Pepper: Remixes & Rarities [EP]

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
While not exactly grabbing the same level of mainstream attention as Portishead's first album, Alpha's 1997 debut, Come from Heaven, did carve out a sizable cult following for the group on the strength of its dusky, sometimes eerie mood pieces. Released on Massive Attack's influential Melankolic label, the disc continues to cast its exquisite spell on unsuspecting electronic-music fans. Pepper, a small remix and rarities anthology, appropriately spices up the material from the debut with jagged strains of drum & bass, dub, and hip-hop. Featuring choice remixes from seminal producers like Tim Simenon and Underdog, it should provide an eye-opener for new and old converts alike. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars top trip-hop.......2005-10-01

I first heard of Alpha back in 2002 when I was listening to Triphop channel at work. Came back to my desk to hear this ridiculously seductive instrumental with lots of electronica blips and beeps and a haunting chant-like vocal. The song was Tim Simeon's remix of Sometimelater, originally found on the Come From Heaven cd and included on this Pepper Remix cd. From that moment on Alpha became my new favorite trip-hop artist. The Art of Noise & Enigma previously held that position in my book since before electronica and trip-hop. I like the other mixes on this cd as well, they beg you to buy the cds the original versions are found on and I'm glad I did. The originals are even better than the remixes, well, except for Sometimelater, in which case they are about equal because they are so different. This is a REAL remix cd, where you don't even recognize the original versions of the originals found on Come From Heaven. I recommend buying ALL of Alpha's cds (4 I think), its great music for meditation, driving, bike riding, jogging, motorcycling, bathing, thinking, working, smokin herb and yes, "gittin bizzy!" Buy Come From Heaven, Impossible Thrill and Stargazer too!! Stargazer will blow your mind.

5 out of 5 stars super-cool chill music with downtown beats.......1998-11-06

I was going to get Massive Attack's recent CD for a friend's birthday until I heard Alpha Pepper. I love them both, but thought Alpha was more "downtown" -- very chill but slightly less mellow. It's got a real three-dimensional quality; I could feel myself moving through space as I listened. Each track creates a whole world of sound where I could live for hours, or days. Surprising hallucinatory voices and sounds from nowhere abound. The album is filled with sonic revelations; these cats are the real thing. Funky, creative, sensual. LOVE IT!

Product Description

11 all new blistering remixes from the highly-anticipated Pepper Mashay and the Electro Illusion "Beauty Shop-The Remixes". The original edit was featured on MGM's release of the same name featuring Queen Latifah. The initial international response from the remixes has been intense and the CD features amazing club DJs doing their stuff with the awesome vocals of international dance-diva Pepper Mashay. Pepper has had much suucess in the past especially with her Billboard hits "Dive in the Pool" and "I got my Pride". The CD also features excellent song-writing and production of Electro Illusion, a Los Angeles-based duo of Brian Harris and Michael Wickstrom in their first appearance with Pepper Mashay. Electro Illusion is also writing Pepper's upcoming full-length CD that will be released soon.

4 out of 5 stars OH FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, HERE ARE THE MIXES:.......2006-10-16

Grrr, I am so sick and tired of having to type the track listing in for these sorry Ol' half-steppers who do not provide pictures, track listings, catalog numbers and what ever would be helpful for the customer to find what they are looking for.

How in the world am I supposed to determine if the X-Union Mix is on this cd?

If a retailer expects to make online sales they need to make sure the customers are provided with the information they need otherwise they will not be able to know and will pass.

Here are the mixes:

1. Breakbeat Mix (radio edit) 4:03
2. Ford"s Trance Commander Mix (radio edit) 4:03 (as well)
3. BREAKBEAT CLUB Mix 8:11
4. Ford's TRANCE COMMANDER Club Mix 8:09 (wow, 2 seconds short of the Breakbeat Club)
5. Johnny FX Big Splash Remix 10:58
6. X-Union Mix 10:40

Tracks 1 thru 4 were remixed by FORD. Track 5 got done over by Johnny FX. Track 6 was done by Stephan Grondon and Greg Kuca. Oops, I thought it was done by Junior Vasquez! NOW WHY IN THE HECK WON'T THESE TIMES LINE UP?

4 Stars because I had to add information.

5 out of 5 stars A flamin' Hi NRG groove.......2001-09-07

I first heard this song off somebody else's copy of the Queer as Folk soundtrack, but it was the edited version. I am therefore happy that I got the remix CD single, which has the extended versoin in all its 10-minute glory. It's written and produced by Barry Harris, who is one half of the incredible remixing duo Thunderpuss (formerly Thunderpuss 2000). This groove is pretty darn hard to resist. If this doesn't have you on the dancefloor within minutes, chances are you're comatose. "Let's-get-soakin'-wet!"
