About the Artist
Bryan "Braille" Winchester was borin in Portland, Oregon in 1981. He has also lived in New Jersey, and California but is usually found touring the country.

Growing up in Portland, Braille started making bedroom tapes at the age of 13. These tapes are laughable now, but it was that first spark of creating that continued to push him down this path. Between ages 14 and 15 he started recording in studios around Oregon. It went from four tracks to digital 8 tracks, and so forth. His first release was under the name Reflection and it was called "The Greyhound Sampler". The name came from the fact that all the songs were recorded after taking trips on the greyhound bus. All material was recorded with Ill Tripp of Labklik, and Kyd Ryze (now known as Paul Wright).

Over the last 5 years Braille has been a part of over 5 different groups. The most notable of these, and probably the one that will last the longest is Lightheaded.

Shades of Grey,Braille,Syntax Records,Rap,This is hiphop music. Poetic, passionate, lyrical, clean, diverse, uplifting and unique.

The Beatles had the White Album, Metallica, a black album, and now Staind has its gray album. While lumped in with the often indistinguishable nu metal crowd, Staind stands out, thanks in part to memorable ballads, such as the pained and beautiful "It's Been A While" and "Epiphany" from the quartet's 2001 breakthrough Break the Cycle. Their latest represents a natural progression; realizing the commercial potential of the poignant but heavy rock ballad, they've penned a slew of them. The light and cheery "How About You" is radio-ready, while the layered, string-backed "So Far Away," and honest and grateful musing on success, is another get-out-the lighters showcase for singer Aaron Lewis. Lewis's beautiful ode for his baby, "Zoe Jane," a tribute to late Alice in Chains vocalist Layne Staley ("Layne," which intentionally and effectively cops Alice's signature sound), and the grandiose thank-you note "Intro" are more strong, overtly introspective entries in Lewis' sometimes mushy, sometimes touching CD diary. --Katherine Turman

Unfortunately i was waiting more of Staind but thats Life. Our expectations are somtetimes more that reality! lol

4 out of 5 stars Staind's weakest album........2007-06-01

Ok, I like staind alot, and I think that they are the best post-grundge band without a doubt, While bands that tried to sound like eddie veddger from pearl jam were all over the place, including the cliche' Creed. Staind had something about them that was unique. The last 2 albums were some of the best Nu-metal albums of all time in which has been a genre laughed at by some people, Staind actually were one of the few bright spots around that time with Dysfunction and Break the Cycle. 14 shades of gray is... really a ballad sallad Of songs. Some are well written, and well it really has nothing dynamic about it, nothing that makes you go "Wow". The lyrics, which I always found from Aaron lewis to be about hope, even in the last 2 albums (I don't really find the lyrics depressing, just very deep thinking) are the highlights of this album.

3 out of 5 stars Average album with too many slow songs........2007-02-03

Despite what other reviewers have said this album was not better than Break the cycle infact 14 Shades is a more slower and mellow album from Staind and it has gained more mainstream success from songs like So far away and Price to play which are not bad but I've heard alot better from Staind, the rest of the songs range from average to pretty good like the song Layne which is a tribute to Layne Staley from Alice in Chains and Reality which has a good chorus line, Zoe Jane was a very boring acoustic ballad which was dedicated to his daughter yawn!. The problem with 14 Shades is that it doesn't rock hard like the previous albums even though the singer Aaron Lewis is still able to write some good lyrics and the band is very talented unlike other Nu-metal bands out there.

5 out of 5 stars STAIND Rocks!.......2007-01-05

Excellent CD, the bonus DVD was a very nice surprise! Even if you already have this CD, it's worth buying again to get the DVD! STAIND!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-12-19

I'm a huge fan of this band and i must say that this rivals 'Dysfunction' as being their best record i think. It's an efficiently written record that i was sorry to see limp in at no.22 of the Irish music charts back in 2003 but then it's the fans that keep the music alive anyhow.
Definitely worth buying.

2 out of 5 stars Worst Staind album.......2006-07-25

13 tracks from Staind and only 3 are any good, huge disappointment from a great band. Thank god Chapter V is a great album.

3 out of 5 stars Staind Brown Cardigans.......2006-06-11

This CD was some how misfiled in the metal racks of the music store. A mistake, you'd have to think. The heaviest that 14 Shades of Grey gets is in the first song "Price To Play" which curiously was the album's commercial single. Maybe that says something in itself - the heavy stuff is (or used to be) what brought the fans in the door for Staind, not the 3 Doors Down-style rock.

Anyway, the album itself isn't a complete disaster. It hangs together with some reasonable melodies, but there's just a certain sameness, and slowness, that puts this release light years away from Staind's very good album, Dysfunction. Sure, bands mature and grow up, but that doesn't mean they have to put on the brown cardigans.

5 out of 5 stars With the Pressure On, Staind Comes Through.......2005-12-04

As a lot of their nu-metal counterparts were fading away in 2003 (see Limp Bizkit), Staind stepped up to the plate and hit a home run with the follow up to their extremely popular CD "Break the Cycle." "14 Shades of Grey" proved to be another commercial success for the quartet who hail from Massachusetts.

After the popularity of the successful power ballads, "Outside," "It's Been Awhile," and "Epiphany" from their previous release, Staind's first single off their 2003 album was a more heavier song entitled, "Price to Play." That garnered success on the rock charts, but failed to make an impact on top 40 radio, like "It's Been Awhile" and "Outside" did.

But one listen through the album, and you knew their were a few power ballads sitting their, just waiting to be introduced to the maintstream. Track 3, "So Far Away" was one of them. Following in the footsteps of "It's Been Awhile," the second single off this CD reached #1 on the rock and top 40 charts and kept Staind in the spotlight. The third single, "How About You" was very successful for the band as well.

With the addition of a new daughter (and I would assume the success of "Break the Cycle"), "14 Shades of Grey" has a more happier tone to it than the darker tones of the previous albums. "Zoe Jane" is a song written by Lewis to his daughter and "Intro" is a thank you message to all the people close to him. "Blow Away" is another excellent track that ranks toward the top of my all-time favorite Staind songs.

With label support and another world tour following the release of this CD, Staind proved to be a mainstay in the rock scene for at least a few more years--and made this fan look forward to another new Staind album in 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Staind- 14 Shades of Perfection.......2005-10-11

This CD, is the only CD is was lacking by Staind. I recently bought it, and after listening to all the tracks several times, I came out confused. Always, Staind has many strong songs on their albums, but on this one, I can't pick a definitive number of best tracks. Every song on this CD is good, most more than good. I recommend this CD, along with all of Staind's others, with full marks.

5 out of 5 stars Staind's Encore.......2005-07-12

Right after created a great cd like "Break the Cycle" they go and make another awesome cd called "14 Shades of Grey." I thought this cd kicked a**. The lyrics and beat are incredible. Some of the songs I would reccomend are PRICE TO PLAY, HOW ABOUT YOU, and SO FAR AWAY. If you don't believe me, I believe you can listen to some of the tracks on the main page for 14 shades of grey. Check out some of the tracks I listed and I'M SURE YOU"LL LOVE STAIND'S MUSIC!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2005-06-23

This album is amazing. Staind has very thought-provoking and deep lyrics to their songs, as well as great talent in how they portray them. That's all I have to say. What else is there to say about such a great band?
1)Price to Play: 5/5 - Incredible opening track. The heaviness almost catches me off guard every time! :) It talks about how the game of life is a bad influence on people.

2)How About You:4/5 - Cool track. It talks about the danger of conforming to make friends.

3)So Far Away: 4/5 - Another good song. The singer describes being far away from his problems with someone he loves.

4)Yesterday: 10/5 - My favorite track! It has the most amazing sound to it. And it sings about a guy being isolated, but no one caring.

5)Fray: 5/5 - Another great song. Very creepy lyrics. Its about a father's relationship with an anerexic daughter.

6)Zoe Jane: 5/5 - Great track, but very sad and very light. It sings about a father not having enough time for his daughter.

7)Fill Me Up: 5/5 - Cool track. It changes the mood a great deal with a little heaviness. And it sings about a guy loving being with his girlfriend.

8)Layne: 3/5 - An OK song. I don't listen to it that often tho. But it sings about a wife leaving her husband and child (perhaps by death), but still being there in spirit and helping them.

9)Falling Down: 5/5 - Cool song and very creative lyrics. It talks about a person being in their own world, but having a hard time coming back to reality.

10)Reality: 8/5 - Another one of my favorite tracks! Its so CREEPY!!! lol The lyrics really are amazing. It sings about a person stressed from life and trying to handle it with pills, conformity, and isolation. (And don't worry, it doesn't encourage drug use or anything). Amazing stuff!

11)Tonight: 4/5 - Another OK song, although I haven't heard it that much. But it sings about a father with his daughter not expecting so much hate from the world.

12)Could It Be: 5/5 - A very good song. Great mood and beat to it. And it sings about how a man can't change who he is at all.

13)Blow Away: 6/5 - Another really good one! And another very creepy one! It basically discusses how a man fears human mortality.

14)Intro: 9/5 - Another really good one!! Strange name for it tho. *.* But its really cool and creepy and just fits so well as an ending track. I don't know for sure what it sings about, tho.
As you can see, the numbers speak for themselves. This is a masterpiece album by Staind!

4 out of 5 stars Softer, but they finally have reached their full potential!.......2003-09-21

I totally agree with POD2, this CD is softer. But don't forget this is what Staind is meant to sound like, they've brought back the hard rock ballad. The songs are much more sadder and poignant than before. The standout song here that will bring most fans to tears is Aaron's tribute to his daughter, entitled "Zoe Jane". The song has a great musical ambience along with sad and passionate lyrics. People have lashed out at Staind for becoming too soft, they haven't. If you kindly would recall, wasn't Break The Cycle a slow album too? I agree that they have changed from the hard rock sound of Dysfunction, but I personally think that this is Staind Matured! Those that liked the hard rock sound of Break the Cycle will still be pleased with the rock on this CD, it's just a little softer. Do buy this and make Staind richer so they can continue making quality albums!

3 out of 5 stars kind of soft.......2003-07-15

This cd is softer compared to dysfunction and btc. And most of the songs sound the same including the sellout song so far away.Get dysfunction instead or btc.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2003-07-06

It looks as though the sun is finally shining through Staind’s dark and stormy life. Fans of Staind’s heavy-rocking raw sounds from “Dysfunction” but disliked the softer, more melodic tones of “Break the Cycle” will probably hate this new addition even more. Where as “Break the Cycle” had much less roaring guitars than previous works, there’s not even a hint of them in “14 Shades”. If you were hoping for a resurrection of Staind’s old sound, then quit reading now. But for those of us who liked “Break the Cycle” and were wishing for more softer stuff, here it is: 1) Price You Play - A moving song discussing the consequences of our choices. Great sound and awesome singing. One of my favorites. 2) How About You - Good sound behind lyrics asking listener to decide what kind of person they want to be. Very valid points are made on this song. 3) So Far Away - Another favorite. Excellent soft guitar melody, Lewis reflects on how much life has changed for himself and others. 4) Yesterday - A different sound for Staind on this song. Talks about rising above life’s challenges and finding yourself. Love the chorus. 5) Fray - Great song. Good sound, Lewis trying to convince us not to go down the same road that he did. 6) Zoe Jane - Best song on the album, best song by Staind. Aaron expresses boundless love for his daughter, Zoe Jane. The music is absolutely beautiful, magnifying Lewis’s incredible voice in such a way that I can hardly keep myself from crying each time I hear it. I live for songs like this. 7) Fill Me Up - Pretty good song. Cool guitar riff, I assume the song is directed to Lewis’s wife, thanking her for the strength she gives him. 8) Layne - Awesome song! A tribute to Alice in Chains lead singer Layne Staley. Written in Alice’s own style, this is the perfect song to remember Staley by. 9) Falling Down - Pretty cool track. Lyrics rebuke prideful people with a sort of ‘what goes around comes around’ attitude. Music’s pretty good. 10) Reality - Good song. Basically saying to live life the best you can and not be afraid of it; great music. 11) Tonight - Basically another good song about how things have changed. Music’s great and I absolutely LOVE the chorus. 12) Could It Be - One of my favorites! Interesting guitar sample, great chorus. Pretty much talking about being yourself, sort of. 13) Blow Away - A great song. Has a mournful kind of sound to it; Aaron singing regretfully about fading memories and how he wishes to be alone. 14) Intro - Good way to end the album. Aaron thanks the people that he loves and beats down on those he dislikes; music’s amazing and Lewis sings with compassion and anger; one of my favorites. It all sounds like Staind, just much calmer. “14 Shades of Grey” is Staind’s best album yet and everyone should own it. If your even thinking about getting it, then stop thinking and do it. If you liked “Break the Cycle” then you’ll love this one even more. Trust me.

5 out of 5 stars Phenominal Hip-Hop.......2007-04-08

Shades of Grey comes out of the gate swinging, and rolls like a freight train right through the finish line. For being somewhat of an unknown in the hip hop industry, Braille has compiled an incredibly fresh and original album. Every song on this disc has a strong lyrical presence, leaving your mind working long after the song is over. The beats are top notch, and produced by some of the most prominant names in the industry. While this album will probably not be discovered by most hip hop fans, it definately deserves its praise. It is very, very good. Who knew that shades of grey could be so colorful?

Album Description

Ever mindful of the lineage they have established, Autumn's Grey Solace stays true to their musical roots while introducing a driving and aggressive intensity to some tracks on Shades Of Grey, their fourth album. The album begins with "Treasure Box," a lush combination of layered female vocal harmonies and sugar-glazed guitars, slightly evocative of the Cocteau Twins' Blue Bell Knoll period. It is the second track, "Cold Sea," which finds this duo venturing into new sonic territories. The vocals are suave and attractive while the guitars are swirly and wet and driving; this track has an intensity not heard before from the band. It's not quite "rock," but it could certainly be described as "ethereal rock!" They quickly recede into the melancholy with "Last Tear," taking shoegazing down into the sub-contra with heavily effected 7-string guitar chords and abysmally deep bass lines. Erin Welton expands her vocal stylings on this track, creating some of her most expressive vocals ever. The middle of the album progresses with beautifully crystalline compositions, including the dreampop title track, "Shades Of Grey." Near the end of the album, songs like the dreamy "Edge Of The World" and "Still" retain the soft, heavenly qualities that Autumn's Grey Solace is known for on their previous albums.

Knowing that you need a little bit of light to define the shadows, Shades Of Grey takes the shoegazer genre in new directions and beyond, showing that Autumn's Grey Solace is evolving, yet retains the characteristics that have made their music popular with fans of the ethereal, shoegazer and dreampop genres. Shades Of Grey is incredible, leaving the listener breathless.

5 out of 5 stars Wow and then. . ........2007-06-28

This CD has the best song I've heard for a long time. "Cold Sea" is a lush loud (and atmospheric at the same time somehow) wonderful combination of sounds and melodies with some killer solo guitar work overlaid over Erin's lovely vocals. If you have a chance to listen to it off the CD on good headphones you'll be totally amazed at what is done and the production values. I'm afraid I'm going to go deaf because it is such a rush to listen to it loud on my headphone system but I'm addicted. An absolutely killer song that by itself makes it worthwhile to buy the CD and earn it 5 stars.

The rest of the CD is good but AGS sets the bar high with "Grey Sea." Can you guys do more of that please? There are some other good songs like "Treasure Box" "Angel of Light" and "Edge of the World". There really is only one song that I consistently skip so that says much.

Erin's voice is very nice when she stays in her range. Most of the CD is in her range and is very slow generally in its tempo which works well for her and keeps most of the music in the "shoegazer" category. How Scott remains subdued in these slower songs which dominate the CD I don't know.

I'm a fan of Mira and while overall Apart is still a better CD for my tastes this is definitely a worthwhile addition to your collection.

Scott and Erin - I'm no musical expert but if you could somehow move uptempo a bit more and let Scott use those considerable guitar skills he has to go more in the direction of "Cold Sea" you guys could really set yourselves apart (pun intended) from the pack.

5 out of 5 stars Simply stunning.......2007-02-07

I am a new fan of Autumn's Grey Solace. A friend of mine gave me a copy of the band's last album "Riverine". I liked what I heard but there wasn't anything that stood out with me from the album. I recently acquired a copy of the band's latest cd "Shades of Grey" and I thought it was a vast improvement over "Riverine". The first thing that I noticed when I started listening to the cd was how similiar the music was akin to the Cocteau Twins and a bit of Mazzy Star. I just love the combination of jangly guitars, Erin's clear ethereal vocals, and infectious melodies. They really worked together this time, making the music more memorable than on the last album. The production is immaculate. This is how recordings should sound. Erin's vocals are as clear as glass. They are not muddled up by over production or under production quality. The music has a nice live sound. The only flaw is that the songs sounds awfully alike but I can forgive the band for that, the music is much better on this album than on their previous. One of my favorite songs has to be the title track. It is upbeat and I just love how catchy the song is. It's a nice way to wake up in the morning. I also love the playful "Fodderwing". Normally I don't like that wispy vocals a lot of female singers have a tendency to sing with but I loved it in this case. The acoustic guitars added a nice touch to the song. I hope Autumn's Grey Solace continues to make albums that are as strong and consistent as "Shades of Grey" is. This would definitely make me a diehard fan.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT A WONDERFUL CD........2006-11-30

    Album Description

Hot on the heels of the highly acclaimed "Soul Mosaic" album comes this first ever commercially available mix CD. Greyboy is one of the original West Coast rare groove DJs and his jazz, funk, and soul collection runs deep. Mixing rarities with his own classics, "Several Shades Of Grey" represents the kind of set you might hear at a Greyboy DJ gig--eclectic, energetic, original, and presented with plenty of turntable flair.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars hip hop funk.......2004-12-25

i was very happy with this album, its either some of the funkiest hip hop djing or some of the freshest funk out there. Greyboy sets the perfect party atmosphere with out being poppy or clubby. get this album.

    4 out of 5 stars Rattatatafunkymatta.......2004-11-10

No originals here, save for 2 tracks of his "own" that Greyboy has remixed for the project. Interestingly enough, the 2 remixes are the worst moments that this particularly strong collection of rare grooves, has to offer. "Genvieve," the Cymande composition, is pretty weak sounding in a reggae format. And "Got to be a love" which absolutely cooks on Soul Mosaic, is reduced to studio blather here.

Now onto the good stuff. If you're a beat-head, tired of scouring shelves at huge, corporate record stores looking for 1 decent album - well here you go. You can probably find it at your local Top 40 music graveyard too.

So many tight, vintage jams you can't shake a stick at 'em - great part is that you probably haven't heard any of them. Most are of the funky 45 variety (2:30 minutes), but some of them stretch out and really jam.

If you're looking for a DJ album, all cut up and scratched, this ain't it. If you're looking for a old school comp, well this isn't really it either. If you're looking for almost an entire album's worth of rare grooves, mixed together almost seamlessly by one of the brightest heads in the industry, this is for you.

Note to Amazon: Please put the Cover Art on the web site and get the title right too: "Shades of Grey."

    3 out of 5 stars Ain't it funky now.......2004-10-27

This album is touted as the type of mix you might hear if you went to club where DJ Greyboy was spinning at.

So this is not his original compositions and songs. There are a few remixes on here of songs off Soul Mosaic which are different enough from the album versions that they're interesting.

The majority of the songs are really funky hard-to-find obscure songs by artists that you've never heard of. Nonetheless, the man has a good ear for music.

Most songs are funky and probably from the 60's or 70's. It's similar to James Brown and his Funky People.

So if you're into different hard-to-find groove based funky music, I'd pick it up. It's already got Greyboy's approval.

But if you're really into the newer hip hop / beats type of music, I'd steer clear, especially given the high retail price.
