Presidential Suite

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
'Chilly' Gonzales proudly presents his 3rd album, the Baroque meets Broadway 'Presidential Suite'. Collaborations and tours with Peaches gave them the (in)famous name of 'Bonnie & Clyde of Prankster Rap'. The album is packed with Groucho-esque raps, self-help anthems, sarcastic love songs and odes to the popularity contest. 2002 on Kitty-Yo.

3 out of 5 stars A little too slick and a little too much Galway.......2004-01-16

Based on the reviews I read about this album, I had high expectations. I am sorry to say that the album leaves me a little cold. The performances are superb, but unspontaneous. Another difficulty is with the orchestrations. In most cases on this album I think the flute just doesn't work. A case in point is Lover's Waltz, which is near perfect in the original Ungar/Mason version. Galway's flute just doesn't exude the same warmth. Another disappointment is Heart of the Heartland, which could have been an interesting conversation between Galway's flute and Ostroushko's mandolin. Instead we get another showcase for Galway with Ostroushko relegated to backup musician--what a shame! The only track I think that works well on this album is The West Texas Waltz, where we get a taste of how a really collaborative album might have sounded. I guess this album makes good easy listening, but it is certainly not the engaging album I would have expected of these folks.

After a year or two of owning this album, I have to say that the performances are even more stale that when I first reviewed it. I wish they'd let me take a star back.

Good for folks who like "easy listening". I like musicians who aren't afraid to challenge each other and themselves. This album had that potential, but falls flat.........

5 out of 5 stars Very Compelling Classy Classical Appalachian.......2003-02-08

I get home from a hard day at the office and put on my headphones and am transported to heaven. If I had only two hours left of life on earth, I would want to listen to this album for one of them and we won't discuss the other hour please! Galway, Ungar, and Mason are superb. My wife and I were already of fan of Galway. Garrison Keillor's recommendation of "Waltzing with You" by Ungar and Mason (Sony) turned me on to Jay and Molly. Then on to "The Lover's Waltz" and "Harvest Home". The subtle blending and play between Galway's Flute, Jay's Fiddle, and Molly's Guitar . . . . God, there is nothing like it. If you buy this CD and don't like, I'll buy it off you and give it to a friend! ... Thanks Sir James, Jay and Molly.

5 out of 5 stars Is it the music or the musicians?.......2002-12-07

During the many times I have listened to this album, I have posed myself the same question: is it the music I like best or the musicians that perform it? The music is compellingly rich for sure, music that makes the home a resonant place to live in the same way that a dancing wood fire speaks to the eyes of the soul. But the music sings with a penetrating warmth because of the seasoned artistry of the musicians who perform it. I have to give the tilt to the musicians who will forever haunt me with the flickering flames of their performance.

5 out of 5 stars A National Treasure.......2002-10-20

This meeting of musical minds was a stroke of creative matchmaking by RCA. James Galway, the renowned flutist blends but does not blur with two of American folk music's more deeply rooted musical thinkers -- Jay Ungar & Molly Mason. Right from the start, "My Cape Breton Home," the art and craftsmanship, the painstaking selection and arrangement is evident. And this CD continues to delight the mind with an hour of the most beautiful music. All tunes, whether old favorites, like Stephen Foster's "Gentle Annie," or new and original, like "West Texas Waltz" by Jay Ungar, come together as naturally as the confluence of many streams. It seems as if you know these songs so well, which in my case is surprising, but perhaps not so surprising from a CD with Jay Ungar on it, composer of the evocative song for all time, "Ashokan Farewell." This piece has become a de facto theme for millions of people who heard it played again and again in the Ken Burns documentary on The Civil War.

The instrumentation, as you might expect, is the main feature of the CD. Flute, fiddle, piano, mandolin, guitar. But at what seems to be exactly the right time, Molly Mason and Ruth Ungar (Jay's daughter) voices sing out in harmony. And there is a deep understanding of the music here too, and therefore, much beauty in the sound. The rendering of "Pretty Saro" could stand alone as a classic, but when you hear it in order and against the background meticulously prepared by these musicians, it has a presence that is truly haunting.

I think anyone with a taste for the roots of American folk music will enjoy this CD. It has deepened my appreciation of the folk music of America and even the rural environment where I live in America. The art and craft are impeccable. "A Song of Home" is from beginning to end, thoroughly enjoyable, much to think about, a heritage to keep.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyed very much despite muted scratchy sound on last track.......2007-02-07

I gave this to my father. He was thrilled by the collection of songs. He said the last track was a little scratchy and lower volume but that the sound quality of all of the other tracks was great.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band and Greater Music.......2006-03-18

Having taught music for 41 years, I do appreciate the quality of a good band, good music and a good recording. This series is all three! My only complaint is that the CD's are not long enough. I would like to have them last much longer. Enjoyed them very much!

3 out of 5 stars A Moderate Sampling of Sousa.......2003-12-04

Actually one of the better CDs of the limited Altissimo! line of products. At least we have the Marine band playing Sousa, as it should be, but many of the selections are what we have heard already on countless CDs of Sousa. A few of the selections here are different and worthwhile. The problems we encounter are a mixture of recording styles taken from different internal tracks from the Marine Band Library. These recordings were never intended for commercial use. Hence the un-even sound at times. Also the brief durration of the CD indicates as well that it was never intended for public use. Finally, lack of any worthwhile liner notes tops off a rather un-professional job overall.

5 out of 5 stars Start of a great series for Sousa admirers.......2002-09-07

The President's Own play these like no other ensemble. I don't know what the current occupant of the White House thinks about them, but this wind ensemble is a national treasure in my book. This whole series is highly recommended. They play with more energy than the fine musicians of the Detroit Concert Band who sound a little bored on the complete Walking Frog set. They are a much finer ensemble, playing with greater precision and balance than Kieth Brion's British players on Naxos. The only weakness is in the documentation. There is none. We are not even told who the excellent conductor is. But that doesn't prevent one from enjoying the inspiring performances. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Sousa Played as only the Marines can do.......2001-11-01

This release by Altissimo! is a great collection of Sousa Recordings played by the band that Sousa made great. There are tons of Sousa recordings out there, but none feature the US Marine band. Sousa marches don't sound the same until you have heard them played by the Marines. Sousa wrote many of these marches while bandmaster of the Marines, thus the reason why the renditions of these works are so excellent here. The band playes with a real drive and energy, the likes of which few can compare. While not a large selection of marches, this CD is only volume one of a four volume set of Sousa's music featuring the US Marine band. (...) Now more than ever, with our nation in crisis, we need the inspired music of our great service bands.

4 out of 5 stars Hail To the Thief!.......2005-08-06

Despite the fact that most of our presidents are not worth remembering in music; this is none the less an interesting CD. Altissimo! has done its usualy bit of culling through the Marine Band library to dig out enough appropriate pieces to put together on one CD. No original recordings here! We should be glad that its a full length selection of over 60 mins for a change, instead of the old 45 min. cheats in the past! Still, the different sound qualities of the various tracks is distracting at times.

Most labels when they combine different recordings together usually list the recording date and who conducted the band at that time. Altissimo! has not graduated to that level of professionalism in their products yet. Hence we just get The US Marine Band, not when it was recorded and who might be directing it!

Fortunately, the quality of the Marine Band is so good that it does not matter what Altissimo! does in putting together a CD. That said, the music provides an interesting chronology of ceremonial music played at the White House over the years. The linear notes are an improvment over the past, when little or nothing was provided. All and all, not bad from what we have come to expect from Altissimo!

4 out of 5 stars Hail to the Chief.......2005-02-02

Hail to the Chief is the latest of about twenty-seven CDs offered by "Altissimo!", which offer recordings of the USA's fine military service musical organizations. Until Altissimo!, these recording were very rare and just about impossible to find. Thanks to Altissimo! every one can appreciate and enjoy the fine music of these top-notch musical organizations.
The program in Hail to the Chief is a tribute to our presidents. It is a varied program that shows the depth of the music played by one of America's oldest, established in 1798, and finest musical organizations, the United States Marine Band. This CD contains twenty-one marches and other classical numbers from Sousa to Strauss to Tchaikovsky. Some of the music in the CD is rare and for this reason alone of interest to music history buffs. One of these selections is a recording of the "Star-Spangled Banner" using the earliest published arrangement (1814) of the anthem. Another is the "Solemn March" played at Lincoln's funeral. Also included a rarely recorded Sousa piece, "Easter Monday on the White House Lawn." There is also an historic 1906 recording of Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag."
The recording also contains excerpts from speeches made by five of our presidents four of which were from inaugural addresses. The program notes explain the musical selections and how each was of interest to the various presidents.
The only negative, and it is not with the CD itself, is that the program notes do not include recording dates, where recorded and who the conductor of the band was. I highly recommend this CD to all interested in the America's patriotic music as well as the serious collector of military music and those interested in the musical roots of our country.
George Barkman

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Altissimo! Release.......2005-01-13

Listening to the latest CD from Altissimo! brought pleasure to my ears. Whether you like listening to ballads, waltzes, Hungarian Dances, or marches you will find something on this CD that you will love to listen to. This wonderful compilation presents the listener with music favored by 23 of our United States Presidents, and includes bonus tracks of excerpts from four inaugural speeches.

5 out of 5 stars Hail to the Chief.......2005-01-11

Hail to the Chief is unique, educational and without question, absolutely wonderful!

I was initially puzzled by the selections but as I began to listen and read the short narrative that is offered I started to realize I was being taken on a very different trip through American history. Consequently, the impact of the program had a totally unexpected and fascinating effect.

I was not just mesmerized by the sounds I heard, the arrangements which were presented or the memorable utterances of some of our Chief Executives. I was completely entranced by the realization that these men and others who had held the office of President of the United States, had listened and reacted to the same music the CD offers. It gave me an insight into their humanity that text books cannot provide.

As an example, I hadn't known the original sheet music for the "Star Spangled Banner" was arranged differently from the way we listen to it today --- who know how many Americans heard it played that way?

I had never actually thought about the fact that Washington might have actually heard "Hail Columbia" played, just as I was hearing it.

I was a bit startled that Chester Arthur commanded Sousa to compose what became the "Presidential Polonaise" and tried to imagine how much pressure he, (Sousa), must have felt in doing the President's bidding. (By the way, after listening to that unquestionably superb composition of the "March King", I must admit despite its delightful sound, I'm very pleased that we no longer use that as the official march of the President and we have returned to "Hail to the Chief".)

I vividly recall watching the casket of President Kennedy being carried over the steps of the Capitol and listening to "The Navy Hymn" and the music recaptured that moment as if it was yesterday.

It wasn't solely the music I savored but it was also the historical images they engendered. Indeed, music affects all "ages"!

The CD is a professional product that will hopefully be enjoyed by thousands for many years to come.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Three Choral Masterworks Including a Menotti Treasure.......2005-09-06

Kudos to The Carolina Chm Chorale and Timothy Koch for recording these three works. The first two works are engaging, witty, and accessible works for a cappella Chorus and soloists. 'Presidential Suite' by Jack Gottlieb is based on words by famous presidents (e.g. 'Ask not' by JFK) and is fine choral writing. 'A Medieval Bestiary, for chorus' by R. Murray Schafer describes the various creatures of the jungle and of mythology and uses solo voices in tandem with the chorus to bring each animal alive.

But the important work on this recording is the exquisite Madrigal Fable for Chorus, 10 dancers and 9 instruments - THE UNICORN, THE GORGON AND THE MANTICORE composed by Gian Carlo Menotti. This wondrous work tells the story of a strange man in a castle 'who doesn't even go to church on Sundays' and who parades his various 'beasts' of the title through the town on three consecutive Sundays. The prince of the village, egged on by his envious wife, mimics the strange man, procuring the odd beasts, and the envy of the unknown eventually drives the village to accept the fact that the strange man is simply a poet.

The work is written as a ballet/mime and has had intermittent festival performances. It is a beautiful story, with Menotti's finest choral writing, and interspersed with the madrigal narrative are instrumental interludes for nine instruments that are likewise some of Menotti's best chamber writing. The visual aspects of this work greatly enhance the appreciation of the superb piece, but this performance conducted by Timothy Koch is very fine. This is a lesser-known work that would be a welcome addition to those who love choral music and modern interpretations of the art of madrigal singing. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, September 05

5 out of 5 stars Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops are as American as apple pie.......2000-07-16

For those of us who have enjoyed the irrepressible Maestro Kunzel and the effevescent Cincinnati Pops Orchestra for so many years both live, on Cd and on PBS, this collection of Americana is as good as it gets. Sousa, long revered as America's March King, shines on these discs as the composer of delightful dance tunes and even 'The Presidential Polonaise' a worthy contender with the weighty European prcessional. Its a pity that the President doesn't trot this out for White House functions. The tunes are every bit a Fourth of July celebration. The spoken word piece, 'Casey at the Bat' couldn't have a better narrator than Johnny Bench,a man who knows the score about baseball. So, if you want to have yourself up and marching and dancing and laughing around the house, buy this collection and treat youself to a holiday any day of the year.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice Selection.......2004-11-28

This is a nice selection of Sousa music. While I much prefer a military band to play these works, this orchestra does a spirited job. Under Keith Brian the interpretations are inspired. There is also a lot of material not often played, including many overtures, dances, novelties, etc. Sousa should be remembered for far more besides his many excellent marches. His works spanned the entire globe of music, and he was a far more versatile composer than posterity has given him credit for. This excellent budget series by Naxos deserves a lot of credit for putting on these many fine CDs of of his works.

    Album Description

'Chilly' Gonzales proudly presents his 3rd album, the Baroque meets Broadway 'Presidential Suite'. Collaborations and tours with Peaches gave them the (in)famous name of 'Bonnie & Clyde of Prankster Rap'. The album is packed with Groucho-esque raps, self-help anthems, sarcastic love songs and odes to the popularity contest. 2002 on Kitty-Yo.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars More Gonzales please.......2003-01-05

Gonzales uber Alles is the better album (still in the category I call, for lack of a better word, "lounge rap") but no way will you get me to give this less than 5 stars, given the wasteland of mediocre music that it fights through. Chilly is *smart*. The same way Frank Zappa and Mike Patton was/are smart. Please, if you are stupid and don't "get it," buy a copy for your clever friends. Buy lots of copies and maybe Chilly will record more.

I love "Shameless Eyes." How I love to see them cry.

Wish there were more Peaches on this CD but now I have my copy of the Teaches of Peaches. Har har har. (Completely different than Chilly but also a keeper.)

    4 out of 5 stars infectious.......2002-09-22

They say AIDS isn't real. Neither is this music, but I can't stop listening to it. Who is this guy? He's an absolutely brilliant producer. Gonzales Uber Alles is his definitive release. The Entertainist was entertaining upon one listen. But The Presidential Suite is a return to form. Almost every track virally attacks your brain, and you can't shake it.

5 out of 5 stars oh so very very worth buying.......2002-07-28

Quirky, well produced, resonant beats. Quirky, quirky is the word! Unusual, original and catchy lyrics. Gonzales is whacked out in the most delightful way. - The best album, across all genres, I've heard in a year.
