5 out of 5 stars Woohoo.......2005-10-07

If you look at my cd collection, you will find a spectrum of assortments, ranging from Amorphous Androgynous to Paganini. I like special talents and Dara is a special talent. This CD is probably his best besides Renegade Continuum II. Unfortunately the last one I heard of his was Further (which was also very good), so I am not up to date with what he's doing now. Hope he's still as good.

5 out of 5 stars One of DJ Dara's best.......2005-03-06

This is one of the best DnB CD's I have many of DJ Dara's CD's but I play this one over and over again. I would list my favorites but that would be every track on the CD. A definite buy for any DnB freak.

5 out of 5 stars An "A" class mix cd by Dara.......2003-08-18

Well, I'll say I bought this back in 98', a time when I was just geting into jungle and it was my first real techstep d&b disk I ever owned. I'd still say that it's one of the best store bought cd's you can get. All thogh it got overplayed at raves a lot Funktion was a great track, Terradaktil has some great bass to it, Symphonic by SS was probably my favorite, Bull Terrior, Bring the Danger, everything was good and more than half on this cd were classics of the time. It's a great and well rounded mix that does what very FEW mix cd's or evem mix tapes do - expressed a complete thought and kept a very progressive change of feel to where no record seemed to just land out of nowhere. I'd recomend this to anyone who's hooked on the 98' sound and especially anyone who has a good box of subs in the back of their ride, MA4 - Bull Terrior hits like you wouldn't believe.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best drum and bass CD out there. Period........2002-01-04

DJ Dara's clean style of mixing is perfected on this CD. It's by far the best mix I've ever heard to this day. I've had this CD since it was first released, and it is STILL the best dnb CD i've ever heard.

Track #1 starts off slowly with a hint of ambience, but then comes in hard with a rolling bassline in track #2. The energy is constant throughout the entire CD, and the songs are all top notch. I personally searched for these songs in various record stores hoping to purchase them on vinyl but I was ultimately unsuccessful. You can't find these tracks anywhere else but on this CD! .... My personal favorite song on this CD (as well as my favorite overall) is track #4, Terradaktil by Pascal and Phantasy. This is a beatiful hard-hitting jump-up/tech stepper that has my heart and head pounding whenever i listen to it. Listen to the song sample provided by Amazon.com and I guarantee that you'll like it.

I would recommend this CD to everyone, whether you are new to drum & bass or a veteran of the scene. It is a deffinately a must for any jungle collection (or any kind of electronica collection for that matter). They just don't produce CD's like this anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Dara Is The Jam!.......1999-12-24

I'm not too wild about the 1st two tracks, but that's me. From track three on, however, you're captivated. Whenever I see a CD with Dara mixing, I know it's going to be good.

    5 out of 5 stars Pure Drumming.......2006-06-19

This is an enjoyable collection of songs performed by some of the best doumbek players out the Middle East and Turkey. It's pure drumming with no melodic instrumentation so it could have a particular appeal to hand drummers. Each song has a listing of its main rhythms (e.g., Masmoudi, Karsilama, Malfouf, etc.) which allows a beginning drummer to hear and play along with some amazing solo work of blazing finger rolls, pops, and slaps. These guys are amazing drummers; always "in the pocket.".

5 out of 5 stars Middle Eastern Percussion for dancers and drummers.......2004-08-07

Egyptian, Lebanese, Syrian, and Iraqi drummers Fathi Amin, Ahmad Al Masri, Hani Samir, Amir Nabil, Magdi Mshmosh, Mhamma Johari, Haysam, Safad Sroor, Hsen Sahhar, Jamale Samia, Mahmoud Hashash, Nigm Hanafli, and Kazim Al Iraqi play these ten percussion pieces featuring the Tabla. They are beautifully and skillfully played, more upbeat than the American Tribal offering by Solace, "Rhythm of the Dance", and not quite so complex as Hossam Ramszy's "Sabla Tolo" pieces.
    Featured are:
    1. Tabla Competition (3:10) - Freestyle Finger Rolls/Malfoof
    2. I Salute the Rakasa (3:04) - Fallahi/Maqsum/Maqsum Finger Rolls

Kyaw Kyaw Naing is a master of a little known percussion instrument, pat waing. This is a set of 21 tuned drums played in Burma (the traditional name of the nation of Mynamar). While the recording will appeal to those who like Indonesian gamelan, it is decidedly different music, less ethereal and more direct, with stronger rhythms and a wide variety of instrumental additions; drums (including hauk lon bat, a set of tuned low drums), xylophones, gongs, and Burmese reed instruments. One track features some astounding interplay with a European classical piano that is thunderous, a bit unnerving at times, and thoroughly charming. Well recorded by Rick Heizman, this set is a wonderful introduction to yet another ancient musical frontier long overlooked in the West. --Louis Gibson

    4 out of 5 stars A mirror for Myanmar.......2005-01-11

This disc reflects the beauty and diversity of the country from which it comes. Myanmar, it's people and it's music are a true world treasure. They have a genuinely honest approach to the evolution of their culture, hence the almost American Jazz interplay of the piano piece. Let's hope their slow transsition into Democracy comes soon to a people who sincerely wish to be welcomed neighbors.

    4 out of 5 stars Very interesting.......2004-02-21

This is a very interesting CD. It's meditative and lively at the same time. I was surprised to hear a piano solo in the middle of it. It's a very different sound that you won't find in music from other countries. If you enjoy world music, I would suggest adding this CD to your collection.

I agree that listening to the entire CD in one sitting is a bit much, but I enjoy it and it always makes me feel good. It's not the typical 4:4 rhythms of the US/European music.

    3 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2000-08-28

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Percussive Voices is MUST HAVE CD!.......2001-06-01

Percussive Voices is an exploration of sound and texture that is ancient and primal. This is World music at its best, but also a lesson in the art of percussion.

Brian Melick is an inventive musician who seems truly inspired by his art. The CD provides generous liner notes that help you understand how each piece was created by introducing the instruments behind the music. It also serves to display his passion for the Udu drum and percussion in general. But the beauty of CD jacket is only the beginning...

Pulp Fiber begins the journey with an evocative beat begging physical movement akin to tribal dancing. The repetitive rhythms continue through the next two tracks and peak with Color of Perpetual Motion, lulling listeners into trance-like meditation. As you become one with the music, it's hard to resist toe-tapping, head-bobbing, swaying and bouncing.

The mood changes with the fourth track, Transformation, which meanders through a landscape of colorful and tranquil tones. Next, we dive into a raw latin rhythm with Skin on Skin. The excitement is fresh and inspiring.

The next track, Earthen' Groove, beautifully marries the East and West with the sound of tibetan cymbals and latin conga. Though there are a number of contenders, this has to be my favorite. Culminating in the title track, it's clear Melick is having fun with an intriguing variety of instruments. The fact is he's used everyday objects to create his instruments. Remember Stomp, anyone?

True to its title, Percussive Voices introduces the diversity of percussion while treating the listener to a rich tonal experience. It's no wonder it debuted at #23 on the New Age Voice Top 100 New Age Radio Airplay Chart. All in all, Percussive Voices is an uplifting musical adventure.

Percussive Voices is must-have CD for those who love percussion or World music, as well as anyone who wants to explore trance meditation with the aid of percussive instruments.

I can't wait for his next release!

If this cd could be compared with anything, it would be Mickey Hart's "Planet Drum." However, this is an ensemble, maintaining basically the same instrumentation throughout (unlike Hart's journey through many instruments and styles). Each 'song' is very well orchestrated, so to speak: each instrument has its part to play. The sound is dynamic and full: 3 didgeridoos, djembe, dumbek, flute, shakers, klaves, various low register drums to provide the foundation, and beautiful voice to close out a few tracks...these people have obviously done their homework. Definately one of the best albums in this hard-to-find genre. I wish they'd put out more!!!!!

I was looking for some drum music for meditation, and found this incredible CD. The aboriginal undertones and the complex drum syncopation merge to offer the listener an exquisite transcendental journey. One of the best CDs of 2000.
