Today Is Someday

About the Artist
With a voice that has been likened to a cross between Peggy Lee, Sade and Sarah Brightman, Melody originally was going to tackle the pop/jazz songbook. However, as her skills and confidence grew, she raised the bar with a juicier challenge: to take songs that people do not think of as jazz into a jazzy place. For her double CD debut, Today is Someday, Melody wraps her dreamy vocals around material by artists ranging from R. Kelly ("Your Body’s Calling") to Burt Bacharach ("Walk On By"), Al Green ("I’m Still In Love With You) to Alanis Morissette ("Your House").

Beyond the unlikely remakes, the real meat of the album lies in the haunting songs Melody composed herself such as "Lover" and "Romeovoid." Among the most affecting is "Broken." "‘Broken’ is about, and for, a school teacher, "Melody explains, "the uncle of a good friend who had just become single. He received a call from a friend at Social Services asking him to take in a baby boy who was sleeping in a drawer, crack-addicted and homeless. The man agreed to take him in for what was supposed to be a couple of weeks. After a few MONTHS went by, they called for the child and he told them, ‘Absolutely not! I'm going to adopt him.’ He adopted two more drug-addicted boys and raised all three of them alone. The oldest is 17 now. It was the most esteemed thing I'd ever heard. I thought, ‘Who has that kind of love and courage anymore?’ The poem ‘Broken’ came out of that and I turned it into a song. I wrote it for the man I call ‘Al O." It’s dedicated to those who do not forsake the less than perfect or the slightly broken."

Most amazing is the title track, "Today is Someday." "If I were into tattoos, I would put that on some part of my body," Melody reveals. "It means get up, go and do everything you really want to do right now. Life can be a series of minutes/hours/days that just slip through your fingers - or it can be a series that leads to that destination in your soul where you've always wanted to thrive. I wrote that as a rallying call for myself first. Once I had pretty much finished it, I said to myself, ‘If I ever affect a life because of this song, I will have accomplished my mission.’ I’m proud to say that two people on my creative team have credited my song with giving them the courage and spirit to explore their latent dreams."

An important component of the deluxe Today is Someday package is its extensive book. Melody is dedicating the book to her mom who, in her own way, gave her not just a name but a destiny. "I want people who listen to my music to have a sense of who I am," Melody insists "Anyone going through the pictures, mottos and songs should come away seeing the complexity of me. There are dark times to making art of any significance. The photos aren’t about me being an attractive woman. It's about me being a woman who has a deep, dark side that I'm willing not only to explore but to expose. For me, the darkness was all the years that I hadn't been singing or performing – the years I was young and had no confidence."

"They say that because I’m a grown female performer, not a ‘teeny-bopper,’ and don’t easily fit into ‘establishment’ categories, that I’m going against all odds. But I believe odds exist in the world more than they do in your soul." Melody concludes, "The catharsis for the pain was to turn the muck into something beautiful. This album is my alchemy, and the twists, turns, ups and downs really don't matter if it's all for something you love. The path is not smooth, but it's laid out for you. You've just gotta get on it!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great CD for chilling........2006-12-04

Two CDs, one with a smooth jazz theme, the other, house. I'm more of a house/chill/downtempo person, so the main reason I bought this CD was for the "PM" side, which is mainly dance/house tracks.

I work at a popular clothing store that plays a lot of house music, and when I heard this track earlier this summer, I knew I had to find out the artist. Lo and behold, "Today is Someday," by Melody Swink.

I'm normally not that hot on jazz, but the AM side (jazz) is actually pretty good, I don't mind listening to it when I feel like relaxing on the couch and curling up with a good book. It has that soothing, mellow touch, and unlike what the previous reviewer said, it sounds nothing like "Joan Rivers meets William Hung." Granted, Melody doesn't make my list of "top ten vocalists," she has a nice voice, and it works well on both the AM and PM sides.

As for the PM side, with the exception of the electronica tracks, the music has a house/dance touch that's great for driving or a house party. I would have preferred more dance/house tracks over the electronica, the electronica mixes aren't outstanding, and sound pretty trite and commonplace. But, no matter, "Time," "Let Me Be Free," and "Today is Someday" are some of the cooler mixes on this CD. "Come Rain or Shine" is a jazz/drum-n-bass mix, a perfect way to end the CD.

The lyrics aren't amazing or anything, but it's good. The packaging is also pretty sweet, it's a full-color, bound book, something you can probably stick inconspicuously in your bookshelf. Probably the best-packaged CD I've seen in a while.

If you like house or jazz, you can't go wrong with this CD. And at $15.99, the 2-CD packaging is a value.

1 out of 5 stars One star because it is not possible to rate it zero stars.......2005-10-18

Oh, my ears! Joan Rivers meets William Hung.

With all due respect to Dionne Warwick, do yourself a big favor and "Walk on By" this drivel when you come across it. You'll thank me for the money saved. After listening to this, I wish I were tone-deaf. No, that is too generous to this waste of music.

5 out of 5 stars Review for Today Is Someday.......2005-04-22

As soon as I opened the packaging I knew this cd was something different. First, the cd artbook was like none I had ever seen before. It is a beautiful hardbound book that has colorful art, pictures, and even a place to write your thoughts!

Two seperate cd disks, one entitled AM and the other entitled PM offer two different moods to listen to. The AM cd is smooth jazz and for easy listening while the PM side is upbeat dance tracks that get you up and moving.

I would highly recommend this cd to all of my friends and look forward to listening to it time and time again!

5 out of 5 stars SMOOTHJAZZ.COM REVIEW.......2005-04-17

First of all, I must comment on the stunning packaging of this unique double CD... It's probably the most beautifully presented album I've ever seen. It's not in a plastic case, but instead a slick and colorful CD-size book, professionally bound, with beautiful graphics and 40 pages of color photos of this beautiful fashion model turned vocalist, what she likes to call "word votives," and complete liner notes. As for the music, it's divided into both "AM" and "PM" discs, with the more mellow, Smooth Jazz performances on the first one; the party, dance oriented ones on the second. TODAY IS SOMEDAY features Melody's sensuous, dreamy vocal talents (her voice is like a cross between Sade and Sarah Brightman) on a varied collection of both original songs and notable covers, such as Al Green's "Still In Love With You" and Culture Club's "Time," both of which feature Ramsey Lewis on piano and even Melissa Etheridge's "Like The Way I Do." Melody has dedicated her music to those in the world still waiting to realize their dreams, and it's title says a lot about her.... Unique, courageous, driven, triumphant, and inspiring, with much to be shared with others. Relax to the Smooth Jazz CD (AM), and get excited and energized by the "Dance" CD (PM), and display the book prominently as a decorative item on a table-top in your home - It'll brighten the place up a bit! ~Scott O'Brien
