The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

I was searching everywhere for a way to include Pink Floyd in my very traditional wedding. Instead of walking down the aisle to "Here Comes the Bride", I'm using this version of "Comfortably Numb". I love this CD, but should warn you not to expect the "mind trip" that was Pink Floyd. And yes I am a huge Pink Floyd fan. This is a CD you could put on at dinner at your grandmother's and have her think it is beautiful. Worth giving a chance.

Don't Expect Pink Floyd.......2006-02-08

I enjoy string quartets and looked forward to this. Whereas Mozart, Beethoven and other classical or romantic composers are the masters of quartets due to their counterpoint and fugue, Pink Floyd music does not translate into string quartets. There is no power here, no dynamics; all necessary to Pink Floyd music. I kept wanting some electrification! The piano is capable of power, but not allowed to sound off in this recording and only provides an accompaniment to the mellow strings. It was boring. Does not have the complexity of the masters to maintain interest. Go to the classics with all their structure to enjoy string quartets for listening pleasure. Or, this could be a nice change for background at a dinner or reception where it's not cool to blast the speakers with real Pink Floyd.

Pink Floyd is my favorite band, but this is my favorite CD! The quality of the music is excellent. Even if you are not a Pink Floyd fan, this is still an excellent CD.

Just awful.......2005-06-15

I am an avid collector of all things Pink Floyd, including tribute albums. Of course none of them live up to the real thing, but this 'tribute' really does a terrible disservice to their music. For something of this ilk, go with either the Symphonic Pink Floyd "Us & Them" or the Royal Philharmonic Tribute. Only buy this one if you own EVERY other tribute CD ever made for Pink Floyd's music.

Somewhat disappointing.......2005-09-25

There are some unique and interesting songs of this album. Unfortunately the performance does not shine. I found the singing and accompaniment a bit slow and monotonous and uninspired. Furthermore, it was difficult to understand the words at times (indistinct enunciation). There are a few exceptions: tracks 3, 4, 9, 20, 21 I gave 3 stars in iTunes; all the rest got two stars or less. If you want beautiful, traditional choral music, I recommend any of the albums featuring the Cambridge Singers over this collection.

They stop Faux Nobody!.......2004-03-17

To fully appreciate Les Sans Culottes- one must either speak French (not moi) or visit their website. The lyrics are pure genius- and I don't even know if SOS Elephants; a song that mentions fat pachyderms and politician in the same verse can be translated back! It's not "revisionist" or "reductionist" in the way that EVERY pop band on MTV is. (Puff Daddy anyone?!) They are truly original, and it's too bad they have to be compared to "homage" bands when Justin Timberlake, Creed, Staind, 50 Cent, Britney, Linkin Part aren't.

I Do It Without Underpants Too.......2003-11-29

Les Sans Culottes, which translates to "those without undergarments," with their campy sex vibe, would sound at home in any of the Austin Powers films and should the Man of Mystery go to Paris to meet Octo-pusé, LSC would definitely follow him there. "Demimonde" with its mystery and show-stopping chorus even sounds like a lost James Bond theme. You can get an idea of the Brooklyn-based band's approach and sentiment just from the names of their deux chanteuses, Kit Kat le Noir and Celine Dijon. Disc opener, "Sa Sabine," sets the stage for much of Faux Realism with it's backing harmonies and party atmosphere. "Balzac 7502" is nostalgically reminiscent of the music of the Gallic past as "SOS Elephants" sounds like They Might Be Giants filtered through red wine and Roquefort. "Ecole de Merde" is French garage pop at its finest and "Le Cog Sportif" translates perfectly the live energy of their shows to your living room. Album standout, "The Tongue of Romance," mocks many of the wonderful things the world has received from LSC's home and sarcastically features the opening notes of classical standard "Fur Elise" played on a concertina. Recently, their tunes can be heard in commercials by Hewlett Packard and most episodes of The Real World: Paris. If the Nineties brought the J-Pop & Britpop invasions, Les Sans Culottes with their ironic party kitsch could be the one to usher in the Franco-phoney wave of "Grand Guignol Roque & Roll" in this new millennium.

Oh, my. I have no idea how to explain Les Sans Culottes. The name of the band is, crudely, "Those who wear no underwear". They are so ultra-cool that nobody much yet knows who they are yet. They are simlutaneously the antidote to high school French and a weapon of mass destruction aimed at the boring junk put out by the major labels today.

I heard the live version of "Funky Peripherique" on local college radio (KCOU) and ordered the CD the same day. Listen to the samples here and on the band's eponymous web-site, and you could well be hooked, too. I guess they are best described as a cross between the B-52s and Jacques Chirac....The melodies are infectious, while the lyrics are allegedly French (or as French as you'll get from a a ye-ye pop band that comes from Brooklyn).

Revivalist of french garage rock. Except without any of the charm, style, or greasy wit of that genre. Trite and boring. Dependency on nostalgia to use as a platform for anything is proof of an intellectual bankruptcy...so is the music of LSC. Worthless.

Though Horne is audibly at the end of her long and rich career, she did a good deed for American music with this disc, which consists of songs by Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, and a new song cycle by William Bolcom, from which the disc takes its title. Horne's voice has a quiver, a lack of center, almost as if it refuses to stop singing Rossini (Horne's lifelong specialty). However, it's worth buying for the Bolcom cycle, which is one of his best vocal works, typically an eclectic, natural outgrowth of Bernstein's style with Horne gamely employing a wide range of vocal techniques with more eloquence than one could hope for. --David Patrick Stearns

This is AMERICAN SONGS at their most moving and emotional best, not to mention with great melody. Unlike a lot of American song literature (not broadway type, but "serious classical art songs"), these songs are actually quite beautiful, melodic, and can touch the heart of the listener easily. There is no strain to enjoy them. There is a bit of "sameness" between them, which is my only complaint about this recording; one piece starts to sound like another, especially if you are not listening carefully while listening. Even then, it is still very lovely.

It has been mentioned that Horne is now far past her prime, and that may be, but even far past her prime she is far better than most singers half her age. There is still vibrancy, life, and depth to her voice. It communicates on a very deep level. Martin Katz, her life long accompanist, is, as usual, a revelation as an accompanist. Unlike people think, the accompanist just doesn't play in the background, he is a very vital part of making a performance work. Accompaning singers is a very new art form, and many performers of earlier ages simply had very bad accompanist. With Gerald Moore we started to have people who knew how to support the singer, actually adding to the performance giving it depth and helping the singer shine. Now we are so used to good accompanist, and are so accustomed to their high level of performance, it is very easy to forget what they add.

Katz knows Horne well, and is fully aware of when she is having troubles supporting a phrase, or when she is in best voice. He gives so much to her awesome performance through his very sensitive way of playing this music.

I would recommend this for anyone to buy: fans of modern art songs, fans of Marilyn Horne, and simply fans of good singing.

Throughout the Barber, Bolcom and Bernstein, Marilyn Horne uses her ability to combine technical definition with artistic movement and expansion. Having had the opportunity to see her perform this literature live was an emotionally elevating experience. The way Horne and Katz have reworked a few of the Berstein pieces brings new life and perspectuve to these already wonderful pieces. I highly recommend this recording for the casual classical listener, as well as, for the student that enjoys learning from a master through their art.

People may look at Lucie Silva's and say "Not another young blondie pop singer"... and that's right, she's not! She's a mixture of Celine Dion style ballads, Michelle Branch's soulful expression with a fresh hip edge. Her voice is individual, and although some of the music does seem recycled, and lines can develop predictable endings (can't they all?) she's got a great style. I'd recommend this album for any Delta Goodrem fans, because it outweighs her by far (Sorry Delta!). She's such a talented young lady, I hope this album takes her to the top. And it's so catchy and soulfull, I'm sure it will.

I hope this CD breaks into the US music scene because it will make her a worldwide star. The entire CD is absolutely wonderful and is a keeper. Her first release, "What You're Made Of" is what prompted me to buy it but I've fallen in love with so many of the songs that it's hard to pick a favorite. There's not one song that disappoints and her CD is well worth buying!

Impeccably Performed, Stunning Sound.......1998-11-20

The beautifully captured reverberant sound of the acoustic space is matched by gorgeous choral balance, precise diction, and definitive interpretation. In spite of the contemporary style of the compositions - Rorem doesn't shy away from crunchy dissonances - this is a very enjoyable collection of Choral music with many beautfiul moments.
