Tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm's second album, The Navigator, follows up on his first effort, Sorry, No Decaf and further marks him as an exceptionally mature-sounding young player with a broad stylistic reach. Frahm's experience as a sideman--with drummer Matt Wilson and pianist David Berkman (heard to excellent effect here) and others--shows in his chameleon-like ability to slide effortlessly between styles, from the outward-bound freedom of Berkman's "Ants" to Frahm's ode to Wayne Shorter, "Fort Wayne," to the meditative and bluesy "Hymn for Don Cherry." It's a talent that marks Frahm more as a greater interpretive stylist than as a composer, and his ability to shape-shift so easily sometimes makes The Navigator seem like an exercise in variety for its own sake. Still, there are moments here, like Frahm's beautiful take on "My One and Only Love" and his interestingly abstract soloing on his own "Shards," where his own conception shines through to great effect. With the rock-solid rhythm team of bassist Scott Colley and drummer Billy Drummond lighting a fire beneath him, Frahm turns The Navigator into a calling card for greater acclaim. --Ezra Gale

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars passionate young master with soulful expression.......2005-03-24

I haven't stopped listening to this album since I bought it last summer. It has been a real treat to listen to. I couldn't help but notice several influences in his playing. Frahm's playing echoes Chris Potter, Jimmy Greene, Mark Turner, Michael Brecker, and of course greats like Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane etc. I think what really blows me away is his tone--its very sexy, but he has his own way of weaving lines and textures so that every note is a pleasure to hear. You can't go wrong with a group of all-star musicians like this either: David Berkman-piano, Scott Colley (Chris Potter's regular Bassist), and Billy Drummond-drums. Each of the tunes is a unique interpretation of Joel's sound, which is very personal and humble, but says a great deal. He is one of the next great masters.

4 out of 5 stars Frahm's Multi-styled Talent Showcased Exquisitely.......2001-02-11

The first LP I ever owned (at least two years before I had a turntable to play it) was a gift from my jazz saxophone-playing uncle. "Great Jazz Reeds" featured an array of sax and clarinet talent considered among the jazz world's best in the late 1950s. I was reminded of that old 12-inch vinyl album when playing and replaying Joel Frahm's exceptional new CD, "The Navigator" (Palmetto Records, 2000).

An even brighter, more polished recording than his remarkable debut CD, "Sorry, No Decaf," the new disk establishes Frahm as among the best of America's newest generation of talented tenor saxophonists. While the jazz public may better know Joshua Redman, Branford Marsalis, Don Braden, or David Sanchez, Frahm is certainly their equal.

What is perhaps most astonishing about this talent (beyond the fact that he is but 31 years old) is his range of sound, reflecting a great diversity of direction the tenor saxophone has traveled in some 80 years of jazz history. While it may be fair to suggest that young Frahm has not yet found a singularly distinctive voice, one would need to search far to find another virtuoso performance by a saxophonist of any age that touches so eloquently on so many bases. On The Navigator's ten tracks we are treated to a Frahm whose range recalls vividly the sensitivity of Lester Young, the technical chops of John Coltrane, the lyricism of Stan Getz, the mystical vapors of Charles Lloyd, even the deep soulful cry of Ben Webster.

Frahm does it all, oddly without any seeming attempt to impersonate. Rather, clearly aware of the instrument's history, Frahm simply allows the flavors of the best of the past to arise naturally and to permeate his solos.

The Navigator swings (the CD's title track, composed by the saxophonist), enchants ("Sister Julie"), and soars {"Ants"). The exciting "The Shoko Dance" is a musical essay, layered with sophisticated expression. "My One and Only Love" is as beautifully captivating as any solo tenor recording since the young Lloyd first found his voice with the old Chico Hamilton quintet.

Frahm, known throughout the northeast for his work in the Matt Wilson band (and for backup work to the talented young jazz vocalist, Jane Monheit), is well served here with a trio of colleagues: David Berkman on piano, Scott Colley on bass, and a driving drummer, Billy Drummond.

The Navigator is a breakthrough recording by one of the great emerging talents in jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Funker Vogt - Navigator cd.......2006-03-09

I have listened to many of their songs on a site called www.pandora.com

I first heard of Funker Vogt on myspace.com on a friends page and I heard the song Gunman. Ever since I have loved Funker Vogt. Of of this cd I have heard Friendly Fire(am listening to it play right now on pandora.com), Killing Ground, and No Tomorrow. This is a truely amazing group.

Funker Vogt has awsome songs that totally are worth listening to. I dont own this cd yet but I hope to soon and I would recommend this cd to anyone who loves this genre of music!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing!.......2005-09-17

I just got my copy yesterday (from Metropolis), and I simply won't remove it from my CD player. Navigator was entirely catchy from the first listen, and just keeps getting better each time I play it. Navigator is an excellent follow-up to their last release, Survivor, but is in no way a carbon copy and is just as strong of an album in its own right.

Within Navigator you'll find Funker Vogt's trademark super-epic arpeggiated synth lines overlaid with war ridden lyrics. They've pulled out a vocoder for this album and do some clever and not overdone pitch shaping with the lead singer's vocals. The music is beautiful and huge, just what you've come to expect from this band based on their last few albums.

This album might not feel as dark as previous releases, but I find it haunting in all the right ways. Funker Vogt is menacing, and this album gives me goose bumps. If you liked Survivor, then you'll love Navigator.

5 out of 5 stars Adios Ayer...........2001-10-16

All started when I first saw the MV of Adios Ayer on TV.... I loved it and cried when I heard the lyrics as I've just broken up with my lover and his image still appears in my mind every time I play adios ayer now. BTW, the whole album is fantastic and it is a huge improvement from Padilla's debut album. I'm looking forward to the third.

4 out of 5 stars The don of downtempo.......2001-09-23

In these trying times a cd like this is a very valuable asset. Jose has once again achieved a high standard of downtempo tunes. If you love beautiful strings and intricate little melodies moving in and out you will love this. The sound of summer in the evening under a palm tree with your sweetheart. Also check Zero 7 for more great stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2001-08-27

If you liked Cafe del Mar volumes 1 to 5, then you are going to like this record too. Plain and simple, this is classic Jose Padilla. If you liked him before, get this recording also.

5 out of 5 stars Reminds me of the sea.........2004-02-09

This is a wonderful lounge/chill out album that i never get tired of and it only gets better everytime i play it. Navigator might belong to the same genre of music, but French house and oriental lounge this album is not, so don't expect something like Hotel Costes or even Buddha Bar. Get this album if you can't get enough of the first 6 Cafe Del Mar albums, and it's a definite must have if you love being reminded of pristine beaches and breathtaking sunsets!

3 out of 5 stars Boring.......2002-12-25

This CD falls into the category of "Wish I hadn't bought it, but won't throw it away." There are no memorable songs on here, some nice chill music, some super bland trancy background music, and a couple of horribly insipid love songs that I can't bear listnening to, one of which reminds me of Gloria Estefan. Except for the love songs, it's all easy to listen to. There are probably people who like the love songs (somebody's buying Gloria Estfan). Obviously some other people love this CD. It's OK, but I can't recommend it. Too bland and uninspired and there's better to be had. I've just bought it and I'm already pulling tracks off onto mixed CD's because this CD doesn't hold my interest, even on the first listen.

Craig Armstrong, Charles Webster, The Dining Rooms, Boozoo Bajou, Hotel Costes, Buddha Bar, to name a few, are all better.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CDs - ever.......2002-10-03

If you want to relax, enjoy music, and dream of beautiful sunsets in the Mediterranean, you should buy this CD. It's as least as good as the Cafe del Mar series, and has some very emotional tracks.

If you think this is "boring", you're apparently deaf. Every single one of the songs is memorable, especially the new versions of "Who do you love" and "Adios Ayer" feat. Seal. THIS IS A MUST BUY FOR EVERYONE WHO ENJOYS MUSIC!

5 out of 5 stars Haunting.......2002-05-20

Some of the songs on this album seem dopey in isolation, but I find myself jonesing for it if I don't listen to it at least once a week. For me, that's unusual, so I think it's special.

5 out of 5 stars Take a trip and never leave your chair.......2002-04-07

I love the way music has a way of finding you when you least expect it. That's what happened when I first heard this album. Jose Padilla's music found me while I was drifting and dreaming around my favorite independent bookstore becoming more intoxicated by the trance inducing rhythms and sounds coming from the speakers than looking at books...it was Jose Padilla and the name of the cd was "Navigator". I immediately...got this album.

It is hard to classify this kind of music and I only want to classify it so you will have some sort of idea what type of music this is. It is not exactly jazz, but it is the closest thing I have to a jazz album. I would describe as music where jazz, hip hop, atmospheric, kind of psychedellic with mellow medium tempo Latin rhythms all meet. Not so slow they bore you and put you to sleep, yet not so fast you feel like you are speeding. The album moves along at more of a conversational pace.

I think it's best enjoyed to just sit back relax and let the mind altering music take you where it wants, and you're just along for the ride. Allow yourself to be hypnotized by this music and let it take you on a trip. The first few songs kinda get you in the mood while you begin to relax your mind and you start to leave the ground. By the time "Dynamic Earth" comes along, you will feel you are sailing high above the clouds enjoying the atmosphere. After the last song is played, you will feel you have landed, fresh, energetic and inspired. It will seem like you have been in a dream while awake. Whether it was your dream or somebody elses dream, you will know that you were there and in the middle of it.

As of right now, this is my 4th review on Amazon. I enjoy writing them if I am inspired by and believe in what I am reviewing. It takes alot for something to capture my attention. It has to stand out from the rest and not be like anything else. It has to be fresh, original and powerful. So powerful that I can feel the passion of the artist. Jose Padilla's "Navigator" does all of that for me...I highly reccommend this album. I don't think you will be disappointed or feel you have wasted your money. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I know I was.

I love this album. Simple and ecclectic, Stephen Ashbrook is one of the most overlooked artists of our time. I love all his albums and he's even better in concert!

    5 out of 5 stars I love my Ashbrook!!.......2001-06-10

Stephen Ashbrook touches listeners with his gentle, yet powerfully seductive compositions.

All I had to do was put his CD into the stereo, and my girlfriend really liked it! Much better than "Nicki Lamb Blues."

Ashbrook is taking his own path. His music is not some teeny bopper Lip Sync routine. Get ready for heart and soul lyrics.

    5 out of 5 stars Finally a Great Americana / Rock Album.......2001-04-13

This is the best record since Blood on the Tracks!!! A simple record, Ashbrook is accompanied only by his acoustic guitar. This is the next David Gray, but his vocals will carry him a lot further. This is the top CD in my collection!!!

So Simple, Ashbrook is accompanied only by his acoustic guitar. This artist is the next David Grey, but with a voice that will carry him a lot further! This record is at the top of my collection.

    Album Description

Explore your dreams, by stretching the boundaries of your imagination. When you sleep, your brain waves go through a pattern of certain changes, classified as stages. These stages are know as the Sleep Cycle. A very low and slow frequency is sent from the front portion of the brain when you are in your deepest sleep or rest. Dreaming or desynchronized sleep is called Emergence. All mammals and birds have brain waves that show Emergence and the Sleep Cycle. During this cycle of rest, powers of the body are restored.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Minimal ambient for maximum mood.......2004-11-26

Brannan Lane is less famous than Robert Rich and Steve Roach, but his best stuff is as good as either of these luminaries. On this CD he is at his most minimal and moody. Lane bills this CD as music to sleep to, and I suspect it would be good for that, provided you like to nod off with dark, pensive thoughts in your head. The mood is decidedly brooding and melancholic, and this music would be a great while reading a scary novel, or lying in a dark room contemplating your mortality.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely intoxicating!.......2002-01-07

"The music is absolutely intoxicating! The gentle pastoral ambience provokes brain wave activity. Deep and careful listeners will feel the neurotransmitters shooting across the synapses as the organic minimalism surrounds them."

    5 out of 5 stars A Sonic Teddy Bear.......2001-08-03

Brannan Lane from Tennessee, an unlikely wellspring for ambient music, has created quite an understated gem. The music, no suprise, mirrors the vagaries of the human sleep cycle. This is more than functional music, however; despite the fact that the recording was made "softer and more warm sounding" than Brannan's previous projects, it is just as delightful in the foreground as it is when serving as a sonic teddy bear. With this release, Brannan Lane has started to get the recognition he deserves on ambient music newsletters and forums. Sweet dreams!

2 out of 5 stars Buy the Boxset Instead.......2006-01-01

The concert on this cd (June 27, 1976 Berlin Philharmonie) can be found unaltered along with a bunch of other excellent, untampered concerts on the Tangerine Dream Bootleg Box Set Volume 1. This is an official release and sounds better than actual bootlegs or the mess that is Soundmill Navigator. Cheesy, obviously digital overdubs turn this cd into a wreck. The actual concert during the brief periods where you can hear it over the "Tangentization" is a classic. 1976 was a transitory year live for Tangerine Dream. They were beginning to bring some element of structure to their concerts. The freeform Moog freakouts were gradually being replaced by sequencers and the guitar noodling sounds suspicously like the opening chords to Pink Floyd's "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun". However, there is plenty to like, especially with their classic line up. Its a great concert. The band was in form that night (and many others). Soundmill Navigator is just not the place to buy it.

      5 out of 5 stars a great document.......2004-03-12

I would recomend it to anyone who wants something new from the classic period of the dream. They were in fine form that night ( the acid was good I guess).

      1 out of 5 stars Whit-whit, whit-whit....(get used to that sound).......2004-02-14

What a shame! TD finally releases an old "golden age" concert, as dedicated fans have been begging for, and we end up with this. If this this is TD's effort to "beat the boots", then they have failed miserably. I've heard dozens of "unofficial" TD concert recordings where the sound quality is utterly fantastic (like "Patrolling Space Borders", which someone else recommended) - couldn't they have released one of those instead?

Starting about 2 minutes into this CD, an annoying "whit-whit" noise starts, and it continues for the next 39 minutes. I'm not an audiophile, and I don't have any especially high-end equipment, but this is unlistenable. It's unfortunate, because it seems that the group was in fine form that night, with lots of ambient synth work, and a nice turn on guitar from Edgar Froese.

I am a fan of almost every phase of TD's career, but I know that a lot of folks stopped listening in the 80s. I didn't mind when they released the Tangents boxed set with the reworked versions of many old tracks, or Froese's solo retrospective with similar reworkings. Many fans saw this tampering with the past as a slap in the face to folks who didn't care for the band's current musical direction. If you're one of those people, be prepared to be slapped again.

I'd recommend picking up Encore or Ricochet instead if you need a dose of live 70s TD.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent ambient stuff.......2003-12-07

I agree with other reviewers that this is a modern overdub of a classic live recording.
That said, I think this is what TD has been doing since it's beginning. Ricochet is an excellent recording BUT is a studio overdub (with studio tracks included) of a mix taken from TD's previous European gig, and that doesn't make Ricochet a bad recording but on the contrary it's a masterwork. Other examples of TD's overedub action being, Encore, Poland, Tangents (compilation)and the 3 dream mixes.

Soundmill Navigator does not deserve to qualify as a masterwork BUT it's an enjoyable fictional performance. Forget any expectation about listening to a historical record and you'll enjoy a kind of partially invented, or fictitious, live performance, mixing 21st century dubs with 30 year old synths.
It's very spacey, ambient, if you like, so if you enjoy a more rhythmic TD this CD might disappoint you.

1 out of 5 stars Confused? This is what's happened........2003-06-05

There seems to be much confusion about this release, let's see if I can clarify the situation.

The original concert that took place on the 27th June 1976 at the Berlin Philharmonie consisted of only one track which was 31mins 31secs in length. It's a justly famous performance and is out there in very good sound if you look for it.

This means therefore that an extra 10 mins worth of overdubs and added sounds have been added. Presumably in order to make it up to a minimum length for an official release. Anyway the result is horrible and this is a totally misguided release.

      Hope that's cleared things up.
