A Split Second [EP]

Nothing breaches the borders of Industrial Land here. A typical late-'80s Wax Trax! album, it's got all you'd expect from a proper industrial band: distorted vocals, foreboding moods, and jackhammer rhythms. This album was created just as MIDI technology was becoming accessible to most synth composers, so one must admire the technical fortitude required to create an album such as this. However, it is not particularly memorable music. --Beth Bessmer

5 out of 5 stars Finally and Fulfilling!.......2005-10-28

Believe the hype, _Shining_ fans. These bits and pieces of music - volume 1 focuses more on "studio music and textures" of the themes devised for the film while volume 2 spends its allotted tracks on the more fully developed orchestra tracks - hold just about everything. I'll encourage you to follow that impulse/interest and add this work to your collection.

What do you get? Well, for me, the treat was volume 2's first track - the film's title track - Ms Carlos explains why Kubrick nixed it - but it is as haunting as the final draft that follows Jack Torrance's lil yellow bug to The Overlook climbing the Rockies. The other tracks are renderings and attempts to put the novel into music forms. The liner notes are great - like a listening session over coffee with the composer.

Both volumes are must haves for those of us all agog over the film's score (and scoring possibilities) but if you just want to hold a haunting, get volume 2 and put track one on repeat until you, that hag hottie in the tub, or your six year old's index finger hollers, "redrum!"

5 out of 5 stars Settling Old Scores.......2005-10-10

This second volume of Wendy's lost film soundtracks concentrates more on her full orchestral scores. Although she achieved fame as a synthesist, one reason she succeeded so well is her knowledge of and attention to timbral colors and the placement of different voices -- in short, orchestration. It should come as little surprise therefore that when writing for a full orchestra she's fully accomplished and impressively skilled.

Synthesizer cues are also included, from early (1981) novelty demonstrations for Dolby Labs to later (1998) soundtrack work utilizing her state-of-the-art digital synthesizers.

As usual for her, voluminous liner notes detail not only the working methods behind each of the pieces, but also glimpses into the politics and disappointments that delayed the release of these tracks. How many composers could survive having a significant portion of their career locked away in a vault for 25 years?

    Album Description

The Real Rock 'n Roll Deal! The time has arrived, This is primal, archetypal, balls out rock that just does not let up for one split second and whose big beats and raucous hooks will change and inspire air-guitar wrestling matches. Filled with high-energy kicks, blistering guitar flash, arena-ready anthems, unforgettable hooks and catchy fist-pumpers-this is the barn-burner and five-geared raver that fans have been waiting for, and a breathless, potent cocktail for new ones. As always, filled with highly accomplished and inspired approximations of such sounds as The Who and The Move and a host of other pantheon-chiseled rock gods, all dressed up to party with The Shazam. Not Lame. 2002.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing ...Finally.......2004-05-21

There are no need for comparisons here. The Shazam is simply 'The Shazam' - They Am What They Am. I couldn't believe what I was hearing on this album. "Tomorrow The World" is a rock 'n roll album - a real one. A great one. An amazing rock 'n' roll album by a genuine, 100% authentic rock 'n' roll band. This is one of those rare albums that will remain in your CD collection until the day you die. If the catchy, soaring melodies in "Gettin' Higher" don't grab you - then the rockin' guitar riffs of "Rockin' And Rollin' (with my) Rock 'n' Roll Rock 'n' Roller will. This album is pure rock 'n' roll spirit. Its clever enough to make a strong statement without being too serious. Its powerful enough to make you feel like the songs sound. Its inspiring enough to reignite your rock 'n' roll dreams and keep them alive. This album is a 'hit' - not because its on top of the charts - but because it has everything that all great rock 'n' roll albums have that make you want to know everything there is to know about the band, buy their t-shirts and posters, read all the linear notes and every lyric...this is the kind of music that makes people care about music. This is the music that means something to people. Buy this album. Don't wait around for J-Lo or Justin Timberlake to endorse it. These days you have to seek out great music. If you are lucky enough to discover "Tomorrow The World" then you'll find great music. This is one of the greatest, most underrated rock 'n' roll albums I've ever heard. Buy it, Listen, Love It, And "Squeeze The Day."

5 out of 5 stars Record Of The Year.......2003-02-06

I concur with previous descriptions. An astounding record, filled with big hooks, big heart, and passion. Shazam take their cues from the Who and the Move as much from the Cars and the Plimsouls. "Squeeze The Day" stands out even among this collection--one of those rare, elegiac rockers that remind us of the fleetingness of life. Reminded me of XTC. But enough comparisons. Get the record.

Living within the advanced technology that surround us every day one can appreciate the work of these belgium boys through the last 15 years when they started back in the 80's the unique rythms that made them well known around the world.Listen to "crime wave" or "Mambo witch".

Songs like "Check it Out" and "Scandinavian Bellydance" surge with great industrial beat. If you like industrial dance you'll like this album. "Rigor Mortis" is the true anthem of underground club dance. Its remarkable its staying power through the years. It ranks with "Headhunter" - Front 242 and "Head Like a Hole" - Nine Inch Nails for shear power and edgy beat. Also check out "Mambo Witch" not found on this album but can be found as import EP.

Marc Icxx and Pete Boone (formerly Chrismar Chayelle) went
a new direction with this release. Not only changing record
labels (antler/subway-caroline to hypnobeat), but their sound
all together. Icxx's strange musings and growls remain but
the music gets odd and undanceable to put it lightly. Guitars
are now a permanent basis for this once dancefloor mainstay.
Recommend this very very hard to find disc for the truly fond
A Split-Second fans that have open ears. Fans of KMFDM's
"Don't Blow Your Top" album might enjoy Vengeance COD.

If you have heard this CD and thought it was great get 'Mental Notes' and be blown away. This CD has many of the songs from the first recorded but cleaned up a bit. That was a mistake. The rawness of the sound from the first CD was brilliant. Plus they miss some of the great epic songs (sound poems) of Mr Judd.

          5 out of 5 stars great album.......2004-07-05

This is Split Enz second album the reason that a lot of the songs from Mental Notes appear on this release is that after Mental Notes was released Phil Manzanera from Roxy Music took some interest in the band and produced this album thus re-recording some of his favourite songs from Mental Notes.

          5 out of 5 stars Mental Notes!.......2003-11-10

I'm a bit confused with the titles of these CD's. My introduction to Split Enz was in 1976 with the purchase of Mental Notes, on Chrysalis Records, CHR 1131. The track listing on my LP is exactly the same as this CD, but with the addition of Mental Notes at the end of side 2, a bizarre 30 second long vocals/guitar ditty.

Fantastic record! At a time when prog rock was running out of steam and punk had yet to hit the scene, Mental Notes was fresh, exciting, and unique. It still is and holds up under repeated listening. One of my favorites from 1976.

5 out of 5 stars Split Enz soaring with Phil Judd.......2003-10-26

This was a great Split Enz album with side B being almost flawless. The follow up without Phil Judd lacked much of the uniqueness of Second Thoughts. After Split Enz split up in the late 80's Noel Crombie and Nigel Griggs joined up again with Phil Judd to form the band Schnell Fenster and they released 2 albums. The first was called "The sound of trees" and can be found quite easily but the second "OK alright uh huh oh yeah" is a much harder find. Both of these efforts are brilliant and rewards the listener who listens repeatedly. I would urge anyone who likes the Enz to search for the Schnell Fenster efforts as they are some of the best music I've ever heard.

4 out of 5 stars Coming Back for Seconds.......2003-08-31

England was the country where Tim Finn believed Split Enz were going to set the music world on fire. After a short detour to Australia (a "stepping stone" as Finn called it), Split Enz flew into the U.K. just as the punk movement was setting in. With punk, songs were short, tuneless and loud, and it didn't matter if you couldn't play an instrument. Obviously, Split Enz were going to be the odd ones out again.

While "Second Thoughts" is Split Enz' second album, it could also be described as a second attempt. A lot of the songs on "Second Thoughts" are re-recordings of songs that appeared on their first album "Mental Notes".

On this album the saxophonist Rob Gillies replaced Wally Wilkinson (who played guitar on "Mental Notes"). Wally was fired because the rest of the band wrongly believed his guitar playing on "Mental Notes" was "less than satisfactory". Also, Phil Judd was becoming more confident with the electric guitar. So Rob Gillies came into the fold. His head replaced Wally's on the U.K. cover painting of the next record.

I actually got "Second Thoughts" before "Mental Notes" (see review) and I have to say that this is the one I prefer. Somehow "Second Thoughts" seems more user friendly. Unfortunately, like "Mental Notes", "Second Thoughts" got little to no airplay. This was an understandable frustration for the band because their live shows were usually a great success. There was argument among the listeners over whether Split Enz were punk or not. Ultimately, Finn said, it was decided they weren't. Finn also said that Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious hated Split Enz.

The song I probably like best is Phil Judd's "Sweet Dreams". "Lovey Dovey" is nice and manic too. An earlier member of the band, Miles Golding, also plays violin on a couple of the tracks. "Second Thoughts" is reminiscent of the old-fashioned music hall in some ways. It would be the last album to feature Phil Judd, Mike Chunn and Paul Crowther. Thereafter, the band's music would evolve (or de-evolve?) into the commercially successful singles of the early 1980s. For me, the 1980s was when Split Enz really shone.
