4 out of 5 stars Let the future begin!.......2002-03-07

Lee Coombs is a member of the breakbeats vanguard that threatens to blow up the music scene in 2002. Breakbeat to me is what you get when you cross speeded-up hip-hop with house/trance beats. This album is a superb example of the genre. Think of BT, Adam Freeland, Freq Nasty, Koma and Bones. Get the picture? There are remixes here - of Quivver and Sister Bliss tunes - and original artist's material from various guises. The common theme is funky, tribal beats and excellent production. Groovy beats, deep bass and samples from Apocalypse Now (one of the best movies of all time) characterize Skyjuice. Other favorites are Dance to the House, an 8 min scorcher. Thrust 2 and Air Guitar (too short). My only slight knock on this is that it sounds a bit the same from track to track (partly due to the mixed style of the album). However, this is not a bad thing when you sound this good. Take a chance on Mr. Coombs, I think you'll be glad that you did.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Awesome songs. Horrible Audio.......2005-08-04

Basically the track list and mixing are great. The songs picked are really great and the way Donald Glaude (the DJ who mixed this CD) put them together is just as good. But there is a problem. This CD doesn't sound like a CD. It sounds like a cassette tape, and not a very good one at that. Here lies the problem with this CD.

Donald Glaude has to be given his accolades for putting this together. Tracks like FREE YOUR MIND, DUSK and LA LA LA are just some of the really sweet songs that are in this CD. There are just a few tracks that I'm not thrilled with (like NEW GROOVE). These great songs are the only reason this CD doesn't get a much lower rating.

It seems Glaude created this CD by recording directly from two turntables as he is doing the mixing live. Sounds cool, right? Well... no. Whatever equipment he used to record and master that amazing mix had to be ultra low-end on the quality scale because the actual audio you come up with is horrid. You get distorted, muddy, lifeless sound that doesn't deserve to be on a CD.

You're better off finding these songs from some other sources (good luck), however give credit to Donald for putting them together for you. As for buying this CD only do it if you want to use it for preview purposes or do not care about audio fidelity in any way.

2 out of 5 stars Ok, not great.......2002-01-23

I like a few tracks. The sound quality to me sounded terrible - like the high end got cut off.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get better than this!.......2000-12-08

This is an outstanding album and one of the most-played in my collection since its release. Thrive has introduced me to some of the best in dj-dance-electronica-call-it-what-you-will.

I concur with my fellow reviewers. This is a CD that can be played all day. The smooth grooves of DJ Donald Glaude never wear out after hours of listening. This music relaxes and energizes me at the same time and gets me through a day of work. Catch Thrive's second sampling of the future, it is also great. Now where is volume III?

5 out of 5 stars Very Phat.......1999-08-02

3 words : Get this CD.

This is quality work from around the area, good old Seattle.

Dj work, by Donald Glaude at it's finest.

:)

Stays in the CD changer. [period]

5 out of 5 stars Straight up funk.......2000-03-03

Great compilation, best in the series IMO. Big beat, electro, hip-hop mixed up by the Freestylers. Of course a few of their songs are thrown in for good measure. Serious beats with a sense of humor. 2 CDs well worth the cost.

5 out of 5 stars The Best ever Compelation Ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......1999-02-10

Well this album is the best collection of songs that I`ve ever listened to!! It has everything anyone would want from a album, Big beat songs such as Dont Stop and Cheesy songs like Sounds of the Wickedness, funy songs from Wubble you and Cool songs from Cut and Paste and The Jungle brothers. I could write a whole book about this album... If you want to start off your collection of CD`S of Round off the century with a album which represents the latter half of the nighties then this album is for you!!! It`s remixed by the Freestylers which in itself is a good enough reason to by it, and no Buts or Howevers for this album

5 out of 5 stars My All-Time Favorite Mix CD.......2005-09-08

Eli Starr really lays it down in this CD. And yes, it is by far my favorite CD of all time for it's perfect mixing, and fabulous track choices. I especially like how he uses an unreleased remix of LSG! (OMG!!!) Eli's pristine transitions coupled with the very light hearted, and surreal sounds of the tracks he's selected in this one make for a very trippy, extacy-like sound that is perfect to get that lil party of yours goin.. Knawm'sayin?

4 out of 5 stars This album has REAL MOMENTUM.......1999-09-21

Eli's "lift me up" and "borobudur" are absolutely phenominal. The melodic quality of these tracks really set them apart. All the ather tracks are great too.
