Part three of a series of records that benefits the Special Olympics, A Very Special Christmas 3 from 1997 is as excitingly eclectic as its predecessors. Though it features the likes of R&B chart toppers and hip-hoppers Mase, Puff Daddy, and Snoop Doggy Dogg and alt-rockers No Doubt, Smashing Pumpkins, , Blues Traveler, and others, the real standout performances belong to Jonny Lang, with his bawdy, barroom version of "Santa Claus Is Back in Town" and Sting, who delivers a proper reading of that old English carol "I Saw Three Ships." The showstopper, though, is Natalie Merchant's "Children, Go Where I Send Thee" in an arrangement so rich and compelling it may top even the many five-star versions of this African-American hymn that have come before it. --Martin KellerCustomer Reviews:

Not the strongest in the series.......2005-01-14
The highlights for me are I saw three ships (Sting), Blue Christmas (Sheryl Crow), Christmas (Blues traveller), a Gallic version of Silent night (Enya), Santa Claus is back in town (Jonny Lang), Christmas is now drawing near at hand (Steve Winwood) and O holy night (Tracy Chapman). Most of the other tracks are OK but the version of Santa baby included here is definitely not my kind of music. I much prefer Madonna's version, to be found on the first volume in the series, or the original Eartha Kitt version from the fifties.
If you are a big fan of nineties pop and rock music, you may enjoy this more than I do, as my taste in pop and rock is rooted in an earlier era. Otherwise, you are likely to feel (as I do) that this is not an essential purchase. You can contribute to the Special Olympics by purchasing the first two volumes (also filled mostly with pop and rock music) or the more recent Very special acoustic Christmas (filled with country and bluegrass music), all of which I reviewed long ago.

Outta the dresser and into the rotation.......2005-04-21
Sadly, even after a number of listens recently, there are still some really bad songs on Holiday Man: "Give You My Car" and "Superfly". Nothing just seems to flow in either track, and no lyrics really jump out at you. "Girls Are The Cruelest" is a rather boring track as well, with lyrics that are hardly a step up from tragically cliché. Next there are two songs that are vastly different from anything else on the album: "The Family" and "Sexual Sandwich". If you don't like Paskowitz's voice in the other ten songs, you might love it here (or, possibly, hate it even more). I like "Sexual Sandwich" as a sexy, almost laughable closer that starts with a Marvin Gaye-like 'this one's for the ladies' quote and carries on with 'do what you do / when you do' chants. "The Family" uses the same type of voice to give thanks to everybody involved with making The Flys so infamous. Neither "Take U There", with its weird, rapping choruses, nor "Afraid", with its catawampus catchiness are really that bad. But on the other hand, they aren't that great either. Take 'em or leave 'em, I guess. "Gods Of Basketball" is a song I have come to enjoy more this time around. The heavy guitars and shouts of 'they'll be sorry when you're gone' are actually quite good; and might actually make the song a hidden gem. But the true, *timeless* gems are "Holiday Man" and "Groove Is Where You Find It". I love the way "Holiday Man" jumps right into things with 'everybody wants to be seen / everybody's eyes are all all-agleam'. If there's a track where the synthesized voice works wonders, it is certainly the title track. The way it finishes is equally as impressive. So if you've shoved this album aside, I do suggest you put it back in your CD-player for three minutes for that song alone (if nothing else). "Groove Is Where You Find It" is in the same vein as "Got You", with a slow groovyness and nostalgic buildup that doesn't exactly get you excited, but keeps you listening.
At long last, Holiday Man is still not a great CD. But it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. However, there is about a 40% chance you might actually hate most or all of the album, even if you absolutely loved "Got You (Where I Want You)". After all, before this week, "Got You" was my 41st favorite song of all-time, while at the same time this CD sat-whether gracelessly or not--in my dresser, covered by unpaid bills and basketball cards. But after a new found liking and respect for such treasures as "Holiday Man", "She's So Huge", "Groove Is Where You Find It", "The Gods Of Basketball" and even "Sexual Sandwich", I was able to find a place for The Flys (between Finger Eleven and Ben Folds) within my discriminatorily-chosen CDs in my CD tower.

Five volumes in 14 years would probably qualify these all-star benefit albums (Special Olympics) as a holiday tradition by now, even if all five have been hit-and-miss affairs. Still, the 2001 edition has a few more highlights than a quick glance at its offerings might indicate. Jon Bon Jovi tries to imitate Elvis on "Blue Christmas," and Darlene Love--surely as important a voice in the genre as Bing Crosby--falls short in her attempt to recreate her superior 1963 Phil Spector version of "White Christmas." Genuinely cool, though, are Macy Gray's jazzy "This Christmas," Eve 6's pop-metallic "Noel! Noel!," City High's hip-hop Christmas hybrid, and SR71's goofy take on Billy Squier's already goofy "Time to Say I Love You." Things get downright steamy--and Santa-sized--when John Popper meets up with B.B. King for the bluesy "Back Door Santa." --Bill HoldshipCustomer Reviews:

'Santa's A Fat Bxtch' is the bomb diggity, a humorous track but a classic. When I say classic, I mean old school "I remember those days..." classic. It serves as a good song to sing when you and your homies are bored or whatever.
'Red Christmas' is the last track and is fatter then your mother. Hehe just playing. This song is phat though, its a good track but nothing outstanding.
My words of advice are to buy this or get buyed. Foe real.

Biggie is back again--freestyling like only a dead man can on the intro to this second volume culled from the archives of NYC's Lyricist Lounge. You have to wonder why hip-hop can't let the man rest in peace? Must be something to do with the papers. Same could be said of this record's transparent attempt to keep a franchise alive and help push the Rawkus label further into mainstream consciousness. Aside from the aforementioned intro and Q-Tip's "live" outro, there's precious little evidence that the Lyricist Lounge is, in actuality, a freestyle forum with a monthly live event in New York City. The pairings of established and lesser MCs are suitably uninspired: Big Noyd and Prodigy's "The Grimy Way" and Royce Da 5'9"s "Let's Grow" even sound as if they're retreading 1980s retro-synth soundtracks. And, predictably, Mos Def (Rawkus's would-be prophet and biggest seller) is all over the record. He pairs up first with Ghostface Killah (on the previously released "Ms Fat Booty" remix), then with Pharoahe Monch and Nate Dogg (on "Oh No"), and cameos on the Gang Starr remix of Macy Gray's "I've Committed Murder." It seems that the only people that really get it are Last Emperor and RZA, whose resurrected creature-feature "He Lives" performs radical psychic surgery on this comp's rotting corpse. --Chris CampionCustomer Reviews:

When the late Tupac popularized the "thug" concept to describe his boisterous lifestyle, he couldn't have seen Trick coming. All of Miami-based Trick Daddy's albums (Thugs Are Us, Book of Thugs, www.thug.com) abuse this concept, and no one knows exactly why. On his fifth studio album, Trick flips more 'hood-centric, autobiographical rhymes on "Money & Drugs" and "Ain't No Santa," skillfully charting his rise from rags to, er, bitches. Sonically, this is Trick's most diverse album to date. While there are no clear-cut anthems like "I'm a Thug," "In da Wind" comes the closest, with progressive Atlanta rhyme-spitters Cee-Lo and Outkast's Big Boi guesting. Heck, even legendary soul singer Betty Wright's Children's Choir drops by to add some gospel flavor to "God's Been Good." While a large bulk of the collaborations add very little to the mix (Infa Red of Unda Presha and Tre+6's contributions are quite underwhelming), "Gangsta," featuring a rejuvenated Scarface, will win over those unfamiliar with Trick's hardcore street-poetry appeal. --Dalton HigginsAlbum Description

The BEST cd that was release by their label.......2004-11-26
Different kind of Christmas by Tru Life is my favorite song on the album because of the lyrical content ... I am not for the beat (I treat them 2nd), but for the lyrics so if you are looking for a BEAT review album, don't pay attention to my review ... So what I was saying was that Different kind of Christmas is really touching because of the story about the death of his brother , basically the message is that Love is universal and it's not just a word but an action so we have to give love without condition.
- The King Speech's is also a good song I really like when they say : Listen to the King speech , From the cradle to the grave to the day he was raise, everything about his life was the message that he blaze.
-The Wisemen is a really good song ... Basically they are talking like that they were the Wisemen and looking for the most shienest star ... Really good song
-Invasion Day is REALLY good lyrics wise ... The reference in Jeremiah and the Christmas tree + santa claus and the other "dude" that he is talking about is great. I congrat Flame for that nice lyrical song , really nice
- Love Does by the Phanatik is another really good song. "We hear alot about what LOVE is but we don't hear too much about what it does" ... and it continues in that patern , really nice
- Came Down by the Ambassador is great ... "When I was young I used to want alot of presents , but now that I understand christmas all I want is your presence" (So true.
- On this day by R.J is a slow song but with a nice lyrical content. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son and that on that day was the beginning of new life for me and you".
Overall great CD
The 3 Best song by the Cross Movement are FATHER FORGIVE THEM , SHOCK and GIRL NAMED WORLD if you haven't hear those songs go buy the Heaven's Mentality CD (Who's Da Man is really good also) , CHRISTOLOGY IN LAYMEN'S TERM (Ambassador Solo Album) and House of Reps.

Great Band!.......2006-10-01
I admit that I did really like the song Got You Where I Want You when I heard it on the radio but did not recognize them as the band I formerly enjoyed. After listening carefully to this song I definitely hear the old sound mixed in and enjoy it even more now that I know it is derived from the band I really missed.
I am starting to enjoy the rest of the album also but slowly I'll admit. My next favorite song is Sexual Sandwich. I am sure the rest of the album will grow on me as I listen to it more because of the talent and uniqueness of this band!
I am rating it a 5 and giving 4 of the stars because of their talent and how much I enjoy Got You Where I Want You and 1 star for how much I am anticipating enjoying the album in the future.

something i didnt expect.......2004-06-16
I do understand after reading the few reviews that this is a great Cali party beach band maybe, but just something I didn't expect after "Hey You."
There's sparks from "Girls are the Cruelest" and the disco like "The Family". Of course "Got You" is the best song by far. Other than that, I find it hard to really get what the band was trying to do in most of the songs. I will admit I do like the cd after several listens. It's something different from the usual hard rock stuff I like, and The Flys is a unique sound all in itself.
What's great about the album is I don't think the band really cares what people think about it. They cater to themselves and the fans who know what to expect form them. They seemed to have fun making this album, and even though I don't have any other The Flys albums, I might reconsider that after I start to appreciate the sound more than what I began. But damn, this is one psyched out blurred album w/ some crazy sounding songs. Oh well, just have to enjoy it when it makes its way to the cd player. For now, 3 stars for "Got You" and 1 for the cleverness of the band.

Mel Matrix and Stack Bundles are actually talented, but I think it would be better with less Jim Jones. Max B requires a particular taste, I think. If you like Dipset, you will want to buy this. If you are a fan of NY Rap in general, it can also be a worthy addition, because Stack and Matrix do the damn thing.
Jim Jones' X Mas Cash In (Rating: 5 out of 10- -2.5 stars).......2007-02-16
The bad, let me put it to you this way: this is almost "Hustler's P.O.M.E." turned into a halfassed Christmas concept. When you get to the second half, you are back to generic Jim Jones. Some people may claim that the highlight of the album is "We Fly High (Remix)" featuring T.I., Baby, Young Dro, and Diddy. But fact is that I found not one verse stood out, not even Dro's (who I believe is real funny). Then there is Jim Jones' good friend Max B. on the pointless solo song "Letter To The Game" which is not rememerable.
If you are looking to a sequel to "Hustler's P.O.M.E.", well you have one. Dip Set fans and 15 year old kids from up north will love this here. I basically can't find myself being a die hard fan of anything Dip Set related material. I personally believe that this album was the fact to see how many people would by anything that the group puts out, and how much money that Jim can collect, which really isn't a bad idea. Unless you're a die hard fan of Jim Jones, this you should avoid. Just to let you know, I basically received this album for free from a local record shop in downtown Atlanta a little bit after Christmas, incase some one is wondering why I don't like Dip Set so much but continuing to have their albums.

Favorite Tracks: A Dip Set X Mas Theme, If Everyday Was X Mas
Decent concept, poor execution. .......2007-01-18
The first five tracks, all Christmas based, are actually decent tracks from Capo Status. If Everyday Was X-Mas is my personal favorite of the five, as the best is infectious, and Rell provides a soulful chorus. The rest only moderately succeed because of the Christmas theme, and Jones' quirky charm, but the first half would be much better if it wasn't weighed down by lackeys, who're are, presumably new Dipset recruits. It would've been much more effective had Jim used established DipSet acts such as the aforementioned Cam and Juelz, or even Hell Rell and J.R. Writer, but Jones chose no-names like Stack Bundles and Mel Matrix for whatever reason.
The second half of the album contains songs that have absolutely nothing to do with Christmas; the first of these five, We Get Money, is actually quite decent; it'd have been a standout on Hustler's P.O.M.E., but on this concept album, it just doesn't fit. Track seven finally does recruit a Dipset emcee with a fanbase, 40 Cal, but he doesn't do anything to help out the lackluster Too High; it isn't bad, again, at least not for a Capo song, but it isn't exceptional by any means. City Boys has a hot beat, but the return of unknown guests brings the track down even further; plus, Jimmy's adlib game is just ****ing grating on this track. Even Jeezy doesn't get this excessive with his adlibs. The We Fly High remix is probably the only reason anyone picked up this album to begin with; and it's the only track that will warrant multiple listens once the other tracks grow tiring(which, unfortunately, will not take long). However, Jimmy's guest list for this remix is borderline attrocious; choosing T.I. was a very wise move, and his short verse is the best found on the entire album, but Diddy, Jermaine Dupri, and Baby, on one song, verses preceding one another? That's just torture. Luckilly, Young Dro brings the track back to mediocrity in the lyrical department, and the song ultimately succeeds in being catchy, and a decent successor to last year's breakthrough single. Max B's solo cut, "Letter To The Game," doesn't have much of a purpose whatsoever however, and judging by his current status with the law, this will likely be the only solo track we ever hear from Max; though this may sound harsh, I doubt anyone will miss him.
In the end, Jim Jones' DipSet Xmas isn't quite as corny as one may expect, but it also isn't nearly as charming as the premise may lead one to believe. It's alright for die-hard DipSet fans, but everyone else will want to skip this, and just download the We Fly High remix.
