4 out of 5 stars Not very helpful........2006-07-22

15 years ago I found an unlabeled cassette tape while walking through the Indiana University campus. Popped it in the car stereo and was instantly hooked. Problem was, I had no idea what the name of this great band was. All I knew was that the lead singer sounded like a jacked-up Buddy Holly. Anyway, 15 years later I finally heard the Undertones on amazon and the great mystery of my life had been solved. This is not a very helpful review, but I selfishly wanted to share my story anyway.

5 out of 5 stars One of their 2 classic power pop punk git albums.......2004-12-19

Hard to believe these guys apparently came from Northern Ireland, land of the Troubles. In fact, if I got it right, during the period they were making their music, 1978 or so to 1982, the Troubles were in full swing with bombings and British soldiers and just a terrible life that the people had to live in. Then listen to this music. It's all about Chocolate and Girls as they say. No politics. Although an Irish punk told me that back in the day you were either into the UNDERTONES or STIFF LITTLE FINGERS and that each was in one general camp or the other (Protestant vs. Catholic and their respective political and geographic stances).

All I know is that the UNDERTONES captivated me from the time I first heard 'em about 1980 through, well, today. I still dig their sounds. In fact, I'm such a fan, I even like everything they did, that is, the last 2 lps where got more slick and Motowny. It's still great if you ask me mainly cuz the song writing is strong and the guitar remains a strong presence. However, it's the first two albums, this being the second one, that are the stand out classics. I can't think of a single band who does better power pop punk. It's all the guitar and song writing. Even the funny vocals somehow work.

This is one of those bands (like PERE UBU and HALF JAPANESE) that, if you don't like the vocals, forget it, cuz all the songs are drenched in them. But, if you do, welcome aboard. Very breezy stuff, suitable for radio airplay but, of course, only made it in the UK cuz the U.S. is so very rigid about what will be played on corporate radio while in England they relish their national eclectic tastes. Course, they can turn on a band in a second while in the U.S. most bands, if they can keep cranking out songs that get on the radio, the public keeps goin' with 'em, in general. This is stronger and less silly than BAY CITY ROLLERS and has none of the snarling of BILLY IDOL. They're probably in the general catagory of a singles band, they released a dozen or so of them. I never try to convince anyone to listen to a particular band or to like them. I figure, you like 'em or you don't. I love the UNDERTONES and contine to. You can also get either their Greatest Hits CD or the Singles 2xCD which really puts all their great songs on one release. Meanwhile, this CD includes 3 extra trax, proably from a single and they're good songs as well.

My only sadness is they only toured the U.S. once back in the day and I was workin' that night! but at least I sent along a dozen friends and relatives and they told me it was like goin' to a BEATLES concert, cept on a smaller scale, pure energy and pleasure and lots of happy people. They've since reformed with a new vocalist and even toured the East Coast a coupla times. Cool.

5 out of 5 stars THE UNDERTONES JUST GOT BETTER WITH EACH ALBUM.......2004-05-09

This is the second Undertones album and it is SUPERB, as all their albums are. It's way better than The Ramones because The 'Tones use loads more chords while still keeping it simple. This is like The Ramones meet The Beatles. There's not a bad song on here - every song is a JOY! Don't MISS this album!!!
It sounds as great in 2004 as it did in 1980!!! The Undertones were the most underrated overlooked band of all-time. If you discover them, you will be thrilled you did!

4 out of 5 stars It's Never too Late to Enjoy Dumb Entertainment.......2004-03-03

On their second album, The Undertones opened with what is probably one of the great self effacing songs of all time. An early criticism of the band was that they were lightweights in the shadow of punk's heavy political hitters like the Clash or the Sex Pistols. They countered with tongue planted firmly in cheek:

"So here's more songs about chocolate and girls.
It's not so easy knowing they'll be heard.
A lot less time but a lot more care,
so here's more songs about chocolate and girls."

Having taken all the starch out of their image, The Undertones then embarked on a rowdy record that pushed their envelope as writers and musicians. A year on the road (and a US tour) had sharpened them as a band, with John and Damien O'Neill becoming observant songwriters. The characters that fill the songs like "What's With Terry," "There Goes Norman" and "My Perfect Cousin" may not have been all that far removed from the debut album's "Jimmy Jimmy," but were a lot better defined. And that the songs still had the hooky charm and speed of the first record didn't hurt either.

The seeds of experimentation were just beginning to take hold as well. What was side two of the original album contained the more sophisticated song arrangements of "Wednesday Week" and "Tear Proof," finding the band toying with sonics but not yet being spoiled by them. Feargel Sharkey had become confident enough to wade into a classic cover of "Under The Boardwalk" and make it his own. Unfortunately, this maturation would sap the band's charm by the next album. To that extent, much like their debut, "Hypnotised" is a marvel of adolescent randiness and joy. If you are a lover of the pure energy of the Ramones first three platters or even the Buzzcocks, then the Undertones' first two records are must haves.

5 out of 5 stars You'll Be Hypnotised Too.......2005-06-24

My tastes in music have been very eclectic, having run the gamut in genres throughout my 25-plus years of collecting music. This LP has always been one of my favorites.

I first heard the Undertones "Hypnotised" LP shortly after it was released, having been a instant follower of the group after hearing their self-entitled debut LP. My older sister had both LPs, as she was tuned into punk by a local promoter who would bring punk bands to our area. She saw the Undertones perform locally in about 1979. I believe she told me the second floor nearly caved in from the pogo dancing at the venue.

I didn't have to ever go to a concert to get caught up in what these guys were laying down for us. It was almost like punk rock meeting bubble gum music, but there's nothing corny about it. It has a sticky sweet and humorous side to it, but the humor is full of the sarcasm you'd expect from the punk rock movement. The guitar is edgy, fast, loud and the drumming drives the beat forward like any early Clash effort. The tunes are catchy and the lead singer Feargel Sharkey's voice is utterly unique.

"Hypnotised" songs revolve around these Irish boys coming of age. It's a retrospective look back for them. I liken it to taking carousel ride at the neighborhood carnival. All the sites and smells of your youth come back to you in one dizzying moment. It's like getting hit with a bucket of teenage angst and the wonder of it all. The first six tracks on this LP are rock solid. I like "Whizz Kids," "See That Girl," and "There Goes Norman" the most, but it's tough to forget their cover version of "Under The Boardwalk" for me. "Boys Will Be Boys" encapsulates the LP's theme. "My Perfect Cousin" was an instant classic.

Best thing about this CD is that they add some bonus singles to the mix that were never released on any of their LPs. "You've Got My Number (Why Don't You Use It)" is one of my absolute favorite tunes by this band. They just threw it on the CD for good measure.

5 out of 5 stars The undertone's great mystery.......2004-04-02

I first got to the Undertones in the 80's because my 2 best friends were playing that record ad nauseam along with Siouxsie and Bauhaus. Clearly this was a mistake. The accelerating riffs the joyfulness of it all didn't fit with the age of NO FUTURE angst. Here you had those innocent and simple melodies with fuzz guitar all around. Titles you read and remember the beat right away "There goes Norman". "My perfect cousin" is the ultimate jealousy song where "everything I like he doesn't" . "Boys will be boys" and "Whats with Terry" will bring back the teenager solidarity everybody must have felt once in his life.
Who were these guys. On the cover they look young and Irish with a lobster apron on each one of them.
On the back cover the distribution data by Sire data is written in Portuguese, nothing to help me undestand where they come from.
Feagal Sharkey is supposed to be the lead singer with his falsetto voice but this is clearly a group effort where all guitars and all voices bring the drive non-stop throughout the album. A great album to drive on country roads.
Still a mistery to me why I never met someone who knows about this album.

4 out of 5 stars More Songs About Chocolate and Girls.......2003-03-25

Buy this, but only after you buy the band's first album! As the lead off track indicates, the Undertones did not stray too far from their original formula when they released their second LP. Power-pop/first wave punk with silly lyrics. A young Clash with no political agenda? Good fun all around. Standout tracks include Theres Goes Norman and My Perfect Cousin (I believe the band's highest charting single).

4 out of 5 stars More fun in teenland.......1999-03-07

Their sophomore effort is overall a fun ride, and contains some top notch moments like "Tearproof" and "Wednesday Week" -- songs that pinpoint that poignant yearning feeling of youth. And then there's the playful, self-mocking teen angst tunes like "More songs about Chocolate and Girls" and "My Perfect Cousin". It's similar to their first album, with some songwriting development. Great fun, really.

3 out of 5 stars Enchanting track, could have used a couple more remixes.......2005-03-25

Hypnotised was one of the singles that came off of Oakenfold's artist album "Bunkka", as well as Paul Oakenfold's double CD DJ album, "Great Wall." The single for Hypnotised tries to do what the album version that appears on Bunkka did not, and tries to create a catchy full loaded trance song. This ends up working for the most part, as one can tell from just listening to either the Deepsky Reaktor remix or the Kowalski remix. Of the two, the Kowalksi remix is the definte more trancy version. Oakenfold though chose to put the Deepsky version on Great Wall, which in a way just adds more value to the release, since you would have to buy this CD to hear the Kowalski version. It should be noted though that the Kowalski version of Hypnotised does appear on various other DJ comps from 2003-4, but none of them are of course official Oakenfold releases. Also, Oakenfold had the Kowalski remix used for the video for Hypnotised.

Hypnotised is a decent single, but it will of course never be enough for those who feel bitter for buying Bunkka, since it only features 5 tracks, one of which is the same version from Bunkka. Still, the trance versions of Hypnotised are addictive as well as enchanting, and should be looked into. If perhaps Oakenfold managed to gain at least one or two more friends to contribute remixes, there is a feeling that this would nave been one heck of a single.

1 out of 5 stars Perfecto should be burned for releasing this..........2003-10-10

Not that this song isn't bad. In fact, I really like the Kowalski Remix of 'Hypnotized' But the problem is, it's not on here and neither is the Deepsky Remix. All there is the Radio Edits of both those mixes which are basicaly useless to anybody who is serious about dance music. And there is the album mix which isn't much good to me but it may be good to you depending if you like that mix. So basicly this is a very mediocre relese that would be good to radio stations but that's about it.

My point here is that is fail to see the logic in releasing a single if you're going not going to release the full length remixes of the song. Otherwise you are just selling the consumers short and insulting their intellegence. And you wonder why there is a such thing as MP3's

It's too bad because I was looking forward to this relese. But untill Perfecto releses a Proper single of 'Hynotized' with full length remixes instead of this garbage. Avoid this like the plauge.

Be sure to check out the video. It's played on XRM, Powershout, and NTCast. There's some crazy footage of Oakenfold at the Great Wall... unbelievable. On a side note, I question why he chose that chick in the video. She doesn't even look Chinese (more like Filipino). Nevertheless, it really makes the video even more impressive. :) Definitely check out the song and the video.
