting, for instance, at the opening of Thomas Attwood's "Come, Holy Ghost" - by far the simplest work on the disc, within the grasp of even the smallest of choirs. At the other end of the spectrum is Robert Saxton's "At the round earth's imagined corners," commissioned by the choir in the early 90s, which is surprisingly effective and accessible compared to some of his (and his contemporaries) other works. As always with this series, the choir make these contrasted simple and complex works sound effortless.
Other works on the programme include Basil Harwood's "O how glorious is the Kingdom," William Harris's evergreen "Faire is the heaven," William Walton's exquisite and much-loved setting of "Set me as a seal" and one of Hubert Parry's "Songs of Farewell" - in this case, "There is an old belief." John Tavener's "Hymn to the Mother of God" makes a good impression here, although it's a pity that it's companion "Hymn for the Dormition of the Mother of God" is absent - the two are always presented together on recordings and were first performed together liturgically. "Turn back, O man" by Gustav Holst receives a most stirring rendition. The disc ends with Edward Elgar's very fine, cantata-like setting of Psalm 29, "Give unto the Lord," written for first performance at St. Paul's and sounding particularly glorious in the vast resonance of the building under the care of John Scott and his forces.
A worthy companion to the others in the series: well-recorded, beautifully performed and ingeniously devised. This is cathedral music at its best.

Product Description
Brian Flemming's controversial film provokes strong emotions in the viewer with its no-holds-barred exploration of faith. "Jesus didn't exist" is just a beginning for this groundbreaking, sacred-cow-exploding movie, which is sure to leave many viewers shaken and reaching for what's left of the tethers of their religious belief. And they shouldn't look to this soundtrack for much comfort. The chilling "I Don't Wanna Wait" evokes the paranoia of the "Rapture-ready" crowd that is memorably lampooned in Flemming's movie. The refrain in "Is This The Real Thing?" only reminds one of the doubt the movie so effectively plants in the viewer. But there are some humorous breaks. Ritualistic percussion and verbal nonsense propel "A Way Cuddy Dis 3000." And just try to keep a straight face while listening to "The God Who Wasn't There"--a techno re-imagining of the saccharine "Footprints" story found in Christian bathrooms everywhere. As compelling, stirring and fun as the movie on which it is based, "The God Who Wasn't There" is that rare soundtrack that both stands on its own and extends the experience of the film.Customer Reviews:

Great Music, Wonderful Soundtrack and the Tapping of Toes!.......2005-11-23
This is music that not only blends beautifully with the documentary it accompanies, but is also something to pop into the CD player for your listening pleasure. The very first track, "I Don't Wanna Wait" starts your toes tapping. You are definitely swaying to the music with "Every Single Day." Even "The God Who Wasn't There" (which has a fun parody of Footprints in the Sand) has you being pulled in by the beat. By the time you get to "Ten Turntables and a Slide Trombone," you're hooked.
Who knew that electronica/re-mix could appeal to such a broad age range? DJ Madson apparently did. It seamlessly spans many musical genres to please everyone.
This is not just great music, it's also something to which you should give thought while you're listening. If you've seen the movie, you almost "see" video clips and smile. If you haven't seen the movie (and you should!), this CD is still upbeat and, well, toe tapping goodness!

Great music; horrible lyrics; overall good album.......2006-03-11
However, the brilliant music is superb, and it outshines any of the music on SHOWTIME. My personal favorites are "Captivate," "Shame," and "Drive." All of them are prime examples of Nitzer Ebb songs, and perhaps that's why this album suffers: it is a typical album from Nitzer Ebb. No new ground is explored here, and even if the music is better then on their other albums, it still sounds the same, and the lyrics are truly terrible.
A good album overall, but the lyrics are a definite bust. It may deserve higher, but I'm going to give it a solid 4-stars. Don't get me wrong, this is a good album, it's just not my favorite
Awesome album. .......2006-01-22
All that I had known of Nitzer Ebb prior to buying the Belief album was the 'boom snare boom snare boom snare ALAAAAARM boom snare boom snare' of That Total Age, which didn't really impress me.
Belief had more depth, and with a string of really great singles from the UK (don't ever buy the Sire Records crap) (pay the extra couple of bucks for the original Mute Records presses).
There are some really cool flipsides to the singles that came out for Belief like KIA, Time Slips By, and Backlash. These songs are impossible to find in most of the online mp3 searches, but are worth your money to check out, as are the remixed versions of the singles.
The BEST by this band.......2005-08-01
I bought it as a cd in the "longbox" and cut out the images to staple to my bedroom wall, and later, taped to my rear passenger car window.
That being said, BELIEF holds some nostalgic qualities for me. When I first got a car and drove to high school, everyday I'd play a cassette dub of BELIEF and time my way there-- (I knew that by the time Shame came on, I'd be parallel parking).
BELIEF is a great album in it's own right, across the board--especially pre- Trent Reznor--but it is also for me the best Nitzer Ebb album. I remember blasting this and Einsturzende's Strategies 2 from a crappy red Datsun. Ah the memories.
Fortunately, the album still holds up, and while I don't listen to much recent 'industrial' or 'ebm' music (it's just cheesy and derivative) I will listen to this, and I will love it.
You should too.
(PS. What is up with those samples on this page? That's not NE!!!!)

Driving on the edge............2005-04-24
But the real highlights off this lp are the ones that can be heard in the underground clubs. For instance, "Shame" is somewhat popular to this day and age in certain places. I was a bit surprised when I heard it being played a while back. More so when people were dancing to it without batting an eye.
To state the obvious, Belief was the first interesting Nitzer Ebb cd. This was when the EBM outfit were getting creative and coming out with some lasting melodies. They were coming into their own and EBM itself was just getting better and better.
