A romantic's collection if ever there was one, this cachet of songs graced the equally heart-tugging film. King of the Croon and Swoon, Nat King Cole's "Stardust" is probably the most obvious of the young lovers' themes here. Louis Armstrong and Jimmy Durante, ordinarily not the most romantic of sorts, prove themselves worthy contenders with "A Kiss to Build a Dream On" and "As Time Goes By," respectively. "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" gets an elegantly simple treatment from Carly Simon, and Tammy Wynette's "Stand by Your Man" confirms her status as the late, great Queen of Country. The only disappointments with this collection are the absence of heart-wrenching numbers by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, or even Johnny Mathis; and the inclusion of the horrendous rendition of "When I Fall in Love" by the over-rated Celine Dion with Clive Griffin. --Steve Gdula

This is a great soundtrack. Anytime I need to wind down, or just put it on for a rainy day. It automatically soothes me.

5 out of 5 stars Sleepless is a top favorite!!.......2007-03-06

Bought this CD for Christmas to replace a worn out cassette tape of my Mom's. She can listen to this 24/7 and never get tired of it. Nice CD/soundtrack that will appeal to many age groups -- multigenerational. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best movie soundtrack of all time........2005-12-06

I absolutely love this soundtrack. My parents and I watched "Sleepless in Seattle" as the in-flight movie on the way to America and the movie always congures up such warm memories for me. We bought the soundtrack after coming back home and it has become almost like a lullaby to me. We have played the CD so often it actually wore out. Such timeless, soothing music. I think it is one of the best movie soundtracks of all movie. All other versions of any of the songs on the soundtrack just don't compare. I definately recommend this soundtrack to all.

5 out of 5 stars A classic soundtrack for a classic romance. .......2005-06-26

This is one of the few album/soundtracks, in which I never skip a song, because each one is good and perfect. Each song's lyrics describes the relantionship perfect, about two people who don't meet intill the very end. Each song talk about the longing of each other and love. " As time goes by" by Jimmy Durante is pretty good and he puts his print on the famous song. " Stardust" by Nat King Cole is very romantic, and tells of two people who long to be together. " A wink and a smile" by Harry Conick Jr. tells of two people are meant for each other ( just like the main characters of the movie ). The theme to " An affair to remeber" is here, and is of course what the movie ( sleepless in seattle ) makes reference to! It's a gem of an album, and is romantic as the movie.

2 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointing.......2006-11-01

I absolutely love the "Sleepless in Seattle" soundtrack and listen to it over and over again. When I found this collection I was so excited I couldn't wait to get the album. What an extreme let down it was to hear mediocore music by notable artists. I wish I had saved both my time and my money on this one and passed it on by...

4 out of 5 stars Another Almost Great Collection!!.......2003-07-29

For the life of me, I can't figure out why collections like these always seem to have a "lemon" in the soup. There are, of course, lots of surprises in this collection, and it's definitely worth keeping if you love this kind of music. But the inclusion of Bryan Ferry to sing "These Foolish Things" was next to criminal. He really doesn't understand the composer's intent, and the style he uses to sing the tune is not supposed to be "pop" by contemporary standards. It's an "old classic" with a supposedly "old classic style." Who knows, maybe they wanted to give this guy a break into this collection. It didn't work for me, though.

Then there are the very nice surprises - Jimmy Durante, Carly Simon, Sinead O'Connor, who, by the way, sings an incredibly sultry version of "I Want to be Loved By You." Maybe she missed her calling and should've recorded other tunes of this genre. Jimmy Buffett did "Stars Fell on Alabama" justice, and it was a refreshing change from his popular style.

A nice display of talent. Just skip over Bryan Ferry!!!

4 out of 5 stars A Great Collection of Classic Favorites.......2000-06-10

So many great songs that bring a smile to my face are on this album. These songs aren't new rock jams or anything; just a excellent collection of old, classic heartwarmers some of which are sung by modern favorites such as Sinead O'Connnor. Everyone should have a collection like this!

With Sleepless, Peter Wolf strips away any pretense to fashion and warmly embraces the R&B, soul, and country blues that inspired his legend in the first place. Not that Wolf has strayed very far from those roots, either when fronting the J. Geils Band or in his rewarding, if often fitful, solo career, but Sleepless presents the singer's ethos at its most naked and warmly Dylanesque. Whether revisiting Otis Rush's "Homework," seasoning William Bell's Stax track "Never Like This Before" with a dash of Muscle Shoals, palling around with the Glimmer Twins (Jagger on "Nothing but the Wheel"; Richards, along with Geils's Magic Dick, on Sonny Boy Williamson's feisty "Too Close Together"), or matching Steve Earle twang-for-twang on "Some Things You Don't Want to Know," it's an album filled with a spirit of warm remembrance and generosity. But more than mere love letters to his roots and heroes past, Wolf's performances on collaborations with Will Jennings and other writers have a timeless, bittersweet edge that undercut his previous instinct for blues caricature to great effect. Traditions die hard. This is a compelling testament why--and one of Wolf's most outstanding solo efforts. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars New Wolf Fan .......2005-04-12

I also heard one of the selections on this CD (Nothin' But the Wheel) on KPIG and I immediately bought the CD. I didn't remember Peter Wolf and I was never a J Geils fan, but to my surprise, I loved all of the selections. In fact, I lost the first CD and I just replaced it through Amazon. This is a first for me.

3 out of 5 stars One song to tear your heart out..........2004-09-03

I bought this CD on the basis of hearing "Nothing But The Wheel" on the radio (yay, KPIG!) and expected, like a lot of music by artists I'm not very familiar with, to grow and love the rest of the songs.

I was wrong. I've tried, but something about this CD doesn't do it. "Nothing But The Wheel" is a classic, but after the first run through, the rest of it irritates me to the point of having to put on something else. I'm still glad I bought it, but I can't recommend it if you want that one CD for your car, or are stuck on a desert island with limited choices.

5 out of 5 stars best of 02.......2004-08-28

after more than 30 years, peter wolf, of j. geils fame, actually still has it in him to outdo himself. an amazing album, track for track, no filler, a mix of rockers, ballads, blues, soul. probably the best "classic" rock album of the last 5 years. fans of j. geils, the stones, stax/volt: do NOT pass it up.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff.......2004-05-24

One of the best albums I've ever heard. Intelligent, mature, and damn good rock and roll too. May we all be as productive for so long.

5 out of 5 stars A year later.......2004-03-20

Have owned the CD for over a year. A gem. Sparkling shiny gem. Just keeps returning to my car, discman, Cd player.....

The true mark of quality..... is durability... (no wrong word)... is I guess the test of time. It's good when you buy it and gets better with each passing year.

A CD that few know about which is sad especially when you consider it's gotta be his masterpiece.

You'll love it.

Anyone expecting a stylistic leap the second time out for this bright talent will be disappointed with Sleepless. The mystery, however, is how anyone could listen to Kate Rusby's stunning debut, Hourglass, and wish that she'd abandon a sound that fits her like a custom-cut bodice. The Yorkshire, England-based classicist is clearly committed to the traditional folk music of her homeland, and she inhabits the music with preternatural confidence. First and foremost, she has a rare knack for making arcane phraseology seem vibrant. Witness the first album's "He took up his sword and he went to fight / Fa la lanky down dilly." Or, from this sophomore effort: "She's hit him on the head / The young man fell like lead / Quite dead / Upon the floor he lay." She dances over the words as if tipsy on some magical potion. Like its predecessor, Sleepless is marked by warm and supple playing. Among the smart originals and adapted traditionals is one contemporary selection--Iris DeMent's "Our Town." Appropriate, for as DeMent resuscitates old-time American hill music with unselfconscious élan, so does Rusby make the timeworn music of the British Isles come alive. --Steven Stolder

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love this album!.......2004-02-06

This is my first experience with the voice of Kate Rusby. Repeated listenings confirmed for me that there is something new to hear each time. That is the mark of a good album. Because I enjoyed this album so much, I got most of her other CDs as well as her concert DVD. I will only comment on one song, "Wild Goose," which is my favorite. In fact I loved it so much I went hunting for sources and found out (as I suspected) that it is a sea shanty (a "halyard song" to be precise), sometimes known as "Ranzo" or "Ranzo Ray." Those words appear in the chorus, as another reviewer mentioned. Of course Kate does her own thing with it, and the results give me a lump in the throat. It's a wonderful thing to know how a song can live many lives, from long-ago sailors singing as they work the sails and ropes, to my living room in 2004, and still have a powerful meaning. Thanks, Kate.

5 out of 5 stars It's Your Town....Goodnight.......2004-01-21

Anyone who has even the slighest interest in traditional folk music, either from Britain, Ireland, or from the U.S., is doing themselves a disservice by ignoring this CD. Someone mentioned a comparison to June Tabor, which is a good starting point, except June has experimented with folk/rock and cabaret jazz genres, whereas Ms. Rusby's feet are firmly planted on traditional soil. Her gorgeously burnished voice hides her relative youth; her work is truly a stunning accomplishment.

While the pronounciation in her thick native Yorkshire accent can be a bit idiosyncratic, there is no hiding the heartbreak and melancholy that she brings to the traditional songs, and particularly to her well chosen cover of Iris Dement's "Our Town." See if you can listen to that song with a dry eye. Ah, but there is some much more to bathe yourself in as her voice permeates your head and heart.

4 out of 5 stars north country lass shines!!.......2001-09-29

splendid collection of songs from ms rusby.if you like the indigo girls, june tabor then snap this up at once believe me you wont be disapointed.kate has a lovely fresh voice and breathes new life into the folk/rock category.excellant

5 out of 5 stars very different and refreshing.......2001-08-02

I bought this CD after learning about Kate Rusby through Amazon. I listened to the samples on the site and was immediately drawn to Kate's voice. I've had the CD about a week and it hasn't left my CD player yet. The songs are all very different sounding and the instruments used have a fabulous sound. My personal favorites have to be the upbeat "Fairest of all Yarrow" and "The Sleepless Sailor", but I enjoy all of the songs. I would highly recommend this CD even for those people who are not really into folk music much less English folk. I think that Sleepless could appeal to most anyone who enjoys beautiful singing accompanied by various flutes, whistles, and fiddles.

5 out of 5 stars Surprise!.......2001-05-01

After hearing her interviewed on NPR and watching my wife flip over the purity of Kate Rusby's voice I immediately ordered the CD. It was a surprise for my wife. But it turned out to be an even bigger surprise for me. Even though my wife and I agree that Rusby has a crystalline voice, it is I who has been spellbound and captured by the "other worldliness" of her melody, words and her wonderful pronunciation all cloaked in wistful sadness. I highly recommend this CD. A warning, however, that Kate Rusby's music is powerful magic.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, sensitive playing...........2003-11-02

Ah, reader, consider this album. I have been listening to Bayless music for years, from Bach Meets the Beatles to his crazy happy birthday album in a dozen styles (Stravinsky's Rite of Birthday, a favorite), but this one has something special going on. The playing is so beautifully, and sensitively played that one is really swept away by the original movie tune, interwound with a classical piece, so seamless and amazing. One of my all-time favorite albums.

5 out of 5 stars John Bayless is awesome.......2003-10-13

He's such a great talent, I was lucky enough to meet him almost 2 years ago. I got this CD autographed! :) He was such a nice person and performed so well on the stage. Buy this album, it's really awesome!

5 out of 5 stars The One CD in My Collection I Never Tire of Listening To.......2001-03-24

John Bayless had a vision for this album---to combine the most beautiful classical pieces along with the most romantic and engaging movie themes of all time. The arrangements and the way in which he weaves the varous pieces together, sometimes playing both themes simultaneously, are incredible. They lift you up and carry you away. The various instrumental additions (such as the guitar in track 2, drums in track 6, strings in track 5, the sound of the wind in track 4) add just the right touch---lightly sprinkled in when needed. As a professional pianist myself, I also appreciate his considerable technique and the emotion with which he infuses his music. Anyone who likes classical music and movies should own this CD. Anyone who has friends who like classical music and movies should purchase this CD for them. They will love you for it. It is my favorite CD. I never tire of listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous arrangements. Very dramatic and melodic........1999-11-16

Don't be scared off by the "clown-like" picture on the cover. This album, by a true piano virtuoso/arranger, blends familiar movie and light classical melodies together into unique arrangements. Every time it's been on while I have guests, someone always asks "What's that beautiful music?"

ANYONE WHO LOVES GERSHWIN WILL CHERISH THIS GRAND MEMENTO OF HIS MUSIC. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.

5 out of 5 stars A treat for the ears.......2004-01-11

Given all the recordings available of Gershwin in general, and the Rhapsody in Blue in particular, and given that there are three versions of the Rhapsody, and given that even those who love the Rhapsody most likely came to it through the full symphony version, there is a real treat in store here for those who've never heard the jazz band version, or who have heard it, loved it, but have never been able to find it anywhere.

The jazz band version was the first, and is unrelenting fun from beginning to end. There is an almost infectious joy written into the music, which is completely missing from the symphonic version. Listen to this disc and rediscover an old favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Fall in love with Gershwin.......2003-08-05

This CD by Michael Tilson Thomas was one of the first I picked up to start my collection of Gershwin's music. His splendid way of bringing out Gershwin's flair is invigorating. I listen to this wonderful CD more often than any other CD I own; the music is impossible to get bored with. Thomas's unique Second Rhapsody particularily grabbed my attention and I find myself humming it often. This CD is an excellent starter to your very own Gershwin collection and a unique, valuable addition to those familiar to Gershwin's tunes.

3 out of 5 stars Great Jazz Rhadsody in Blue But..........2002-10-05

I recall this recording when it was issued as an LP several years ago. The jazz band recording of Rhapsody in Blue is quite a novelty since we usually heard the version for full orchestra. Both orchestrations by Ferde Grofe are wonderful but the jazz band version with its smaller forces is refreshing to hear. The short pieces recorded here like Short Story, Sleepless Night and the Promenade (Walking the Dog) are quite great compositions and are seldom recorded.

However, I have serious reservations about Mr. Tilson Thomas' performance of the Second Rhapsody. This piece is called a "recreation" from George Gershwin's manuscript. One wonders what this means. The Second Rhapsody was originally a sequence in the film Delicious (under the name Manhattan Rhapsody where it was part of a New York setting) which Gershwin developed into a concert work. Gershwin said there was no program for the Rhapsody. The theme Gershwin started with was one he refereed to as a "rivet theme." I think the title given to the Rhapsody (Rhapsody in Rivets) would not have originated with Gershwin.

The Second Rhapsody has not been a popular piece but has been played and recorded before (notably by Oscar Levant with Morton Gould and his Orchestra). Gershwin recorded the work with an orchestra he hired (available on Music masters) before making some corrections to the score for publication. It is an unfortunate fact that Mr. Tilson Thomas performs the Second Rhapsody with his own embellishments. He was asked by Ira Gershwin to stop this practice but, as far as I am aware, Mr. Tilson Thomas never did, so the recording here should list the Second Rhapsody by Gershwin-Tilson Thomas.

Sorry but I cannot recommend a disc where too many liberites have been taken.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic "Rhapsody in Blue" and more.......2002-09-07

Tilson Thomas on piano and the LA Phil behind him, it is the other end of the piano roll restoration version. You know MTT is inside the music and he draws you into it too. This album is a rock in my Gershwin collection.

4 out of 5 stars Collectable Gram.......2005-08-02

This comprises stand-out tracks of country standards Gram Parsons made with the Burritos shortly before he left the band, and three fantastic previously unreleased duets with Emmylou Harris which were inexplicably left off his wonderful second solo album, Grievous Angel, including the definitive version of Sleepless Nights. You need to have these

4 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Collection!.......2005-02-16

This post-humous collection of Gram Parsons recordings was originally released in 1976 - 3 years after his death. 9 tracks are Flying Burrito Brothers recordings from early 1970 and 3 tracks were recorded during the "Grievous Angel" sessions. The 3 later tracks are duets with Emmylou Harris.

There are no Parsons originals included. The Burritos were planning to record a whole album of "pure and honest" country music. Most tracks are pleasant, but nothing extraordinary.

Parsons had a good voice for country music, but this collection does not give the answer to how he could become a legend in country-rock. There are some fine vocal harmonies with Chris Hilmann and with Emmylou Harris things rarely go completely wrong.

Of the Burrito songs "Sing Me Back Home", "Your Angel Steps Out of Heaven" and "Dim Lights" are really good, and "The Angels Rejoiced Last Night" with Harris is the highlight of the album.

4 out of 5 stars out-takes worth taking...........2003-11-07

This album was actually my introduction to Gram Parsons. As an introduction, it is not much chop as it neglects his songwriting and original approach to non-country material. This side of Gram is exemplified on other releases (particularly the FBB Gilded Palace of Sin) that were the foundations of country-rock and alt.country as we now know them. Nonetheless, it's a great album for Gram-completists and a good country-rock (with the emphasis on country) effort. The solo (with Emmylou Harris) songs are probably the highlights although I like the Burritos take on Green Green Grass of Home. The version of Honky Tonk Women is disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars What a beautiful CD.......2006-11-10

This is a lovely CD, that tells a story of a overnight candlelight vigil. From beginning to end, full of hope and quiet, despair, joy, relief, lots of emotions and all told without a single word - all piano and instrumental. You can hear strains of some old gospel favorites, like Amazing Grace, in a special and new arrangement. I am a massage therapist and my clients love getting an hour long massage listening to this. Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Wise Decision ..........2005-09-10

I originally purchased "The Vigil" as a gift for my brother; however, curiosity got the better of me, so I just had to hear the CD for myself. Well, as it turned out, I liked it so much that I ended up buying one for myself.

David Nevue's music has both a soothing and spiritual effect on the listener. If I had to name a "favorite track", I'd say #7 - Chasing Shadows"; however, without hesitation, I can also say the entire album is a winner.

"Once upon a time", I studied the piano, and after hearing "The Vigil", it inspired me to want to start playing again. It's been a long time since I've felt this way. Music should be an "inspiration", and I give the artist full marks for the wonderful album he has put together here.

So make "a wise decision"! Get yourself a copy of "The Vigil" today!

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual, Grounding and Uplifting.......2004-07-24

David Nevue's piano works on this CD are intensely spiritual and helped me to connect more deeply with my soul and life purpose. Thank you, David, for this incredible gift you are sharing with the listeners.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting Indeed.......2003-04-29

As I was preparing to write this review, I read the words from the CD's liner notes, "hauntingly romantic." Indeed, this is a wonderful description of this CD. I was preparing to write that this CD is "hauntingly beautiful." The Vigil is an outstanding work. David Nevue's heart and soul are revealed in each and every song. You will love this CD for a "hauntingly romantic" and "hauntingly beautiful" evening. In my book it is a "must have." But, so are all of David's other CD's. Find out what you've been missing and discover what his fans already know. David's music is simply wonderful. It will take your breath away and renew your spirit.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite David Nevue album........2003-04-26

From the first notes of track #1 be prepared to be drawn in for an emotional rollercoaster unlike any other! I've been a long time fan of David's since I found him ...and probably will be until he stops making music altogether. I cannot recommend the current 3 albums enough that Amazon has listed and his 3 other albums previous to The Vigil (The Tower, While The Trees Sleep, The Last Waking Moment) and 1 more after Postcards From Germany (O Come Emmanuel; A Christmas Celebration)! Get them any way you can and prepare to wear out your CD player 'til the CDs can play no more!

David, thank you for making your wonderful music available to amazon. Continue to bless the world (both Christian and non-Christian alike) for many, MANY more years! God Bless! :)

4 out of 5 stars LITTLE STURM AND LESS DRANG.......2007-03-17

Mendelssohn's songs with words are bound to invite comparison with his Songs Without. Those 48 elegant piano pieces have often been viewed as being a little lacking in variety and as being a walk on the mild side. This disc contains 24 songs carolled by Margaret Price to a tasteful accompaniment from Graham Johnson, so it's unlikely that we are going to be given any renderings that misrepresent them. Nor are we. The performers take us back to the familiar world of the Lieder Ohne Worte, and rightly so. The songs range from the composer's teens to late in his brief career, and to my ears the numbers selected improve in general as they go along, and the performances improve along with them.

With the ultra-precocious Mendelssohn of all composers we would not be entitled to make excuses for shortcomings in early works on grounds of youth. This is, after all, the composer of the Rondo Capriccioso for piano at age 16 and of the octet and the overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream very shortly afterwards. When it comes to the early songs it may be that he had to stay within the rules imposed by his conservative teacher. However even if he was trifling with his great genius for reasons of enforced discipline, he was still trifling with his genius, and that is how the first few songs here come across to me. There are glimpses of what he could really do, all the same. The liner-note writer gets rather excited about the Hexenlied (Witches Song), but what I find in it is not the `frenzied goings-on' that he detects, but more a neat and effective musical equivalent of a story about witches for young children - graphic but not too frightening. Its mood and style remind me more of the Midsummer Night's Dream, I'm glad to say, than of Mendelssohn's truly deplorable and misconceived music for Goethe's Walpurgisnacht. What is interesting is how the performers go about this first departure from the tone of the previous selections. Margaret Price makes what seems to me a slightly nervous attempt at witchiness, as if afraid of overdoing it, as well she might be. I think they could have taken a little more of a risk without guying the song. The next two numbers more or less revert to the manner of the earlier efforts, but the beloved melody of On Wings of Song bursts through like a ray of sunshine on track 8 - simple and unambitious still, but fresh forever.

As the recital progresses and the composer's opus-numbers get higher we start to encounter the greater Mendelssohn. One that made an impression on me was the so-called Folk Song on track 14. Now at last we are within striking distance of Schubert and Schumann, and I was surprised that this is the only song out of the 24 in which Mendelssohn adopts Schubert's favourite device of echoing the vocal cadences in the accompaniment. This simple trick can produce expressive wonders, and it's not as if Schubert had some copyright on it - you will find Beethoven using this device in one of the songs from Egmont. Margaret Price deepens her tone here in a way I like, and Graham Johnson in parallel dares to lean on the bass a little more, something I wish he had done in some of the earlier songs. Matters then keep improving. Das Waldschloss on track 21 is a splendid spooky effort, splendidly realised with real atmosphere to it. The last two songs have genuine stature to them, particularly the Nachtlied. Here the performers rise to the occasion, with power in Price's voice and depth in Johnson's playing.

It may well be, of course, that they were restraining themselves in the earlier numbers so as to achieve this sense of climax, and there would have been nothing wrong with that. All the same, I can't escape a slight sense of regret at what seems to me a rather pallid impression early on. Johnson in particular, while technically immaculate and showing a fine sense of proportion, could have done a little more near the start to remind us that Mendelssohn was one of the foremost piano players of his time by showing us more of the resourcefulness in the piano part.

A fine disc for all that, and one I recommend. The recording seems good by and large, although there was a slight sense of strain on a few of the singer's high notes. The liner-note is quite helpful in general too, if rather overdoing its emphasis on such wonders as a `magical shift from D to B major' somewhere, which is rather the equivalent of complimenting an author on his spelling and punctuation. The Wings of Song wafted me into the ether not infrequently, and I hope they will do the same for you.
