I was a bit disappointed that Teenage Jesus and the Jerks were not included in New York Noise, but, despite their absence, the album sounded quite good. This cd's insert was packed with photos and information on the bands and No Wave.

    5 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2003-09-17

Of all the CDs in 2003, New York influenced my taste in music the most. While a bit pricey, New York Noise is a fantastic compilation of post-punk and early 80s tunes that still sound rockin' today. Featuring songs from Liquid Liquid, ESG, the Bloods, DNA, Theoretical Girls, and an amazing Glenn Branca song, this CD opened up a whole world of great bands I didn't realize existed. Perhaps the only downfall of this CD is the 10 minute rap song by K Rob; luckily, the other songs are catchy, creative, and hip. If you're a fan of bands like Yeah Yeah Yeahs or The Rapture and are looking to broaden your music horizons, you'll love this CD.

    Album Description

In 1982, at the suggestion of the then Bad Brains manager, the late Dave Hahn, ROIR agreed for Hahn to executive produce and curate a compilation of the hottest young bands from the thriving NYC "thrash" scene. This compliation has become the most definitive thrash statement ever assembled and is today recognized as the "hallmark" for all thrash compliations. The original cassette released on CD with two bonus tracks. Twenty-four songs by twelve hardcore bands!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars thorough reminisence (which is good, I hope).......2007-01-01

I had this collection back in the day of "cassette only" ROIR releases, and it was my introduction to bands like Bad Brains and Adrenaline O.D., who have the best songs on this mix, as far as I am concerned. This collection also chronicles the earliest phase of the Beastie Boys (definitely, definitely pre-rap).

But aside from introducing some great names in punk rock, this collection also introduced me to the true insanity of punk. I was a beach-combing teenager on the Jersey shore, where you were an out-and-out freak if you didn't think that the Rolling Stones were the world's greatest rock 'n' roll band (and I didn't). I had dabbled a little in some Misfits, some Black Flag (I had played out the soundtrack to _Desperate Teenage Lovedolls_ to death on my turntable--why hasn't THAT one been rereleased too?), some Suicidal, and felt that I had gotten just a glimpse of what was out there. More importantly, I felt that others were privy to what the Jersey shore kept me alienated from. Odd to say, but the stuff I'd listened to so far seemed almost acceptable--my MOM even bopped along to some Misfits riffs.

I don't know how I had gotten a hold of this release from ROIR, or how I even got a ROIR catalog, but I did, and this was one of my first purchases with my paper-route money.

    And wow...

Right from the start, The Mad kick in with "I Hate Music," which splits its verses with screeching noise and saxophones (would love to say that it was Zorn bleating his alto there, but no). All the way through False Prophets screeching, "I am the Taxidermist," this collection offered me what I had only previously subconsciously wanted--music that my mom couldn't bop to, music that others would sneer at when I walked along the street with my boom box cranked up. I would take this collection to the beach with me, and while I sunbathed, a halo of empty sand formed around me. (It probably didn't help that Adrenaline O.D.'s "Paul's Not Home" set my head to epileptic tapping.) I had to buy this release four different times, mainly because people would steal it from me. I'd like to think that I was spreading some punk virus in my sleepy shore town, but I really think that some Zep-head would pull it out of the tape deck and chucked it, insulted that there could be some non-Page-influenced sounds in the world.

This disc maintains everything I liked about my early discoveries of punk--poor sound quality, pure energy. Music that would disappear if you pushed your Dolby noise reduction button. I mentioned Adrenaline O.D. and Bad Brains before, but you'll also find amazing stuff by False Prophets, Undead, Even Worse (whose "Emptying the Madhouse" is also one of the best tracks on this collection), and The Mad.

So get this disc, and then get the soundtrack to _Desperate Teenage Lovedolls_ (don't worry, I haven't seen the movie either), then the soundtrack to _Return of the Living Dead_ (AND watch the movie--punk chicks stripping in graveyards!) and then play them all with your ear up against the speaker before retiring to watch _Urgh! A Music War_ or _Repo Man_. Then you'll know what the life of a shut-in punk in hostile territory felt like.

5 out of 5 stars New York Thrash! (not trash).......2002-01-25

I gave this collection a 5 star. This is some old stuff but this is the way it was in the early 80's.Some of the recordings are just a little fuzzy but thses bands didn't have a ton of cash to pay for the high cost of recording in those days. Bands like the Bad Brains,Kraut,The Beastie Boys(no rap here!),The False Prophets, which believe it or not is still around, and Much more keep this album alive.Good punk and definitely a collectors item for all you punksters.

4 out of 5 stars Worthy of Jay Leno's collection........1999-01-17

This is a wonderful collection of New York bands that played hardcore punk in the early 1980s. It's akin to the California stuff that was going on - Black Flag and Circle Jerks, for instance - but it's darker.

It seems the world remembers the New York hardcore scene as the totalitarian dictators of rock and roll, all music utterly fulfilling punk's ethos of hard, fast noise. But if you've heard that, you may be surprised to hear how much character these bands have. Its quality isn't terribly consistent (the BeastieBoys' two entries aren't exactly stellar), but the majority really shreds. I like Even Worse a lot, and Kraut is a monster. It's too bad they didn't do much more.

The compilation includes two alternate versions of songs from Bad Brains' self-titled ROIR release. They're not as good. Get their regular album.

        Album Description

Alan Licht wears many hats. Over the years, he's been a curator of music as well as a tireless performer. And he's as well-known an author as he is a musician. It's one thing to have eclectic tastes; it's another to make a practice of them. While Licht's earlier records have seamlessly melded his improvisational guitar playing with extended plundered sounds, A New York Minute takes things a few steps further. Instead of fusing the many sides of Licht into one monolithic mega-mix, this disc separates them into discreet compositions. There's a lot more at stake here: the guitar pieces are showcased as guitar pieces and the plundered works are just that. The conceptual tendencies in Licht no longer hide behind his talent as a guitarist; likewise, the guitar pieces are no longer propped on hooky concepts that take our attention away from his fretwork. The good news is that both work: Licht is as strong a conceptual artist as he is a composer. (Kenneth Goldsmith, liner note writer)

A New York Minute lasts 2 CDs long: the title track consists of compiled, multi-tracked weather-reports from everyday in January 2001 in the city. Well, there we got our addictive quality of a repetition of the same but not quite the same. In the differences, those slots and gaps we fill in our desire, in that mood between active and passive in a sort of state of weakness lies sensuality, fluidity, moments of lust whatever. There is nothing we can do about the weather. But it is the most basic piece of information everybody takes in and processes all the time. And why not transformation in a minute or so, becoming part of it all. "Remington Khan" the longest track of all, recorded live, functions as a purely musical companion to "A New York Minute". It keeps going and going goes on and on till you feel the boundaries of consciousness, pushing you forward, softly. Restrained, full of weird little moments, feelings, small sound patterns, that build up. Somewhere in there a kind of singing. An odd kind of expression of a collective voice. A perfect deep deadpan moment. "14 Second Fifth," the other live track, is a loop that lasts 14 seconds, of a perfect fifth (pitch internal). "Another Sky" is pure calm, balm, yet within the realm of the unpredictable, causing a heightened attentiveness in the listener. Patterns reversing patterns, very subtle shifts and balances, made out of multi-tracked chord organ (one of those portable organs with an electric motor). Becoming organ. It ends on a very light note, but will resonate for a while. (Jutta Koether, liner note writer)

Comparing Dom Minasi to Jim Hall or John McLaughlin is laughable. That is not to dismiss him but rather to distinguish his interesting interpretations from genuine masters of the instrument. Enjoy him but A-B this recording to John Abercrombie or Pat Metheny in their more avant garde outings in order to hear the difference between a player and a pretender.

With cover art and typography reminiscent of Dave "Fuze" Fiuczynsky's great disc, Jazz Punk, you get a vague feel of the general direction of this altogether astounding recording. Indeed, the Fuze might be the closest analog to Dom Minasi (with echoes of Nguyen Le, Tisziji Muñez, Shawn Lane, John McLaughlan, and Jim Hall [!]), but there's really no one much like him, at least that I've ever heard. He's got the fleetness of McLaughlan in his prime, the delicacy and cool fluidity of Jim Hall, the monster technique of Shawn Lane and Tisziji Muñez, the wild conceptual power of Nguyen Le, and the totally gonzo approach of the Fuze. Add the adventurous rhythm team of Ken Filliano (acoustic bass, and one of the most talented arco players alive) and Jackson Krall (drums, a hugely under-regarded player) and you've got maybe the most incredible jazz guitar trio discs ever recorded.

Talk about deconstruction! Some of the most famous and most recorded jazz standards ("Autumn Leaves," "All Blues," "On Green Dolphin Street," and "Well You Needn't") come out sounding like something from Jupiter. Something from Jupiter you'd actually like to hear. But nothing like you've ever heard before. Somehow, no matter how far out he goes--and let me tell you, sometimes it's a question as to whether or not he's even in the same solar system or maybe even the same universe--it all makes a weird kind of sense. The strange thing is he achieves this all with an entirely classic solid-body guitar jazz tone. No strange distortions, effects, or pedals; just jaw-dropping technique. True, he plays an awful lot of notes. But I'm not sure I'd want any of them eliminated.

The truth of the matter is that Dom Minasi plays more guitar than anyone in the history of the instrument. And, amazingly, despite his extreme virtuosity, there's always so much sheer musicality present, so much pure creativity, that he and his almost equally incredible bandmates never lapse into mere cleverness or virtuosity for its own sake.

Essential for all who love jazz guitar and for anyone interested in checking out a player with out of this world chops.

          "Goin Out Again" Reviews

"A guitarist who weaves musical strings in a variety of styles from Avant-garde to Free jazz, with a hard rock mentality; Minasi and trio are truly expressive and free...Only adventurous and open minded individuals need apply."
Mark F. Turner - all about Jazz

"Dom Minasi for years out of circulation, is back out on the scene. Jazz and jazz guitar are better for it." Ted Kane - jazzreview.com

"...Dom Minasi has returned with a vengeance... `attitude' is the operative word here, as the three musicians project a high level of energy, suggestive at times of the intensity of rock rather than jazz, that continues unabated throughout the CD....Minasi extends the harmonic implication of some of jazz's most original performers...he reassures his fast-growing base of enthusiasts that this is a guitar trio like no other recording today." Don Williamson - jazzreview.com

"Midway between abstract experimentation and standards recreation, Minasi is using his plectrum like a shovel to carve out his own niche. This session should appeal to audiences who appreciate either of those genres."
          Ken Waxman - Jazz Weekly

"Dom Minasi carries the aura of a rock star. (In metaphor only; no rock here.) For a guitarist steeped in the tradition as well as the avant garde, this feature makes him special." Nils Jacobson - allaboutJazz

"...another set of adventurous trio music..." David R. Adler - All Music guide

"I'm reminded of the tradition of jazz musicians who went against the grain, who kept playing the way they played because that's what they heard, just as Van Gogh painted things the way he saw them." Marshall Bowden Jazzitude

"Minasi shines through with a fresh and personal style that touches on the past, yet delivers compelling notions for the future\" Jay Collins - Cadence
