Though thinner than the contemporaneously-released Hoshi No Koe, this four-cut, 65-minute mini-album shows off Takemura's ability to wed Mouse on Mars-like playfulness with experimental moves that don't sound like dissertations. Score composer Howard Shore has informed this first installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy with his distinctly modern sensibilities. Revolving loosely around a brief, heroic brass theme, this epic is infused with a powerful rhythmic thrust and a musical range that encompasses centuries (from the Renaissance pastoralism of "Concerning Hobbits" to the fiery, Prokofiev-influenced drama of "A Knife in the Dark"). Key to the score's sense of mystery and magical place are the rich choral passages that are interspersed throughout, some so ominously gothic they make The Phantom Menace's "Duel of the Fates" sound almost sunny by comparison. I really enjoyed the 3 series of The Lord of the Rings movie so I wanted the music. The soundtracks are good but if you like the movie the soundtracks watch the movie. They remind you of certain parts in the movie like the song Concerning Hobbits. The song is whimsical. Enyna has a great voice, very haunting. The Ring Goes South is another favorite of mine. I can enjoy these soundtracks as classical or dramatic music. I bought them because I loved the Lord of the Rings which has many similarities to Braveheart. Bravery, courage, strength, honesty, selflessness, love and other good human qualities people try to attain and admire them in the people and movies they view.

One of Howard Shore's best soundtracks around. The music is strong enough to tell its own separate story apart from FOTR. You will never tire of the heart-pounding excitement from The Bridge of Kazaad-Dum track.

Lord of the Rings Original Soundtracks, films 1 and 3.......2006-11-08

Having made an earlier mistake of buying 2 C.D.'s which were not original soundtrack, I can truthfully say these are the best. If you are a Lord of the Rings fan, look no further - no one does it better than The London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the composer Howard Shore. You will be back in Middle Earth reliving all those wonderful scenes. I bought only The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King from Amazon.com because I already had the Two Towers from Amazon.co.uk and I would recommend all three - magical.

What can I say that hasn't already been said about Howard Shore's magnificent score for the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy? A soundtrack can define the whole atmosphere of a film, and this fully orchestrated work certainly does that with sweep, splendor and wonder, alternately humanizing (hobbit-izing?) the characters, imbuing the landscape with magic and capturing the world-shaking impact of events of mythic proportions. And this was no easy task considering the iconoclastic status of the story and the superb quality of Peter Jackson's filmmaking. This is a truly a soundtrack for the ages--a fitting accompaniment to a film for the ages! Every aspect of life, from the extreme to the mundane, is captured in this music. Listening to it can make every remembered moment of the movie come alive again in your mind, from the most horrific battle to the smallest moment of humor or kindness. I think this first one is my favorite of the three "Lord of the Rings" soundtracks. I enjoy the juxtaposition of the lighter moments, like the sweet, simple hobbit theme, with the grander and more menacing sections of the music. (That despite the fact that said hobbit theme begins exactly like the first phrase of the Protestant hymn "This Is My Father's World," which prompts me to think of the hobbits trouping off to Sunday school every time I hear it. But now when I hear the hymn, I think of Lord of the Rings, so I suppose all's fair!) What impressed me most as I watched "The Fellowship of the Ring" was how scary the music was when the hobbits were being pursued. Those relentless drums and eerily screaming drums made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, even though I knew the story like the back of my hand and knew for a fact that the poor little heroes would manage to escape. But the music truly made me wonder otherwise ... Now that's good composition! And the fact that the filmmakers chose to include background music in so many of the scenes, almost continuously ... well, that's just good filmmaking! The other impressive thing about Howard Shore's score is how the voicing and repeating motifs tie the whole thing together, like the finest of symphonies. The total effect is utterly convincing and utterly transporting. Peter Jackson chose well when he picked Shore as his score writer. Very, very well! Be sure to get the scores from the other two movies in the trilogy as well - "The Two Towers" and "Return of the King." They seem to be available in no end of different packagings, including ones with bonus DVDs about the creation of the score. Also, make sure to get the extended edition DVDs of the movie itself, with hours and hours of fascinating commentaries and behind-the-scenes documentaries about the making of the films. Truly a bargain at any price! And for more seminal soundtracks, try John Williams' defining scores for the "Star Wars" series and Basil Poledouris's spectacular score for the original "Conan the Barbarian."

For me, the music of the first sequel is my favourite since this is also the sequel that I prefer in the trilogy (I remember being blown away by the quality of this movie, the actors, the setting, the action scenes, the special effects, the moving relationships between all the characters and of coourse the music)
I think that the other CDs are a bit repetitive once you've got this one, even if I still like the music of the second soundtrack 'The Two Towers'. As for the 3rd sequel, I seldom listen to it as there is only one track that I like, 'The Return of the King'.
Now, this first CD of the trilogy is actually very good. Thanks to Enya, it is haunting and the songs are beautiful. There are a few eery but melodious songs like 'The Council of Elrond', 'Lothlorien', 'May it Be'. I love the change of tempo, the balance between fast and slow movements in 'A Knife in the Dark', 'Flight to the ford', and 'Amon Hen' which is my favourite piece (the Death of Boromir) with the oboe sound mixed with the beat of the drums and finaly the haunting voice of the singer. Track 17 is also worth listening. I like this CD because you've got different tempos and melodies and Anya is a great singer to me. But I also enjoy listening to Emiliana Torrini's song 'Gollum's Song'in the second soundtrack...

There are very few words that can describe the awesome musical prowess of Sign O' the Times.

The album is politically, musically, and socially interesting. Prince parties it up, politics it up, and then parties some more on this album.

This is without a doubt one of his top 3 albums of his career of-course with Purple Rain leading the way.

This album is just not for the fans, but for a generation of R&B and Funk lovers who treasure great music!

Sign O' the Times... simply a masterpiece for the ages!

Underappreciated genre-defying album.......2007-06-25

even with the recognition he has received, prince is one of the underacknowledged geniuses of rock 'n roll. as prolific as dylan or neil young, prince seemingly shifts genres and styles effortlessly, always creating interesting music, almost without peer in the current pop music scene. from sly stone to little richard to p-funk to joni mitchell, prince has assimilated and made his own a ridiculous range of styles and sounds.
this album is my favorite. it spans everything from gorgeous ballads [adore, slow love] to topical commentary [title track] to all-out funk [housequake] to pure pop [starfish and coffee]. prince is a brilliant vocalist and performer as well, ripping out santana-like solos and easily adopting a variety of vocal styles.

There are a lot of reviews out there that raise this album to almost unapproachable levels. Bottom line: this is a solid - one of the most solid - offerings from Prince. Lot's of pop, rock, and funk songs.

I still say 1999 and Purple Rain stand out as the best of Prince but Sign 'O' the Times should still be in your collection.

One huge negative has to be mentioned!!! This cd needs to be remastered. The sound is awful. I finally burned it into ITunes and changed the equalizer settings to get a half way decent sound but remastering would be a great idea.

Born Under a Bad Sign dates back to a time when albums were collections of singles, and when singles, designed for radio and jukebox play, seldom ran more than three and a half minutes. That limitation meant that artists had to make an impact quickly and firmly. In blues, the tendency of songs to go on a bit had to be curbed to produce performances with punch and point. There are few better examples of this process in action than Albert King's 1960s tracks like "Crosscut Saw," "Born Under a Bad Sign," and his story of hot whispers during the hot-wash cycle, "Laundromat Blues." With his thick voice and no-nonsense guitar, King brought absolute blues credibility to the well-made commercial single, and even tracks that were recorded purely for the album, like the aching slow blues "As the Years Go Passing By," became classics. Not his best sounding work by far........2007-04-24

This may be the album that made the man but it's not his best work. The clips above are by far the best part of the album. Less than simple blues leads, wrong notes played in several places with attempts to cover it by horns are noticible. The horn section on a couple of the songs is down right disturbing.

The REAL trendsetter!........2007-02-12

It would appear that "King Of The Blues Guitar " contains the same tracks with additional songs thrown in. However this album was groundbreaking/trendsetting when it first was released.*I'm not seeking to use these terms flippantly as is the case with many reviewers.By the term "trendsetting" i mean to say it actually influenced thousands of guitarists including Eric Clapton who stole the lick from the intro of the title song as well as the melody for "Years Go Passing By" and used it for his intro to "Layla". The cover was striking and it's still rated as Albert's best ever release. "Personal Manager" for me is the standout track because Albert pulls out all the stops and ends up way past the 17 fret.

This album is not only the best of Albert King's it is also one of the best blues albums of all time. If you are into blues then there's no need for introduction, cause you already know it by now. If you are beginning to blues or just love good music you can't find a better place to start. Albert King is one the major influences in blues and guitar music. And this is his best.

Albert King is a blues master and "Born Under a Bad Sign" is one of his most prominent achievements.On this album the band consisted of all top-notch musicians a few of which would rise to stardom. There was Steve Cropper on guitar[Blues Bros.],Booker T and Isacc Hayes(Shaft)-keyboards, Donald "Duck" Dunn on bass, Al Jackson Jr on drums , and those Memphis Horns rounding it out. Booker T. and Donald" Duck" Dunn recently did work with Neil Young and toured with CSNY on their 2000 reunion tour.

When you listen to this collection of songs you get an uncanny sense of deja vu. Like you've heard a snippet of a song somewhere before.For instance, "The Hunter" when King is singing " I've got you in the site of my love gun", immediately I recognized that line; However ,I remember it as Robert Plant bellowing it from "How Many More Times" off Led Zepplin's 1969 debut release. Or the style that Albert King had of talking in the songs. For instance "Crosscut Saw" he says "Now watch this" before breaking into a hot lead like he was going to do a trick and trying to get your attention. It made me think of Jimi when he would say "Move over rover, and let Jimi take over". And his guitar playing is profound,laying down a foundation for guitar greats like Jimi Hendrix to build their stellar style upon. It was with great insight that Bill Graham, the founder of the FILLMORE EAST and FILLMORE WEST had Albert King billed with the psychedelic San Francisco bands and white blues bands rising out of England in the late 1960's. Groups like the Yardbirds ,Cream [Eric Clapton] ,Led Zepplin [Jimmy Page], The Jeff Beck group, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. Albert King is quilted throughout the blues we know today making his contribution legendary. If you love the blues I strongly recommend "Born Under a Bad Sign" as a worthy addition to your collection.

Not a bad song on here.......2006-10-18

A lot of Albert King's stuff has been turned into dull blues-rock cliches, but you can't blame him for that. This album is an incredibly satisfying experience. The songs are all well-written and arranged perfectly. Albert King may not have been the most versatile guitarist, but his playing always sounds good and he knew what to play and when to play it. Crosscut Saw and Personal Manager have two of the greatest guitar solos I've ever heard (I also like Albert's habit of saying things like "Watch this", "heads up", and "Woo!" during his solos). The Hunter is catchy like the flu. I Almost Lost My Mind is one of the prettiest blues songs you'll ever hear. If you like blues you will love this album.

This audio is very funny. I love Bill Engvall's sense of humor, just wish I could also see his facial expressions. It is a great "keep awake" CD for the car. You are too busy laughing to fall asleep.

OK..just OK.......2007-06-25

First off, if you're coming here hoping for the latest round of "here's your sign" stupidity jokes...find a different Engvall CD. He does not a one of his signature gag here. Probably he's afraid they're starting to become stale and he might be correct. Instead the punchlines here are usually at the end of a story.

HIGHLIGHTS:
Bill realizes he's "getting older" (track 5) when he deliberates his wife's offer of a lovemaking session. ("When did THAT start?"). He also skewers the idea of bundled hotel amenities as he verbally parries with a front desk employee ("Part of Your Package"). (I won't spoil the punchline there..) Perhaps the best bit is Engvall pondering (in "Bad Weiner Day") how fish, an aquatic lifeform, developed a taste for terrestrial worms. ("One day, they were lying on the banks of a river....trying to catch their breath....thanks for those of you who got that..") He also finishes on a high note recalling his flight with the "Thunderbirds" (track 12)

LOWS:
The advice to "argue naked" in Track 1 isn't really yuk-worthy and "Slim Jims" is likewise pretty weak.

BOTTOM LINE:
It's OK but I've laughed harder at his older stuff. If you're hoping to take this along in the family truckster, be advised that Bill's language is a bit "ruder" than usual so you may want to sample the whole thing first rather than throwing it in the deck cold with the kids in tow.

I was really looking forward to this new cd, but was very disappointed. Some jokes were obviously old, and the new material was not funny at all. Save yourself the money, and don't even borrow from a friend.

I think Bill is one of the funniest guys out there. He can use what we experience in a day and bring out the humor in it. I think this is the same if not better caliber than some of his early albums.

When their first U.S. single, "All that She Wants" was released and all over the airwaves, I didn't think much about Ace of Base at all, I just wan't into that reggae-pop sound. My best friend purchased their cd (we were both still in high school at the time) he gave me a copy that he had recorded onto cassette(remember those?) After hearing tracks such as "Young and Proud", Voulez Vous Dancer" and "My Mind" I fell instantly in love with the album. I am a lover of dance/club music and more than half of the tunes on this album are upbeat europop tracks - usually around the 120 bpm range. A few weeks later I was in the record shop and found the import version of The Sign cd but in Europe it is labled as "Happy Nation - U.S. Version". I picked it up, and noticing that it had extra tracks that were left off the the U.S. version (typical) I snatched it up and haven't regretted it yet. It included an extra track called "Fashion Party" that is very similar to "My Mind" and one entitled "Hear Me Calling" which is another upbeat-dance oriented track. The import version also includes the Moody Gold Club edit version of "Happy Nation," another great track - one of the few reggae -tinged tracks that I like from the cd aside from Wheel of Fortune. I listed to the cd so much that it finally just gave out, not bad for being 12 years old and being played constantly. Luckily iTunes has the import version available (Happy Nation) for download rather than the less expansive U.S. Version(The Sign). There is also a German version entitled "Happy Nation" that has another two tracks available that aren't on either one of the two previously mentioned (The German version has ablack cover with a large disco ball on it). All of this info is for Die Hard Ace of Base fans such as myself. This cd takes me back to those summer afternoons when I was in high school, either layin on the bed chillin to this disc, or cruisin around in the car with the sunroof open, windows down and music up! This cd is definately in my top ten all time fav cds, right up there with Madonna's Confessions on a Dance Floor and Confessions Tour cds.

First CD I ever bought., even before I owned a CD player!.......2007-03-03

Okay, maybe in 2007 it's cheesy to gush over the first CD you ever bought. Well, I'm going to do it anyway. I had a pretty good collection, on cassette, of new wave / synth-pop music, like The Cure, Depeche Mode, Erasure, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Yaz, etc. But then, The Sign came out, and I thought buying it on cassette wouldn't do this awesome album justice. So, not even owning a CD player, I bought it on CD.

Yes, like other reviewers stated, The Sign is an album that brings back good memories. I remember going to parties where someone would invariably give it a spin, and discussing with friends which tracks I liked the best. I enjoyed even the songs that they never played on the radio, like Young and Proud, and Waiting For Magic. It is interesting how people with different tastes in music (rap, new wave, Top 40) all had this one album in common.

Alas, this is a souvenir of a time long passed, the early 90's. Unfortunately, Ace of Base did not become the next ABBA, as some in the music industry speculated. Their second album, The Bridge, flopped, and soon CDs of their first and second albums started turning up in bargain bins. An attempt to regain popularity with a cover of Bananarama's Cruel Summer proved unsuccessful. It didn't help that the original song was still on many radio stations' playlists.

For a brief instant, though, Ace of Base reigned supreme.

this is a great cd. i just listen to it over and over. i had it on cassette when it came out first and just had to get it on cd. it brings back fantastic memories from college and a great mate.

Yes, I saw "The Sign" and finally bought it after all these years. The Ace of Base prove themselves as a good (modern) Pop Group. Danceable tunes and decent ballads.

I loved Bill Engvall when he first came out but I think he's lost his touch or maybe his humor is one that just gets old after a while. If you really like Engvall, you might like it. I didn't find myself laughing out loud very often. It's kind of boring, actually.

Bill Engvall first came to my attention with his part in the Blue Collar Comedy Tour with Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy and Ron White. (Yeah, that's right, the Redneck Rat Pack.) Well, this CD shows off Bill's talent to its very best. I love his stories of his cats, son's toy soldiers, butter sculpting (who did invent butter sculpting?), and of course signs for stupid people.

Overall, my family and I found this to be an outrageously funny CD. Beware, though, there are a couple of scenes about sex, so you will want to get familiar with the CD, and what parts to skip, before you listen to it with younger or more sensitive listeners.

But, that said, this is a very funny CD that I love to listen to, and highly recommend!

Funny, but definitely for adults..........2006-03-10

I listened to this CD for the first time while carpooling a load of thirteen-year olds to school in the morning. It's hysterical, and we all enjoyed it, but I had to turn it off when he got into some raunchier bits. Mind you, it's nothing offensive when you're in adult company, but it's definitely not meant for kid's ears. "Hot monkey love" and riffs on sex are definitely NOT what you want to hear with a carful of kids! That being said, this is a very funny album. I'm definitely going to buy more Bill Engvall, and then I can put together a sampler CD of the cleaner bits that are suitable for everyone.

This Is What The 80s Sounded Like.......2007-04-21

Those of you who follow my reviews know that I don't hand out 5 star reviews very often or easily
in this case,Autograph have richly deserved this honor

Sign in please is the debut of one of rock and rolls most underrated bands
they came in the middle of the 80s and dominated the airwaves with 'Turn Up The Radio' a song that was so catchy and good that you couldn't ignore it
but the surprise is that every song on this debut is just as good

you can almost see the whole band smiling as they play song after song of perfect rock and roll
the keyboards sound cheesy but that's part of the appeal
this is what the 80s was all about,good times,smiles,and having fun
other rock bands of that time couldn't quite grasp that (some did,like bon jovi,poison and y&t but Autograph was one of the first)
I listen to this all the time and smile each and every time

the opening track 'send her to me' is straight ahead rock and roll filled with keyboards,bright guitars,and smiling vocals...you can almost hear the carnival rides in the background or feel yourself roller skating,it's just plain fun!
then comes "turn up the radio' one of the best and most fun rock songs of all time...boy did RCA drop the ball,when they had this MONSTER hit they should have released another single or two from this great album but they never did...what a waste...the label never pushed this band and they dropped out of sight after this (they released other albums but they never got the attention they should have)
from there it goes to night teen and non stop...a real guilty pleasure,always gives me happy thoughts of teenage night life
the next song 'Cloud Ten' should have been a tv theme song,it has that kind of feel...good times!
from there 'Deep End' a great song
and then 'My Girlfriend's Boyfriend Isn't Me' one of the stand out songs from this album...this should have been a hit single...all about a girl who can't make up her mind..great chorus and very catchy,the lyrics are all too true!!
from there 'Thrill Of Love' the keyboards really make this song great!!!
the next song 'Friday' sums up what the 80s was all about...having a good time all the time...God,I miss those days!!!

the next song 'In The Night' has lots of atmosphere and really grooves
and the album ends strongly with 'All I'm Gonna Take' which is a mid-tempo rocker that has lots of atmosphere and emotion
this band is absolutely amazing...if you love Night Ranger,or Bon Jovi or Poison or Y&T you should check them out...also if you love Bill Hunt's solo material (the lead singer of Christian rock band X-Terra) you would absolutely love Autograph....this band has everything it takes!

the upside - Great songs start to finish...the best of the best are 'Turn Up The Radio' 'Night Teen And Non Stop' 'All I'm Gonna Take' 'Send Her To Me' and 'My Girlfriend's Boyfriend Isn't Me'

DON'T OVER-ANALYZE IT, IT'S GREAT ROCK!!! .......2006-08-28

I remember loving this album when I was a teenager. Listening to it nowadays, I still enjoy it. A lot of it is cliched, and some of the lyrics are pretty laughable. But I remembered that one of the things I liked about the band was that it had a sense of humor. Probably originating from singer Plunkett!!! It's fun music, not music to brood about, and take apart critically. TURN UP THE RADIO is a great song, with a fantastic solo. Pretty much all the solos by Steve Lynch are phenomenal, and he triple-tracked a lot of them ala Randy Rhoads. I saw him once at a guitar seminar, and he played the solos for us note-for-note with backing tracks, including his solo piece HAMMERHEAD (which is on their second album), and it was great. His work was a big part of what I liked about Autograph.

The music is mid 80s rock fare... not too hard. Lots of keyboards on this... sort of reminiscent of the style employed by the band EUROPE a few years later. The vocalist has a raspy style, with a little David Lee Roth in him now and then (vocal quips). The guitarist is a state of the art hammering specialist, with an ability to write phenomenal solos that remain melodic and interesting. Overall, the album is good solid rock with a good beat, and with more than average humor (in the lyrics). With a song like MY GIRLFRIEND'S BOYFRIEND ISN'T ME, how can you not see that these guys are out to crack you up and rock you at the same time.

I just bought this again, and I'm enjoying it for the fun of it. It's not a classic band (like Led Zeppelin, for example), but they rock extremely well and you'll have fun driving around to their jams!

Musical Group Autograph.......2006-08-10

A great California glamrock band of the eighties era, Autograph was a fantastic group with a fantastic sound. The album "Sign In Please" was some of the best music I believe Steve "Plunk" Plunkett ever recorded. Thats my opinion and I'm stickin to it. The first seven songs straight is one hit after another. The second track "Turn Up The Radio" is the song that drew me to the album back then and once I had the album I wanted to play it over and over non-stop. Every song on this album is great and still deserves air-play even today though most radio stations have done forgotten what Autograph was but I haven't. Glamrock to me was a magical experience back in the mid-eighties and all the groups back then were doing it. The failure of the group Autograph was not the group at all, it was in the marketing which was RCA's failure. If you like guitar roller coasters loud and wild then you'll like Autograph. It's a ride you'll never want to get off.

Ah... Autograph... I just bought this album.. And jeezlaweez, I am not disappointed at all.. These guys really kicked some butt. Their sound is excellent.. These guys sort of remind me of Firehouse/White Lion a little.. If you love hair metal... Get it, just get it.

What can you say about one of the best comics of today. an awsome cd, extremely funny.

An exceptionally funny CD.......2006-08-03

He's back! Bill Engvall, that stalwart of the Blue Comedy Tour, and a founding member of the Redneck Rat Pack. In this CD, Bill takes on everything from artificial insemination, children, and of course signs for stupid people.

Overall, I found this to be an exceptionally funny CD. Now, there are some parts that you will not want to listen to with younger or more sensitive listeners, which is pretty standard with Bill Engvall. But, if you listen to the CD, and get to know which scenes to skip, it is very well worth listening to. I love this CD, and highly recommend it to everyone.

Oh, by the way, I loved the final four tracks, which are musical. I especially loved #9, Don't Mess With Us!

Here's Your Sign: Reloaded is a little too short, but still very funny. One of the best tracks on the album is: Here's Your Sign (Don't Mess With Us). Ignore the other reviewers that complain about this track. Libs always scream "freedom of speech", until someone says something they don't like.

Very good album....except for ONE THING!.......2004-04-19

I've been listening on and off to Bill Engvall for about 7 years, and he is often a very funny human being, and this album is no exception. I was laughing a LOT throughout this album and was in a generally good mood while listening to it...then "Here's Your Sign (Don't Mess With Us)" came on. This song is an anti-"Bush hater" song Bill did with Neal McCoy which starts off with them picking on the Dixie Chicks for what they said about W. I didn't hear the rest of it and though I may later on, I don't really want to hear any more of it. I have been against this sorry excuse for a war our country is having with Iraq since W came on and said they have WMDs (which I never believed from day one). Bill acknowledges Neal for not letting him sing the song alone (He couldn't have ticked me off more if he did the song with "No we HAVEN'T forgotten, Darryl!" Worley.)
The rest of the songs are funny, but after listening to as much of "Here's Your Sign (Don't Mess With Us)" as I did, I barely raised my spirits back to the level they were at during Bill's stand-up material.
If you are anything like me, please immediately skip that song, or make a copy of it without it. Trust me, you'll want to.
