3 out of 5 stars Hopeful Theory Proven Wrong.......2007-07-29

After listening to Renaissance: Desire mixed by Dave Seaman and being so impressed by it, I thought that perhaps Renaissance was the place to look for more great sets by Dave Seaman. His Global Underground albums don't give the listener a fraction of what this guy CAN really mix up (GU022:Melbourne does slightly). With GU, Seaman followed the same format that a lot of his world-class DJ colleagues did by compiling more hard progressive trace albums that sound like most of the others.

Renaissance: Desire is much different. Desire and his contribution to the Back to Mine series, show off a much more talented DJ that lurks beneath the ability to sell any album with his name on the cover.

So, I picked up Renaissance: Awakening to see if my theory might have some validity. Unfortunately not. Despite being just over a year junior to Renaissance: Desire, this album sounds much older. Ladened with outdated-sounding trance with a lot of anthem tracks spanning across both discs. This album sounds like a recipe pulled from Paul Oakenfold's trance repetoire.

Disc 1 is slightly better than disc 2. Mostly for the set's brief interuption by a couple of tribal trance tracks that break up the beat nicely.

Disc 2 is uninspiring. Nice inclusion of Satoshi Tomiie's "Up in Flames" but this is completly negated by BT's "Dreaming" (or anything by BT for that matter).

Disc 1 gets 3/5 stars, and disc 2, 2/5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Wake Up!.......2007-01-13

This Renaissance release grooves. It flows. It moves you. Everything, from the transitions, to the mixing techniques, the EQ and the vocals, the fades and the change of styles, is placed perfectly. I really cannot imagine better places for any of the aforementioned attributes of this CD than where they already are. Albums like this particular one encompass pretty much each and every reason why Dave Seaman is becoming one of my most respected and spun artists out of a dauntingly long list of others.

Pity it is out of print. Most classics become so, it seems.

This double-disc set encompasses such a myriad of styles that it is overwhelming and pleasurably enveloping simultaneously. The vocals on 'Save Me', 'Dreaming' and 'Up In Flames' are fantastic, they really are - and the set has a 'worldly groove' vibe to it, with some tracks which sounding as if they'd arisen from India, Africa & Spain. But these influences do not dominate the album, making it a mishmash of multicultural trance tunes - they merely add dashes of flavor to the mix, making it even more incredibly unique than it already is based on its own technical achievements.

The real magic lies within the track selection. The way each song flows and actively keep the listener involved, participating in this wonderful journey... I absolutely guarantee there is no point where I found myself wanting to skip ahead even ten seconds. Seamless, catchy, cheeseless, distinctive & dignified progressive trance music - TWO WHOLE DISCS WORTH -is what the buyer will "Awaken" to.

And it is truly an Awakening amongst the veritable ocean of anthemic dance music we find ourselves struggling to breathe amongst today.
As another reviewer stated, having heard this mix before I would not hesitate to pay up to one hundred dollars for the two CDs. It is just *that* rare that one finds a pair of cds that can be listened to sequentially, and then suddenly nothing else seems desirable... the two need to be replayed! And replayed, and replayed, and replayed....

5 out of 5 stars With his Back To Mine, the DEFINITIVE Seaman album.......2004-02-10

Every now and again, a DJ will come out with a mix that condenses everything he/she stands for sonically. Digweed had GU014:Hong Kong & Disc 2 of Communicate, Sasha had GU013:Ibiza. Renaissance:Awakening is Dave Seaman's magnum opus, the perfect high-energy foil to his other, down-tempo masterpiece in the Back To Mine series.

Disc 1, unusually, crackles and vibrates with an almost tribal vibe, irrespective of the fact that it is high-bpm fare. Beginning with "Circulation Ltd", Seaman moves quickly through bass-heavy, brooding rhythms, before exploring now-classic tracks like the Humate mix of Schiller's "Ruhe", Killahurtz' "West on 27th" and Silvio Ecomo's "Standing". The ambient atmosphere gets even edgier when he follows "Save Me" with "Goldrush" and then proceeds to deliver an object lesson in hands-on, Protools-free mixing when he effortlessly drops Kundalini Rising's "Kayomani" (those of you who have heard the version on Gatecrasher's GSS release will be shocked at how the same track pushes a totally different vibe). Perfect closer to the disc - "Love Has Come Again".

But if you thought Disc 1 was good, Disc 2 takes things to a totally different altitude. The beat-free, spacey synths of Voyager's "Motion" give way to the insistent, subliminal "Ocean Wave" by Clearwater. Mixing technique reaches a fever-pitch of perfection when Seaman lets the vocals of Satoshi Tomiie's legendary "Up in Flames" ride all over the backdrop provided by The Shaker's "Melon Kolic". Gloat's "Skidaddle" employs a hard, dense bassline interspersed with minimal, harsh synths to create the best track on the disc. By the time Seaman closes out with the floating, vocal trip that is BT's "Dreaming", you've already got your money's worth twice over.

Why is it a classic? - Endless replayability, with sound that doesn't seem dated even today. No drop in quality between discs. Superhuman mixing showcased on both discs. Tracklist that could well double as a Top Trance Tracks of the Past Decade compilation. If you're a Seaman fan (as I am), you probably need no reasons - this album appeals to you on levels totally beyond the rational or the logical.

Disc 1 : 5 stars. 'Nuff said.
Disc 2 : Off the chart. In my Top 5 mixes of all time.
Overall : Buy it. Please. If by some amazing combination of circumstances you don't like it, you'll still end up selling it to a fan years later for a lot more than its original worth, so at least give it a chance. You won't regret it... Scout's Honor.

5 out of 5 stars By far the best trance CD to date........2003-12-14

I own all of the global underground and renaissance CDs and this is by far the best. I also own all of oakenfolds work. Dave Seaman is the only DJ who plays in the same ballpark as Oakie and with this mix he hit a home run.

The songs are incredibly catchy while being trippy. Both CDs are a continuous flow from begining to end, NO JOKE: Buy it if you can before it's too late. Had I not bought it some time ago, I wouldn't hesitate to pay $100 for it. Seriously if you aren't ready to invest, find a copy from a friend or whatever and listen to it, if you truely love trance than you will understand how I feel about this CD and buy it....

3 out of 5 stars not feelin' this release..........2003-03-09

This is the weakest of Dave's albums. This album is predictable and boring. Melodic trance is getting old. Disc 1 has a few good tunes however - Standing, 27th Street, etc. All in all, not worth the hefty price tag. I made that mistake. Dave Seaman shines on GU: Cape Town and Desire. Check those 1st along with the excellent Back to Mine. This advice is coming from a seasoned electronica listener. It's up to you. Some recent releases to peep: DFuse - People, Sasha - Airdrawndagger, Pappa - Resolution, anything by Bukem. Late!

5 out of 5 stars best of dave seaman.......2001-03-02

this compilation is with out a doubt his best. From the start track one sets up this compilation with a mellow but beautiful sounding track. this album is ful of building songs(songs that start up slowly then pick up faster) which is patented dave seaman style, after track 5 this cd really starts to pick up the pace then he ends this cd perfectly with human movements- love has come again(the best version ive heard of this track. Cd2 is the best out of the two which is hard to explain because cd1 is incredible. cd2 starts off with a melodic track with no bass but a beautiful track then the rest of the tracks just take you for a wonderful ride through thumping beats and unpredictable beats(where there will be a certain phat beat that will out of nowhere change into an even phater beat)he then ends it perfectly with bt's dreaming. his mixes are perfect, track selections perfect,I own all his gu's he is my favorite dj trust me this is by far his best album. If your a new listener to dave seaman he has a very simular style to sasha.Sasha even uses some of the tracks on this album on his album "Communicate". If you are a true trance fan buy this album if you are new to the scene i do not recommend buying this album yet, i recommend albums like the "Euphoria compilations",the Gatecrashers(black, wet, disco tech)and trance nations(ministry of sound).I am a huge trance fan i listen to so many different styles but i must say dave seaman is truly the best!! I over read the other reviews i agree with most except the first he obviously is new to the trance scene to give this album 2stars.Well anyway trust me its a great album.ENJOY IT!!!

2 out of 5 stars Nothing special.......2001-02-26

After listening to Dave Seaman's GU releases (012:Buenos Aires and 016:Capetown) I thought that I had found a new favorite DJ. Reading great reviews about this release, I decided to pick it up. With only a few decent track selections, this album barely stands up in the face of his other awesome mixes.

This album really lacks anything to keep the listeners interest. There are very few songs with a melody of any sort, because most of the music on here is for dancing only, which is great if these CD's are going to played on the dancefloor, but not if they're going to be played more than once in my CD-Player. Of the 24 songs, only Matt Jacksons' "Circulation" and Stoneproofs' "She Does" are worth listening to again. If you love to dance in your living room, then this album is totally for you.

Besides a poor selection of music, this album does feature Seaman's terrific mixing skills, which is always apparent with anything him. Even with the worst of tracks, it's hard to tell that you're moving into a new song.

I was hoping for another Capetown or Buenos Aires, but I got something especially boring and uninpiring. If you're looking for more of Seaman, don't look here -- at least not first :: .

4 out of 5 stars Vintage Seaman.......2001-02-20

This is, in my opinion, Dave Seaman's best work to date. He has always amazed me by the freshness and originality of his track selection like on Renaissance America and GU Buenos Aires, but this CD demonstrates this ability the best. But they are also expertly mixed by Seaman into one very emotionally moving set. And this is precisely why I sometimes favor Seaman over the likes of Sasha and Digweed or Tenaglia. Although I do think S+D are the best DJ's in the world right now in trance and progressive house, respectively, I do concede that their murky, dark tunes do sometimes grow a little distasteful (but not much). When this happens, Seaman's emotionally uplifting sets are like a breath of fresh air. He drags you into the depths of house hell with one track and then lifts you into trance bliss with a track like Meeker's "Save Me" (fittingly placed AND titled). My only problem with this mix is that, like his other mixes, there are too many vocals in tracks big trance fans have heard too many times, which makes me worry about whether Seaman is going to start spinning like Oakenfold. Although both these DJ's continue to AMAZE me with the freshness, emotion, and mixing of their sets, they lack the originality of remixes and unreleased tracks that other DJ's have. Nevertheless, Awakening is definitely worth the money (yeah, I know it is pretty expensive) and then some. While I have knocked it a little here, which I always do in my reviews of less than 5 stars, it still ranks up there with GU:SF, Hong Kong, Amsterdam and Northern Exposure Expeditions as my favorites.

This is nice adult alternative music. Too bad they won't play music like this on the radio for people to hear.EVERY ROAD LEAD HOME is the best song on here. GREAT WIND is another nice song. "South Africa" I don't care for because of the backup singing. Amanda Leigh was formerly Amanda Blue and lead singer of the early 1980s pop-punk-rock band Spider and if I remember a comment I heard on the radio from 1980, Spider was from South Africa but came to the US.

Amanda Leigh leaves country singer Winnona(sp?)in the dust.

4 out of 5 stars Living Up To It's Title.......2000-06-06

Just another work of excellence by Dave Seaman himself. You are able to identify his selection and styles in the dance industry with most of his mixed albums. By being a regular DJ at Renaissance and a pioneer in the circuit,he is able to capture the vibe of the club and make an adaption out of it into this compilation.

Most of the track titles in this album are not commercially glorified yet but every track serves it's essential purposes. Not too hard and yet,not that soft either. The tracks are so well arranged that it gradually builds up on it's own (without skipping the tracks, that is!) and that it'll take you on a dark and progressive trance ride throughout the album. It'll definitely be a collector's item.

My top tunes in the entire compilation would be the Silvio Ecomo - 'Standing' and the superb mixture between The Shaker - 'Melon Kolic' into the Satoshi Tomiie - 'Up In Flames'(Acapella version). Simply awesome.

3 out of 5 stars Another addition to an excellent collection..........2000-05-26

Dave Seaman is probably the hottest DJ in the world right now (I know I'll get shouted down for this comment). This collection shows a move to a more mellow selection of tunes. It takes a few listens but once you get there you'll find that everything hangs together very nicely. Favourite track: Meeker - Save Me (For anyone who's ever been in a bad relationship)
